Speaker:

Part 1 of 2 The arctic fox carefully slipped his phone into his letterman jacket.

Speaker:

He took a deep breath,

Speaker:

then looked out the athletic club's front doors for a moment,

Speaker:

pondering whether he could make the trip home.

Speaker:

Ever since his older brother had taken the car they'd shared off to college,

Speaker:

Sirrus had mostly relied on his bike to get to and from school and the athletic club he worked at most evenings.

Speaker:

When the weather was bad, however,

Speaker:

he was at the mercy of his mother.

Speaker:

He didn't hold the need for her to work against her – he knew how much they needed her to take extra hours whenever she could.

Speaker:

But as he glared at the cascade of drifting white snowflakes – the first major snowstorm of the year –

Speaker:

he still felt angry.

Speaker:

His first free Friday night in weeks and he was likely going to be stuck here

Speaker:

for hours. His waterproof winter fur had mostly come in,

Speaker:

which meant he could handle the bitter cold better than most.

Speaker:

That wouldn't do much to aid with things like tire traction or

Speaker:

oncoming cars not being able to see him, however.

Speaker:

Girls were always telling him how handsome his white fur made him look, but it had its downsides.

Speaker:

Sighing, he slipped his paws into his pockets,

Speaker:

then walked back through the inner doors.

Speaker:

Trisha, his best friend, was shutting down the reception computer system

Speaker:

and making sure the desk was clear of any clutter – her usual end-of-night routine.

Speaker:

“Hey, Sirrus," she said

Speaker:

in the kind of cheery voice that only a dog could muster on such a dreary day.

Speaker:

Something about her golden fur made her look like she always had a faint glow,

Speaker:

even when it was cold and dark outside.

Speaker:

It was no wonder she was so popular.

Speaker:

“I've been meaning to say happy birthday all day, but I never got a chance.

Speaker:

chance." “Thanks," he said in a tone that he hoped sounded casual.

Speaker:

“You know how I love to

Speaker:

party." His eighteenth birthday had actually been a few days earlier,

Speaker:

but this had been his first day at work since then.

Speaker:

He and his friend group, including Trish, had plans to get together the next night for a more typical celebration.

Speaker:

Otherwise, he was content to keep things low-key.

Speaker:

So, naturally, his coworkers had ambushed him

Speaker:

with a half-baked “surprise" party

Speaker:

during his dinner break.

Speaker:

The fox appreciated the thought, but he was never comfortable being the center of attention.

Speaker:

He could handle basketball because he could talk himself into believing that the crowd was paying attention to the teams

Speaker:

rather than him directly.

Speaker:

It helped that he played a position that was more about setting others up for success than taking fancy shots on his own.

Speaker:

Waiting for a group of people you didn't know well to bungle their way through an off-key rendition of “Happy Birthday"

Speaker:

was a little harder for him to process.

Speaker:

As a result he'd felt mortified

Speaker:

for most of the day.

Speaker:

Trish, at least, had kept the others from getting one of those sugar-drowned sheet cakes from the grocery store,

Speaker:

and had instead brought a home baked strawberry chiffon cake she'd made

Speaker:

using a recipe she found online.

Speaker:

The strawberry and cream topping had almost made the whole experience worth it.

Speaker:

“You heading home now?" The

Speaker:

lab asked, her tail wagging.

Speaker:

He shook his head.

Speaker:

“Nah, Mom's running late again.

Speaker:

Probably going to be a few hours.

Speaker:

Don't s'pose I could get a ride with you?"

Speaker:

Her tail picked up speed but after a few seconds, her smile faltered and her tail dipped.

Speaker:

“Sorry, Sirrus. Sam's picking me up.

Speaker:

He wanted to take me to a movie after work.

Speaker:

work." “Oh." He forced his voice to sound upbeat and even managed a few flicks with his tail.

Speaker:

“That sounds like fun."

Speaker:

Sam was the power forward

Speaker:

on Sirrus' team.

