“Tempus Imperfectum”

Please enjoy:

by Al Song, Part 1

Please enjoy:

of 3 “No! Stop!”

Please enjoy:

the tall arctic fox shouted as he furiously waved his skinny arms across his chest,

Please enjoy:

signaling the young musicians to put their instruments down.

Please enjoy:

He placed his baton on the stand

Please enjoy:

and took off his bronze wire-rimmed glasses to rub his eyelids.

Please enjoy:

“I know I’m repeating myself when I say this, but you all need to practice.

Please enjoy:

It isn’t enough that only some of you actually practice.

Please enjoy:

This is a group effort.

Please enjoy:

I will schedule weekend rehearsals if I must.

Please enjoy:

must.” A chubby badger in the front row with a violin shot a dirty look to the lion next to him.

Please enjoy:

The lion turned towards the badger

Please enjoy:

and gave a nervous shrug.

Please enjoy:

“We all have to work together,

Please enjoy:

and we need to all be a little more disciplined.

Please enjoy:

It’s not fair to everyone if you don’t practice or know your part.

Please enjoy:

We’re going to be playing music for our town festival.

Please enjoy:

It’s our community, so please don’t let them down,

Please enjoy:

and especially don’t let yourselves down,

Please enjoy:

alright?” he said, raising a brow at the last word.

Please enjoy:

The students groaned an exasperated

Please enjoy:

“okay” together in unison.

Please enjoy:

The fox looked at his watch,

Please enjoy:

prompting a sigh, and said,

Please enjoy:

“I know it’s a few minutes earlier than I usually let you go, but I think we can stop for today. We’ll continue next session.”

Please enjoy:

A clamorous commotion of chatting and laughing ensued

Please enjoy:

as most of the students packed up their instruments and sheet music.

Please enjoy:

A few yelled, “See you!” or “Bye, Herr Farber!”

Please enjoy:

as they ran out of the room.

Please enjoy:

“Herr Farber?” the badger asked, looking up at the lanky fox.

Please enjoy:

“Yes, what is it, Volker?”

Please enjoy:

the conductor replied as he stashed his baton and sheet music away.

Please enjoy:

“May Lorenzo and I stay late and practice?”

Please enjoy:

Volker turned to the short otter in thick, black glasses sitting in the front row near him,

Please enjoy:

viola resting on his lap.

Please enjoy:

The fox’s short ears perked,

Please enjoy:

and he smiled at the young badger.

Please enjoy:

“Of course, but I think some people from the community center have this room booked in half an hour.”

Please enjoy:

“That’s fine. We’ll be out of here before then.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo penciled in a few notes to himself

Please enjoy:

around some dynamics and tempo markings on the score in front of him.

Please enjoy:

He sighed internally as he went back to the first page.

Please enjoy:

The piece was Waldwelt by the baroque composer Salvatore Calabrese,

Please enjoy:

and the otter’s eyes were fixated on the title,

Please enjoy:

composer, and year of 1601.

Please enjoy:

He tried doing research on Calabrese on the internet without much luck.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo knew the composer was a brown rat, born on the beautiful beaches of Bari in sunny southern Italy,

Please enjoy:

and composed many short pieces and a couple dozen orchestral works.

Please enjoy:

He was able to find a condensed timeline of the composer’s life,

Please enjoy:

but the otter wanted to know how he felt about the world around him besides his affinity for flutes and stringed instruments.

Please enjoy:

Calabrese earned enough to travel to the Holy Roman Empire

Please enjoy:

and kept writing music and performing,

Please enjoy:

but was he happy about his new life?

Please enjoy:

How did he deal with learning a new language?

Please enjoy:

Did he have very many friends and fans

Please enjoy:

when he lived near the Black Forest?

Please enjoy:

Despite how much Lorenzo enjoyed the music

Please enjoy:

it seemed like Calabrese was a d-list celebrity compared to other composers of his time

Please enjoy:

and wasn’t quite as revered, but at least his memory somewhat lived on.

Please enjoy:

Once the rest of the students and Herr Farber left the room, Volker set his violin down and walked over to Lorenzo.

