Please enjoy:“Counter-Curlture”
Please enjoy:by Televassi Den-mother was a moon-fearing wolf.
Please enjoy:She was always bristling her tail about her litter’s future;
Please enjoy:paws perpetually stained with ink from the latest newspaper articles on the troublesome youth.
Please enjoy:She lifted her ears whenever the balding elders spoke,
Please enjoy:drinking in their words,
Please enjoy:tongue twisted against her teeth as they slavered endlessly about their issues. ‘They
Please enjoy:spend their money on avocado on toast,
Please enjoy:and wear their jeans two inches lower than their parents -
Please enjoy:rapping rather than howling at the moon!
Please enjoy:They even have no interest in building dens together!”
Please enjoy:And Den-mother would nod along with those wolves and mutter to herself,
Please enjoy:“If their pack mentality isn’t curtailed,
Please enjoy:I dread to think about the future!”
Please enjoy:Because the first thing you should know about wolves,
Please enjoy:is that pack mentality determines
Please enjoy:everything. If enough of the pack does it,
Please enjoy:everyone else follows suit.
Please enjoy:They say. So, instead of spending my Sundays eating sweets and sneaking up on horses with my friends, I was dragged indoors by the scruff of my neck to be told
Please enjoy:how to be a ‘proper’ wolf.
Please enjoy:The lessons were on everything a 21st century wolf like me
Please enjoy:didn’t need to know;
Please enjoy:like the how’s, when’s, where’s, and who’s for holding your tail.
Please enjoy:Or ‘traditional language’ -
Please enjoy:that’s biting, howling, barking, sniffing.
Please enjoy:Apparently it’s a dying art because too many of us speak only English these days.
Please enjoy:I never experienced a free Sunday as a result;
Please enjoy:I only knew about them by staring out the window listening to the laughter as the rest of the world skipped on by,
Please enjoy:unfettered by their heritage.
Please enjoy:Today was no different.
Please enjoy:The old one eye stood at the front of the room,
Please enjoy:tapping his chipped claws against the desk,
Please enjoy:lecturing a young wolf with faded purple streaks in her otherwise brown mane
Please enjoy:about how she ought to have memorized the phases of the moon.
Please enjoy:It’s obvious Evie’s not listening;
Please enjoy:it’s easy to follow her green eyes as they darted around, counting how many patches of wrinkled skin she can spot
Please enjoy:as they peered out from underneath that old fool’s thinning fur.
Please enjoy:Satisfied, the elder snapped his jaws and strode back to the whiteboard,
Please enjoy:arching his neck as if about to howl.
Please enjoy:“Can’t you feel it flowing through your veins -
Please enjoy:don’t you feel wild,
Please enjoy:powerful?” He growled,
Please enjoy:clawing his fur as he strutted to the back of the classroom.
Please enjoy:“As beasts we were feared and admired!
Please enjoy:We were the first to be uplifted because we were those things to humans,
Please enjoy:and even later to the rest of modified kind!
Please enjoy:Yet you pups would rather live without it,
Please enjoy:abandoning your proud traditions,
Please enjoy:copying everyone else like an uncultured mongrel!”
Please enjoy:I rolled my eyes.
Please enjoy:Not this again; not the
Please enjoy:‘how can you be a wolf if you’ve got dyed fur’ thing.
Please enjoy:I cast my eye back out the window,
Please enjoy:watching my friends - Blue and Shadow -
Please enjoy:make faces at the windows as they cycled by.
Please enjoy:They laughed and shouted,
Please enjoy:tongues waving in the air like pink ribbons as they sped past.
Please enjoy:They had it so easy, being dogs.
Please enjoy:The old one leapt forward, slapping his paw on my desk -
Please enjoy:pressing a single, yellowed fang against my neck.
Please enjoy:I wrinkled my muzzle;
Please enjoy:his breath stank of rotten meat as he tried that primal method of discipline.
Please enjoy:If it hadn’t fizzled out from our genes generations ago,
Please enjoy:he might have been able to make me take heed.
Please enjoy:“You should remember,
Please enjoy:you are no dog. A dog obeys.
Please enjoy:A dog follows. They are the ones who slunk towards the human’s campfires because their pelts were thin.
Please enjoy:They are the ones who raided prehistoric man’s rubbish
Please enjoy:because they couldn’t take down prey themselves.”
