“Hey Buddy”

Please enjoy:

by Dirt Coyote Sacha rolled cold eggs around his plate,

Please enjoy:

twiddling his fork between his fingers.

Please enjoy:

The metal scratched about, irritating the two other wolves at the table.

Please enjoy:

Dad pretended not to hear it,

Please enjoy:

scrolling through his phone

Please enjoy:

and twitching with every scrape.

Please enjoy:

Mom, however, was not having it.

Please enjoy:

Her utensils clattered against the granite tabletop

Please enjoy:

and she coughed. "You know,

Please enjoy:

I'd sure like to meet Calvin this weekend.

Please enjoy:

He sounds lovely.

Please enjoy:

lovely." Subtle. It'd been a month.

Please enjoy:

Not since Sacha'd come out.

Please enjoy:

That happened years ago and all

Please enjoy:

discussions about that

Please enjoy:

were long since distant hazy memories.

Please enjoy:

It'd been a month since he told his parents about

Please enjoy:

Calvin, the charming dalmatian he started dating.

Please enjoy:

Sacha let his fork go,

Please enjoy:

pulling out his phone without taking his eyes off Mom.

Please enjoy:

"I can text him. He gets straight A’s so I'm sure his parents wouldn’t mind.

Please enjoy:

Maybe tonight, if I send it right now.”

Please enjoy:

Her tongue clicked in her cheek,

Please enjoy:

but he knew she'd do that.

Please enjoy:

Something in his teenage hormones told him

Please enjoy:

he had to make everything difficult,

Please enjoy:

especially if he knew it would make everything difficult.

Please enjoy:

The two’s stares bore into each other,

Please enjoy:

an argument boiling up to the surface underneath the silence.

Please enjoy:

A hard crack of ceramic wheels rolling over the driveway's cement slabs rang hard.

Please enjoy:

It was enough to distract them,

Please enjoy:

all six lupine ears

Please enjoy:

flashing upwards

Please enjoy:

to listen for an impending fall.

Please enjoy:

It never came and they relaxed.

Please enjoy:

Mom was first to speak.

Please enjoy:

"I think you know that's not what I'm saying," she said,

Please enjoy:

claws rapping at the table.

Please enjoy:

"Why can't Calvin just come over?”

Please enjoy:

Leaning in and lowering his voice,

Please enjoy:

Sacha continued,

Please enjoy:

“I don't see why I have to talk to Reggie first.

Please enjoy:

first." His little brother wouldn't be able to hear him from outside.

Please enjoy:

Not while practicing ollies on his skateboard,

Please enjoy:

but Sacha didn't like talking about him behind his back.

Please enjoy:

Mom dropped her voice similarly.

Please enjoy:

"I want him to understand.

Please enjoy:

We don't like springing any surprises on him.

Please enjoy:

him." Dad followed up, a chuckle in his voice,

Please enjoy:

"Boy nearly had a heart attack when we served salmon instead of hot dogs that one night.

Please enjoy:

night." Both Sacha and Mom glowered,

Please enjoy:

his sense of humor not welcome.

Please enjoy:

He rolled his eyes

Please enjoy:

and put himself back into his phone.

Please enjoy:

Sacha's fingers went up to his temple,

Please enjoy:

rubbing a patch of white fur that circled his eye.

Please enjoy:

"Why don’t you two talk with him?

Please enjoy:

You’re the adults.”

Please enjoy:

Her brow furrowed,

Please enjoy:

the argument rehashed for so long

Please enjoy:

it could walk on two feet.

Please enjoy:

“He’ll have questions.

Please enjoy:

Questions I won’t know the answer to.

Please enjoy:

And, no offense hunny,

Please enjoy:

but do you really want

Please enjoy:

your father to talk to him about this?”

Please enjoy:

Dad shrugged and mock frowned,

Please enjoy:

accepting the out like the joker he was.

Please enjoy:

It wasn’t that simple.

Please enjoy:

Dad pulled Sacha aside once and said they’d talk to Reggie if he really couldn’t,

Please enjoy:

but he had to at least try.

