Last time, our narrator was asked by his old friend

Speaker:

Speaker:

He'd never seen Zeke more than a friend,

Now the question for the husky is quite simple -

does he make the leap and take a chance,

or confine another adventure

into another thwarted dream?

Speaker:

Please enjoy “Zeke’s Blue Hole”

Speaker:

by Televassi, Part 2 of 2

Speaker:

"Diving a blue hole is a once in a lifetime experience,"

Speaker:

Zeke grinned, nub tail twitching behind him as he spoke in his best

Speaker:

peppy, client engagement tone.

Speaker:

"They're formed from caves which flooded

Speaker:

when sea levels rose at the end of the last ice age,

Speaker:

their roofs collapsing in the process.

Speaker:

Their deep namesake -

Speaker:

blue - comes from physics.

Speaker:

Water absorbs longer wavelengths of the light spectrum first, so the deeper you go,

Speaker:

the darker the blue hue becomes."

Speaker:

The hyena paused, looking around the mess table

Speaker:

at the assembled dive crew. They were a range of species - a motley mix of canids, one very scruffy looking wolf

Speaker:

(his fur was absolutely clogged with dried salt),

Speaker:

a handful of cats (who all looked immaculate despite

Speaker:

the salt), and a tall, buff elk (who'd

Speaker:

purposefully cut his antlers specifically for this liveaboard

Speaker:

so they wouldn't get in the way when diving any wrecks).

Speaker:

"Torvelu's Blue Hole is certainly deep -

Speaker:

over 200 metres from our best estimates.

Speaker:

There haven't been any technical dives beyond 100 metres,

Speaker:

and to date no one has reached the bottom.

Speaker:

bottom." Zeke paused, taking a moment to change tone.

Speaker:

"Of course, this is well beyond the limits of recreational diving.

Speaker:

We won't be going

Speaker:

anywhere near those sorts of depths, but there's plenty to see within the first thirty metres of this illuminating blue

Speaker:

amphitheatre..." Zeke continued through the usual catalogue of most dive briefings:

Speaker:

facts about expected flora and fauna,

Speaker:

a note about expected currents,

Speaker:

and features of interest along the route he'd drawn on the galley's whiteboard in blue, red, and black marker.

Speaker:

I still paid attention,

Speaker:

but I'd lost interest in the meaning of his words,

Speaker:

instead enjoying the pleasant sound of his voice washing over my ears... "...

Speaker:

so remember. Keep an eye on your depth gauge.

Speaker:

Set your dive computer to a maximum depth of thirty metres,

Speaker:

keep a close watch on your air pressure,

Speaker:

and stick close to your buddy.

Speaker:

buddy." The hyena made eye contact with everyone in the group,

Speaker:

moving on only when they nodded in agreement.

Speaker:

I shivered when his eyes found mine,

Speaker:

hidden behind the soft, swaying locks of purple and black from his headfur.

Speaker:

It took me a moment longer to nod than everyone else.

Speaker:

"Good! And with the safety done, remember to enjoy yourself!"

Speaker:

He chirped, hopping down onto the dive deck.

Speaker:

The rest of the crew finished up their notes for their own logbooks

Speaker:

and began their pre-dive checks - testing their

Speaker:

regulators, the taste and scent of their air tanks, checking weights, fins, masks, BCDs -

Speaker:

once, then once again.

Speaker:

I was quiet as I squeezed into my wetsuit quickly,

Speaker:

hoping the smell of sea and salt would overpower

Speaker:

my hasty attempt

Speaker:

to wash away all trace from ten

Speaker:

minutes earlier.

Speaker:

"How was I?" Zeke asked quietly,

Speaker:

his tail gently brushing my side as we went about our own buddy checks.

Speaker:

"You forgot to mention you discovered it."

Speaker:

"I figured a little modesty wise,"

Speaker:

he blushed, looking away as he fiddled with his fins.

Speaker:

"Perhaps," I nodded,

Speaker:

spitting into my mask and rubbing the saliva across the lens.

Speaker:

"But going on a dive with the site's discoverer

Speaker:

adds a certain, je ne sais quoi."

Speaker:

"Or, alternatively, a whole heap of pressure that the site will deliver,"

Speaker:

Zeke said quietly.

Speaker:

"I'm sure it will.

Speaker:

will." I nodded, patting him on the shoulder.

Speaker:

I bit my tongue, trying to avoid voicing my thoughts about his other blue hole.

Speaker:

We let the palpable silence hang between us as we clipped into our dive gear and shuffled down onto the

Speaker:

RIB. It was a short five minutes as the boat skimmed across the clam sea,

Speaker:

the clear, shallow waters shifting to a deep blue hue

Speaker:

as we crossed to the centre of the hole. "You ok?" Zeke asked, pulling his regulator from his muzzle as the RIB slowed to a halt.

