Please enjoy:“Tempus Imperfectum”
Please enjoy:by Al Song, Part 2
Please enjoy:of 3 The next Saturday morning Lorenzo carried his viola with him
Please enjoy:as he walked to Volker’s house.
Please enjoy:He checked his watch.
Please enjoy:It was five minutes before nine as he reached the driveway to the house,
Please enjoy:a one story abode that was larger than most of the others on the street.
Please enjoy:He knocked on the door
Please enjoy:and Volker’s mother answered.
Please enjoy:The tall, slender badger wore a pair of sweatpants along with a worn sweater
Please enjoy:and was holding a pile of towels.
Please enjoy:She gave a surprised look and said,
Please enjoy:“Oh, Lorenzo, Volker’s still asleep.”
Please enjoy:“Yesterday he invited me over for breakfast.
Please enjoy:I hope he told you,
Please enjoy:unlike last time,”
Please enjoy:the otter said, frowning at the thought.
Please enjoy:“He informed us,” she reassured him.
Please enjoy:“He said that I should come over at nine.”
Please enjoy:“Oh, you know Volker. He loves to sleep in,” she said and shook her head.
Please enjoy:“I guess that’s true.” “Come
Please enjoy:in. I apologize for his rudeness.”
Please enjoy:She stepped aside to let Lorenzo in.
Please enjoy:“I think I’m used to his antics by now.” “Well,
Please enjoy:Herr Farber called last week and said that Volker yelled at other students when they weren’t playing correctly,
Please enjoy:is that true?” she asked,
Please enjoy:her voice filled with concern.
Please enjoy:“Has he called you about that problem before?” he asked,
Please enjoy:trying to sound playful.
Please enjoy:“Yes,” she exhaled tiredly.
Please enjoy:“I swear someone’s going to get upset about his temper and it’ll be someone bigger than him.
Please enjoy:him.” Lorenzo’s voice rose in pitch.
Please enjoy:“He’s always been passionate.”
Please enjoy:“That’s one way to describe him.”
Please enjoy:The tall badger sighed.
Please enjoy:“Lately he comes home from school and he just wants to argue.
Please enjoy:Apparently asking him to consider a stable career field warrants an endless argument.
Please enjoy:The orchestra is just an after school activity.
Please enjoy:I loved gymnastics as a cub,
Please enjoy:but I knew I’d never become a professional athlete.”
Please enjoy:“He really cares about music.
Please enjoy:Maybe one day he’ll teach classes.
Please enjoy:classes.” The otter’s voice wavered.
Please enjoy:“If only he had your ability to plan things out.
Please enjoy:You’re going to make a wonderful math teacher one day.”
Please enjoy:The badger beamed toward him.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo started fidgeting his fingers.
Please enjoy:“Yeah, thank you, uh, that’s kind of you to say.”
Please enjoy:They walked down the hallway to Volker’s bedroom.
Please enjoy:The door had a framed picture of Volker in a tuxedo
Please enjoy:holding his violin and bow.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo loved how proud Volker looked in it.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo had the same one on his bedroom nightstand.
Please enjoy:“Volker!” she yelled through the door.
Please enjoy:“What!?” he yelled back.
Please enjoy:“Lorenzo is here!” she belted.
Please enjoy:“Okay,” he replied in a softer tone with a whiny hint of drowsiness.
Please enjoy:Volker was in a faded green t-shirt and white shorts when he opened the door.
Please enjoy:His fur was bedraggled and his clothes were completely covered in wrinkles.
Please enjoy:He rubbed his eyes.
Please enjoy:“Let me get ready first, okay?”
Please enjoy:“Alright,” Lorenzo replied.
Please enjoy:The stocky badger grabbed a towel
Please enjoy:and ran towards the bathroom.
Please enjoy:“I apologize again,” Volker’s
Please enjoy:mother said with another sigh.
Please enjoy:“You can start eating before him.
Please enjoy:The rest of us had breakfast already.”
