“Tempus Imperfectum”

Please enjoy:

by Al Song, Part 3 of 3

Please enjoy:

On the way back, Lorenzo stayed quiet as a cloud of gloom surrounded him.

Please enjoy:

During the train ride,

Please enjoy:

he stared out at the indifferent world rushing past him.

Please enjoy:

Volker tried to console him,

Please enjoy:

but the otter uttered only one word responses.

Please enjoy:

At Lorenzo’s apartment, the two teens sat on the lumpy corduroy couch

Please enjoy:

and watched television.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo stared into the colorful box,

Please enjoy:

his ears drooping, but wasn’t paying attention to anything.

Please enjoy:

He leaned against Volker,

Please enjoy:

who stared down at his boyfriend and rubbed his side. “Are you

Please enjoy:

feeling any better now?” Volker asked. Lorenzo took a second to think about the next words that would exit his mouth

Please enjoy:

and replied, “No, I’m still feeling guilty.”

Please enjoy:

He took a deep, sharp breath.

Please enjoy:

“I’m still upset at those guys that were making fun of us and that old person who was yelling at me.”

Please enjoy:

“Does it matter though?

Please enjoy:

I mean, I guess it does, but we don’t have to deal with them anymore,

Please enjoy:

and we don’t have to listen to them.”

Please enjoy:

“It’s not going to be the last time though,” Lorenzo said.

Please enjoy:

“Shouldn’t things like this make us stronger?”

Please enjoy:

“I don’t feel like it’s making me any stronger.

Please enjoy:

stronger.” The otter sighed and then let out a groan of frustration.

Please enjoy:

“I’m tired of people harassing me.”

Please enjoy:

“I know people aren’t the most open-minded here in the rural world,

Please enjoy:

but at least we’re not being killed on the streets or jailed for just being ourselves, right?”

Please enjoy:

“Even though I’m not dead or in prison,

Please enjoy:

it’s still not okay and it still hurts.”

Please enjoy:

“I know it does.” Volker held his boyfriend.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo leaned into the badger

Please enjoy:

and closed his eyes.

Please enjoy:

“Ever since I was little,

Please enjoy:

I never felt like I really fit in or like I was actually a part of a group.”

Please enjoy:

He took a breath and sat back up.

Please enjoy:

“When I moved from southern Italy to Venice

Please enjoy:

I didn’t have a lot of friends and some of the other kids would make fun of me

Please enjoy:

because of my dialect.

Please enjoy:

They made it seem as if I was a stupid or lazy person

Please enjoy:

because of how I spoke and where I came from.”

Please enjoy:

He looked at the speckled carpet.

Please enjoy:

“Back then, I wasn’t sure if I had any real friends.

Please enjoy:

When we moved here

Please enjoy:

I had to learn a whole new language.

Please enjoy:

Other people would make fun of me because I was still learning how to speak German,

Please enjoy:

and even now people still make fun of me because I have an accent.

Please enjoy:

There were also the people who harassed me because I’m a foreigner.

Please enjoy:

Today I just wanted to have my dad speak German because it would make us seem less foreign.”

Please enjoy:

Volker gently rubbed Lorenzo’s back.

Please enjoy:

“It’s not like people can look at you and be able to tell that you’re not German.”

Please enjoy:

“I know that, but when I speak I sound different.

Please enjoy:

After they hear me, people know that I’m a foreigner.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo stared at the ground again.

Please enjoy:

“You don’t sound funny.

Please enjoy:

I think your accent is molto sexy,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said, giving Lorenzo a playful look.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo gave a small chuckle but sighed again.

Please enjoy:

“But that’s the thing.

Please enjoy:

I have an accent and that makes me different.”

Please enjoy:

“We’re gay, that already makes us different.

Please enjoy:

Everyone’s different.”

Please enjoy:

“I know, but it’s not like being gay makes it any easier.

Please enjoy:

I’m glad I’m gay since you’re my boyfriend,” he said

Please enjoy:

and squeezed the badger’s bicep.

Please enjoy:

“You’re so big and strong.”

Please enjoy:

“Aw, cutie,” Volker said, giving Lorenzo a small kiss on his furred cheek.