Please enjoy:

The two grinned at each other in their shared sense of privacy

Please enjoy:

and they embraced

Please enjoy:

with a gentle kiss.

Please enjoy:

The badger’s white golf shirt pressed up against the otter’s red and yellow t-shirt.

Please enjoy:

Volker gently pecked him again on the cheek

Please enjoy:

and said, “Why do these people have to be so stressful?”

Please enjoy:

“Hey, we have time for the whole orchestra to improve,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo said, letting his Italian accent dictate his palate.

Please enjoy:

“We usually play well at our concerts.”

Please enjoy:

“All the good players graduated.

Please enjoy:

At least you’re here.”

Please enjoy:

“At least? I’ve been playing viola since I was eight.”

Please enjoy:

“You know I’m teasing.

Please enjoy:

Let’s get back to the music.”

Please enjoy:

The two practiced

Please enjoy:

difficult sections of the pieces to perfect them as much as possible

Please enjoy:

in the dusty music room.

Please enjoy:

Their toes tapped in unison as they ran through the phrases with the precision of a metronome.

Please enjoy:

Their ability to vibrato was unmatched by anyone else in their orchestra.

Please enjoy:

They bowed with such control

Please enjoy:

and pressed the strings of their fingerboards with expert precision,

Please enjoy:

their pitch never faltering.

Please enjoy:

Their two instruments were similar in construction

Please enjoy:

and easily mistaken for the other with untrained eyes,

Please enjoy:

yet their sizes and playable ranges differed.

Please enjoy:

The boys always stayed together and listened to one another.

Please enjoy:

They looked and acted very differently,

Please enjoy:

but their common thread was their love for music.

Please enjoy:

Later on, the afternoon light from the windows turned into a dim golden glow

Please enjoy:

and there was a knock on the door by a middle aged Siberian tigress from the community center.

Please enjoy:

Volker and Lorenzo stopped;

Please enjoy:

it was their cue to leave.

Please enjoy:

They packed up their belongings

Please enjoy:

and ambled out of the school.

Please enjoy:

The streets of their small town were drenched in a warm shade of honeyed yellow.

Please enjoy:

Trees rustled and shimmered as they reflected soft sunlight from their verdant leaves.

Please enjoy:

Many of the stores and cafes were closed as they walked past their large display windows.

Please enjoy:

A few cars passed by

Please enjoy:

but the late afternoon was fairly quiet.

Please enjoy:

A couple blocks further down the road of the charming town,

Please enjoy:

the boys passed one of the local bakeries which

Please enjoy:

always stirred up bittersweet memories for Lorenzo. #

Please enjoy:

It was a couple years ago,

Please enjoy:

and Lorenzo and his father, Massimo,

Please enjoy:

were still settling into their new apartment in Hügeldorf.

Please enjoy:

The little otter was celebrating his birthday so Lorenzo and his father had a potluck with the other tenants.

Please enjoy:

Helen Themelis was a new Grundschule teacher from Greece.

Please enjoy:

She was a kind rabbit

Please enjoy:

who always helped Lorenzo with his homework and explained to him little things like how to properly format an essay written in German

Please enjoy:

and that quotation marks were written differently.

Please enjoy:

Francisco, a lynx from Spain who studied economics and finance,

Please enjoy:

always helped Massimo with legal paperwork and filing taxes.

Please enjoy:

The Tomruks, a couple of middle-aged Turkish grey wolves who lived next door,

Please enjoy:

would always cook for Lorenzo whenever his dad had to work late.

Please enjoy:

The fellow tenants helped the otters learn German

Please enjoy:

and adjust to living in Hügeldorf.

Please enjoy:

At the time, Lorenzo had language acquisition classes after school.

Please enjoy:

His father asked him to pick up some bread and gave him a little extra money so he could buy himself a birthday treat.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo obliged, confident he knew all the terms in German when it came to buying food,

Please enjoy:

purchasing the bread

Please enjoy:

and a little doughnut for himself.

Please enjoy:

Outside the bakery,

Please enjoy:

the young otter ran into a few other students from the Gymnasium he attended.

