Please enjoy:“Once We Were Meerkats”
Please enjoy:by Huskyteer The suns were at their highest point when the alarm went off.
Please enjoy:Some of us were on sentry duty,
Please enjoy:some minding the children in the nursery.
Please enjoy:The ones lucky enough to have their rest period during the hottest part of the day were sleeping or sunbathing.
Please enjoy:Most of us were digging and building.
Please enjoy:We scrambled for the shelter of the underground complex,
Please enjoy:scooping up kids and the infirm as we went,
Please enjoy:while the sirens screeched.
Please enjoy:Our leader, Mo, quietened us down.
Please enjoy:She got hold of the sentry who’d raised the alarm
Please enjoy:and took him aside so he could give her a statement.
Please enjoy:The rest of us took stock of who had tagged in.
Please enjoy:There were two missing:
Please enjoy:a surveyor, out checking the area for the best place to extend our site,
Please enjoy:and one of the engineers, who’d been working on the irrigation system
Please enjoy:out near the fences.
Please enjoy:Mo made a statement to the effect that it was probably a false alarm,
Please enjoy:and the missing just hadn’t heard the siren.
Please enjoy:We were to carry on with our work,
Please enjoy:maintaining extra high vigilance just in case.
Please enjoy:But the rumours were already flying;
Please enjoy:it’s impossible to keep a lid on anything around here.
Please enjoy:Some kind of monster
Please enjoy:—vast, stealthy, unseen
Please enjoy:—stalking around the outside of our walls and fences.
Please enjoy:Plenty of us had heard it or smelled it,
Please enjoy:now we came to think of it
Please enjoy:(it smelled of meat and ice),
Please enjoy:but none of us could say what it looked like.
Please enjoy:We already had sandbugs,
Please enjoy:pricklemouths and jumping snakes to contend with.
Please enjoy:We didn’t need invisible monsters too.
Please enjoy:We were just trying to build a city.
Please enjoy:Once we were meerkats.
Please enjoy:We’ve seen pictures in the database.
Please enjoy:They made us human-sized,
Please enjoy:so we can build human-sized homes for them,
Please enjoy:and we lost our tails.
Please enjoy:We still have the fur that keeps us warm in the cold nights
Please enjoy:and cool in the heat of the day,
Please enjoy:with a dark mask to protect our eyes from the sun.
Please enjoy:We still have strong hands and nails designed for burrowing,
Please enjoy:even though we also have tools.
Please enjoy:We’re still tough enough to deal with predators,
Please enjoy:and immune to some types of venom.
Please enjoy:We need little water,
Please enjoy:and we can eat almost anything.
Please enjoy:Most of all, we still look out for each other.
Please enjoy:That’s how we survive.
Please enjoy:We used to be cute.
Please enjoy:Our missing two didn’t come back,
Please enjoy:and search parties headed out to look for them.
Please enjoy:We returned with nothing to report:
Please enjoy:no prints, no scent,
Please enjoy:no sign of a struggle.
Please enjoy:We concluded that our surveyor and engineer had run off together;
Please enjoy:it happens sometimes that one or two of us decide to leave and start a new life according to their own rules.
Please enjoy:It’s not exactly encouraged, but there’s nothing any of us can do to prevent it,
Please enjoy:and perhaps it’s best to be rid of any dissatisfied element.
Please enjoy:We wished them well
Please enjoy:and forgot about them.
Please enjoy:We were busy. The city was behind schedule.
Please enjoy:The terrain was tricky,
Please enjoy:and we were having problems setting up the water supply.
Please enjoy:It was the diggers’ fault. No! The engineers! No, the planners who’d picked the site!
Please enjoy:The human ships had already left Earth,
Please enjoy:bound for their new colony,
Please enjoy:and even if we’d been able to get a message to them,
Please enjoy:they could not have turned back without a great deal of trouble and expense.
Please enjoy:We would have thousands of souls incoming, and not enough space and food for them. Or for us.
Please enjoy:We worked extra shifts,
Please enjoy:and those of us usually assigned to other jobs pitched in with the building work.
Please enjoy:We often found ourselves working alone to put in extra time on a project,
Please enjoy:rather than sticking in the groups that kept us safe from attack.
Please enjoy:Ears and eyelids drooped.
Please enjoy:All of us were tired
Please enjoy:and all of us were preoccupied.
Please enjoy:We were not as vigilant as we should have been.
Please enjoy:Our nights were short,
Please enjoy:but black and cold.
Please enjoy:One cold, black night a group of our teenagers chose to sneak out beyond the fences,
Please enjoy:looking for a kind of cactus that some among us were always willing to swear got you high.
Please enjoy:When they didn’t find one
Please enjoy:they teased a sandbug out of its burrow
Please enjoy:and poked at it a while,
Please enjoy:trying to flip it over with sticks while avoiding the stingers.
Please enjoy:It was while they were dancing around their prey,
Please enjoy:giggling and shrieking,
Please enjoy:that they noticed the starlight fade and the night become blacker.