Please enjoy:“Thank you very much, Frau Fiedler,
Please enjoy:but I’ll wait for him.”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo walked into the living room where Volker’s younger brother was watching television.
Please enjoy:He looked similar to Volker but was shorter and had a lip piercing.
Please enjoy:Volker’s father sat in an arm chair
Please enjoy:reading the news on his tablet.
Please enjoy:He wore a red dress shirt,
Please enjoy:a mustard tie, and black slacks.
Please enjoy:“Morning, Lorenzo,” Volker’s father said without looking up from his device.
Please enjoy:“Good morning,” Lorenzo replied.
Please enjoy:“You’re all dressed up.”
Please enjoy:“We’re heading to Tübingen to visit my sister today.
Please enjoy:I’m still waiting for Laura to finish getting ready.”
Please enjoy:“Tübingen’s a pretty town,” Lorenzo said with a smile.
Please enjoy:“Yep.” Volker’s father nodded without looking away from the tablet.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo looked over at the younger badger.
Please enjoy:He was dressed in black jeans with frayed holes along the knees
Please enjoy:and had on a black t-shirt with a British metal band on it.
Please enjoy:“How are you doing, Fritz?”
Please enjoy:“I’m watching TV,” Fritz replied curtly.
Please enjoy:“Don’t be rude, Fritz,”
Please enjoy:his father scolded.
Please enjoy:“I’m doing fine and I’m still watching
Please enjoy:TV,” Fritz groaned the statement like a complaint.
Please enjoy:“What are you watching?”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo asked, trying to keep polite conversation between them.
Please enjoy:The young badger sighed.
Please enjoy:“Something.” “Fritz!” his dad scolded. “Teen Krimis,” he replied exasperatedly.
Please enjoy:On the wall-mounted television was some program about teenagers solving crimes
Please enjoy:and having good old fashion adolescent drama,
Please enjoy:which actually meant problems fabricated by adults
Please enjoy:who thought they knew what teens were going through in the modern day.
Please enjoy:It was a little schmaltzy for Lorenzo,
Please enjoy:but it did manage to make him laugh at times.
Please enjoy:Usually the laughs were directed at the show rather than its jokes, though.
Please enjoy:Why did the criminal have to be Turkish?
Please enjoy:Why did the comic relief sidekick, who was portrayed as someone not very bright,
Please enjoy:have to be the guy with a badly executed Italian accent?
Please enjoy:Why was there only one girl in the main cast? These problems
Please enjoy:bewildered Lorenzo since it was the twenty-first century,
Please enjoy:but then again, the battle against unfair representations was still ongoing.
Please enjoy:He remembered turning on the television set when he first got into Germany
Please enjoy:and not understanding anything,
Please enjoy:so the internet felt like a sanctuary for him.
Please enjoy:He could read comics
Please enjoy:and the watch Italian television on his laptop.
Please enjoy:As his German skills developed
Please enjoy:he was able to watch television and read German newspapers and magazines.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo realized that
Please enjoy:he was reading significantly less in Italian,
Please enjoy:while his father mostly read Italian novels he ordered online.
Please enjoy:Volker’s mother returned,
Please enjoy:now wearing a yellow summer dress with green leaves sprinkled on it.
Please enjoy:She quickly began packing various things in a small suitcase for their trip,
Please enjoy:transferring her belongings from one tote bag with a beach theme on it
Please enjoy:to another with a forest scene printed on it.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo smiled at the feeling of being around this badger family.
Please enjoy:They were all off doing different things but he was surrounded by sounds and life.
Please enjoy:He was around people who accepted him,
Please enjoy:and he didn’t feel awkward being in this space.
Please enjoy:After another couple of minutes,
Please enjoy:Volker walked into the living room wearing a pair of jeans and a golf shirt.
Please enjoy:He gave a yawn and said,
Please enjoy:“Alright, let’s eat.”
Please enjoy:The table was covered in bread and a couple spreads.
Please enjoy:The bread slicer was parked on the counter still covered in crumbs.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo grabbed a piece of toast
Please enjoy:and spread some yogurt cream on it.