Please enjoy:

“Does it matter what people think?”

Please enjoy:

“I care about what you think.” “Well,

Please enjoy:

I’m not just anyone.

Please enjoy:

I’m your friend and your boyfriend.

Please enjoy:

And Lorenzo, you shouldn’t yell at your dad like that,”

Please enjoy:

the badger said gently.

Please enjoy:

“I know.” “Seeing you shout at your dad was kind of surprising.

Please enjoy:

I’ve never seen you get angry at him or anyone.

Please enjoy:

I mean, my parents get on my nerves a lot but I don’t yell at them,

Please enjoy:

at least not like that,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said as he tried to make the last part sound like a joke.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo looked even more ashamed

Please enjoy:

and turned his head away.

Please enjoy:

Volker rubbed his back again.

Please enjoy:

“I’m not trying to tell you that you’re a bad person for yelling at him,

Please enjoy:

but it just didn’t seem fair or okay.”

Please enjoy:

“I guess I could have just politely told him.”

Please enjoy:

“Or you could have just told him the truth

Please enjoy:

about what was going on.”

Please enjoy:

The badger gave the otter a reassuring look and a hug.

Please enjoy:

“Yeah, I didn’t want to make a scene by worrying him,

Please enjoy:

but I ended up making one anyways.

Please enjoy:

I really wish that having an accent or being from a different country wasn’t a big deal.”

Please enjoy:

“Even people here think that if you have a thick regional accent or

Please enjoy:

if you have trouble with Hochdeutsch

Please enjoy:

then you’re uneducated,” Volker said, shaking his head.

Please enjoy:

“I guess I sometimes feel as if I’m in a country that doesn’t really want me to be here.

Please enjoy:

I know that immigration is a big deal in many countries.

Please enjoy:

It seems like even in Italy there are people who aren’t fond of immigrants.”

Please enjoy:

“Really?” Volker asked, surprised at the notion.

Please enjoy:

“I guess people who emigrate from Africa or the Middle East into Italy

Please enjoy:

also have to deal with discrimination,” Lorenzo said glumly.

Please enjoy:

“It’s terrible. I mean, I know there are still some people that dislike immigrants but not all people are xenophobic.”

Please enjoy:

“I know that, but sometimes I really wish that I weren’t so different.”

Please enjoy:

“Like I said, we’re all different,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said with reassurance.

Please enjoy:

“Yeah but I wish I didn’t have to feel this way.

Please enjoy:

It’s not enough that I’m gay, but I’m also an immigrant.”

Please enjoy:

“You don’t have to keep thinking about this all the time.

Please enjoy:

I try to just let it go and forget about it,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said. “Maybe you’re just tougher than me.”

Please enjoy:

“It doesn’t mean that it still doesn’t hurt when people say homophobic things.”

Please enjoy:

The badger frowned.

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo said quickly

Please enjoy:

and looked back at the ground.

Please enjoy:

“It’s okay. I know that people are afraid of me.

Please enjoy:

I know that they think I’m gonna beat them up.

Please enjoy:

I still remember the day I met you.

Please enjoy:

We were sitting next to each other in math class

Please enjoy:

and I knew you were a little scared of me being this big, angry guy.

Please enjoy:

But when I was having trouble with some of the math problems,

Please enjoy:

you helped me with everything, and you were so patient with me.”

Please enjoy:

Volker kissed Lorenzo on his forehead.

Please enjoy:

“I was afraid of coming out to you.

Please enjoy:

I was scared that you wouldn’t want to be my friend anymore.

Please enjoy:

Plus I had a crush on you after you saved me from those xenophobes.”

Please enjoy:

“I was afraid too.

Please enjoy:

I knew a lot of people already didn’t like me but when you came out to me

Please enjoy:

you gave me the courage to do it too.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo blushed. “Aw, Volker.”

Please enjoy:

“We’re out of the closet.

Please enjoy:

We shouldn’t care about people’s stupid opinions.

Please enjoy:

We have friends with families that moved here from other countries too,

Please enjoy:

like Turkey, Greece, and Poland.