Please enjoy:They fell silent
Please enjoy:and looked up to see a patch of darkness blotting out the line
Please enjoy:between sky and desert.
Please enjoy:Still shrieking and giggling at the adventure,
Please enjoy:they fled for the safety of home,
Please enjoy:where they found an unamused sentry waiting at the exit point they’d cut in the fence.
Please enjoy:We thought they were just making up a story to slide out of the trouble they were in for breaking bounds.
Please enjoy:Then we noticed another of our number was missing.
Please enjoy:We’re designed to cope with hostile environments
Please enjoy:and predatory wildlife.
Please enjoy:Our whole purpose is to turn desert planets into human homes.
Please enjoy:But this was outside our scope and way beyond our skills.
Please enjoy:The building work fell ever further behind.
Please enjoy:More of us were assigned to guard detail, but even so we worked with one eye on our current job
Please enjoy:and the other glancing over our shoulders for danger.
Please enjoy:We got jumpy, and we made mistakes that cost us precious time and materials to fix.
Please enjoy:The kids who’d run away from the desert night and left their friend behind began to drift away from the rest of us.
Please enjoy:Arguments began between those of us who wanted to get on with the job
Please enjoy:and those who wanted to arm ourselves,
Please enjoy:the whole lot of us, and sweep the desert for monsters.
Please enjoy:Some of us wanted to pull out altogether.
Please enjoy:There’s a protocol for when a planet reveals a hidden danger missed by the initial surveys.
Please enjoy:We’d never needed to activate it,
Please enjoy:nor had we heard of any crew who had.
Please enjoy:It’s a serious matter.
Please enjoy:The rest of us asked,
Please enjoy:what were we so afraid of?
Please enjoy:Ghosts? Stories? Funny smells?
Please enjoy:Kid stuff. We were
Please enjoy:divided. That never happens.
Please enjoy:Unity is in our genes.
Please enjoy:Sure, we have our spats and squabbles, but they don’t last.
Please enjoy:In the worst case Mo has to knock a few heads together, or someone bops someone else on the nose, and it’s all sweet again.
Please enjoy:Because we have purpose.
Please enjoy:Together. We don’t just
Please enjoy:blindly follow instructions.
Please enjoy:We might have a vast bank of plans to work from,
Please enjoy:but every planet is different, so we often need to improvise and substitute.
Please enjoy:Each city we create is unique,
Please enjoy:built in response to the particular problems and advantages of the landscape and climate.
Please enjoy:Not all of us are solid muscle,
Please enjoy:built for labour and protection.
Please enjoy:We are architects, technicians and scientists.
Please enjoy:Some of us are record-keepers,
Please enjoy:adding to the sum of knowledge that our crew and others can draw from.
Please enjoy:Some of us describe ourselves as artists,
Please enjoy:or even visionaries.
Please enjoy:We scientists and visionaries set to work on this new problem.
Please enjoy:Our research and discussions
Please enjoy:led us to the conclusion that there was no such thing as the invisible.
Please enjoy:Just because we, ourselves, could not see something
Please enjoy:did not mean it couldn’t be seen.
Please enjoy:So we adapted the goggles we use for night work
Please enjoy:to help us see beyond our usual range.
Please enjoy:We argued over whether the aim of our exploration should be to investigate or to kill.
Please enjoy:Either way, we concluded,
Please enjoy:we would need to defend ourselves.
Please enjoy:Our sentries already had electrical weapons as well as firearms,
Please enjoy:and to these we added a type that used sound to disable and disorientate.
Please enjoy:Some of us secretly fashioned our own armaments:
Please enjoy:knives and clubs, crude but reassuring.
Please enjoy:One of us made a helmet of wires to protect his brain from what he described as alien mind-rays, and we teased him without mercy.
Please enjoy:Then we went hunting.
Please enjoy:Split into groups,
Please enjoy:weapons on our shoulders,
Please enjoy:we divided the desert surrounding our base into squares and we patrolled.
Please enjoy:Nothing. We tried at different hours of the day and night.
Please enjoy:We looked for tracks, and for burrows where a large creature might lie low if it heard us coming.
Please enjoy:We lost one of our fighters to a jumping snake, but this, at least, was the kind of loss we could understand.
Please enjoy:One of us had an idea.
Please enjoy:We had done our patrolling in groups, of course. The ones who were taken had been isolated,
Please enjoy:working remotely or left behind.
Please enjoy:What if someone tried going into the desert alone?
Please enjoy:One of us kept their idea a secret, so as not to be prevented,
Please enjoy:and executed it privately.
Please enjoy:One of us walked out into the night
Please enjoy:weaponless, without a word of goodbye to friends or family,
Please enjoy:and sat atop a dune
Please enjoy:with the cold wind ruffling their fur,
Please enjoy:and waited for the unknown. It came.
Please enjoy:It came as a rush of meat-scented air,
Please enjoy:and a distortion in the line of the horizon.
Please enjoy:The goggles showed a glowing blur,
Please enjoy:vast and wavering.