Please enjoy:He licked his lips at the sight of it and felt relief as he took a bite.
Please enjoy:“Oh, I almost forgot,
Please enjoy:my dad said he wanted to have lunch with both of us in Stuttgart today.
Please enjoy:Do you want to come along?”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo asked after his first couple bites.
Please enjoy:“Yeah, of course. Is it the same restaurant?” Volker asked as he spread some cheese onto his toast.
Please enjoy:“Yep.” “Cool, I love that place!” Volker grinned.
Please enjoy:His mother walked into the room as she threaded earrings though her perked up ears.
Please enjoy:He turned to her and asked,
Please enjoy:“Mom, can I go to Stuttgart today with Lorenzo?
Please enjoy:His dad wants to have lunch.”
Please enjoy:“I don’t see why not.”
Please enjoy:She shuffled through her purse and took out two twenty euro bills.
Please enjoy:“Here, have fun.” “Thanks, Mom,”
Please enjoy:Volker said with a cheesy smile.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo just gave him a look that read,
Please enjoy:I thought I was the one with a brown muzzle.
Please enjoy:Volker shot a defensive look back.
Please enjoy:“What?” “Nothing,” the otter replied, shaking his head.
Please enjoy:When they finished eating they got their instruments out and started to practice difficult sections in the pieces again.
Please enjoy:A couple minutes into the practice session
Please enjoy:Volker’s mom told him that they were leaving and that Fritz was going over to his friend’s house.
Please enjoy:At around half past eleven,
Please enjoy:they finished practicing and walked to the train station.
Please enjoy:After buying their passes from the old, rusted ticket machines,
Please enjoy:they bought some candy from a kiosk
Please enjoy:and waited for their train,
Please enjoy:sharing some Turkish delights
Please enjoy:and Polish chocolate covered marshmallows.
Please enjoy:Once their train arrived,
Please enjoy:they sat down in a section of empty seats
Please enjoy:and looked out at the quaint scenery.
Please enjoy:All the brick buildings,
Please enjoy:lush hills, and flourishing trees rushed by them
Please enjoy:as they headed towards the city.
Please enjoy:Upon reaching their destination,
Please enjoy:they left the train and walked up an escalator.
Please enjoy:The bright sun welcomed them out of the underground station
Please enjoy:to a busy street filled with shoppers and couples.
Please enjoy:There were tourists taking pictures
Please enjoy:and people avoiding the photographers.
Please enjoy:The two ambled towards Schloss Platz
Please enjoy:and then down a pedestrian street with stores and restaurants.
Please enjoy:They entered a clothing store with an abundant amount of sales,
Please enjoy:promotions, and signage.
Please enjoy:Walking into the men’s section,
Please enjoy:Volker noticed a t-shirt with
Please enjoy:Voglio una bella ragazza on it.
Please enjoy:“Look, it’s in Italian,”
Please enjoy:he said as he plucked it off of the rack.
Please enjoy:The shirt was a garish mess of sparkles with
Please enjoy:cacographic lines and colors scrawled on it.
Please enjoy:“That says, ‘I want a pretty girlfriend’ and it’s kind of gaudy,” Lorenzo replied.
Please enjoy:“Alright, I’ll put it back,”
Please enjoy:he said with a playful tone of defeat.
Please enjoy:“Why is everything in English, Italian, and French?
Please enjoy:Shouldn’t some of these clothes be in German?”
Please enjoy:“Having things in other languages is cool,”
Please enjoy:Volker said as he picked up a t-shirt with C’est la vie
Please enjoy:in a typeface emulating graffiti on it.
Please enjoy:They looked around a little more.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo tried on some button-ups and a few scarves
Please enjoy:while Volker tried a couple hoodies on.
Please enjoy:Volker finally decided on an olive green colored jacket,
Please enjoy:a scarlet t-shirt,
Please enjoy:and some plain white socks.
Please enjoy:He went up to the counter with a buck behind it.
