“Dragon Roasted Coffee Beans” by Jay “Shirou” Coughlan

You know that feeling you get when you go to the local cafe and take in that rich coffee smell? What if the blends were dragon roasted?

Today’s story is “Dragon Roasted Coffee Beans” by Jay “Shirou” Coughlan, who has written for the anthology ROAR 7 by Bad Dog Books and for Vancoufur, his local convention. Though not a coffee drinker himself, the idea of a dragon roasting her own coffee beans in a local cafe was too cozy of an idea not to share.

“Dragon Roasted Coffee Beans”

Please enjoy:

by Jay “Shirou” Coughlan

Please enjoy:

Crisp autumn sun streamed through the windows

Please enjoy:

of the Dragon Roast Café.

Please enjoy:

Lazy gold and crimson leaves floated down from the massive maple tree the café was built into.

Please enjoy:

Many decades ago,

Please enjoy:

as a favour to the proprietor,

Please enjoy:

Elven magic and skilled carpentry had been used in concert

Please enjoy:

to make the café and ancient tree one.

Please enjoy:

The floors and walls were made from the natural wood of the tree,

Please enjoy:

which still grew and thrived.

Please enjoy:

Even the tables, chairs, and counters had all been made of the maple wood they had removed.

Please enjoy:

Inside the café, the air was thick with the warm, bitter scent of roasting coffee and fire.

Please enjoy:

The tell-tale tickle of torched air hung about in a gentle, comforting haze

Please enjoy:

while the bright,

Please enjoy:

electric scent of the brews energized the room.

Please enjoy:

Some said that the scent of the coffee alone was what made the maple so massive over the years.

Please enjoy:

Many of the shop’s regulars had joked that the owner,

Please enjoy:

a storm gray dragon called Madeline,

Please enjoy:

was growing a third floor.

Please enjoy:

Madeline had always chuckled at the thought,

Please enjoy:

she knew that the tree was already large enough for many more floors than that.

Please enjoy:

The door opened with a tinkle of the bell.

Please enjoy:

A cold draft of crisp autumn air drifted in the first patron of the day,

Please enjoy:

a few amber leaves dancing at her feet.

Please enjoy:

A young doe in a thick felt jacket and red-gold scarf came in.

Please enjoy:

In her antlers stood a jet-black crow, clutching one of the doe’s branches

Please enjoy:

as his beady eyes took in the café.

Please enjoy:

Instantly Madeline turned from her morning preparations to greet the guest.

Please enjoy:

“Wendy, good morning!” She said.

Please enjoy:

Her muzzle split into a warm smile.

Please enjoy:

“You’re up early.” “Ah, yes, sorry about the mess,”

Please enjoy:

Wendy said as she approached.

Please enjoy:

“I need to get studying,

Please enjoy:

would you mind if I stayed here for a bit?”

Please enjoy:

“Not at all,” Madeline said.

Please enjoy:

She nodded her head towards the balcony.

Please enjoy:

“The second floor is usually quiet,

Please enjoy:

you’re welcome to stay as long as you need.”

Please enjoy:

Wendy quickly gave her thanks,

Please enjoy:

and trotted up the stairs,

Please enjoy:

eager to get going.

Please enjoy:

“She should be paying for something if she’s going to use our space,”

Please enjoy:

Archimedes grumbled.

Please enjoy:

He was a grouchy gryphon,

Please enjoy:

with fur of copper

Please enjoy:

and feathers of bronze.

Please enjoy:

He was Madeline’s partner both in life and in enterprise.

Please enjoy:

Madeline shrugged but didn’t have time to retort

Please enjoy:

as the first wave of morning customers began to file in.

Please enjoy:

Noses flared and sniffed the air as the rich, silky scent of roasted beans began to wake them from their morning stupor.

Please enjoy:

Coffees of all sorts were snatched from the counters almost before the orders were called.

Please enjoy:

Cappuccinos, brews, lattes, and espressos were all prepared and served with swift precision.

Please enjoy:

Many decades of practice

Please enjoy:

had made Madeline the fastest server in town.

Please enjoy:

Meanwhile, Archimedes was busy preparing the ingredients,

Please enjoy:

cleaning out the machines and the drip trays, and making sure his employer was unimpeded in her work.

Please enjoy:

They danced their familiar steps together,

Please enjoy:

each practiced and swift in the routine,

Please enjoy:

serving more drinks in an hour than they would the rest of the day combined.

Please enjoy:

Just as soon as the rush began,

Please enjoy:

the coffee shop emptied out and only a fraction of the crowd stayed.

Please enjoy:

Patrons, both regulars and newcomers alike,

Please enjoy:

milled about the shop in a lazy orchestra.

Please enjoy:

With the crowd thinned,

Please enjoy:

Madeline began her ritual of refilling her stores.