Please enjoy:He leaned closer,
Please enjoy:pressing his withered muzzle against my neck.
Please enjoy:“If you ever want to be someone,
Please enjoy:you should never fraternize with dogs,” he whispered.
Please enjoy:In truth, it was my friends that formed the main reason why den-mother sent me here.
Please enjoy:She clawed her fur incessantly about it -
Please enjoy:those loud, noisy huskies.
Please enjoy:Always barking away - Bark! Bark! Bark! -
Please enjoy:“You do it all the time at home, you don’t even notice it, you can’t control it!” She cried.
Please enjoy:“And stop curling your tail!”
Please enjoy:It never mattered what I argued,
Please enjoy:to her I clearly didn’t know how to behave myself when out with other dens,
Please enjoy:hide my disinterest in hunting, or my desire to give up meat.
Please enjoy:They were things that, she believed,
Please enjoy:came from some immature desire to copy what non-wolves did,
Please enjoy:because it was ‘edgy’ and ‘cool’.
Please enjoy:“You’re doing these classes for your own good!” Den-mother snapped. “You’ll thank me when you’re older!”
Please enjoy:And Den-father, who at least was still around then,
Please enjoy:nodded silently at that,
Please enjoy:his muzzle peering up from the newspaper,
Please enjoy:wolfish features so stock and same that if I didn’t remember his scent, he could have been anyone.
Please enjoy:They missed the point.
Please enjoy:It was about being different.
Please enjoy:Why be like everyone else, when you can be yourself?
Please enjoy:I ground my teeth,
Please enjoy:waiting for the smelly old wolf to finish rambling on,
Please enjoy:picking at my fur in anger and resentment.
Please enjoy:He pulled away, going back to strutting down the aisles, holding his thinning tail high like a leafless branch in autumn while I brushed his slobber from my fur with a lavender-scented tissue.
Please enjoy:“We wolves are the leaders of the uplifted community.
Please enjoy:Be true to the pack,
Please enjoy:and you will do your heritage proud,” he continued,
Please enjoy:glaring at me. I made sure our exchange was mutual. I wouldn’t let him believe I’d submitted.
Please enjoy:I took it as salvation that the bell finally rang.
Please enjoy:“Remember, next Sunday I want a five page report on the importance and applications of scent-marking!” he howled,
Please enjoy:swept aside by the tide of fur rushing through the door with clacking claws.
Please enjoy:Skidding down the corridors on all fours, I leapt out the door and stood tall,
Please enjoy:stretching out my arms as I held my paws up to the sun.
Please enjoy:Sweet freedom, at last.
Please enjoy:Ignoring the rest of the pack as they filtered back to their parent’s cars,
Please enjoy:I raced on ahead,
Please enjoy:losing sight of them as I weaved past a herd of horses
Please enjoy:kicking a ball against the red-brick walls,
Please enjoy:wrinkling my nose at their strong, musty sweat dripping from their manes.
Please enjoy:Den-mother hadn’t arrived yet;
Please enjoy:she’d texted that she was still stuck in traffic on the freeway,
Please enjoy:so that gave me precious time to meet my friends.
Please enjoy:Despite what the old wolf said,
Please enjoy:I envied them. Dogs had life easy.
Please enjoy:They didn’t have a
Please enjoy:mythical legacy to uphold, or anxious parents that forced them to attend stupid classes.
Please enjoy:I slunk into the bushes,
Please enjoy:creeping round the brittle branches,
Please enjoy:earthy pelt blending in despite the blond highlights Blue had added last time we hung out.
Please enjoy:Den-Mother flipped when she saw them,
Please enjoy:but there wasn’t much she could do but wait for them to fade.
Please enjoy:I could hear them laughing and joking quietly ahead,
Please enjoy:my ears twitching as excitement built.
Please enjoy:I caught the sweet scent of their deodorant
Please enjoy:and the smell of cigarettes.
Please enjoy:Smoking behind the bike sheds - how predictable.
Please enjoy:Imitating Mr. Johnson’s plodding hooves,
Please enjoy:I burst out of the bushes, holding my arms above my head,
Please enjoy:thrashing them about as my ‘antlers’ caught in the branches.
Please enjoy:His genetics meant he never shed them though -
Please enjoy:making them horns.
Please enjoy:It always was a great game to see how loudly you can say that without landing yourself straight into detention.