Please enjoy:The cashier had on all of the latest trendy clothing
Please enjoy:including ripped denim,
Please enjoy:a trucker hat with indents on the sides for his antlers
Please enjoy:and a gaudy gold chain around his neck.
Please enjoy:Volker took out the money his mom gave him
Please enjoy:and some of his own and paid for the clothes.
Please enjoy:They left the store and walked to a small gelato shop nearby that was built into the
Please enjoy:façade of a shopping center.
Please enjoy:A kangaroo received his cup of gelato
Please enjoy:and skipped away past the two as they approached the counter.
Please enjoy:A young red vixen
Please enjoy:and a large black bear stood in the small space behind the display of gelato
Please enjoy:speaking in Italian together.
Please enjoy:They wore white aprons on top of their casual clothing,
Please enjoy:and had green and red visors on.
Please enjoy:“A scoop of strawberry, pistachio, and vanilla, please,”
Please enjoy:Volker said and placed a few euros on the counter.
Please enjoy:The bear scooped the three flavors of gelato into a cup
Please enjoy:and gently placed a spoon in it for the badger.
Please enjoy:“I’d like Tiramisu, Amarena, and Zabaione please,”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo said with a smile.
Please enjoy:“Are you from Italy too?”
Please enjoy:the vixen asked the otter switching to Italian.
Please enjoy:“Yes, I’m from a town near Bari.
Please enjoy:Are you from Rome?”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo guessed from her accent.
Please enjoy:“Yep, and so is my boss,”
Please enjoy:she said as she tilted her muzzle towards the bear.
Please enjoy:“I came here to study German history
Please enjoy:and I was lucky enough to find a job here.”
Please enjoy:She handed him the cup of gelato.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo thanked her.
Please enjoy:“Grazie mille.” “Di niente,” she replied.
Please enjoy:“You ready?” Volker asked the otter.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo grabbed a napkin and replied with “Si, andiamo.
Please enjoy:Oh, I mean, yeah, let’s go.”
Please enjoy:They walked back toward Schloss Platz.
Please enjoy:They passed a couple people with “Free Hugs” signs in English
Please enjoy:and they both gave a handsome wolf a hug.
Please enjoy:They watched a ferret and fox couple playing guitars.
Please enjoy:A cardboard sign
Please enjoy:propped in front of the guitarists read,
Please enjoy:“Need money for train fare to Vienna.”
Please enjoy:Schloss Platz was the largest square in Stuttgart
Please enjoy:and was surrounded by large shopping centers,
Please enjoy:museums, and a baroque castle.
Please enjoy:The pillar in the center had a statue of a fox with feathered angel wings
Please enjoy:along with wolf figures near the bottom of spire.
Please enjoy:The two fountains flanking the pillar
Please enjoy:had sculptures of various species under the spouts of water.
Please enjoy:The statues were weathered into a jade green tone from time
Please enjoy:and the elements.
Please enjoy:“The fountain on the left or the right?” Volker asked.
Please enjoy:“The one on the right,” Lorenzo replied.
Please enjoy:They sat down on the edge of the fountain
Please enjoy:and Lorenzo took off his white sneakers. The otter pulled his khakis up a bit and put both of his feet in the water.
Please enjoy:He happily kicked and splashed the water towards the center of the fountain.
Please enjoy:Volker sat facing away from the fountain
Please enjoy:and looked at the crowds of people.
Please enjoy:A couple of foxes were flying kites
Please enjoy:and many people had towels out and were relaxing under the warm sun.
Please enjoy:Another otter watched over her three cubs,
Please enjoy:who were playing in the fountain.
Please enjoy:The two fed each other gelato and
Please enjoy:made small talk. A few clouds drifted above the pair
Please enjoy:as they felt a slight chill in the atmosphere.
Please enjoy:Spring flowers bloomed
Please enjoy:and some of the people shed their clothes and fur.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo looked at his cup of gelato.
Please enjoy:The logo had an Italian flag crossed with a German one.
Please enjoy:It read, “Gelato Freddo.”