Please enjoy:

The smell of roasting beans wafted up through the café,

Please enjoy:

carried on an updraft of heat

Please enjoy:

and fire. The familiar crackle and roar of flame filled the air.

Please enjoy:

Everyone’s heads perked

Please enjoy:

and turned to watch as Madeline used her dragon-fire to roast the beans.

Please enjoy:

Ghostly, white-yellow flames with a sky-blue core

Please enjoy:

licked at the base of a heavy cast-iron bowl

Please enjoy:

she held in one hand.

Please enjoy:

Unfazed by her own heat,

Please enjoy:

her wrist rocked the bowl in a practiced motion,

Please enjoy:

the beans inside shaking and shifting,

Please enjoy:

making an orchestra of noise as they clattered against one another,

Please enjoy:

landing at the bottom for a moment of scorching heat

Please enjoy:

before being swept up again.

Please enjoy:

Everyone’s nose twitched,

Please enjoy:

almost in unison,

Please enjoy:

when the beans were thrown into the air,

Please enjoy:

their scent thrown out into the wilds.

Please enjoy:

The show went on for a few minutes.

Please enjoy:

Many patrons returned to their conversations and beverages,

Please enjoy:

but some of the newer customers kept watching.

Please enjoy:

Eventually, the flames died down, and the storm-gray dragon caught her breath.

Please enjoy:

She gently lowered the hot bowl onto a marble slab so as not to burn the wood of the counter.

Please enjoy:

She rushed to washed her hands in the sink, dried them,

Please enjoy:

and began scooping her claws through the cooling beans,

Please enjoy:

rotating them slowly to even out the heat.

Please enjoy:

The gentle shff, shff, shff, of the beans

Please enjoy:

bled into the cacophony of sound in the café,

Please enjoy:

letting those still watching know the show was over

Please enjoy:

and they could return to their conversations.

Please enjoy:

With a metal scoop in hand,

Please enjoy:

Madeline scooped the beans into a sealable bag and passed it along with three drinks

Please enjoy:

to the dark-skinned human woman across the counter.

Please enjoy:

Her child, maybe about 6 or 7 years of age was ecstatic,

Please enjoy:

almost wetting himself when he watched Madeline roast the marshmallow

Please enjoy:

on his hot chocolate with a quick wisp of fire.

Please enjoy:

Seeing his excitement

Please enjoy:

warmed her old heart.

Please enjoy:

She beamed and almost refused to take their payment,

Please enjoy:

delighting in the afterglow of making someone’s day that much more of an adventure.

Please enjoy:

Madeline’s throat rumbled a soft hum

Please enjoy:

and she prepared a few more drinks to take out to her guests.

Please enjoy:

She placed them all on a tray and quickly wiped down her workstation.

Please enjoy:

“I see that extra coffee,”

Please enjoy:

Eyed Archimedes as he returned with a pile of cups placed in a satchel over his back.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t recall anyone ordering that.”

Please enjoy:

“And here I thought you were too busy grumbling at misplaced sugar bowls to notice,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline smirked.

Please enjoy:

Archimedes frowned

Please enjoy:

and hopped up so his fore-claws were perched on the counter.

Please enjoy:

“I can multi-task.” Madeline crossed the short distance between them

Please enjoy:

and put a gentle claw on her partner’s head,

Please enjoy:

gently stroking between his ears.

Please enjoy:

His tall, feathered ears flicked back but the dragon could feel his muscles relax just a little.

Please enjoy:

He frowned, but let the motion continue.

Please enjoy:

“I would point out your wasting money,

Please enjoy:

but it hasn’t changed your mind before.”

Please enjoy:

Archimedes continued to refill the to-go cup displays

Please enjoy:

and clean the front counter.

Please enjoy:

“You’re welcome to keep reminding me,

Please enjoy:

I might listen one day.”

Please enjoy:

Madeline smiled and walked out of the counter with a swish of her tail onto the floor

Please enjoy:

Sitting by the door

Please enjoy:

was a kitsune couple,

Please enjoy:

white and orange respectively.

Please enjoy:

The lads had met at that very spot, years ago.

Please enjoy:

They were uncertain,

Please enjoy:

testing the waters of a new relationship.

Please enjoy:

Now they came by every week to enjoy tea

Please enjoy:

and each other’s company.

Please enjoy:

Every year on their anniversary,

Please enjoy:

Madeline would delight them with free drinks,

Please enjoy:

and a special treat to share.

Please enjoy:

“A rose-green tea for you, Yukiko,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said as she placed the simple mug next to the white kitsune.

Please enjoy:

Yukiko nodded in thanks,

Please enjoy:

“and a cappuccino with extra chocolate

Please enjoy:

and an extra espresso shot, topped with whipped cream for you, Ami.

Please enjoy:

I’m not sure how you manage that sugar.”