Please enjoy:“Fuck, it’s only Straight-Tail!” Blue swore,
Please enjoy:tongue lolling out of her mouth as she tried to revive his discarded cigarette.
Please enjoy:“You owe me a new one,”
Please enjoy:she growled, doing his best to hold back the grin twitching at her lips.
Please enjoy:“Don’t they ever smell the smoke on you?”
Please enjoy:I asked, wrinkling my nose.
Please enjoy:I could smell the acrid tang clinging to their fluffy coats,
Please enjoy:the evidence was obvious enough.
Please enjoy:“At least I’m careful to roll the scent away before I go,”
Please enjoy:I shrugged, grabbing one from her and lighting up. “Pff,
Please enjoy:they teach you that in those stupid wolf-classes?” She huffed,
Please enjoy:blowing a ring towards me.
Please enjoy:I poked my muzzle through it like a dog catching a loop,
Please enjoy:before champing down on it with a flash of my teeth.
Please enjoy:“It don’t matter,” Blue continued.
Please enjoy:“Not even a wolf has their sense of smell half as strong as a feral -
Please enjoy:and even if they smell something - teacher’s got to prove it,” she barked,
Please enjoy:laughing. “If they don’t catch it lit in your hand,
Please enjoy:they can’t do nothing,” she grinned,
Please enjoy:wagging her curly tail.
Please enjoy:“See Straight-Tail, despite what your parents say it’s great to have human rules.
Please enjoy:They might not run on fours or smell a thing, but they’ve got fair minds.”
Please enjoy:Blue puffed, watching the smoke trail of into the air.
Please enjoy:“That scent could’ve gotten from anywhere,” she continued,
Please enjoy:shaking her thick mane in the sun.
Please enjoy:“Could’ve just been near someone on the bus,
Please enjoy:on the train-” “You’re yappering now Blue,
Please enjoy:Straight-Tail’s a sharp one,” Shadow sighed,
Please enjoy:punching the husky on the arm.
Please enjoy:“He’s not dumb enough to be hoodwinked back to the straight and narrow by some fossil trying to reverse your wayward pack mentality.”
Please enjoy:Blue grinned, fiddling with her blue highlights and lip piercing,
Please enjoy:pulling them in mock horror.
Please enjoy:I absolutely loved how she looked, and I couldn’t wait to turn sixteen so I could get a piercing of my own.
Please enjoy:“-Best point humans ever thought up though,
Please enjoy:they’ve got this big thing about individualtism.”
Please enjoy:“In-di-vid-ual-ism, Blue,”
Please enjoy:Shadow corrected.
Please enjoy:“You’ve gotta spend more time practicing your English if you want end up living with them.”
Please enjoy:“Then don’t try an’ shut me up when I talk!”
Please enjoy:Blue snapped, the icy highlights on her hackles standing up as if electrified.
Please enjoy:“It’s easy for you, you already live with ‘em.”
Please enjoy:“Fair point,” Shadow sat back,
Please enjoy:exposing his neck to Blue’s teeth.
Please enjoy:“Humans have got their flaws, don’t get me wrong,”
Please enjoy:he continued, turning back to me.
Please enjoy:“But you know, you shouldn’t ignore them because they’ve got no fur.
Please enjoy:There’s no pack mentality with ‘em,
Please enjoy:it’s just about being yourself,” Shadow finished,
Please enjoy:tapping my snout gently. “-
Please enjoy:you mean them!” Blue barked excitedly,
Please enjoy:correcting Shadow’s mistake.
Please enjoy:The black husky frowned, sighing into his paws.
Please enjoy:“Just one mistake and-”
Please enjoy:he muttered. “Aw come on, don’t strop!
Please enjoy:Straight-tail’s not got the time for us to be fighting,” Blue replied, smacking Shadow on the thigh.
Please enjoy:“You do have a point,” he relented,
Please enjoy:fiddling with the blonde and green highlights in his mane so they trailed down across his shoulder and muzzle like a human’s hair. “We’ve been thinking about
Please enjoy:you and us kid,
Please enjoy:and we think we’ve come up with something to show you’re one of us -
Please enjoy:a real 21st century dog.”
Please enjoy:“Yeah,” Blue giggled, squeezing my arm.
Please enjoy:“We think it’s pretty great that you hang out with us -
Please enjoy:too many wolves get all pointy-nosed about us.”
Please enjoy:“Ugh, don’t get me started on our outdated obsession with being ‘wild, noble, and majestic’ beasts,”
Please enjoy:I replied, rolling my eyes.