Please enjoy:

“Hey,” a bear shouted at him, flanked by a bat and a weasel.

Please enjoy:

“You’re the new kid, right?”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo took a second to think about what he uttered and nervously replied with, “Beh,

Please enjoy:

yeah.” “What are you?”

Please enjoy:

the bear asked smugly.

Please enjoy:

“I’m an otter,” Lorenzo replied quickly.

Please enjoy:

“No, where’re you from?” he asked and crossed his arms.

Please enjoy:

“Italy,” the otter answered,

Please enjoy:

clutching the bag of bread tighter. “Why’re you

Please enjoy:

in Germany?”

Please enjoy:

“My dad needed to find work and--”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, you’re here to steal our jobs, huh?”

Please enjoy:

The bear cut him off.

Please enjoy:

“Why don’t you take a hike through the Alps and go back to where you belong?”

Please enjoy:

It took Lorenzo a moment to string the words together so that they made sense in his mind.

Please enjoy:

“I didn’t steal anything.”

Please enjoy:

“You got that bread in your paws.

Please enjoy:

You only got that because we let you live here.”

Please enjoy:

“Please, leave me alone,” Lorenzo whimpered.

Please enjoy:

It was like moving from his small town near Bari to Venice all over again.

Please enjoy:

People picked on him because of where he was from,

Please enjoy:

only now the language barrier was another obstacle.

Please enjoy:

They proceeded to yell things at him

Please enjoy:

and had no idea what the words meant,

Please enjoy:

but inferred that they probably were insults in Swabian.

Please enjoy:

“It’s not as fun when you don’t know what we’re saying.

Please enjoy:

Learn German already, you stupid foreigner!

Please enjoy:

All you’re good for is waiting tables and stealing our money.”

Please enjoy:

“Why don’t you learn some manners?”

Please enjoy:

a large badger from across the road yelled out at the bullies.

Please enjoy:

The badger stomped towards them,

Please enjoy:

cracking his knuckles and flexing his arms,

Please enjoy:

his scowl housing a fiery ire.

Please enjoy:

Shaking a fist, he shouted obscenities at the bullies until they fled in fear.

Please enjoy:

The badger turned to the otter

Please enjoy:

and softened his expression.

Please enjoy:

“Are you okay?” “Yes, I think so,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo replied, relaxing a bit at the kind face of his rescuer.

Please enjoy:

“Thank you for helping me.”

Please enjoy:

“That’s good,” the taller boy said with a smile.

Please enjoy:

“Thanks for the help in math class.”

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry.” Guilt seeped into the otter’s stomach.

Please enjoy:

This boy saved him and Lorenzo couldn’t even recall his name.

Please enjoy:

“What is your name again?”

Please enjoy:

“I’m Volker.” The badger put out a paw.

Please enjoy:

The otter shook it gratefully.

Please enjoy:

“I’m Lorenzo.” “I remember,” Volker said. Lorenzo felt another pang of guilt.

Please enjoy:

“Beh, I’m sorry.” He looked to the ground and clutched his groceries.

Please enjoy:

“It’s fine,” the badger reassured him.

Please enjoy:

“You’re still pretty new here.

Please enjoy:

Those guys are jerks. You don’t need to worry about them with me around. Ugh,

Please enjoy:

I can’t believe they said those terrible things to you.

Please enjoy:

They say some stupid stuff, but I’ve never heard them go that far.”

Please enjoy:

“I couldn’t understand some of it,”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo admitted.

Please enjoy:

“Since you helped me with math,

Please enjoy:

I think I can help you with Swabian and teach you some swear words.” #

Please enjoy:

Despite the hardship of being attacked,

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo smiled at the memory of it because it had brought him close to Volker.

Please enjoy:

It was at that point he gradually stopped spending as much time with his neighbors

Please enjoy:

and started spending more time with his German boyfriend and classmates.

Please enjoy:

Volker introduced the little otter to new friends and people around town,

Please enjoy:

along with showing him the best cafés and restaurants. Through the badger,

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo learned about the different German television shows

Please enjoy:

and how to converse with others their age without sounding like a language textbook.