Please enjoy:Volker turned to him and said,
Please enjoy:“There it is again.
Please enjoy:Why are you sad?
Please enjoy:Is it the gelato?
Please enjoy:Is it because I woke up late?”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo realized that he was frowning at the cup’s logo and
Please enjoy:tiredly replied, “Volker, I just don’t want to talk about it.”
Please enjoy:He finished his last bite
Please enjoy:and put the cup down behind him on the grass.
Please enjoy:“Why can’t you just tell me what’s wrong?”
Please enjoy:Volker asked in a calm tone.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo remained silent
Please enjoy:and stared at the water.
Please enjoy:“You can tell me anything.
Please enjoy:You know that,” he continued with an understanding voice.
Please enjoy:“Okay.” Lorenzo released a big sigh
Please enjoy:and kept staring at the water.
Please enjoy:“Last week, I went to a deli to buy some cheese for my dad’s new recipe.
Please enjoy:There was an Italian fox
Please enjoy:who needed help because he didn’t speak German. So I assisted him with directions and translated things for him,
Please enjoy:and then we talked about Italy.
Please enjoy:There was an old person outside who yelled, ‘Go back to your own country!
Please enjoy:Why can’t you foreigners learn to speak German?’
Please enjoy:The fox had no idea what he said,
Please enjoy:and he kept speaking to me in Italian, and the elderly guy kept yelling mean things at us.
Please enjoy:I didn’t explain what he was saying because I didn’t want him to feel bad too.
Please enjoy:So I just said that the old guy was spouting nonsense.”
Please enjoy:“I’m sorry about that,”
Please enjoy:Volker said, giving Lorenzo a hug and kiss.
Please enjoy:“You don’t have to be sorry, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
Please enjoy:A couple of teenagers around their age
Please enjoy:noticed that they had kissed and walked up to them.
Please enjoy:A stout squirrel about as tall as Volker asked in a smarmy tone,
Please enjoy:“So which one’s the girl?”
Please enjoy:The rest of the small group laughed. Volker balled his paws into fists and stood up.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo tensed up and he turned his gaze back at the water.
Please enjoy:His whiskers faltered.
Please enjoy:The mother otter turned away from her cubs playing in the fountain
Please enjoy:and yelled, “Leave them alone!
Please enjoy:They’re not bothering you!”
Please enjoy:The squirrel and his associates backed off and walked away,
Please enjoy:remaining loud and obnoxious.
Please enjoy:“Thanks for that,” Volker kindly said.
Please enjoy:He turned to Lorenzo
Please enjoy:who looked like he was going to cry.
Please enjoy:“It’s no problem,” said the mother otter.
Please enjoy:“I have to teach my children that prejudice is wrong.”
Please enjoy:Volker checked the time on his phone.
Please enjoy:“Maybe we should leave.
Please enjoy:We don’t want to be late for lunch.”
Please enjoy:He helped Lorenzo up
Please enjoy:and the two disposed of their cups.
Please enjoy:Volker picked up his shopping bag
Please enjoy:and they started to walk in the direction of the restaurant.
Please enjoy:There were smaller boutique stores in the streets
Please enjoy:with less foot traffic.
Please enjoy:They passed cute stores and
Please enjoy:people wearing black sunglasses
Please enjoy:and incredibly fashionable,
Please enjoy:yet expensive looking clothing.
Please enjoy:The sun was still happily beaming at the world but as they walked
Please enjoy:Lorenzo was frowning the entire time.
Please enjoy:“Is it about those jerks?”
Please enjoy:Volker asked. “Yeah,”
Please enjoy:the otter replied.
Please enjoy:“But that lady stood up for us,
Please enjoy:isn’t that what’s important?”
Please enjoy:“But those guys still harassed us.”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo sighed. “Doesn’t it make you feel good
Please enjoy:that other people actually defended us?”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo sighed again.
Please enjoy:“I guess a little.”
Please enjoy:Volker countered with a smile.
Please enjoy:“Let’s just have lunch and forget about it, okay?”
