“Returning”

Please enjoy:

by Toledo the Horse

Please enjoy:

The city of Eldorado resembled from above the skeleton of a giant anaconda.

Please enjoy:

Seba had thought so ever since,

Please enjoy:

heady on the stories of Horacio Quiroga,

Please enjoy:

he first saw a map of the place.

Please enjoy:

The anaconda, he had explained to a friend once

Please enjoy:

while they both bent over a map,

Please enjoy:

had its head dipped in the Paraná River,

Please enjoy:

its tail vanishing 15 kilometers into the jungle,

Please enjoy:

and its narrow midsection bisected by Ruta 12.

Please enjoy:

The anaconda had been roadkill, he explained.

Please enjoy:

Development had scoured away the canopy

Please enjoy:

—its scaled skin—and revealed the brilliant,

Please enjoy:

blood-colored soil

Please enjoy:

that ran in the hilly streets during summer rains.

Please enjoy:

All cities, Seba later learned,

Please enjoy:

were built at intersections of some sort or another.

Please enjoy:

But here, in this place,

Please enjoy:

were his intersections:

Please enjoy:

Europe and the Americas,

Please enjoy:

his parents, himself

Please enjoy:

and basketball. And he was here again for the first time in eight years.

Please enjoy:

After an early bus ride from Posadas, he had stopped by the local athletic club

Please enjoy:

to meet the sprightly young athletes there.

Please enjoy:

Many of them had watched the Draft Combine Challenge the previous week

Please enjoy:

in large part because he

Please enjoy:

—probably the city’s most famous former resident

Please enjoy:

—had been on the television.

Please enjoy:

In his presence they were transfixed,

Please enjoy:

and Seba did his best to reassure them that he had no mystical powers,

Please enjoy:

that he was just like them,

Please enjoy:

that they could do what he did

Please enjoy:

if they wanted. And, he added,

Please enjoy:

that whatever they decided to do,

Please enjoy:

it was great; after all,

Please enjoy:

he himself had prepared to go to medical school had basketball not worked out.

Please enjoy:

After a couple pictures

Please enjoy:

and a Club Eldorado jersey as a gift,

Please enjoy:

he waved farewell, watching as their awestruck eyes followed him out the door.

Please enjoy:

He had one more place to go.

Please enjoy:

And were he frank with himself,

Please enjoy:

he would have realized that this was, perhaps, the primary reason to stop by Eldorado,

Please enjoy:

especially since he no longer had family there.

Please enjoy:

It was no Itatí or Luján or —God have mercy—

Please enjoy:

Mercedes, but it was a shadow of a pilgrimage.

Please enjoy:

Coincidentally, though,

Please enjoy:

Seba chuckled to himself,

Please enjoy:

it was to a church. Leaving his cousin Danny at a café downtown,

Please enjoy:

Seba boarded a bus that took him kilometers west, toward the river.

Please enjoy:

One disadvantage of being an uncommon species with an undisguisable feature

Please enjoy:

—toucan beaks were impossible to hide

Please enjoy:

—was that despite pulling his purple Alado hoodie over his head,

Please enjoy:

he could not escape the attention of the public.

Please enjoy:

Over his college career he had grown accustomed to strangers recognizing him,

Please enjoy:

but since declaring for the 2014 Furry Basketball Association Draft

Please enjoy:

the number of strangers who knew who he was had exploded.

Please enjoy:

Subconsciously he had suspected

Please enjoy:

greater anonymity in Argentina,

Please enjoy:

but the opposite turned out to be true.

Please enjoy:

Had he reflected for more than a second,

Please enjoy:

he would have recalled the general enthusiasm whenever a local son attained international attention.

Please enjoy:

The basketball now wedged under his arm only made identification inevitable.

Please enjoy:

Wanting a modicum of privacy,

Please enjoy:

he simply turned away from the prying eyes

Please enjoy:

and watched the scenery pass by.

Please enjoy:

Gradually, the buildings of centro gave way to homes,

Please enjoy:

which diminished in size and density until, Seba knew,

Please enjoy:

they were approaching Avenida Bertoni.