Please enjoy:They joined in with me.
Please enjoy:“Yeah, it’s awful they coop you up like a game hen in there all the time - so we’ve got the perfect prank
Please enjoy:to get revenge on your teacher.”
Please enjoy:“After today, I’m more than eager,”
Please enjoy:I muttered, refusing to elaborate despite their looks.
Please enjoy:“Oh yeah? Anyway, you’ll like this,”
Please enjoy:Shadow laughed, rummaging around in his satchel.
Please enjoy:“It’ll serve him right,
Please enjoy:spewing all that crap about dogs.
Please enjoy:Don’t sweat it if you need more,” he said,
Please enjoy:throwing me a silver jar covered in a couple of scratch-marks
Please enjoy:and half-peeled stickers.
Please enjoy:“Well, we had to take the branding off otherwise it’d probably get confiscated if they caught you with it,”
Please enjoy:Shadow shrugged, preening his chest fur.
Please enjoy:“I didn’t realize hair gel was so dangerous,” I moaned,
Please enjoy:rolling my eyes. This was stupid, and wouldn’t do anything.
Please enjoy:“Not that excited huh Straight-Tail?”
Please enjoy:Blue teased me, catching the unimpressed look on my muzzle as she bit her lip piercing between her teeth.
Please enjoy:Shadow shot her mate a scolding look.
Please enjoy:“It’s about what you can do with it,”
Please enjoy:the husky grinned.
Please enjoy:“Extra strength, specially formulated for fur.
Please enjoy:It’ll keep the shine in your pelt, it won’t glue your fur together and best yet, it’s got no smell,
Please enjoy:so they won’t know you’re even wearing it.
Please enjoy:But here’s the thing,
Please enjoy:if you want rid of it,
Please enjoy:you’ve got to wash it off with special formula -
Please enjoy:otherwise it’ll last for weeks!”
Please enjoy:“What are you thinking?”
Please enjoy:I asked them, watching as they curled their tails up tightly behind them,
Please enjoy:bristling in excitement.
Please enjoy:“Well, for one, you’re one of us kid.
Please enjoy:You don’t give in to their pack mentality crap,
Please enjoy:so, we thought it’d be pretty cool to gel you up with a curl too,”
Please enjoy:Blue smiled, tongue lolling out of her mouth as she leapt over to hug me,
Please enjoy:working the cigarette smoke and husky scent into my fur.
Please enjoy:“But Shadow’s got a great idea,” she continued,
Please enjoy:tossing me the small blue tub containing the remedy.
Please enjoy:“But better yet,” Shadow sighed, pulling her off me,
Please enjoy:“if you use those wolf skills of yours to sneak into your teacher's house-”
Please enjoy:“And work this into his tail...” Blue whispered.
Please enjoy:Both the huskies nodded, sharing my smirk.
Please enjoy:“Oh Straight-Tail, this is gonna be more fun than a house on fire.” ***
Please enjoy:Den-mother was full of questions as she flipped the indicators on and swerved onto the freeway.
Please enjoy:“How was your day?
Please enjoy:Did you eat a big lunch? What did you learn?”
Please enjoy:I had few answers,
Please enjoy:trying instead to concentrate on stopping my ears
Please enjoy:from twitching every time we drove over the gaps between the road’s concrete slabs. Thunk thunk, thunk thunk, thunk thunk.
Please enjoy:Even with the radio on, it was loud and irritating.
Please enjoy:“How come we’re not running home by the river?”
Please enjoy:That was the quieter alternative after all,
Please enjoy:and Den-Father always went that way when he came to pick me up.
Please enjoy:Cars were loud,
Please enjoy:noisy, and left the stink of asphalt in your fur that took days to get rid
Please enjoy:of. “I’ve got to pick up your younger litter-mates from nursery and then get dinner ready,” she sighed,
Please enjoy:combing her claws through her tangled mane.
Please enjoy:After Den-father had just become father,
Please enjoy:she’d put less and less effort into keeping up her appearance.
Please enjoy:I’d overheard their
Please enjoy:‘conversations’ the night she came out from hospital
Please enjoy:after their small litter,
Please enjoy:and despite everything, he became a voice at the end of the telephone
Please enjoy:and a scent I knew once a month.
Please enjoy:“It would be nice to hear you answer me about your day,” she snapped.