Speaker:

The two of them weren't very close, but they were on good terms because Sam was dating Trish and Sirrus had been friends with her for

Speaker:

as long as he could remember.

Speaker:

However, the more serious their relationship became,

Speaker:

the less Trish felt comfortable

Speaker:

spending time with

Speaker:

Sirrus. Sam wasn't exactly the jealous type, but there were already rumors.

Speaker:

He wouldn't blame the guy if he got the wrong idea about their relationship,

Speaker:

and he guessed Trish was into him enough to actively avoid sending the wrong message. Despite Sirrus' effort to be cheery, the golden lab picked up on his disappointment

Speaker:

and had visibly deflated from her usual bubbly demeanor.

Speaker:

However, as an idea occurred to her,

Speaker:

her tail perked. “I think Cole's closing up tonight.

Speaker:

He can probably get you home."

Speaker:

Sirrus fought back a frown at that suggestion.

Speaker:

Cole was an OK enough guy to work with, but he was a bit of an ass.

Speaker:

The guy was currently attending community college, but during Sirrus' freshman year, Cole,

Speaker:

then a senior, had developed a reputation for getting into fights.

Speaker:

In fact, the wolf had been forced to finish his final year at summer school

Speaker:

following a prolonged suspension.

Speaker:

Apparently, he'd gotten into a fight with some coyote,

Speaker:

and the latter had lost some teeth.

Speaker:

These days, the black-furred wolf had mellowed out as far as the physicality went,

Speaker:

but he still had a tendency to stir up trouble with smartass comments

Speaker:

and an irritable personality.

Speaker:

In small doses, he was easy to get along with,

Speaker:

and actually funny –

Speaker:

especially when they'd had lifeguard duty together. That said,

Speaker:

the wolf mostly kept to himself.

Speaker:

Sirrus had just interpreted that as him thinking he was too cool to hang out with the rest of the evening staff.

Speaker:

They were mostly high school kids, afterall.

Speaker:

“Well, it's better than sitting here all night. I'll talk to him,"

Speaker:

He said after considering Trisha's suggestion for a moment.

Speaker:

“You know where he is?" “Not really.

Speaker:

He was closing things up last I saw.

Speaker:

Maybe try the weight room?

Speaker:

I think he likes to work out after everyone else is gone.

Speaker:

I could try paging him if you want."

Speaker:

The club was a bit creepy with all the lights out,

Speaker:

particularly on stormy nights,

Speaker:

so Sirrus almost took the dog up on her offer.

Speaker:

That was when a car pulled up to the front doors.

Speaker:

The bright headlights illuminated twin columns of snow swirling down in thick flakes.

Speaker:

The driver beeped his horn twice

Speaker:

and Trisha looked anxiously towards the door,

Speaker:

tail swinging back and forth again.

Speaker:

Sirrus grinned. “Don't worry about it.

Speaker:

Sounds like Sam's in a hurry."

Speaker:

Trisha seemed like she was going to push the matter, but she seemed to give up after a few seconds of thought.

Speaker:

Instead, she gave the fox a quick hug on her way out,

Speaker:

then rushed out into the storm.

Speaker:

It was only after she had left that Sirrus let himself sigh

Speaker:

audibly. He was tired.

Speaker:

It had been a long day at school,

Speaker:

practice had been brutal,

Speaker:

and then he'd spent another three hours acting as a referee for the local kids' basketball league.

Speaker:

All he wanted to do was go home,

Speaker:

crawl into bed, and then sleep

Speaker:

for as long as he could manage.

Speaker:

It took him about ten minutes to find Cole.

Speaker:

The weight and cardio areas were dark,

Speaker:

smelling strongly of cleaning products and deodorizers.

Speaker:

Sirrus himself had closed the basketball and racquetball courts.

Speaker:

That left the pool area.

Speaker:

When he stepped into the locker room,

Speaker:

it quickly became clear where Cole was. Like a lot of older gyms, each of the club's locker rooms

Speaker:

included a sauna

Speaker:

that was intended to help with muscle soreness and certain other issues.