Please enjoy:

She smiled, passing it to the orange kitsune.

Please enjoy:

“It smells amazing as always, Miss Madeline,”

Please enjoy:

Ami said. He brightened as the scent filled his nose.

Please enjoy:

He took a finger

Please enjoy:

and stuck it into the whipped cream, scooping a large chunk out

Please enjoy:

and popping it into his mouth.

Please enjoy:

His four tails fanned out in delight.

Please enjoy:

Yukiko rolled his eyes but smiled at his boyfriend’s antics.

Please enjoy:

“I did bring you a spoon for that,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said, slipping a spoon from her apron pocket.

Please enjoy:

“Too slow,” Ami said through his mouthful.

Please enjoy:

Then he wiped his claw on a napkin and took the spoon from the dragon.

Please enjoy:

“But I don’t think Yuki wants me to tussle his fur with sticky claws,

Please enjoy:

thank you for thinking ahead of me.”

Please enjoy:

“Someone has to, right Yukiko?”

Please enjoy:

Madeline asked. Yukiko chuckled.

Please enjoy:

Ami took little time in scooping a big chunk of whipped cream off the top and stuffing it into his muzzle,

Please enjoy:

wisps of the white fluff catching on his whiskers.

Please enjoy:

Yukiko reached over to wipe the whipped cream from Ami’s face,

Please enjoy:

but once the white fox tried to pull away,

Please enjoy:

his orange other half leaned forward to lick it off Yukiko’s finger. Yukiko’s ears flicked back,

Please enjoy:

embarrassed by the act.

Please enjoy:

“You two are so cute together,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline smiled.

Please enjoy:

Both sets of kitsune ears flicked back,

Please enjoy:

but Ami wore a big smile on his face.

Please enjoy:

“It’s all Yuki, he mellows me out,”

Please enjoy:

He said with an ear-to-ear grin.

Please enjoy:

“Really?” Madeline teased, raising her eyebrow.

Please enjoy:

“I’d hate to see what you’re like without him around.

Please enjoy:

Do you bounce off of walls?”

Please enjoy:

“When he was studying for his finals a couple years ago

Please enjoy:

I was basically home alone.

Please enjoy:

I re-arranged all of our furniture and managed to break almost every plate we owned.

Please enjoy:

He nearly transmogrified me into a statue!”

Please enjoy:

“He would have deserved it,”

Please enjoy:

Yukiko chimed in,

Please enjoy:

his voice soft but rough like stepping through crunching snow.

Please enjoy:

“It would have been the best use of my diplomas so far.”

Please enjoy:

Ami stuck out his tongue and Yukiko flicked his nose, playfully.

Please enjoy:

“Well, you two enjoy your drinks,

Please enjoy:

but if he gets on your nerves I am looking for new décor,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said with a mischievous grin.

Please enjoy:

Yuki chuckled and Ami grinned sheepishly.

Please enjoy:

She excused herself from the two

Please enjoy:

and walked over to the next table.

Please enjoy:

Two tables down sat an elven author.

Please enjoy:

Her visits were sporadic but became more frequent

Please enjoy:

as deadlines and writer’s block loomed. She often

Please enjoy:

ordered multiple coffees a day,

Please enjoy:

each as dark as her skin, and as sweet as her voice.

Please enjoy:

One hand would be scribbling with a thick feathered quill,

Please enjoy:

the other would be holding her mug to her lips,

Please enjoy:

mid-sip as inspiration held her,

Please enjoy:

or as she desperately tried to put words to paper to make her own magic happen.

Please enjoy:

More than once the dragon hostess would take a quiet moment to sit with her,

Please enjoy:

reading over her latest prose, and making recommendations or suggestions.

Please enjoy:

They were rarely good,

Please enjoy:

but they often got the ink flowing.

Please enjoy:

Today, Alara was staring at her sheaf of parchment,

Please enjoy:

eyes glazed over.

Please enjoy:

The dragon picked up the empty coffee mug and placed it on her tray.

Please enjoy:

“Refill, Alara?” She asked with a knowing smile.

Please enjoy:

“Yes, please.” Mumbled the elf,

Please enjoy:

her eyes didn’t move and her hands remained trained on her temple.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll be back before you know it,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said with a swish of her tail.

Please enjoy:

She still had a coffee to deliver before refilling the author’s mug.

Please enjoy:

She ascended upstairs,

Please enjoy:

tail lifted to avoid the steps as it trailed behind her.

Please enjoy:

It swished with a

Please enjoy:

lazy serpentine sway.

Please enjoy:

The upstairs portion of the coffee shop was a half-floor mezzanine that looked out onto the first floor below.

Please enjoy:

Spiralling stairs creaked with each footstep.

Please enjoy:

They used to be young,

Please enjoy:

crisp, and straight when this café was built decades ago.