Please enjoy:She cursed abruptly,
Please enjoy:sounding her horn at a deer who swerved into the middle lane without indicating.
Please enjoy:“Too many idiots let loose on the road these days.”
Please enjoy:Should have taken the river run.
Please enjoy:“My day was long.
Please enjoy:Just more stuff about how to hold your tail, and why you should categorize by scent rather than name.
Please enjoy:name.” “Geez, I swear the old coot says one thing useful
Please enjoy:and then immediately comes back with some rubbish.”
Please enjoy:My tail twitched.
Please enjoy:“Mom, it’s all rubbish.
Please enjoy:Shadow says that-”
Please enjoy:“For the last time, it’s not about them,
Please enjoy:it’s about you,” she growled -
Please enjoy:but not unkindly.
Please enjoy:“You’ve got to know how to behave if you want to have any chance of getting on in life.”
Please enjoy:Den-mother clicked the indicators on against
Please enjoy:as she turned off under the sign for Stargazer Avenue.
Please enjoy:The white picket fences didn’t divide much here,
Please enjoy:everything was the same on either side.
Please enjoy:“You’ve got to learn how to make your way among wolf society if you want a bright future.
Please enjoy:If you turn up to an interview without holding your tail correctly, no one will take you seriously.”
Please enjoy:“But-” “I don’t expect you to understand now,” she said,
Please enjoy:turning up into the driveway and stopping the engine.
Please enjoy:I knew it was futile to attempt to argue further.
Please enjoy:I spent that evening picking at my chickpeas and lentils while the rest of the pack tucked into rare slabs of meat
Please enjoy:with abandon - a diet only tolerated because I still kept that oily luster to my fur
Please enjoy:thanks to grooming supplies Shadow smuggled to me.
Please enjoy:I kept thinking about the pot of hair gel in my backpack.
Please enjoy:When I finally got dismissed I rushed up to the shower, unable to keep a firm hold of my tail
Please enjoy:as it flicked about with delight.
Please enjoy:I popped the cap open with my claw and reached behind me,
Please enjoy:rubbing it into my fur,
Please enjoy:pulling it upwards.
Please enjoy:I waited ten minutes,
Please enjoy:then let go. In the mirror I watched a grin stretch across my face,
Please enjoy:wider than any before.
Please enjoy:It didn’t just smile for joy,
Please enjoy:but also for revenge. ***
Please enjoy:Blue snickered like a hyena.
Please enjoy:Shadow tried in vain to hide his smirk.
Please enjoy:“This is gonna be so funny,”
Please enjoy:they both whispered,
Please enjoy:digging their paws into their sides as they tried to contain themselves.
Please enjoy:“I can’t wait to see the look on his face when he wakes up.”
Please enjoy:Wolford, for all his talk about being so much like a wolf,
Please enjoy:slept like a rock.
Please enjoy:You could hear his snoring from outside his house, night and day, and he woke for little.
Please enjoy:I remembered this from his very first lesson;
Please enjoy:a true wolf sleeps lightly and often.
Please enjoy:That slip was the thing that I seized upon,
Please enjoy:and I held to that flaw like a torch.
Please enjoy:“Serves him right for all this ‘true wolf’ crap I’ve had to put up with,”
Please enjoy:I muttered, sneaking closer.
Please enjoy:“Yeah, this’ll teach that stuffy old fart for forcing you to spend your Sunday’s cooped up in a classroom
Please enjoy:rather than hanging out with us,”
Please enjoy:Shadow replied. “Geez!”
Please enjoy:Blue gagged. “I can smell him out from here already,”
Please enjoy:she wrinkled her muzzle,
Please enjoy:pawing at her snout as she rolled her tongue across her nose,
Please enjoy:trying to wipe away the smell. “Does he ever wash?”
Please enjoy:“Not a chance -
Please enjoy:a true wolf doesn’t demean his nature with perfumes,”
Please enjoy:I groaned. “Is that the crap they have you chant out?”
Please enjoy:Shadow swore. “You think that’s bad, try reciting the list of foods that a wolf shouldn’t eat.”
Please enjoy:I paused. “Chocolate’s one of them.”
Please enjoy:“What? When they made our species they took out that gene-flaw - and even then,
Please enjoy:they make all chocolate without it anyway!”
Please enjoy:“Yeah, what gives?” Blue added,
Please enjoy:“If it wasn’t the case, then I’d have conked it long ago!”