Please enjoy:A formless cloud without recognisable features like legs,
Please enjoy:eyes, or teeth. One of us spread furred hands out wide to demonstrate a lack of weapons, and looked at the monster,
Please enjoy:and did not faint or run away.
Please enjoy:The cloud moved forward
Please enjoy:and settled in the sand around the dune,
Please enjoy:filling each wind-carved hollow.
Please enjoy:One of us touched a soft nose to something less than solid,
Please enjoy:more than gas. Our little kids were first to figure out there was something going on,
Please enjoy:and cluster around the fence.
Please enjoy:Then our teenagers slunk out of the shadows, trying to look as if they were there by accident and found the whole thing boring.
Please enjoy:The rest of us came in pairs or groups,
Please enjoy:looking for our young or our friends.
Please enjoy:We huddled up to the fence and peered over each other,
Please enjoy:passing our pairs of goggles around.
Please enjoy:“I think you should come out here. All of you,”
Please enjoy:one of us called.
Please enjoy:We debated. Was it a trick?
Please enjoy:Had we lost another to a monster that was now puppeting one of us to lure the rest into its maw?
Please enjoy:We raised our voices, and some of us scuffled in the sand, pulling towards or away.
Please enjoy:Mo ended it. She stepped forward to do her leader’s duty,
Please enjoy:and we would not let her go alone.
Please enjoy:Our strongest and bravest went first,
Please enjoy:but the rest of us were not far behind.
Please enjoy:None of us intended the kids to come, of course,
Please enjoy:but they sneaked along anyway, dropping to all fours, skittering between our legs and racing through the fence before we could grab them.
Please enjoy:We would confront the unknown
Please enjoy:for ourselves, and for our lost,
Please enjoy:and for our human employers when they arrived.
Please enjoy:We swarmed the dune together
Please enjoy:and stood in a mass.
Please enjoy:Parents held children in their arms.
Please enjoy:Mo drew herself up tall, at the very front,
Please enjoy:as if she could shield us all.
Please enjoy:Nobody whispered or chattered.
Please enjoy:We were never this silent.
Please enjoy:Our silence, our stillness or our concentration allowed it in.
Please enjoy:We all took it in at once:
Please enjoy:the knowledge that the cloud creature was alone
Please enjoy:and dying on a world that no longer held life,
Please enjoy:and so could not sustain it by renewing its cells
Please enjoy:—until we came. Now we had questions, and we yelled them all at once.
Please enjoy:“One at a time,” Mo called,
Please enjoy:but we drowned her out.
Please enjoy:We became aware of shapes forming in the foggy cloud,
Please enjoy:and we craned forward.
Please enjoy:Those of us with goggles, and the youngest of us, could see most clearly.
Please enjoy:Our missing. They lay curled up,
Please enjoy:eyes closed and unresponsive,
Please enjoy:but none of them looked hurt,
Please enjoy:and they were breathing.
Please enjoy:Some of us broke away to run down and hold them.
Please enjoy:Eyes blinked open.
Please enjoy:These two are too old,
Please enjoy:and this one too young,
Please enjoy:we now knew. For what?
Please enjoy:we wondered. We’d seen movies. We’d scared each other, as kids, with stories of crews who’d ended up as
Please enjoy:exhibits in some alien zoo.
Please enjoy:The answer sent ripples through our minds,
Please enjoy:and raised the fur on our spines.
Please enjoy:We felt the strained gaps between atoms barely held together
Please enjoy:and we knew what would become of this planet when the force could no longer hold.
Please enjoy:I need one. I take one.
Please enjoy:“No deal,” Mo said. “We’re family. We stick together.”
Please enjoy:We heard her words,
Please enjoy:but we also felt them
Please enjoy:as the alien felt them,
Please enjoy:broken down into emotion and sensation.
Please enjoy:It was a new kind of togetherness.
Please enjoy:We considered the offer.
Please enjoy:We did not bicker or fight.
Please enjoy:Each of us turned the thought around silently,
Please enjoy:each in our own mind.
Please enjoy:This city we’re building with such care isn’t for us.
Please enjoy:It’s for them. Their eyes aren’t as good as ours, so there are lights all along the tunnel walls and in the subterranean spaces.
Please enjoy:Really they prefer to be above ground, in the sunshine,
Please enjoy:so as well as setting up the solar panels we have to pour a lot of time and resources into houses with air-conditioning for their elite,
Please enjoy:and into safely fenced parks and sports arenas.
Please enjoy:When it’s done at last, they arrive in ships
Please enjoy:and move in to their new world.
Please enjoy:Those ships then carry us to the next unclaimed planet, to start all over again.
Please enjoy:There’s no place that we can call home.
Please enjoy:It’s a life that most of us like,
Please enjoy:but it isn’t for everyone.
Please enjoy:One of us said: “I’ll do it.”
Please enjoy:One of us was scooped up into that cloud,
Please enjoy:and felt the planet fade away.
Please enjoy:One of us had our mind enveloped by another.
Please enjoy:Tell me, it said. So I began my story.