Please enjoy:

They had never bent or shifted,

Please enjoy:

made of fresh, clean maple wood.

Please enjoy:

But now they had stains from too many coffee spills

Please enjoy:

and they had soft, wide divots recessed into each wooden step

Please enjoy:

from decades of use,

Please enjoy:

warped and misshapen from a thousand feet walking up and down them.

Please enjoy:

But, though they complained,

Please enjoy:

they remained sturdy with no signs of giving in to the pressures foisted upon them.

Please enjoy:

Shelves of books and knick-knacks lined the walls on the second floor.

Please enjoy:

Leather-bound volumes filled the shelves,

Please enjoy:

all old and weathered.

Please enjoy:

Many no longer had their original cover on them,

Please enjoy:

having been rebound.

Please enjoy:

Some had pages replaced,

Please enjoy:

others were just on the cusp of being loved too much,

Please enjoy:

with weak spines, their passages held on with hope and dreams.

Please enjoy:

But even the most battered and beaten of these books

Please enjoy:

held every single word from the original text.

Please enjoy:

Many of these books were old fantasies and romances,

Please enjoy:

some were largely exaggerated accounts of notable adventurers going on quests or

Please enjoy:

encountering new and exciting creatures,

Please enjoy:

yet others were tomes of old knowledge,

Please enjoy:

magic spells and incantations long since outdated.

Please enjoy:

The books were broken up into sections, demarcated by the various knick-knacks from the café owner’s life.

Please enjoy:

A large globe sat between two sections.

Please enjoy:

Its surface was faded with time and its landmasses outdated by several decades at least.

Please enjoy:

On the globe were several small markings,

Please enjoy:

little X’s in various places.

Please enjoy:

Those with a trained eye could see though that the markings were not random.

Please enjoy:

Every other trinket on the shelves could be placed at the locations marked.

Please enjoy:

There was a jade dragon statuette

Please enjoy:

that seemed to depict the café’s proprietor in a majestic pose.

Please enjoy:

Another large gold medallion had words written in a long-lost language,

Please enjoy:

but the engraving in the center clearly depicted

Please enjoy:

a draconic face with sapphires in her eyes.

Please enjoy:

More wooden tables sat on this second floor,

Please enjoy:

a few were pulled together so Wendy could sit and study for her classes at the academy.

Please enjoy:

Papers and textbooks

Please enjoy:

filled every inch of space,

Please enjoy:

as she poured over formulas and incantations.

Please enjoy:

Cue-cards were scattered about,

Please enjoy:

covered with notes and questions to test her knowledge.

Please enjoy:

Corey sat in her antlers,

Please enjoy:

not at all fazed as the student’s head

Please enjoy:

moved about and jostled his perch.

Please enjoy:

She rarely purchased a drink or food,

Please enjoy:

having to save her money for school until she was able to get a job like her mother.

Please enjoy:

In many ways she was already much like her mother,

Please enjoy:

who used to sit in this exact spot,

Please enjoy:

reading over similar notes, years ago.

Please enjoy:

Wendy didn’t shift until Madeline had settled the hot mug on the table with a clink.

Please enjoy:

Her head rose, bleary-eyed,

Please enjoy:

and she stared at the drink.

Please enjoy:

“I… I didn’t order this,”

Please enjoy:

she said. “I know, it’s on the house.

Please enjoy:

I thought it might help keep you focussed.”

Please enjoy:

Madeline smiled,

Please enjoy:

looking over the tables pulled together for this study fest.

Please enjoy:

Corey, the crow, hopped down from Wendy’s antlers

Please enjoy:

and poked his beak at the coffee, seeming to enjoy its warmth.

Please enjoy:

He gave a gentle caw of appreciation,

Please enjoy:

hopping around the cup.

Please enjoy:

“Thank you, Miss Madeline,”

Please enjoy:

Wendy said. Her whole body seemed to relax a bit

Please enjoy:

as she took in a deep breath,

Please enjoy:

enjoying the scent.

Please enjoy:

“You look like your studying isn’t going so well.”

Please enjoy:

Wendy shrugged. “You wouldn’t happen to know the basis behind Romulus’s theorem on temporal spells, would you?”

Please enjoy:

“Nothing relevant to this century, I’m afraid,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said. Her mouth curled into a sympathetic smile.

Please enjoy:

Then her tail tensed,

Please enjoy:

a sense of déjà vu coming over her.

Please enjoy:

She had heard this question before.

Please enjoy:

“Actually…” Madeline strode over to her bookshelf.

Please enjoy:

Her claw briefly ran over the titles

Please enjoy:

and plucked a rather large volume from the center.

Please enjoy:

The dragon opened it in the middle

Please enjoy:

and began flipping through old, yellowed pages, gentle but quick

Please enjoy:

until she found the passage she was looking for.

Please enjoy:

“Your mother found this section very helpful.