Please enjoy:The husky fidgeted,
Please enjoy:paws rummaging around in her wrapper filled pockets as if to prove a point.
Please enjoy:“Yeah, but you can still die from it if you keep eating so much,” Shadow teased,
Please enjoy:even though Blue was as skinny as they come.
Please enjoy:“Hey, my parents give it to me because they love me!”
Please enjoy:“And keeping up that puppy fat just makes you look so adorable!” Shadow retorted,
Please enjoy:grabbing the husky’s cheeks and making a mock cooing noise.
Please enjoy:Blue growled and snapped back at him, cursing as she swiped at Shadow’s face -
Please enjoy:but he jumped away, snickering and laughing at his friend.
Please enjoy:“Shh! You’ll wake him up if you keep at it,”
Please enjoy:I snapped, losing my patience.
Please enjoy:They never seemed able to stop goofing around.
Please enjoy:“Come on,” Shadow hollered,
Please enjoy:“you said yourself he sleeps through anything!”
Please enjoy:“Shut up, Straight-Tail’s right!”
Please enjoy:Blue intervened. “If we get this done,
Please enjoy:then we can all hang out together again, like the good times.”
Please enjoy:Shadow grumbled and bit his lip,
Please enjoy:fiddling with the blonde and green highlights against the black streaks of fur on his forearms.
Please enjoy:“So how’re you going to get in there?”
Please enjoy:Blue asked, cocking her head.
Please enjoy:“Door’s locked, and he’s not one to keep a feral and have a dog-flap, is he?”
Please enjoy:“I’m surprised he even has
Please enjoy:a house, considering how much he behaves like one,” Shadow retorted, still sulking.
Please enjoy:Leaving them to bicker,
Please enjoy:I jogged around the building looking for a way in.
Please enjoy:The heat of the night was oppressive,
Please enjoy:forcing me to loll my tongue outside my muzzle and pant;
Please enjoy:something ill becoming of a wolf.
Please enjoy:It kept me cool though.
Please enjoy:The temperature had gotten to the old wolf too though.
Please enjoy:Off to the side of the white-picket porch he’d left a window open;
Please enjoy:curtains curling outwards as they caught the slight breeze.
Please enjoy:Just to the side of the porch, a rusty, antique drainpipe led upwards,
Please enjoy:close enough that if I climbed up it,
Please enjoy:I could get on top of the porch
Please enjoy:and then I’d just have to reach up and pull myself in through the window.
Please enjoy:“No way you can get up that way,”
Please enjoy:Blue shrugged. “You’ve got paws kiddo,
Please enjoy:no way you can grab and haul yourself up that thing.”
Please enjoy:The husky dug into her pockets,
Please enjoy:whipping out a screwdriver and a set of pliers, snapping them together.
Please enjoy:“We’re not breaking in!” I snapped.
Please enjoy:“But that’s exactly what we’re doing?”
Please enjoy:Blue sighed and scratched her head,
Please enjoy:kicking the grass with her paw as I took hold of the drainpipe.
Please enjoy:The screws wobbled, but it held firm;
Please enjoy:the rust crunching underneath my paws.
Please enjoy:I smirked at Blue as I pulled my way up.
Please enjoy:I tried to hide the tremor in my legs as I stepped out onto the porch,
Please enjoy:looking down at the two huskies who stood together,
Please enjoy:clutching each other’s arms,
Please enjoy:tails curled up behind them.
Please enjoy:As soon as they caught me looking,
Please enjoy:they pushed each other back,
Please enjoy:snapping half-heartedly at each other like it was some sort of mistake.
Please enjoy:Taking a deep breath,
Please enjoy:I pushed the window up
Please enjoy:and slipped inside.
Please enjoy:It was dark inside.
Please enjoy:It stank; the air inside layered like heavy dust,
Please enjoy:none of the scents flushed out from here in weeks.
Please enjoy:I took a moment for my eyes to adjust from the moonlight,
Please enjoy:hoping that the old wolf wouldn’t wake upon smelling my scent.
Please enjoy:He kept on snoring like some old human,
Please enjoy:tongue caught outside his jaws,
Please enjoy:sticking out all puffy and dry.
Please enjoy:He lay on his side,
Please enjoy:the bed sheets kicked off and rolled up over his ankles;
Please enjoy:sleeping pills scattered like grains of sand across his bedside table.
