“Little Light Show”

Please enjoy:

by W.R. Frixmargen

Please enjoy:

It had rained earlier that day, but the sky had cleared up nicely and the city was well on its way to being dry once again.

Please enjoy:

That didn’t mean there weren’t puddles in the alley Taru found himself in this particular evening,

Please enjoy:

but it did mean the wall of the office building in front of him was nice and dry.

Please enjoy:

Dry enough for the contents of his can to bond properly.

Please enjoy:

The maned wolf pointed the bottle at the wall and began spraying.

Please enjoy:

To the casual observer,

Please enjoy:

the sprayed matter seemed clear.

Please enjoy:

However Taru’s glasses gave him a very different view of the situation.

Please enjoy:

The tag he was forming,

Please enjoy:

which included his personal symbol and that of his crew,

Please enjoy:

was forming up nicely.

Please enjoy:

Quality loops and a little bit of taunting underneath.

Please enjoy:

Not targeted at a rival gang, for Taru’s

Please enjoy:

crew wasn’t that sort of group,

Please enjoy:

but the daytime residents of the office buildings to either side of him.

Please enjoy:

A few final marks later

Please enjoy:

and the full tag was complete.

Please enjoy:

Returning the bottle to his waist,

Please enjoy:

he lifted his wrist device up and began poking at its buttons.

Please enjoy:

As he did so the invisible marks he had made on the wall began to shimmer

Please enjoy:

and activate, arranging the nano machines inside the paint

Please enjoy:

into functional micro projectors.

Please enjoy:

He then pointed his wrist at the lowest window on the wall,

Please enjoy:

still a couple stories up,

Please enjoy:

and clicked the project button.

Please enjoy:

The wall before him came to life

Please enjoy:

and a spinning projection of his tag appeared in front of the window.

Please enjoy:

The maned wolf smiled

Please enjoy:

and began to mark the rest of the windows on that level.

Please enjoy:

And then the next,

Please enjoy:

and the windows on the other side too.

Please enjoy:

Each time a new, bright red or blue projection appeared in full view of the window,

Please enjoy:

ready to be spotted by the office workers and bankers,

Please enjoy:

mocking them for their subservience to the system.

Please enjoy:

It was however about this time that Taru realized that he was no longer alone in the alley.

Please enjoy:

He lowered his gaze to the rather displeased looking security guard blocking the way to the street.

Please enjoy:

Normally this would not be an issue for Taru,

Please enjoy:

but for this particular alley the other way wasn’t as easily traversed as the way he had come in.

Please enjoy:

Still, he felt confident about his ability to escape along the alternative path.

Please enjoy:

The guard cleared his throat.

Please enjoy:

“About time you noticed me,”

Please enjoy:

he said with a gruff tone.

Please enjoy:

“Why hello there,” said Taru smugly.

Please enjoy:

His smile however began to fade

Please enjoy:

as he spotted the unusually long tail of the guard

Please enjoy:

and all its stripes.

Please enjoy:

“A lemur. Figures.”

Please enjoy:

“Now are you going to play nice or are you…”

Please enjoy:

started the guard.

Please enjoy:

He stopped talking however as the maned wolf turned

Please enjoy:

and began to sprint down the alley.

Please enjoy:

The guard started after,

Please enjoy:

but the tall maned wolf easily outpaced the lemur.

Please enjoy:

Taru soon reached the end of the alley

Please enjoy:

and its chain link fence.

Please enjoy:

Being well over six foot, it was relatively easy for him to vault over top of it

Please enjoy:

and onto the large piece of machinery on the far side.

Please enjoy:

And from there a pull up onto the ledge

Please enjoy:

that would give him access to the parking garage.

Please enjoy:

However, all the time Taru had made up by outrunning the lemur was lost as the guard leapt up to the garage level in a single bound.

Please enjoy:

The garage level was filled with expensive looking cars

Please enjoy:

and was unusually busy with traffic,

Please enjoy:

making straight sprints

Please enjoy:

tricky for the maned wolf.

Please enjoy:

A few close calls and one slide over some well dressed fox’s hood later,

Please enjoy:

and Taru was nearing the ramp down and out of the garage.