Please enjoy:“Alright,” the otter replied.
Please enjoy:He tried to put on a small smirk, but it quickly faded.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo’s father told him when they first moved to Baden-Württemberg that the restaurant was a cross between a traditional pizzeria
Please enjoy:and a döner shop.
Please enjoy:The owner was an Italian hyena who fell in love with a Turkish fennec fox.
Please enjoy:They opened the restaurant together and it became successful.
Please enjoy:The building itself was aged
Please enjoy:but the business was relatively new.
Please enjoy:The windows and signage were free of cracks and smudges,
Please enjoy:and the interior decor didn’t look worn and weathered
Please enjoy:like most of the other older businesses around the area.
Please enjoy:When they arrived,
Please enjoy:Lorenzo’s father, Massimo,
Please enjoy:greeted them with a big wave from a seat on the outside of the restaurant.
Please enjoy:“Lorenzo! Volker!” he shouted.
Please enjoy:“Ah, mio figlio e il suo ragazzo. Come stai, Lorenzo?” “I’m okay,” the short otter grumbled.
Please enjoy:Volker turned to his boyfriend.
Please enjoy:“Wait, what did he say?” “He just
Please enjoy:asked how I was doing,”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo explained.
Please enjoy:“E tu?” the large otter asked Volker.
Please enjoy:“That means ‘And you?’ right?” Volker inquired.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo sighed. “Yeah.”
Please enjoy:“Oh, uh, good,” the badger answered.
Please enjoy:“Dad, can we just stick to German?”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo groaned. “I mean, for Volker’s sake.”
Please enjoy:Massimo nodded.
Please enjoy:“Alright, sure thing.”
Please enjoy:The two of them sat down.
Please enjoy:The patio was crowded;
Please enjoy:all of the other seats outside were taken.
Please enjoy:There was a table with a wolf family speaking in Greek
Please enjoy:and another table with a couple of teenage goats speaking Turkish and laughing.
Please enjoy:Other people could be heard speaking
Please enjoy:in Vietnamese and French at the other tables.
Please enjoy:“Alright, in German,
Please enjoy:how’s your day been?”
Please enjoy:Massimo asked. “I’m fine,”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo wearily replied.
Please enjoy:“I thought I already said that.”
Please enjoy:“Yeah, we had a great time in the city,” Volker said, trying to liven up the mood.
Please enjoy:“We went shopping and we had gelato.”
Please enjoy:“That sounds delightful,” Massimo said.
Please enjoy:An older tiger waiter walked out with a big grin on his face.
Please enjoy:“Massimo, come stai?”
Please enjoy:He and Massimo gave each other a big hug
Please enjoy:and kissed one another on the cheeks.
Please enjoy:“What did he say?” Volker asked Lorenzo.
Please enjoy:“He just asked how my dad was,” the short otter said glumly.
Please enjoy:“Oh yeah,” Volker said with a nervous chuckle.
Please enjoy:“It’s okay,” Lorenzo replied with a frown.
Please enjoy:He stared down at the menu while the waiter and his father talked.
Please enjoy:“What’s wrong now, Lorenzo?”
Please enjoy:Volker asked. “Nothing,”
Please enjoy:the little otter said, feeling upset at everything.
Please enjoy:When Massimo and the waiter finished talking,
Please enjoy:the three of them ordered. A while later the waiter came back with their pizzas and drinks.
Please enjoy:He placed a carafe of orange juice down and set a bottle of Apfelschorle and Sprudel next to it before distributing the pizzas.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo had ordered his favorite falafel pizza with tzatziki sauce and feta. Volker got a Margherita pizza,
Please enjoy:and for Massimo, one topped with figs,
Please enjoy:cashews, and various traditional Turkish spices.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo took a bite of pizza
Please enjoy:and smiled. He noticed that Volker was looking back at him and smiling at his countenance.
Please enjoy:“Feeling any better?”
Please enjoy:Volker asked him.
Please enjoy:“I guess,” he looked up with a slight grin.