Please enjoy:

Some of the details are out of date,

Please enjoy:

but she found it just made a lot of things click together.

Please enjoy:

She was so excited when she found it she came running up to the counter to tell me.”

Please enjoy:

Madeline set the book on top of Wendy’s notes.

Please enjoy:

The pages were yellowing and stiff, and the writing was beginning to fade and blur into the page,

Please enjoy:

but it was more or less legible.

Please enjoy:

The doe’s eyes scanned the page briefly

Please enjoy:

and she picked up the page with ginger hands.

Please enjoy:

“I can’t remember my mother being terribly excited about anything.

Please enjoy:

Did she study here a lot?”

Please enjoy:

Madeline nodded.

Please enjoy:

Wendy set the book down and leaned back in her seat.

Please enjoy:

“Do you know her well?”

Please enjoy:

Madeline smiled

Please enjoy:

and put her hand on Wendy’s shoulder.

Please enjoy:

“Do you like the coffee?”

Please enjoy:

She asked. Wendy nodded.

Please enjoy:

“That was the same thing your mother used to order during her study sessions.”

Please enjoy:

She said, a twinkle in her old eyes.

Please enjoy:

“Oh, it is really good,” Wendy said with a warm smile. Light was returning to her eyes. “Thank you very much.” “Any time,” Madeline

Please enjoy:

said.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll let you get back to studying.”

Please enjoy:

Wendy nodded, but her eyes already looked to the distance,

Please enjoy:

contemplating a question as her mind returned to her notes.

Please enjoy:

The dragon slipped down the stairs and back into her nook,

Please enjoy:

preparing her patron’s re-fill.

Please enjoy:

Alara perked up as if alerted by the mere aura of coffee.

Please enjoy:

“Oh, thank you, Madeline, you’re a treat,”

Please enjoy:

She said. The dark elf

Please enjoy:

eagerly cradled the cup in her hands,

Please enjoy:

taking a deep breath of the brew.

Please enjoy:

“How’s the progress going?”

Please enjoy:

Madeline placed the tray down on the table

Please enjoy:

and slid into the seat across from Alara,

Please enjoy:

looping her tail into the back.

Please enjoy:

“Awful,” Alara sneered.

Please enjoy:

“I’ve put my quill to the page ten times today,

Please enjoy:

and I think I might have written down twelve actual words.”

Please enjoy:

“Progress is progress, even if slow.”

Please enjoy:

Madeline chimed in.

Please enjoy:

“Well progress isn’t worth much if you don’t get far enough to meet your deadlines, I’m afraid.”

Please enjoy:

“What’s the passage about?”

Please enjoy:

“The main characters are entering an ancient cathedral,

Please enjoy:

half-buried and lost in the desert.

Please enjoy:

I’m just trying to get the emotions right,

Please enjoy:

get the readers to

Please enjoy:

really understand the feeling of a

Please enjoy:

hot desert sun on their backs, the sand in their shoes,

Please enjoy:

a whipping wind in their face.

Please enjoy:

At the same time,

Please enjoy:

the awe and just sheer might of the cathedral

Please enjoy:

need to be introduced,

Please enjoy:

this is really the part where everything starts to come together, I think…”

Please enjoy:

“Well, I have been to a couple of desert temples in my life,

Please enjoy:

although they weren’t ancient when I first went there.”

Please enjoy:

Alara’s attention was piqued,

Please enjoy:

her hand reached for a blank piece of paper

Please enjoy:

and she re-dipped her quill.

Please enjoy:

“How am I still surprised?

Please enjoy:

Tell. Me. Everything,”

Please enjoy:

She said, a lust for knowledge in her eye.

Please enjoy:

“Well, I don’t think words will ever do justice to the sand there.

Please enjoy:

Soft, almost mushy beneath your feet,

Please enjoy:

it gets everywhere,

Please enjoy:

I mean everywhere,

Please enjoy:

if you’re in it long enough.

Please enjoy:

It’s also hot, burning,

Please enjoy:

you’re essentially baking in an oven.

Please enjoy:

Even I felt uncomfortable out there.

Please enjoy:

The evenings are beautiful though,

Please enjoy:

you still have the sands baking beneath you, warm and cozy,

Please enjoy:

but the night sky is cool

Please enjoy:

and bright with a thousand twinkling stars.”

Please enjoy:

Alara scribbled down each word with chicken scratch writing,

Please enjoy:

cleanliness swept aside for speed.

Please enjoy:

“That sounds beautiful,”

Please enjoy:

She said after a moment,

Please enjoy:

putting down her quill.

Please enjoy:

“It must be amazing to actually get to visit and stay in these places.

Please enjoy:

Inspiration must be abundant in you!

Please enjoy:

I’m surprised you don’t have novels bursting out of your head!”

Please enjoy:

“Oh hush, you.” Madeline flushed with a coy smile.