Please enjoy:

His thoughts of escape however vanished

Please enjoy:

as the guard leapt from a ledge above the exit right into Taru’s path.

Please enjoy:

“You gotta be kidding me,”

Please enjoy:

growled the maned wolf before turning and sprinting back up the ramp, with the guard in hot pursuit.

Please enjoy:

Up the garage he ran,

Please enjoy:

quickly aiming for the stairwell in the corner of the structure.

Please enjoy:

He began to hear the sound of

Please enjoy:

police drone sirens from below as he neared the door of the stairwell

Please enjoy:

and so quickly decided up was the way to go.

Please enjoy:

Two flights of stairs later

Please enjoy:

and he took the alternative exit from the garage onto a sky bridge.

Please enjoy:

He rushed across it

Please enjoy:

only to find the doors on the far side securely locked.

Please enjoy:

Taru looked over the side of the sky bridge,

Please enjoy:

witnessing the drones pulling up just outside the stairwell across the street.

Please enjoy:

He looked to his sides.

Please enjoy:

The building on that end of the sky bridge had complicated architecture he realized.

Please enjoy:

Just enough for him to grab onto and pull himself up some distance to a ledge.

Please enjoy:

He began climbing as the doors on the far side of the bridge opened

Please enjoy:

and the guard, followed by two bipedal robots, marched out.

Please enjoy:

The robots were the remote cores of the drone vehicles parked below

Please enjoy:

and likely run by the real officers some mile or two away.

Please enjoy:

They proceeded to cross the bridge but by the time they were at the far door

Please enjoy:

Taru was already on the ledge,

Please enjoy:

carefully balancing himself as he strolled his way

Please enjoy:

around the corner of the building.

Please enjoy:

Wary of more surprises from the lemur guard,

Please enjoy:

he kept his focus on this path forward

Please enjoy:

until the ledge ended at the edge of a large entry hall for the skyscraper.

Please enjoy:

He looked around to try to find a way forward.

Please enjoy:

And then he looked behind him.

Please enjoy:

As he expected, the guard was rounding the corner having left the not so nimble robots behind.

Please enjoy:

Taru then glanced down.

Please enjoy:

Above the entrance below

Please enjoy:

was a series of flag poles sporting a number of colorful banners, local and national.

Please enjoy:

Taru leapt. Grabbing the first pole hurt more than he expected,

Please enjoy:

but soon he was swinging back and forth.

Please enjoy:

He glanced at the approaching lemur before refocusing on the next flag pole.

Please enjoy:

As he swung forward, he let go of the pole and reached for the next, successfully grabbing it.

Please enjoy:

A couple swings later

Please enjoy:

and he was swinging on the third.

Please enjoy:

The final part of this traversing

Please enjoy:

was to extend a leg out on the next swing forward so he’d catch on the building again,

Please enjoy:

allowing him just enough leverage

Please enjoy:

to climb up on the ledge once more.

Please enjoy:

If he was an inch shorter

Please enjoy:

he’d have not been able to reach.

Please enjoy:

As he pulled himself up onto the next bit of ledge

Please enjoy:

he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye.

Please enjoy:

He looked to the middle of the three flag poles and saw the guard

Please enjoy:

hand landed atop it.

Please enjoy:

And was readying up to leap again.

Please enjoy:

Taru pulled himself up

Please enjoy:

and began to move along the ledge,

Please enjoy:

getting only a few meters along before the guard landed on the ledge behind him

Please enjoy:

and then immediately started to shimmy along after.

Please enjoy:

Taru rounded the next corner of the building and was delighted to see a possible way forward

Please enjoy:

that didn’t require as much swinging.

Please enjoy:

A little further along

Please enjoy:

the next building over was particularly close.

Please enjoy:

Particularly where there was a series of balconies.

Please enjoy:

Taru made this jump easily enough,

Please enjoy:

but the doors of the first balcony were locked.

Please enjoy:

Mindful of his pursuer,

Please enjoy:

he clamored over the railing

Please enjoy:

and hopped to the next balcony, and then the next,

Please enjoy:

finding time after time

Please enjoy:

that his way inside was locked.