Please enjoy:

He had to genuinely

Please enjoy:

try and help his little brother understand his sexuality

Please enjoy:

before his father might intervene.

Please enjoy:

Not before then. Sacha pushed his plate away

Please enjoy:

like his responsibilities were on top.

Please enjoy:

“What do you want me to say?

Please enjoy:

I date dudes? Just tell him

Please enjoy:

I’m gay like he doesn’t already think that word means stupid

Please enjoy:

or bad?” Mom’s ears ducked,

Please enjoy:

but she pushed forward anyways,

Please enjoy:

“If he thinks that then

Please enjoy:

you can correct him on it.

Please enjoy:

He’ll listen to you.”

Please enjoy:

Frustration growled out from Sacha’s throat

Please enjoy:

and graveled his words as he spoke,

Please enjoy:

“What if he doesn’t?

Please enjoy:

What if he freaks out or something?”

Please enjoy:

Dad squinted, a warning to keep those growls in check.

Please enjoy:

Mom rubbed a paw through her headfur,

Please enjoy:

just as annoyed as Sacha.

Please enjoy:

“That’s why you need to talk to him

Please enjoy:

first.” It’d become circular, this argument.

Please enjoy:

Sacha’s paws came down hard on the table.

Please enjoy:

“You guys don’t understand!”

Please enjoy:

He winced, embarrassed at what he’d just done.

Please enjoy:

There was a ninety percent chance he was grounded,

Please enjoy:

no matter what he’d do.

Please enjoy:

Neither Mom nor Dad spoke,

Please enjoy:

their faces frozen in shock.

Please enjoy:

Seeing their expressions hurt him,

Please enjoy:

almost physically,

Please enjoy:

and he had to be honest with them.

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry. I wanted to tell him.

Please enjoy:

I really did. I just don’t want him to hate me,”

Please enjoy:

Sacha said, voice quivering.

Please enjoy:

Cause, oh god, he really did try.

Please enjoy:

The weekend prior,

Please enjoy:

he’d sat down in the driveway with Reggie.

Please enjoy:

He was ready to tell him everything

Please enjoy:

and it just got stuck in his chest.

Please enjoy:

All the words he’d meant to say,

Please enjoy:

and all he could do

Please enjoy:

was teach his little brother to do an ollie.

Please enjoy:

Mom rose and Sacha’s head went down.

Please enjoy:

He closed his eyes, ready for the scolding of a lifetime.

Please enjoy:

Arms draped over his shoulders, whiskers brushing against his own as she hugged him from behind.

Please enjoy:

Her cheek was warm,

Please enjoy:

his tear soaking into the fur on her muzzle.

Please enjoy:

“He’d never hate you,”

Please enjoy:

she said softly. “I know that, cause we love you too much to ever.

Please enjoy:

Him especially.” Sacha let out a sigh of relief,

Please enjoy:

her affection enough to pull off some of his worries.

Please enjoy:

When he opened his eyes,

Please enjoy:

Dad was smiling.

Please enjoy:

His eyebrows flicked up in a sorta,

Please enjoy:

“She’s right, you know?”

Please enjoy:

but at least he didn’t say it.

Please enjoy:

The front door opened,

Please enjoy:

skateboard collapsing onto the hardwood floors of the foyer.

Please enjoy:

Mom would give Reggie shit for that, but for now,

Please enjoy:

she released the hug and sat back in her seat.

Please enjoy:

Sacha nodded to both of them,

Please enjoy:

took a deep breath,

Please enjoy:

and walked into the living room.

Please enjoy:

Reggie was on the couch,

Please enjoy:

flicking through channels on the TV.

Please enjoy:

Two bluish-grey ears poked out of the helmet he’d not yet taken off.

Please enjoy:

A white spot of fur circled his eye same as Sacha’s.

Please enjoy:

He was so focused on screen, he barely registered his older brother sitting down next to him.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, buddy.” Reggie turned,

Please enjoy:

eyes and smile lit bright.

Please enjoy:

Sacha knew in that look,

Please enjoy:

everything was going to be alright.