Speaker:

The deep, midnight azure lapped at all sides.

Speaker:

It was hard to swallow the silly feeling that we hovered over some otherworldly precipice,

Speaker:

and that diving in would result in no way back.

Speaker:

"I'm fine," I replied and stuck my regulator in my muzzle.

Speaker:

I gave my BCD's inflator hose a quick squeeze,

Speaker:

the valves on the back of my jacket hissing as it inflated,

Speaker:

and then dumped the excess air.

Speaker:

I signed OK and leaned back off the side of the RIB.

Speaker:

The splash of the cool water

Speaker:

and murmur of bubbles around me heralded my immersion,

Speaker:

bringing relief that there would be no more talking

Speaker:

for at least sixty minutes.

Speaker:

For a moment we were in complete suspense;

Speaker:

the movement of our air bubbles bringing any sense of which way was up and down.

Speaker:

The surface was distant above

Speaker:

and the bottom lost

Speaker:

further below. When we reached 30 metres I signalled OK again

Speaker:

and swam up close behind the hyena,

Speaker:

keeping one eye on my depth gauge and the other on the perfect view of his shapely body

Speaker:

encased in black neoprene,

Speaker:

grateful for the opportunity to be so close to him.

Speaker:

We swam further, until the sinkhole's walls faded in from the gloom.

Speaker:

They were sheer, extending deeper beyond our sight in the clear water,

Speaker:

but as we slowly rose the corals bloomed, dazzling us with the full spectrum of colour.

Speaker:

Vast sea fans stretched out into the open blue,

Speaker:

tiny pygmy seahorses delicately clutching at the branches with their tails,

Speaker:

while sleepy turtles nestled between cracks in the walls slumbered through our passing.

Speaker:

I lost count of the myriad of colourful shoals darting back and forth -

Speaker:

the entire rim filled with a rich array of life,

Speaker:

sheltered from the rest of the ocean.

Speaker:

Sixty minutes passed far too quickly.

Speaker:

Soon enough we were back on the surface:

Speaker:

a world full of words that I had

Speaker:

no idea how to order anymore. ***

Speaker:

"That dive sure was something, right?"

Speaker:

Zeke smiled and took a swig from the brown beer bottle.

Speaker:

The hyena had settled on the topside of the boat,

Speaker:

paws dangling through the scupper at the base of the deck.

Speaker:

I sat cross-legged in the middle,

Speaker:

arms folded over my legs, pretending

Speaker:

that I was somehow uncomfortable with the idea of straying into a staff only part of the ship. "It's definitely a change." I sighed, frustrated with myself and my belated reply. I could see how my lack of enthusiasm hurt him - his ears dipped and his neck fluff drooped. "Not a fan?" "I didn't say

Speaker:

that,"

Speaker:

I replied quickly,

Speaker:

but I didn't know what else to say -

Speaker:

I didn't know how to say what was really bothering me.

Speaker:

"It was just... quite

Speaker:

breathtaking. I've never seen anything quite like it."

Speaker:

I swung my head to the side and stared across the wide Sargasso Sea.

Speaker:

Its beauty stretched uninterrupted in all directions -

Speaker:

ribbons of emerald green flanked by azure, crystal waters that extended in all directions against the setting sun.

Speaker:

Far in the distance, a few stray slivers of land beckoned, not a single light

Speaker:

glowing upon them as the palm trees swayed in tropical idyll.

Speaker:

I kinda wanted to jump overboard and swim to their shore,

Speaker:

and in their unblemished simplicity

Speaker:

return to the natural primacy of being -

Speaker:

where there was no fear or doubt for what I felt.

Speaker:

"We should probably add some wrecks to future itineraries.

Speaker:

Give things a bit of variety still, so it's not all reefs,"

Speaker:

Zeke said, once again steering the conversation,

Speaker:

clearly thinking about the elk

Speaker:

that'd cut his antlers for the trip.

Speaker:

"Maybe another time,"

Speaker:

I shrugged, ignoring how Zeke flicked his ears questioningly about the gap between us.

Speaker:

"But I think you should include that dive.

Speaker:

Personally, your Blue Hole is better draw than the one in Dahab."

Speaker:

"Oh yeah?" He smirked.

Speaker:

I flicked my eyes in annoyance.

Speaker:

"Yeah," I persevered.

Speaker:

"I know you were worried about people getting in trouble,

Speaker:

but that's why you demand experience as well as disclaimers.

Speaker:

No one's pushing anyone to take the plunge. In the end,

Speaker:

you've got to trust you know what you want, and be able to see it

Speaker:

through." Zeke shrugged, ears twitching.

Speaker:

Perhaps he sensed the deeper meaning I hid inside, but he remained silent.

Speaker:

I felt my next words building on the tip of my tongue,

Speaker:

growing stronger

Speaker:

despite the sip - then gulp - of beer I took.