Please enjoy:

“I never had the patience to develop writing as a skill,

Please enjoy:

I’d much rather read what you’ve come up with.”

Please enjoy:

“All the places you’ve seen,

Please enjoy:

all the things you’ve done.

Please enjoy:

I’d love to sit here for hours just

Please enjoy:

picking your brain for those details.

Please enjoy:

I’d be bursting with inspiration!”

Please enjoy:

Alara grinned wide from ear to ear.

Please enjoy:

“Owning a coffee shop must seem terribly dull after living a life like yours.

Please enjoy:

Especially as a dragon!

Please enjoy:

Most dragons you see are out there in important roles,

Please enjoy:

like owning merchant trades or

Please enjoy:

leading countries.

Please enjoy:

Why do you even stay here?”

Please enjoy:

“I think most other dragons are craving something,

Please enjoy:

they all want to fill some void, so they stash it with

Please enjoy:

treasures and objects of value

Please enjoy:

and power of one sort or another.

Please enjoy:

I think they’re missing the point.

Please enjoy:

This,” Madeline gestured

Please enjoy:

out to the crowd, the shop,

Please enjoy:

“Is no less important.

Please enjoy:

It took me a long time to find this.”

Please enjoy:

“I’m not sure a coffee shop quite compares to leading a country,”

Please enjoy:

Alara said, “Not that I’m saying it isn’t worthwhile.

Please enjoy:

worthwhile.” She hastily added.

Please enjoy:

The sound of something crashing

Please enjoy:

and a strangled cry from upstairs interrupted their conversation.

Please enjoy:

Both of them whipped their heads up to the mezzanine.

Please enjoy:

Archimedes had already launched himself upwards,

Please enjoy:

skipping the stairs entirely with a flap of his wings,

Please enjoy:

and landing on the railing.

Please enjoy:

The way his ears flicked back clutched at Madeline’s chest.

Please enjoy:

“Please excuse me,”

Please enjoy:

She said to Alara.

Please enjoy:

She slipped out of the chair and dashed up the stairs,

Please enjoy:

taking them three at a time

Please enjoy:

until she could see the scene. Wendy

Please enjoy:

stood over her tables,

Please enjoy:

staring helplessly at her notes and books.

Please enjoy:

Her mug was toppled over,

Please enjoy:

brown liquid spilling, spreading darkness across the pages.

Please enjoy:

For a moment, there was relief as no one appeared to be hurt and the tension in Madeline’s chest

Please enjoy:

relaxed somewhat.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll go get something to clean this up with,”

Please enjoy:

Archimedes muttered,

Please enjoy:

and he lept off the balcony back to the first floor.

Please enjoy:

Wendy began to helplessly pick at the mess,

Please enjoy:

lifting a coffee-soaked note

Please enjoy:

then setting back down, uncertain where to even begin.

Please enjoy:

Corey was hopped up on the railing,

Please enjoy:

looking over the carnage.

Please enjoy:

His beady eyes seemed somehow sad.

Please enjoy:

“I just... I don’t know,

Please enjoy:

my notes are ruined.

Please enjoy:

I forgot the cup was

Please enjoy:

there I reached for a page and-

Please enjoy:

and-” Madeline crossed the distance between them in swift strides and gently guided Wendy to her chair again.

Please enjoy:

“Shh, it’s all right. We’ll get this sorted,” she said,

Please enjoy:

reassuring the doe.

Please enjoy:

She frowned inwardly at herself for bringing the unexpected coffee.

Please enjoy:

“Oh.” Alara had followed Madeline upstairs and gasped upon seeing the wreckage.

Please enjoy:

She came over as well,

Please enjoy:

poking at the notes.

Please enjoy:

“Well, it’s not so bad as it seems,”

Please enjoy:

She said with a smile.

Please enjoy:

Alara picked up one of the notes,

Please enjoy:

letting it drip sadly over the table.

Please enjoy:

“I’d hardly be a writer if I didn’t spill my share of coffee over my work!

Please enjoy:

I have a spell to remove spilled liquids from paper.

Please enjoy:

It may take some time using it to this extent,”

Please enjoy:

She puzzled over the mess,

Please enjoy:

eyeing it up for the size of the spell she’d need.

Please enjoy:

“B-but mid-terms are to

Please enjoy:

-tomorrow, and I’m already behind on projects and- and-”

She was having a hard time catching her breath between ugly sobs. “I-I’ll ne

Please enjoy:

-mom will be mad-” Madeline put a heavy hand on her back and began to massage the doe.

Please enjoy:

“Nonsense, Wendy, you will do great,

Please enjoy:

and your mother will still be proud of you,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said. “E-easy f-for you to say,

Please enjoy:

you don’t li-live with her,”

Please enjoy:

Wendy retorted, a fresh wave of tears bursting forth.