Please enjoy:

You’re not alone, Lorenzo.

Please enjoy:

You’ve got friends

Please enjoy:

and me. You also have your dad.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo smiled at the thought

Please enjoy:

and Volker gave him a tight hug.

Please enjoy:

“I love you, Volker.”

Please enjoy:

“I love you too, Lorenzo.”

Please enjoy:

The two of them cuddled and watched television

Please enjoy:

until Lorenzo’s father returned home a few hours later.

Please enjoy:

“I see you two have been having fun,” Massimo chided with a small grin on his face.

Please enjoy:

“I was just about to leave.

Please enjoy:

Oh yeah, I still have your viola at my house,” the badger said quickly.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll bring it back to you tomorrow.”

Please enjoy:

“Okay, thanks,” Lorenzo said with his paws in his lap

Please enjoy:

and his head down.

Please enjoy:

“See you, Lorenzo,” Volker said,

Please enjoy:

blowing his boyfriend a kiss.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo caught it and gave a little wave.

Please enjoy:

“Goodbye, Herr Agresta,” Volker said to Lorenzo’s dad.

Please enjoy:

“Bye, Volker,” Massimo said kindly in his low voice.

Please enjoy:

The badger took his shopping bags and left the apartment.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo’s father put his belongings away in his room

Please enjoy:

and walked back out.

Please enjoy:

The large otter plopped beside his son on the couch

Please enjoy:

and asked, “Can we speak in Italian now?”

Please enjoy:

“Of course we can,”

Please enjoy:

the smaller otter said,

Please enjoy:

his head still bowed and the feelings of guilt resurfacing.

Please enjoy:

“What was all of that about earlier today, Lorenzo?”

Please enjoy:

Massimo said as Lorenzo felt a large paw rest gently on his shoulder.

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry, Dad. I feel really awful about that,”

Please enjoy:

he whimpered. He put his glasses on the side table,

Please enjoy:

placed his head on his father’s chest,

Please enjoy:

and hugged him. His father rubbed his back

Please enjoy:

and patted him on the head.

Please enjoy:

“I’m really sorry for yelling at you,” Lorenzo said.

Please enjoy:

He sat up and wiped the forming tears from his eyes.

Please enjoy:

“Some stuff happened today and some other stuff happened last week.”

Please enjoy:

“What happened?” Massimo asked him calmly.

Please enjoy:

He hugged the little otter tighter.

Please enjoy:

“You can tell me anything that’s been going on.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo recounted the incident with the Italian tourist at the deli.

Please enjoy:

Massimo nodded and listened quietly with understanding eyes.

Please enjoy:

“And what happened today?”

Please enjoy:

Massimo asked gently.

Please enjoy:

“Some guys were harassing Volker and me

Please enjoy:

because we were kissing.” “Did they hurt you?”

Please enjoy:

Massimo’s voice filled with concern.

Please enjoy:

“No, they didn’t hurt us and there were some adults there who told them to leave us alone.”

Please enjoy:

“So you’ve been sad because someone told you those things

Please enjoy:

and because some boys were making fun of you?”

Please enjoy:

“It hurts, dad.” Lorenzo sobbed.

Please enjoy:

His large tail slumped against the couch.

Please enjoy:

“I know it hurts. People are terrible to me too.”

Please enjoy:

“I just don’t want to tell you things because I don’t want to worry you.”

Please enjoy:

“I’d rather have you tell me what’s wrong

Please enjoy:

than you shouting at me.”

Please enjoy:

“Dad, you have enough to take care of and I don’t want to be a burden.”

Please enjoy:

“Lorenzo, if you have an issue

Please enjoy:

then I want you to come to me and tell me.

Please enjoy:

I want you to know that I’m someone you can trust.

Please enjoy:

I’m your father. I know you’re grown

Please enjoy:

up and you want to keep things to yourself, but I want to help you.” The shorter otter

Please enjoy:

took a breath. “Alright.” “I remember that you didn’t even tell me that your uncle Armando used to hit you until we moved out.

Please enjoy:

I was so angry at him.

Please enjoy:

I called him and yelled at him.