Please enjoy:

Rising from his seat,

Please enjoy:

Seba pressed the button to signal a stop and descended from the back of the bus.

Please enjoy:

He had been a tall child,

Please enjoy:

but even so the neighborhood looked smaller than he remembered it.

Please enjoy:

The kiosko on the corner had a new paint job and,

Please enjoy:

he remembered with some bemusement,

Please enjoy:

had provided his first nickname among the neighborhood children.

Please enjoy:

Ah, the joys of a Polish surname:

Please enjoy:

confused furs had rendered it Kiosko.

Please enjoy:

An announcer had recently rendered it as “Couscous,”

Please enjoy:

an instant hit among tongue-tied reporters.

Please enjoy:

While he purchased a chocolate

Please enjoy:

-and-dulce de leche alfajor [al-fa-HOR] from the kiosko’s attendant—a nostalgic splurge

Please enjoy:

—he decided he preferred Couscous.

Please enjoy:

In no rush, he walked down the street chewing on the thick confection.

Please enjoy:

The houses and pavement

Please enjoy:

bore the red-ochre-stained facades characteristic of anything exposed to the Misiones weather

Please enjoy:

and left unscrubbed,

Please enjoy:

the same tint that colored his feet every day of his youth.

Please enjoy:

There was his childhood home,

Please enjoy:

now obviously occupied by others

Please enjoy:

and painted a different color;

Please enjoy:

stopping in might have been welcomed,

Please enjoy:

but he wasn’t quite in the mood for company.

Please enjoy:

Besides, it was no longer a part of his world.

Please enjoy:

His family lived elsewhere,

Please enjoy:

and he cared about them more than the real estate.

Please enjoy:

No, what he came for was ahead:

Please enjoy:

behind a tall black metal fence

Please enjoy:

(gate, as always, locked)

Please enjoy:

and beside a long, low, peak-roofed rectangle of a brick building

Please enjoy:

sat an expanse of cracked,

Please enjoy:

rust-tinted concrete.

Please enjoy:

On either end of the concrete stood a black pole,

Please enjoy:

a beaten backboard,

Please enjoy:

and a netless hoop.

Please enjoy:

There had never been nets,

Please enjoy:

but there had never really been a need.

Please enjoy:

In the years before he enrolled at Club Eldorado,

Please enjoy:

Seba had only ever played with a handful of other furs here.

Please enjoy:

Most of his peers just went for fútbol in the empty lot down the street.

Please enjoy:

After peering at the small court

Please enjoy:

through the church fence’s bars,

Please enjoy:

Seba tossed his ball over the top and,

Please enjoy:

not waiting for it to bounce to a halt,

Please enjoy:

reached up and pulled himself over the fence.

Please enjoy:

Being two meters tall made that quite a bit easier.

Please enjoy:

Landing in the grass on the other side,

Please enjoy:

he was about to run over to retrieve the runaway ball when a new memory,

Please enjoy:

one in a flood, rushed back:

Please enjoy:

he had never played on this court with shoes on.

Please enjoy:

In fact, much of his young life had been spent barefoot,

Please enjoy:

his only shoes preserved clean for use at school.

Please enjoy:

Sitting down, he bent forward and unlaced his shoes,

Please enjoy:

leaving them and his socks by the wall of the church.

Please enjoy:

The grass and the soil were hardened by summer sun

Please enjoy:

and scratched against his feet, but it was deeply familiar.

Please enjoy:

The trouble with sight,

Please enjoy:

he later thought,

Please enjoy:

was that there was too much of it in one’s memory;

Please enjoy:

it was hard for a sight to stand out.

Please enjoy:

But something like touch

Please enjoy:

had the potential to recall moods and emotions.

Please enjoy:

For now Seba did not feel like the FBA draft candidate,

Please enjoy:

brain stuffed with plays and muscles tuned by years of drills,

Please enjoy:

but the ten-year-old with an oversized, overworn basketball

Please enjoy:

shooting hoops in the afternoon heat.