Please enjoy:

Madeline couldn’t help her muzzle from splitting into a gentle grin.

Please enjoy:

She pulled up a chair with her tail and sat next to Wendy,

Please enjoy:

pulling her closer.

Please enjoy:

“She’s not going to be mad,

Please enjoy:

we’re going to fix this,

Please enjoy:

and even without your notes

Please enjoy:

I know you’ll pass with flying colours,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline said. “I just need you to take some deep breaths.”

Please enjoy:

Wendy gulped back some tears,

Please enjoy:

and Madeline softly led her through some breaths,

Please enjoy:

calming her down through ugly sobs.

Please enjoy:

There was a flash of blue light and both of them turned to Alara, who was holding a yellowed sheet of now dry notes.

Please enjoy:

“Good news, the notes are legible!

Please enjoy:

Bad news, the sheet is still yellow,

Please enjoy:

not much I can do about that.”

Please enjoy:

The author grinned,

Please enjoy:

handing Wendy the page.

Please enjoy:

The doe sniffed

Please enjoy:

and wiped her nose before taking the sheet. “Th

Please enjoy:

-that’s incredible,

Please enjoy:

would you teach me the spell?”

Please enjoy:

“It would certainly make the process faster,”

Please enjoy:

Alara smiled. There was a flutter of feathers as Archimedes returned to the railing next to Corey,

Please enjoy:

making the surprised crow leap and caw indignantly.

Please enjoy:

“Hush, bird brain,”

Please enjoy:

Archimedes snapped. “There’s

Please enjoy:

a reason I got the railing reinforced,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline whispered, leaning over to Wendy.

Please enjoy:

The young witch giggled.

Please enjoy:

Archimedes rolled his eyes then dropped to the floor, pulling out a pile of cloths from his satchel

Please enjoy:

and beginning to mop up the building puddle.

Please enjoy:

“I brought a couple of friends for you three,

Please enjoy:

the foxes wouldn’t stop bugging me until I told them what was going on,”

Please enjoy:

Archimedes grumbled.

Please enjoy:

As he said that, Ami and Yukiko both crested over the stairs,

Please enjoy:

ears perked, curious.

Please enjoy:

“What he forgot to mention,”

Please enjoy:

Ami added, “Was we brought the mop and bucket.”

Please enjoy:

“Figured if they were going to be nosey, they could help out,”

Please enjoy:

Archimedes muttered.

Please enjoy:

“Is he always a grump?”

Please enjoy:

Ami asked as he began mopping the floor around the table.

Please enjoy:

“Only when he’s awake,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline winked.

Please enjoy:

“Thank you for helping out, you really don’t have to.” “Heh,

Please enjoy:

it’s our pleasure, Miss Madeline,”

Please enjoy:

Ami gave a playful bow before dunking his mop back into the bucket.

Please enjoy:

Alara was demonstrating her cleaning spell to both Yukiko and Wendy, who watched on studiously.

Please enjoy:

After the example,

Please enjoy:

Yukiko frowned, picking up one of the textbooks.

Please enjoy:

He placed his hand on the top and muttered the same words Alara had,

Please enjoy:

igniting a bright blue light.

Please enjoy:

However, the book remained dripping,

Please enjoy:

unchanged. “They have anti-magic spells on them,”

Please enjoy:

He said with a frown.

Please enjoy:

“Prevents cheating and copying.”

Please enjoy:

“And cleaning,” Alara added with a grimace.

Please enjoy:

Wendy’s heart dropped. “I

Please enjoy:

-I can’t afford new books...”

Please enjoy:

“I could try roasting them,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline suggested,

Please enjoy:

“They might end up singed though.”

Please enjoy:

Yukiko smiled and shook his head.

Please enjoy:

“I have these at home,

Please enjoy:

only a couple editions old,”

Please enjoy:

He offered, “You can have them.”

Please enjoy:

“Oh my gosh, thank you!”

Please enjoy:

Wendy cried, wrapping her arms around Yukiko.

Please enjoy:

He looked a bit uncomfortable at the contact,

Please enjoy:

his muzzle tilted to avoid her antlers,

Please enjoy:

but after a moment put his arms gently around her

Please enjoy:

and returned the embrace.

Please enjoy:

“Come on you two!” Alara laughed,

Please enjoy:

waving her hand. “We’ll get these notes cleaned faster if you guys stop hugging and start helping!”

Please enjoy:

Wendy and Yukiko set to work immediately,

Please enjoy:

dropping the destroyed quills and books into a bag to contain the mess.

Please enjoy:

Madeline took up a few rags and began sopping up the coffee on the table,

Please enjoy:

delighting in the comradery.

Please enjoy:

“You’re all amazing,” She said,

Please enjoy:

dropping her soaked rag into the mop bucket.