Please enjoy:

I don’t think we’ll ever be able to go back to Venice after that.

Please enjoy:

He was so rude and angry.

Please enjoy:

He tried so hard not to seem like a ‘southern Italian’ yet he was so pompous

Please enjoy:

and acted like he was so much better than me.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo looked at the ground at the mention of his uncle.

Please enjoy:

“I was afraid that he’d hurt me more if I told you.”

Please enjoy:

Massimo hugged his son tightly.

Please enjoy:

“He’s horrid. I would never hit you,

Please enjoy:

and I don’t understand why he would ever do that to you.

Please enjoy:

I don’t think any parent should hit their child.

Please enjoy:

Children don’t deserve that.”

Please enjoy:

“I hated being in Venice.

Please enjoy:

I hated how the other children would make fun of me because of our accent

Please enjoy:

and the fact that we were from the south.

Please enjoy:

I would always do better than them at tests,

Please enjoy:

and they would still always call me stupid.

Please enjoy:

When we lived near Bari,

Please enjoy:

I didn’t have to worry about other people making fun of me.”

Please enjoy:

“I knew you were angry with me for leaving

Please enjoy:

Pietre dei Marini and then again for leaving Italy,

Please enjoy:

but I knew that this would be good for us.

Please enjoy:

Things are better now,”

Please enjoy:

Massimo said with relief in his voice.

Please enjoy:

“We don’t have to live with my idiotic brother,

Please enjoy:

and I don’t have to depend on him.

Please enjoy:

I have my own money

Please enjoy:

and I’m happy. When we were in Venice

Please enjoy:

I couldn’t find a job that would pay me well enough to give us a chance to live alone.”

Please enjoy:

“I guess some things are better.

Please enjoy:

I’d rather be living here than with Uncle Armando.”

Please enjoy:

“You know, when your mother divorced me I was so afraid,

Please enjoy:

and I didn’t know what to do.

Please enjoy:

Grandpa and grandma had passed away a year before so I couldn’t turn to them.

Please enjoy:

You always made me so happy,

Please enjoy:

and I felt like I had to do everything in my power to protect you.

Please enjoy:

When I lost my job

Please enjoy:

and I couldn’t afford our home and we had to move in with that idiot,

Please enjoy:

I felt like a failure.

Please enjoy:

When I lost my job again in Venice,

Please enjoy:

it felt even worse.”

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry you had to go through that.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo knew the story already

Please enjoy:

but wanted to console his father.

Please enjoy:

“But you were there with me.

Please enjoy:

You’ve always been with me.

Please enjoy:

I know that we don’t have much

Please enjoy:

but what we do have is ours, I’m happy living in Germany with my son.

Please enjoy:

I love you so much, Lorenzo.”

Please enjoy:

“I love you too, Dad.”

Please enjoy:

The little otter looked up at his father

Please enjoy:

with so much pride

Please enjoy:

and gratitude in his heart. #

Please enjoy:

The evening of the spring festival turned the small,

Please enjoy:

quiet town of Hügeldorf into a sparkling party.

Please enjoy:

The buildings and trees were covered in lights,

Please enjoy:

and lanterns hung across lampposts.

Please enjoy:

Food vendors lined the main streets,

Please enjoy:

and people cheered and talked to one another.

Please enjoy:

Neighbors reacquainted themselves,

Please enjoy:

and children ran around with food and sweets.

Please enjoy:

There was a makeshift stage in the middle of the town square

Please enjoy:

where the Gymnasium orchestra played.

Please enjoy:

The orchestra was made of diverse students of different species and class grades

Please enjoy:

sitting in their different instrument’s sections

Please enjoy:

performing together to create beautiful music in unison.

Please enjoy:

Herr Farber pierced the air with his baton at the last note of the piece.

Please enjoy:

His face, which was starting to change to its summer coat, looked

Please enjoy:

overjoyed at the performance of the students.

Please enjoy:

There was a huge cheer from the audience,

Please enjoy:

and they all applauded with ferocious enthusiasm.

Please enjoy:

Both Lorenzo and Volker

Please enjoy:

looked across to one another in the front row

Please enjoy:

and smiled. In the crowd Lorenzo’s father and Volker’s family sat next to each other.