Speaker:

The hyena meanwhile brushed his purple mane to the side, thick locks quivering alluringly in the evening breeze.

Speaker:

Stars, he looked beautiful -

Speaker:

at home among the open sea, his movements quick, alive, and free as the elements.

Speaker:

I could barely contain my envy. Soon enough

Speaker:

I'd be back behind a

Speaker:

desk, salt washed out of my mane,

Speaker:

sea-breeze in my lungs a distant memory.

Speaker:

I didn't even care that it meant my curly tail would be restored to its full glory.

Speaker:

"Is everything all right?"

Speaker:

Zeke asked again,

Speaker:

this time shuffling close to me.

Speaker:

"You've been acting all weird recently."

Speaker:

Stars, spare me. I thought. Can't he just say it?

Speaker:

I took a gulp of beer, practically draining the brown bottle.

Speaker:

"I've known you for a while.

Speaker:

while." He pressed again. I could feel his eyes searching for my own but I kept avoiding them.

Speaker:

He stood up and sighed loudly,

Speaker:

grabbing himself another beer from the icebox.

Speaker:

He flicked the cap off with a sharp claw.

Speaker:

"I'm sorry about earlier, but look, please don't-"

Speaker:

"Don't apologise for it."

Speaker:

I was giddy, swaying from the erratic beat of my heart.

Speaker:

My mouth hung open while I tried to find the words, but all my head could say was fuck it,

Speaker:

go for it. "I really liked it...

Speaker:

you." I felt like I shrank and grew at the same time -

Speaker:

my relative size in the universe thrown into doubt as I finally cast aside the confines of everything I knew.

Speaker:

"You... want to see me again?"

Speaker:

Zeke asked, flicking an ear.

Speaker:

I caught him looking at me out of the corner of his eye.

Speaker:

My own strained to hear him; the quiet breeze playing with my mane sounding like a hurricane.

Speaker:

"Yeah," I whispered.

Speaker:

My heart thudded like it was made of thick wet clay, but my blood

Speaker:

still roared as it surged past my ears. I kept looking out to the horizon, watching the sunset,

Speaker:

focusing on how he made me feel.

Speaker:

How I wasn't just hoping for some fun, or something fun to explore. I wanted

Speaker:

to try for something more,

Speaker:

something that I'd never noticed or paid heed to in all our time together.

Speaker:

"If that's okay." I gulped.

Speaker:

Each second passed like agony.

Speaker:

Zeke was quiet for a while, but when he did speak, there was an edge of giddy anticipation to his words

Speaker:

that made me unashamed of my own.

Speaker:

"If not - that's fine - just please, don't make a thing out out it-"

Speaker:

"Have you ever... you know?" The hyena

Speaker:

tilted his head, nudging me.

Speaker:

"No." I spoke quickly.

Speaker:

"But I want to try-"

Speaker:

The hyena closed the gap between me, his features tinged as the sunset shrunk closer to the horizon,

Speaker:

rendering most detail into dark silhouettes.

Speaker:

His growl rumbled in his throat,

Speaker:

matching my own. I could still see his delicate tongue as his parted muzzle met my own -

Speaker:

see the intensity to his eyes as he tasted me on his lips.

Speaker:

I let words slip away once more,

Speaker:

our arms folding around each other as our bodies sought to match the connection of our kiss.

Speaker:

We surfaced from that embrace gasping for air,

Speaker:

both of us irritated that our bodies couldn't remain entwined for longer.

Speaker:

"You don't hesitate even,"

Speaker:

the yeen smiled at me,

Speaker:

his muzzle brushing close once again to my lips.

Speaker:

I could feel his hot breath on my nose.

Speaker:

"I want more," I whispered.

Speaker:

"Well," Zeke grunted.

Speaker:

"No one's coming up here."

Speaker:

He spoke with such surety.

Speaker:

My body ached to believe him,

Speaker:

but still, the fear of

Speaker:

getting caught was strong -

Speaker:

enough that he picked it up

Speaker:

on my scent on his next breath.

Speaker:

"They're doing a night dive in the shallows,

Speaker:

skirting the rim of the Blue Hole,"

Speaker:

Zeke breathed into my ear,

Speaker:

clutching his chest against my own.

Speaker:

"You didn't tell me about this..."

Speaker:

"I had a feeling that when I handed you that beer and asked you to join me up here,

Speaker:

you were interested in something other

Speaker:

than a dive. " His strong, firm paw pushed me down against the deck,

Speaker:

the tan streaks of his fur

Speaker:

gleaming in the final rays of the day.

Speaker:

Beneath us and out of sight, there was the final immutable chatter of pre-dive checks, followed by several splashes

Speaker:

as the rest of the crew entered the water.

Speaker:

I held my breath

Speaker:

as I waited for his next move.

Speaker:

"What do you think that might be?"