Please enjoy:

He glanced over his shoulder and saw that the lemur was casually making his way still along the ledge,

Please enjoy:

not bothering with the more complicated antics the maned wolf was engaged in.

Please enjoy:

Taru tried a few more balconies but had no luck.

Please enjoy:

He then looked over the edge

Please enjoy:

and saw that there was one more row of balconies below him.

Please enjoy:

Over the railing one more time he went,

Please enjoy:

dropping down onto the next balcony,

Please enjoy:

and then once more down for a rather uncomfortable landing in the alley.

Please enjoy:

“We done?” asked the lemur

Please enjoy:

as he landed right behind Taru.

Please enjoy:

Taru didn’t bother to answer,

Please enjoy:

and instead returned to running.

Please enjoy:

The guard sighed and then started after,

Please enjoy:

operating a device to summon the police drones to his location.

Please enjoy:

Taru rounded the corner and kept running,

Please enjoy:

hopping over garbage and avoiding obnoxiously large holes in the concrete.

Please enjoy:

The end of this alley was starting to be a problem, he realized

Please enjoy:

as he neared it. A large piece of machinery

Please enjoy:

chugging away was blocking his path.

Please enjoy:

It had too many moving parts for the maned wolf to feel comfortable trying to climb it.

Please enjoy:

Instead he opted for the low route,

Please enjoy:

flinging himself under it

Please enjoy:

and sliding through a narrow gap under the machine.

Please enjoy:

The loud echoes of its workings slid overhead

Please enjoy:

and soon he was back on his feet.

Please enjoy:

The guard landed not too far behind him,

Please enjoy:

but as Taru began to pick up speed,

Please enjoy:

he began to leave the lemur behind.

Please enjoy:

Another turn, and then another

Please enjoy:

and he was back on the street.

Please enjoy:

He turned towards the bridge over the river

Please enjoy:

and went into a full sprint down the sidewalk.

Please enjoy:

The bridge was deserted other than the car traffic,

Please enjoy:

which was again heavier than normal for this hour.

Please enjoy:

Taru reached the middle of the bridge as he began to hear the sounds of sirens once more.

Please enjoy:

There was a figure yet following him he spotted

Please enjoy:

as he stopped to check his situation.

Please enjoy:

The lemur, still in hot pursuit,

Please enjoy:

struggling to catch up,

Please enjoy:

but still eager to do so.

Please enjoy:

Taru sighed, climbed up on the bridge railing,

Please enjoy:

and went over the side.

Please enjoy:

The guard pushed himself harder

Please enjoy:

and began to look over the side of the bridge as he came close to where the maned wolf had been.

Please enjoy:

But below was only the inky blackness of the river.

Please enjoy:

No maned wolf. No sign of splashes or impact.

Please enjoy:

The guard stopped

Please enjoy:

and looked over the side.

Please enjoy:

He craned his head around looking for a spot where his quarry could have grabbed the side of the bridge

Please enjoy:

and tried to hide.

Please enjoy:

But all he saw was the girders and solid concrete structure of the bridge below.

Please enjoy:

And nowhere even someone as tall as the mane wolf

Please enjoy:

could grab on to and swing underneath the bridge

Please enjoy:

without likely losing their grip and falling into the toxic river below.

Please enjoy:

The drones pulled up next to him

Please enjoy:

and the robots unraveled from their wheeled portions

Please enjoy:

to share in the gazing.

Please enjoy:

And then there was the conversation with the lemur, who was quite cross.

Please enjoy:

And quickly it was determined that likely the suspect had jumped into the river,

Please enjoy:

as unwise as that was.

Please enjoy:

And that they would be better served getting a statement elsewhere as the river patrol went to work looking for a body.

Please enjoy:

After all, no one had survived that jump before.

Please enjoy:

Taru overheard some of the conversation from his hiding spot behind the projection

Please enjoy:

of a solid expanse of concrete,

Please enjoy:

safe in the small gap in the side of the bridge, just out of view.

Please enjoy:

There he would wait until he was sure the coast was clear.

Please enjoy:

And then he’d returned to the safe house with an exciting story to tell.