Please enjoy:

Volker’s mother recorded the performance with a camcorder.

Please enjoy:

Volker’s brother and father weren’t paying attention,

Please enjoy:

instead they were on their tablets, distracted by television and the news.

Please enjoy:

Herr Farber gestured for the students to stand

Please enjoy:

and they bowed to the audience.

Please enjoy:

Everyone could tell that arctic fox was proud of the young musicians.

Please enjoy:

The audience demanded an encore but the next musical act was up.

Please enjoy:

Volker and Lorenzo left the stage with their instruments in tow

Please enjoy:

as a smaller jazz band started to set up.

Please enjoy:

It looked like it consisted of older members of the community.

Please enjoy:

Herr Farber remained on the stage

Please enjoy:

as he was also their conductor.

Please enjoy:

The two gave a small wave at the arctic fox from off of the stage

Please enjoy:

and he waved back.

Please enjoy:

“Volker, do you think we can go by the fountain?”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo asked. “My feet are kind of hot.”

Please enjoy:

“Of course we can.

Please enjoy:

Let’s give our stuff to our parents first so we don’t have to carry it around,”

Please enjoy:

Volker suggested.

Please enjoy:

They received hugs from Volker’s mom

Please enjoy:

and Lorenzo’s dad

Please enjoy:

and left their belongings with them.

Please enjoy:

The two walked down a small road

Please enjoy:

illuminated by glowing streetlamps

Please enjoy:

and stringed lights.

Please enjoy:

They held each other’s paws after they scouted the area to make sure no one else was around.

Please enjoy:

A little while later

Please enjoy:

they reached a small rectangular fountain that wasn’t running.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo hurriedly took off his dress shoes and socks.

Please enjoy:

He pulled the legs of his tuxedo pants up

Please enjoy:

and dipped his feet in the cold water with a relieved sigh.

Please enjoy:

Volker just sat on the edge of the fountain facing away from the water.

Please enjoy:

“I do miss being near the sea,” Lorenzo

Please enjoy:

said as he splashed around a little bit.

Please enjoy:

The jazz band played a fast-paced swing piece in the background

Please enjoy:

and Volker swayed to the music.

Please enjoy:

“When I lived near Bari we were on the coast.

Please enjoy:

I would go swimming with my dad and my friends all the time.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo looked at the dark shops around them.

Please enjoy:

One of the stores sold art supplies

Please enjoy:

and had a painting of the Alps in the front window.

Please enjoy:

To his left was a floral shop that had a sale on small potted trees.

Please enjoy:

He sighed and said,

Please enjoy:

“The hills and the forest are beautiful here,

Please enjoy:

but I still wish it wasn’t landlocked.”

Please enjoy:

“Yeah, the ocean is beautiful,

Please enjoy:

but at least there are rivers.

Please enjoy:

I thought you liked hiking through the Black Forest with me.”

Please enjoy:

“I do, but I still like swimming a lot more.

Please enjoy:

There’s just something about being surrounded by water that puts me at ease.”

Please enjoy:

“I guess I really like beach vacations in the north

Please enjoy:

and the ones in France.

Please enjoy:

I’m not a fan of the rocky beaches in Marseilles though.

Please enjoy:

Hopefully one day I can go to Italy with you and see the beaches there,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said and smiled at the otter.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t plan on going back anytime soon though,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo said gently kicking the water with a sigh.

Please enjoy:

He thought about his time at the restaurant with Volker and his father.

Please enjoy:

The awareness of how disconnected he was with Italian culture pained him

Please enjoy:

while still feeling as if it was his own fault.

Please enjoy:

“Maybe we could travel together somewhere one day,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said. “You seem happier this week…

Please enjoy:

or at least less angry at people.”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, thanks,” the badger said sarcastically.

Please enjoy:

“I didn’t mean any offense by it,”

Please enjoy:

the otter said. “I know, I’m just joking with you.

Please enjoy:

We played well for today.”

Please enjoy:

“We played well?” Lorenzo said incredulously.