Please enjoy:Creeping forward,
Please enjoy:I took out the gel,
Please enjoy:lathering my paws up with it,
Please enjoy:grinning, remembering the lessons where Wolford had insisted we practice moving silently; ‘like
Please enjoy:a true wolf stalks its prey’.
Please enjoy:I bit my lip, trying to keep my hands from trembling as my excitement built,
Please enjoy:working the thick gel into his ragged tail,
Please enjoy:curling it backwards.
Please enjoy:The urge to shout, to declare some victory crept up my throat,
Please enjoy:but I stayed silent,
Please enjoy:listening to the growing patter of raindrops outside.
Please enjoy:When I slid back down the drainpipe, Blue and Shadow were sprinting back and forth,
Please enjoy:trying to vent their excitement.
Please enjoy:I joined them, pumping my legs,
Please enjoy:paws clawing and taking out chunks of turf
Please enjoy:as I outstripped them,
Please enjoy:laughing as the growing rain washed away our scents -
Please enjoy:not that anyone these days had the nose to notice. ***
Please enjoy:The next day passed in agitation;
Please enjoy:seconds stubbornly bending away like the hairs of a cat on edge.
Please enjoy:We spent the day sprinting through fields and
Please enjoy:tangled undergrowth - even ducking out of my last class to spend the hour with Blue and Shadow
Please enjoy:behind the bike sheds stuffing our muzzles full of chocolate.
Please enjoy:When Den-Mother picked me up,
Please enjoy:muddy-pelted and reeking of sweat,
Please enjoy:all wildness in my eyes, she made a fervent prayer through gritted fangs that I’d learn some manners in class tomorrow,
Please enjoy:else I’d be the one scrubbing the floors clean.
Please enjoy:The look on her face was priceless when we bumped into James,
Please enjoy:a deer who lived next door to Wolford.
Please enjoy:“Gotta say, my mom’s relieved.
Please enjoy:For the first time ever he was silent last night - and the one before!
Please enjoy:About time he stopped waking everyone up with all his damn howling,
Please enjoy:even if he is that ill!”
Please enjoy:he said as he went about scraping the velveteen off his antlers.
Please enjoy:Den-Mother flinched when he said that.
Please enjoy:She didn’t ask me about the lessons that day. ***
Please enjoy:The next day all the wolves found ourselves corralled into the classroom by Emerson the head teacher;
Please enjoy:a white-pelted moose
Please enjoy:with lofty antlers.
Please enjoy:The scent of excitement lingered in the air,
Please enjoy:subtle but electric,
Please enjoy:enough to get some hackles standing on edge -
Please enjoy:the instinct to follow tingling in my tail.
Please enjoy:“You may not be aware that Mr. Wolford has been poorly for the last few days,
Please enjoy:however he has insisted on coming in today for your lesson today.
Please enjoy:I hope you’ll show him due respect for his commitment
Please enjoy:to your education,”
Please enjoy:He finished, muzzle falling back into his trademark squat,
Please enjoy:grumpy shape as he walked out the door.
Please enjoy:Wolford limped through the held door,
Please enjoy:holding himself without any of his usual demeanor.
Please enjoy:He was hunched over, sullen-eyed, defensive;
Please enjoy:keeping his back to the door at all times -
Please enjoy:crossing over to his desk by sidestepping like a crab.
Please enjoy:Instead of standing, he sat,
Please enjoy:resting his gaunt arms upon the desk,
Please enjoy:propping up his skeletal frame with his thinning paws.
Please enjoy:It was plain to see;
Please enjoy:he reeked of worry,
Please enjoy:his eyelids were haggard
Please enjoy:and seemed to scrape across his eyes whenever he blinked.
Please enjoy:Instead of launching into his usual tirade, he just sat there,
Please enjoy:staring back out at the class
Please enjoy:as the class stared back at him.
Please enjoy:“It’s hard being an old wolf,”
Please enjoy:he murmured, forcing the room’s ears to point and lean forward.
Please enjoy:“We don’t tend to age well.
Please enjoy:In the old days, I would have met my end in the hunt as soon as the cold started to creep into my bones.”
Please enjoy:He paused, running his tongue across his gums,
Please enjoy:nostrils flaring.
Please enjoy:“But it’s against our spirit to lie down and give up,”
Please enjoy:he said. “Now, please get out your essays I set you last week,”
Please enjoy:he commanded, standing up and in doing so,
Please enjoy:revealing his curled tail.