Please enjoy:

“Coffees are on the house for everyone!”

Please enjoy:

She announced, making Archimedes groan.

Please enjoy:

“Actually, Miss Madeline.

Please enjoy:

We had something we wanted to ask you.”

Please enjoy:

Ami stuck his mop in the bucket and rummaged through his coat pockets.

Please enjoy:

He pulled out a small, white envelope, sealed with a wad of golden wax,

Please enjoy:

addressed to the dragon in cursive.

Please enjoy:

“We’re getting married!

Please enjoy:

And we were hoping you’d come.

Please enjoy:

Well, actually,

Please enjoy:

we were kind of hoping you’d let us rent out the café for the ceremony.”

Please enjoy:

He said. His tails seemed to flick nervously.

Please enjoy:

“Its been such a huge part of our lives.

Please enjoy:

We promise the ceremony won’t be too big!”

Please enjoy:

A tear burned at the corner of Madeline’s eye

Please enjoy:

and her heart swelled with pride.

Please enjoy:

With a breath, she held back the joy threatening to ruin her composure.

Please enjoy:

“You’re the first invitation as well,” Yukiko said. “Of course, you’re invited too.” Ami pulled out a second envelope and handed it to Archimedes. The gryphon blinked, eyes wide and confused as he looked at the envelope. “Well, I guess we

Please enjoy:

could.

Please enjoy:

I mean, if we’re given sufficient notice...

Please enjoy:

I don’t think there’s a good reason to say no,

Please enjoy:

so long as it’s paid for.

Please enjoy:

I mean-” Archimedes flustered,

Please enjoy:

lost at the invitation.

Please enjoy:

He looked up to Madeline who was clutching the invitation to her chest.

Please enjoy:

“Of course, you can,”

Please enjoy:

She said with a smile.

Please enjoy:

“We would be honoured!”

Please enjoy:

Ami’s muzzle split into a wide, goofy grin as his tails wagged like massive flags.

Please enjoy:

Yukiko smiled as he packed up Wendy’s notes into her bag.

Please enjoy:

“We’ll work out the details later,”

Please enjoy:

Ami said, sliding over to his fiancé.

Please enjoy:

“Come on, Wendy! Let’s go get those boring, old textbooks!”

Please enjoy:

“I’ve got some tips for the exams that will help,” Yukiko said before he turned to wave behind them as they left.

Please enjoy:

Corey soared overhead,

Please enjoy:

following the three

Please enjoy:

and circling above.

Please enjoy:

“Would you mind taking the invitation and putting it in my office for now?”

Please enjoy:

She slipped the envelope into Archimedes’ satchel.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll bring the mop bucket downstairs.”

Please enjoy:

“This has been too much excitement for me, honestly,

Please enjoy:

I’m going to go on my lunch break,”

Please enjoy:

He said. He leapt onto the railing once more,

Please enjoy:

then paused for a second.

Please enjoy:

“It is nice of them to invite us both,”

Please enjoy:

He added, with the ghost of a smile in his eyes.

Please enjoy:

Then he grunted and shoved off,

Please enjoy:

gliding down to the floor below.

Please enjoy:

“I think I see why you stay around this shop,”

Please enjoy:

Alara noted, smiling as her hands brushed over the worldly trinkets.

Please enjoy:

“It’s not for everyone,”

Please enjoy:

Madeline admitted.

Please enjoy:

“But I love it.” “I admit

Please enjoy:

I didn’t expect there to be so much excitement in a cafe,

Please enjoy:

it’s certainly inspired me to get back to work,”

Please enjoy:

Alara said. “But you’re right.

Please enjoy:

It may not be like running a country,

Please enjoy:

but still important.”

Please enjoy:

“Go write your novel, Alara,

Please enjoy:

I’m sure it will be a

Please enjoy:

best-seller,” Madeline said as she waved the elf off.

Please enjoy:

They shared a grin

Please enjoy:

and Alara left down the stairs.

Please enjoy:

Madeline stood and looked over the balcony,

Please enjoy:

looking over the expanse of her domain.

Please enjoy:

Few dragons bothered with something as small and meaningless as a café.

Please enjoy:

Preferring to rule of world of economics or politics,

Please enjoy:

taking up roles as bankers or owning vast chains of markets to control the sale of goods.

Please enjoy:

Madeline didn’t care for any of that.

Please enjoy:

This, here, was her hoard.

Please enjoy:

A thousand lives ran through her café

Please enjoy:

each in a million short snippets.

Please enjoy:

All the hearts she’d touched,

Please enjoy:

all the generations she’d seen grow up.

Please enjoy:

Entire stories unfolded before her eyes;

Please enjoy:

the marriage she’d help blossom,

Please enjoy:

the adventures she’d helped start,

Please enjoy:

the wonder she’d put into a child’s eye, all from a simple little coffee shop.