Please enjoy:

“It was amazing!” “It could have been better,”

Please enjoy:

Volker replied. Lorenzo rolled his eyes.

Please enjoy:

“Of course you’d say that.”

Please enjoy:

After a pause Volker piped up

Please enjoy:

and said, “There’s another thing.

Please enjoy:

I talked to my parents about studying music

Please enjoy:

and I took your advice.”

Please enjoy:

“What did they say?”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo tilted his head.

Please enjoy:

“They still don’t like the idea of me studying music at a university,

Please enjoy:

but they were more okay with it when I suggested I could also study business or instrument repair after I graduate

Please enjoy:

as a fallback plan,”

Please enjoy:

the badger said and looked up at the stars.

Please enjoy:

“At least now they’re okay with me going into a music performance program.”

Please enjoy:

“I know you don’t want to teach

Please enjoy:

so those sound like good ideas,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo said earnestly.

Please enjoy:

“Maybe after I get my degree

Please enjoy:

I’ll just do auditions or even go for a master’s.”

Please enjoy:

Volker smirked. “If things don’t work out

Please enjoy:

I’ll be there for you, and if things get really bad we can live with my dad,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo said and laced his fingers with Volker’s.

Please enjoy:

“That’s good to know.

Please enjoy:

We’ve got another year of Gymnasium and then the Abitur test.

Please enjoy:

After that we’ll be somewhere.”

Please enjoy:

Volker gently squeezed Lorenzo’s paw.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll go wherever you go.

Please enjoy:

A lot of universities have math programs.”

Please enjoy:

“Really? You don’t want to study in Italy?”

Please enjoy:

“Well, I’ve never written a real essay in Italian.

Please enjoy:

They’ve all been in German, besides the ones I’ve written for English and French class.

Please enjoy:

Plus, I know mathematical terms better in German too.

Please enjoy:

I’m so angry at myself for forgetting so much Italian.”

Please enjoy:

“Don’t you talk to your dad in Italian?”

Please enjoy:

“I do, but that’s not the same as academic language,

Please enjoy:

and I want to be with you.

Please enjoy:

I guess the vocabulary we use when we’re twelve isn’t the same as when we go to a university.

Please enjoy:

It’s so frustrating.

Please enjoy:

I have to go to a university in a country where people will be rude to me,

Please enjoy:

work there, and live there for the rest of my life.

Please enjoy:

I call myself Italian because I was born there, but now my world consists of German culture.

Please enjoy:

I have no idea what’s even going on in Italy these days;

Please enjoy:

I have no real connections there.

Please enjoy:

I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo said, massaging his temples.

Please enjoy:

“To me, you’re the sweetest otter in the whole world,

Please enjoy:

and I think you belong here,”

Please enjoy:

Volker said and placed their interwoven paws to his chest.

Please enjoy:

The two took a few minutes to enjoy the calm air

Please enjoy:

as one boy stargazed

Please enjoy:

and the other watched the water ripples around his feet.

Please enjoy:

A new piece started up from the town square.

Please enjoy:

The beat was slower

Please enjoy:

and the bassline was heavier.

Please enjoy:

A cry of a single trumpet soared through the air

Please enjoy:

and soon the rest of the brass instruments followed.

Please enjoy:

The warm legato notes and wavy slurs created a romantic,

Please enjoy:

cozy mood in the air.

Please enjoy:

“Would you care to dance?”

Please enjoy:

Volker asked Lorenzo as he put his black paw out.

Please enjoy:

“Just don’t step on my feet okay?” the otter smirked as their paws reunited. “I’m not that clumsy,”

Please enjoy:

the badger replied

Please enjoy:

as he helped Lorenzo up.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo sank into his boyfriend’s chest

Please enjoy:

as the two of them danced slowly rocking against one another.

Please enjoy:

The otter’s soaked feet

Please enjoy:

made wet paw prints that shone against the light of the streetlamps.

Please enjoy:

They let the warm jazz overcome their senses

Please enjoy:

and surround them.

Please enjoy:

Swaying under the glow of the moon

Please enjoy:

and the glimmer of the stars,

Please enjoy:

they felt themselves harmonize with the world around them.