Please enjoy:In unison, the entire front row of the claw cocked their heads.
Please enjoy:“Sir, that’s not how you hold your tail!”
Please enjoy:Stevie, a young arctic wolf barked.
Please enjoy:Wolford stood still.
Please enjoy:He gritted his teeth,
Please enjoy:tendons visibly straining on his bald patches,
Please enjoy:as he tried - and failed -
Please enjoy:to straighten his tail.
Please enjoy:“No,” he growled, glaring at the pup,
Please enjoy:“but as you age your body changes-”
Please enjoy:“But that’s a dog’s tail!” The white wolf bit his tongue, confused.
Please enjoy:“Will my tail curl when I get older?”
Please enjoy:Evie, Stevie’s sister cried out, clutching her tail.
Please enjoy:“It could happen to anyone!” Fred barked,
Please enjoy:laughing as the younger wolves fretted at themselves with their paws.
Please enjoy:“Emerson said you were sick!
Please enjoy:What if I get sick?”
Please enjoy:Tom leapt back, his chair clattering on the floor - and with it,
Please enjoy:the pin dropped. A rumination of excitement rippled through the wolves.
Please enjoy:The scent of it rose throughout the room,
Please enjoy:stifling all others.
Please enjoy:I felt my heart lurch.
Please enjoy:My toes curled, claws scraping against the floor.
Please enjoy:I bit my tongue, but my muzzle twitched.
Please enjoy:Pack mentality kicked in.
Please enjoy:That old, venerable wolf who had set the standard of what made a wolf,
Please enjoy:was here with his tail bent back like a common dog.
Please enjoy:And everyone followed.
Please enjoy:All behind the desks,
Please enjoy:poking out from behind their chairs, the pack’s tails rose,
Please enjoy:bristling - pulled back, as if drawn taut by invisible strings.
Please enjoy:The class no longer looked like wolves,
Please enjoy:but an entire chaos of huskies.
Please enjoy:They laughed and cried and shouted as he tried to instill order, but they were infected now,
Please enjoy:and no matter how loudly he growled or bared his teeth,
Please enjoy:they scrapped about with each other like sled-dogs fighting to get free of the traces.
Please enjoy:Then they broke out,
Please enjoy:sprinting along the corridors with their ridiculous tails bobbing about behind them;
Please enjoy:shrieking out for their parents as they cried about the contagion.
Please enjoy:It was a beautiful ruckus.
Please enjoy:Blue and Shadow ran in to join me,
Please enjoy:howling like wolves in their laughter,
Please enjoy:holding their hands over their faces as we jumped up and down, struggling to vent the excitement that flowed through us,
Please enjoy:watching as the younger wolves rushed towards their parent’s
Please enjoy:who still hadn’t yet left the school.
Please enjoy:Den-Mother spotted me, barking loudly,
Please enjoy:ears pricked upright in alarm.
Please enjoy:“What happened?” she questioned, shaking me while the other parents bickered.
Please enjoy:“He infected our children!”
Please enjoy:“He taught them how to act like a dog!”
Please enjoy:“Absolutely despicable! I’m not letting my litter near him again!”
Please enjoy:Den-Mother sighed,
Please enjoy:biting her lip, folding her ears.
Please enjoy:She grabbed hold of me,
Please enjoy:patting me down, whispering to me.
Please enjoy:She reached back, cautiously patting my tail - which in spite of it all, remained straight.
Please enjoy:“I should have trusted you when you said you knew how to behave,” she apologized, shoulders sagging.
Please enjoy:“It’s just been hard without your father.”
Please enjoy:I said nothing, catching Shadow stamp down on Blue’s foot
Please enjoy:before she opened her mouth and ruined it.
Please enjoy:“Does this mean you won’t send me to those classes anymore?”
Please enjoy:I asked. “I know how to behave,”
Please enjoy:I replied, edging her on.
Please enjoy:She pulled back, frowning.
Please enjoy:“As long as you continue to behave,”
Please enjoy:she smiled, taking my paw.
Please enjoy:I took that moment to hold my tail high in triumph -
Please enjoy:just like a proper wolf.
Please enjoy:As we drove home, my phone buzzed as Shadow texted me. ‘When
Please enjoy:do you think you’re going to wash the gel out of your tail?’
Please enjoy:I smiled, but I didn’t reply.