Please enjoy:“Lorenzo, was there something wrong earlier?”
Please enjoy:his father asked him.
Please enjoy:“No, everything’s fine,” Lorenzo replied meekly
Please enjoy:and his joyous grin faltered.
Please enjoy:“Lorenzo, if there’s something wrong you can tell me.”
Please enjoy:“No, really, everything’s great,” he blurted quickly and turned his gaze toward his slice of pizza,
Please enjoy:timidly taking another bite.
Please enjoy:“Alright, if you say so,”
Please enjoy:the older otter said.
Please enjoy:He then turned to Volker.
Please enjoy:“What’s new with you, Volker?”
Please enjoy:“Besides the idiots in the orchestra, I’ve been pretty good.”
Please enjoy:The badger scowled,
Please enjoy:but covered it up with another bite of the pizza.
Please enjoy:“Thanks for lunch by the way,”
Please enjoy:he said between bites.
Please enjoy:“You’re welcome. I’m sure that you will all do fine.
Please enjoy:I know you and Lorenzo have been practicing a lot and that will help the rest of the group.”
Please enjoy:“Yeah, Lorenzo’s perfect at the viola,”
Please enjoy:Volker said, smiling at his boyfriend,
Please enjoy:“and he himself is perfect.”
Please enjoy:“Aw, that’s sweet. Young love,”
Please enjoy:Massimo said as he tilted his head and grinned at the two.
Please enjoy:Lorenzo looked down at his pizza again and blushed under his whiskers.
Please enjoy:“You could have said that in Italian,
Please enjoy:Dad.” “Oh, mi dispiace, Lorenzo.”
Please enjoy:“What’s that mean?”
Please enjoy:Volker asked. “He apologized.
Please enjoy:You can go back to speaking German now,” Lorenzo ordered.
Please enjoy:Massimo rolled his eyes.
Please enjoy:“The orange juice please, my sir.”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo pushed it despondently towards his father.
Please enjoy:Massimo grabbed the carafe,
Please enjoy:knocking over Lorenzo’s glass of Sprudel.
Please enjoy:It splashed on him and soaked his white shirt and khakis.
Please enjoy:“Be careful, Dad!” he yelled.
Please enjoy:“Mi dispiace!” Massimo tried to help but his napkin was already dirty.
Please enjoy:He reached into his backpack for a rag but accidentally knocked it over on its side as well.
Please enjoy:A couple miscellaneous items spilled out.
Please enjoy:A young mink was walking by and a pen rolled against her crimson high heel.
Please enjoy:Massimo called out to her, “Signorina, aiutarmi perfavore!”
Please enjoy:Volker handed Lorenzo an unused napkin and asked,
Please enjoy:“What is he saying now?”
Please enjoy:“He asked her for help,”
Please enjoy:the smaller otter said through gritted teeth
Please enjoy:as he patted himself down.
Please enjoy:“Dad, she doesn’t speak Italian!”
Please enjoy:Lorenzo shouted at his father.
Please enjoy:“Beh, ma--” his father sputtered, defeated.
Please enjoy:“Just speak German!”
Please enjoy:“Lorenzo, come on, don’t yell at your dad like that,”
Please enjoy:Volker said putting a paw on his boyfriend’s shoulder.
Please enjoy:All of the other customers including the mink were staring at Lorenzo.
Please enjoy:“I think that I’m done here,”
Please enjoy:Massimo said calmly with a forced smile.
Please enjoy:“It’s good to see you again, Volker.”
Please enjoy:“Is there a problem?”
Please enjoy:the waiter asked as he walked back outside to see what was happening.
Please enjoy:“No, we had a spill.
Please enjoy:May we have the bill now?”
Please enjoy:Massimo answered.
Please enjoy:Massimo quickly paid for the pizzas
Please enjoy:and left with a subdued,
Please enjoy:“Goodbye.” Lorenzo and Volker finished their meals in silence before heading home,
Please enjoy:Lorenzo’s stomach left queasy from the entire ordeal.