Please enjoy:

His father, on the other paw,

Please enjoy:

worked with other Italians and people from around the globe,

Please enjoy:

so Massimo usually spent his free time with his coworkers and their neighbors.

Please enjoy:

It was tough for Lorenzo and his father

Please enjoy:

watching their neighbors gradually leave over the years.

Please enjoy:

After Francisco graduated he went to Frankfurt.

Please enjoy:

The Tomruks moved to Munich to be closer to their children.

Please enjoy:

Helen received a job opportunity at a publishing house in Hamburg.

Please enjoy:

Looking back Lorenzo regretted not spending more time with them before they left.

Please enjoy:

“Lorenzo?” “Yeah, Volker?”

Please enjoy:

“You’ve been looking kind of sad today and you’ve been dragging your tail.

Please enjoy:

Is something wrong?”

Please enjoy:

Volker turned to Lorenzo, who stopped in his tracks.

Please enjoy:

“Um, no,” the little otter said and rubbed his arm.

Please enjoy:

“I know I’ve been a pain today.

Please enjoy:

I’m sorry if I said something that hurt your feelings.”

Please enjoy:

“No, you didn’t say anything wrong.”

Please enjoy:

“Well, I know I’ve been kind of a jerk lately.

Please enjoy:

The orchestra is hopeless and my parents gave me that talk again about how music is a useless career path.”

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry about all that.”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo gave his boyfriend a sympathetic look.

Please enjoy:

He wished he could help with all of Volker’s problems too, since Volker was his dutiful defender.

Please enjoy:

“Why do they always have to tell me that music is pointless?” Volker asked,

Please enjoy:

putting down his violin case so he could punch a lamppost.

Please enjoy:

“Why can’t they just let me go to a music school?

Please enjoy:

They have money and they both work in finance.

Please enjoy:

Orchestra club is fun,

Please enjoy:

and getting private lessons from Herr Farber is great,

Please enjoy:

but I want to play more.

Please enjoy:

I love music and no one sees that.

Please enjoy:

You’re so lucky.” “What do you mean by that?”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo cocked his head and shrank a little.

Please enjoy:

“You want to study math and become a math teacher,

Please enjoy:

and your dad supports that.”

Please enjoy:

Volker picked up his violin case and started to walk again.

Please enjoy:

“Maybe if you said you wanted to become a music teacher or something else in the music industry

Please enjoy:

then your parents might be okay with that?”

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo suggested with a shrug.

Please enjoy:

“But I don’t want to teach.

Please enjoy:

You know I don’t have any patience for other people, especially children.”

Please enjoy:

The badger grimaced,

Please enjoy:

halting in place.

Please enjoy:

Shaking his head,

Please enjoy:

he continued, “We got off track,

Please enjoy:

so what’s wrong?” “Nothing,” Lorenzo said meekly.

Please enjoy:

“I’m fine. Really, I am.

Please enjoy:

We’re close to my place too.”

Please enjoy:

He motioned to a gray apartment complex.

Please enjoy:

There were Turkish and Greek flags taped to some of the windows.

Please enjoy:

The largest flag was an Italian one tied to a balcony

Please enjoy:

highlighted by the radiance of the afternoon.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, I wanted to say I’m sorry again.

Please enjoy:

I know I’m a jerk sometimes.” “Well,

Please enjoy:

you are sweet when you’re not angry at the rest of the world.” “I love ya,” Volker said as he stroked the whiskers on Lorenzo’s face with his thumb

Please enjoy:

and kissed him on the nose.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll see you at school tomorrow.

Please enjoy:

Bye.” He waved and hurried off.

Please enjoy:

“Ciao,” Lorenzo replied with a gentle smile.

Please enjoy:

Lorenzo drew a breath as he looked up at the Italian flag hanging off of the balcony of his apartment,

Please enjoy:

the amber sunlight slowly diminishing behind it

Please enjoy:

as the sky took on hues

Please enjoy:

of red. This was the the first of three parts of