Please enjoy:

And that was what he did now.

Please enjoy:

At first cringing from the heat of the concrete,

Please enjoy:

he took his place in front of the hoop,

Please enjoy:

aimed, and tossed the ball upward.

Please enjoy:

His expert follow-through directed the ball into the metal ring.

Please enjoy:

A couple paces gave him the rebound.

Please enjoy:

So he continued, unaware of the world,

Please enjoy:

landing nearly every basket he attempted

Please enjoy:

—a feat that he knew

Please enjoy:

would have left little Seba jealous.

Please enjoy:

Then behind him he heard the unmistakable sound

Please enjoy:

of bouncing rubber and,

Please enjoy:

turning, saw a ball pass by and come to a halt at the edge of the court.

Please enjoy:

It had not come from the fence,

Please enjoy:

but the brick wall that ringed three-quarters of the church’s property.

Please enjoy:

Picking up his own ball and standing,

Please enjoy:

he glanced to the top of the wall.

Please enjoy:

Surely enough, as he watched he saw a little hooved hand

Please enjoy:

reach up and over

Please enjoy:

to grip the brickwork.

Please enjoy:

A second longer revealed the large-eyed face of a young deer

Please enjoy:

clambering over. Another second and those eyes widened,

Please enjoy:

having noticed Seba.

Please enjoy:

The fawn froze, obviously trying to decide whether it would be better to

Please enjoy:

abandon their ball and run

Please enjoy:

or to finish scaling the wall in full view of someone who,

Please enjoy:

for all they knew,

Please enjoy:

could get him in trouble.

Please enjoy:

Seba tried to defuse the tension with a smile and a wave,

Please enjoy:

asking, “So, that is your ball?”

Please enjoy:

The face above the wall nodded silently,

Please enjoy:

eyes still wide. “Bien,

Please enjoy:

come and get it! Maybe I could show you a few things.”

Please enjoy:

Weighing the situation a moment more,

Please enjoy:

the deer strained to lift himself over the edge but achieved it,

Please enjoy:

spinning and deftly dropping onto the lawn below.

Please enjoy:

Seba walked over to the youngster’s ball and tossed it over.

Please enjoy:

“Catch!” A brief fumble later, the fawn caught the ball.

Please enjoy:

Seba asked his name and with the reply

Please enjoy:

—Luz—found she was a little doe,

Please enjoy:

not a buck. Her family had recently moved here from San Vicente, she said,

Please enjoy:

and she found the basketball court here.

Please enjoy:

She didn’t know who owned it.

Please enjoy:

After reassuring her that he was not there to report her,

Please enjoy:

Seba began demonstrating to her the fundamentals of the game

Please enjoy:

—dribbling, shooting,

Please enjoy:

ball control—and having her practice them.

Please enjoy:

Her awkwardness reminds Seba

Please enjoy:

of those first times he had come down here with a ball he had borrowed.

Please enjoy:

He could not help but smile,

Please enjoy:

and toucan smiles are large.

Please enjoy:

But throughout the impromptu teaching session,

Please enjoy:

Luz continued to look at Seba strangely,

Please enjoy:

but only when she thought he was distracted.

Please enjoy:

It registered marginally in Seba’s mind

Please enjoy:

that she was doing this, but he attributed it to interaction between strangers

Please enjoy:

and his own proven social stiffness.

Please enjoy:

When he knelt down beside her to guide her in making a shot, however, she let it out:

Please enjoy:

“You are Couscous, no?”

Please enjoy:

The question caught Seba off-guard.

Please enjoy:

His private reverie on the court had washed away all sense of celebrity that had accumulated over the past months,

Please enjoy:

and to be reminded of his fame—especially with such a recent nickname—was jarring.

Please enjoy:

“Yes, I suppose they call me that,”

Please enjoy:

he responded. The shock was legible in her face,

Please enjoy:

but quickly turned into a smile.

Please enjoy:

“Ah! We watched you on TV last week!

Please enjoy:

What are you doing here?