Speaker:

I breathed. "I have an idea..."

Speaker:

He shifted his position on top of me, sliding out of his shorts with practised efficiency

Speaker:

while I wiggled against my own underneath him,

Speaker:

finally slipping free of their confines

Speaker:

with his helping paw.

Speaker:

We took a moment,

Speaker:

pausing to appreciate the natural intimacy between us. His bare fur on mine.

Speaker:

The gentle breeze between the two of us.

Speaker:

If I closed my eyes I could believe we were alone on an island together,

Speaker:

the rest of the world and its cares unknown.

Speaker:

"I really liked the look of you this morning..."

Speaker:

"I wondered," the hyena replied,

Speaker:

straddling my stomach with his hips.

Speaker:

"And I'm glad." "Was it an accident?"

Speaker:

I asked, feeling that familiar tightness in my sheath.

Speaker:

"Yes," Zeke blushed momentarily.

Speaker:

"What on earth were you doing?"

Speaker:

I growled needfully.

Speaker:

He shifted himself further up my chest.

Speaker:

"I was thinking of you,"

Speaker:

the hyena admitted, his ears folding down.

Speaker:

"It'd been a week here, and I was starting to wonder-"

Speaker:

"Wonder what?" I asked,

Speaker:

reaching up to trail my paw down his chest,

Speaker:

lingering as I teased his plump sheath, his pointed tip already poking free.

Speaker:

"Whether you were into me.

Speaker:

Whether I'd just squandered my savings on a dream."

Speaker:

His admission cut through the moment.

Speaker:

"I thought you said my ticket was free?"

Speaker:

"Kinda. I mean, I wasn't going to ask you to

Speaker:

pay-" "How much did you spend?"

Speaker:

I pressed, trying not to raise my voice further.

Speaker:

Even though I didn't know how much he earned, I knew dive guides like him weren't

Speaker:

awash with cash.

Speaker:

"For a dream like this?"

Speaker:

He wiggled his hips. "Enough." The yeen

Speaker:

silenced my protests by shifting his position further still,

Speaker:

until his ass hovered directly above my waiting muzzle.

Speaker:

I couldn't resist -

Speaker:

leaning up to press my snout between his cheeks,

Speaker:

burying myself underneath that gorgeous nub tail.

Speaker:

Heaven, he tasted even better than he smelled.

Speaker:

Despite the darkness and

Speaker:

blooming stars overhead, the light that flickered behind my closed eyes as I indulged in him was greater still.

Speaker:

Zeke's breath trembled as he settled down on me, his weight burying my muzzle against him with a firmness that made my growl long

Speaker:

and loud. I reached up and played with his sheath,

Speaker:

pulling free his knot and

Speaker:

stroking his already slick length as I kept eating him,

Speaker:

wriggling in delight underneath him.

Speaker:

There was little restraint.

Speaker:

My muzzle pressed and stretched his slick ring. My paws squeezed and worked every inch of his knotted cock.

Speaker:

My tongue swirled

Speaker:

deep inside him, and I pressed my muzzle further against him still -

Speaker:

feeling like even my muzzle

Speaker:

now slipped inside him.

Speaker:

When Zeke came, he quivered like a spring blossom on a resurgent wintry breeze.

Speaker:

I felt his every clench, and milked him for every drop I could,

Speaker:

wishing that he would last just one moment longer...

Speaker:

With a breathless gasp,

Speaker:

Zeke rolled over onto his back, lying flat on the deck as we

Speaker:

both looked up at the stars.

Speaker:

The silence between us was perfect, but soon enough one of us had to speak.

Speaker:

"I'll pay you back,"

Speaker:

I said, stroking his fur.

Speaker:

"I would have come anyway.

Speaker:

anyway." "Thanks, but you don't have to,"

Speaker:

Zeke sniffed, rubbing his eyes.

Speaker:

"I don't want to spoil this...

Speaker:

but it was a silly idea.

Speaker:

I knew back then you'd have to go back."

Speaker:

"But I don't want to go back,"

Speaker:

I replied. I actually felt tears well up against my eyelids,

Speaker:

but for his sake I didn't

Speaker:

let me get further.

Speaker:

I didn't want to spoil this moment, and I didn't want it to go back.

Speaker:

So I took a leap. "I'm not going back."

Speaker:

I reached out and squeezed his paw,

Speaker:

rolling on top of him and leaning in for another kiss.

Speaker:

"I let the world crush my dreams once.

Speaker:

I'm not going to let it do so again."

Speaker:

Zeke kissed me back

Speaker:

with wordless fervour. "So...

Speaker:

are you going to help me explore this blue hole?"

Speaker:

I grinned, the image of his smiling face imprinted behind my eyes as my paw teased his rump.

Speaker:

The sight was there when I closed my eyes,

Speaker:

drifting off to sleep

Speaker:

in each other's arms.