Please enjoy:

Shouldn’t you be playing in the FBA now?”

Please enjoy:

Seba laughed and explained that he wasn’t in the FBA yet,

Please enjoy:

and that he was from here…

Please enjoy:

and that he had begun playing basketball on this very court.

Please enjoy:

“So, don’t underestimate yourself.

Please enjoy:

Just keep playing!”

Please enjoy:

Little Luz nodded vigorously,

Please enjoy:

hugging her ball with arms that barely reached around its circumference.

Please enjoy:

With that, Seba noticed the place of the sun in the sky and realized

Please enjoy:

he should be heading back.

Please enjoy:

He and Danny had a bus to catch that evening for Puerto Iguazú.

Please enjoy:

He bade farewell to the little fawn

Please enjoy:

but watched for half a minute

Please enjoy:

while she missed basket after basket.

Please enjoy:

Positioning herself right under the basket, she shot upward.

Please enjoy:

Seeing where it was going,

Please enjoy:

Seba leapt forward and, with one winged arm and a single flap,

Please enjoy:

grabbed the ball

Please enjoy:

and plunge it into the hoop.

Please enjoy:

“They call that an alley-oop!”

Please enjoy:

he told her with a smile,

Please enjoy:

snatching the ball before it escaped and handing it

Please enjoy:

back to her. On an impulse, he pulled out his own basketball.

Please enjoy:

“Here. Have another one.

Please enjoy:

You will wear out many in order to improve!”

Please enjoy:

Luz seemed overjoyed and immediately set to shooting baskets again,

Please enjoy:

this time with his ball.

Please enjoy:

Seba said goodbye again and lifted himself over the fence.

Please enjoy:

Halfway down the street

Please enjoy:

he could still hear the telltale sound of ball on pavement,

Please enjoy:

ball on backboard, and

Please enjoy:

—once or twice—ball through hoopless rim.

Please enjoy:

He boarded the bus

Please enjoy:

and smiled all the way back to where he’d meet up with Danny again.

Please enjoy:

There were a couple times when he heard his name spoken.

Please enjoy:

Now, he waved in acknowledgement.

Please enjoy:

When he got off the bus,

Please enjoy:

Danny examined him quizzically.

Please enjoy:

“Well, you look happy.” Seba sighed.

Please enjoy:

“It was nice to get some time to myself, that’s all.

Please enjoy:

Visit a couple places, shoot a couple hoops.”

Please enjoy:

“Looks like whatever it was, it knocked your socks off.”

Please enjoy:

Seba was confused until he followed Danny’s line of sight toward his own feet,

Please enjoy:

where he saw blue scales and black talons.

Please enjoy:

What was unusual about this struck Seba too late:

Please enjoy:

he had forgotten his shoes back at the church’s court!

Please enjoy:

He started for a moment,

Please enjoy:

recalling how much those shoes had cost,

Please enjoy:

but just as quickly realized that he and Danny had no time for him to return to Avenida Bertoni for a pair of shoes.

Please enjoy:

They were lost, and they weren’t coming back.

Please enjoy:

He sat down at the café table,

Please enjoy:

worry written, ironically,

Please enjoy:

across his rainbow-hued beak.

Please enjoy:

Feelings of guilt began to well up within him.

Please enjoy:

Replacing expensive things was always his nightmare.

Please enjoy:

When you grow up with little,

Please enjoy:

you don’t forget.

Please enjoy:

But those pangs melted away in an instant

Please enjoy:

when a thought dawned on him:

Please enjoy:

why did he need shoes to play basketball?

Please enjoy:

Plenty of fellow ballers played barefoot.

Please enjoy:

Furthermore, as a child he never had worn them.

Please enjoy:

To leave his basketball shoes on that court here in Eldorado

Please enjoy:

would be a fitting tribute to his younger self.

Please enjoy:

“Yeah,” he laughed at his cousin.

Please enjoy:

“I suppose it did knock my socks off.

Please enjoy:

For good. Now, let’s catch that bus.”