Speaker:

In truth, the rooms always seemed kind of gross to Sirrus.

Speaker:

He avoided them as much as possible,

Speaker:

and was glad Cole was usually assigned to handle cleaning them at the end of the day.

Speaker:

Besides security lighting, as he crossed the locker room the only other illumination

Speaker:

came from above a single section of lockers and the frosted glass door that opened to the sauna.

Speaker:

Although he couldn't see any distinct forms, he did see a blurred figure moving at one side of the steam room,

Speaker:

and Sirrus quickly

Speaker:

put two and two together.

Speaker:

He stepped towards the brightly lit door,

Speaker:

unconsciously adjusting his backpack.

Speaker:

Not wanting to startle the wolf,

Speaker:

the fox knocked a couple of times.

Speaker:

“Hey, Cole? Is that you?"

Speaker:

Through the frosted glass, Sirrus saw a few quick movements before the wolf's answer came.

Speaker:

“Yeah, Sirrus. Come in if you want."

Speaker:

As he opened the door,

Speaker:

the fox was greeted with a wave of hot, humid air that

Speaker:

caused small droplets of condensation to form on his waterproof fur.

Speaker:

It wasn't exactly an unwelcome sensation, but it was an intense one. Cole,

Speaker:

the black-furred wolf, was seated

Speaker:

on one of the tiered wooden benches that lined the room.

Speaker:

He was nude except for a towel haphazardly draped across his lap,

Speaker:

and two more laid out on the bench behind him

Speaker:

in a way that made it clear he had been laying down when Sirrus had knocked.

Speaker:

As the door closed behind him, he reflexively rubbed his nose.

Speaker:

While not entirely unpleasant, the scents here were strong.

Speaker:

Cole's was almost overwhelming.

Speaker:

That wasn't surprising considering how hot it was in here – the

Speaker:

wolf was clearly sweating, and even as he regarded Sirrus, his muzzle was parted, and a couple inches of pink tongue were

Speaker:

protruding from between his fangs.

Speaker:

Cole didn't play basketball anymore, but Sirrus knew

Speaker:

he still worked out like he had in high school. With his fur slicked down from the moisture in the air,

Speaker:

it was easier to see the definition of the lean musculature in his arms and chest.

Speaker:

The wolf tilted his head after a few seconds of silence,

Speaker:

“Everything alright?" “Y

Speaker:

-yeah," Sirrus managed, only then realizing he'd been staring.

Speaker:

He shifted a bit,

Speaker:

again adjusting his backpack.

Speaker:

“I was just wondering if you could give me a ride when you're finished with everything.

Speaker:

The storm's gotten pretty bad."

Speaker:

Cole considered. “You live up around

Speaker:

Sheridan, right?"

Speaker:

Sirrus nodded. The wolf rubbed the back of his

Speaker:

neck. “It's not really on my way,"

Speaker:

he paused, then shrugged.

Speaker:

“But fuck it, sure.

Speaker:

Can't have you getting stranded out there."

Speaker:

The wolf adjusted his towel, tucking it tighter around his waist,

Speaker:

clearly preparing to leave.

Speaker:

“There's no hurry,"

Speaker:

Sirrus blurted out, his voice cracking on the first syllable.

Speaker:

Cole seemed surprised

Speaker:

by Sirrus' suggestion,

Speaker:

and a spark of curiosity appeared in the wolf's eyes.

Speaker:

“I mean, if you're

Speaker:

not done here, you can finish up."

Speaker:

That gaze was fixed on Sirrus for several seconds before the wolf relaxed.

Speaker:

Gradually, he shifted back to a seated position,

Speaker:

then rested his elbows on the elevated bench behind him.

Speaker:

“I haven't been in here very long, so it would be nice to enjoy the heat a little longer."

Speaker:

Sirrus gave an affirmative nod of his head, shifting once more before looking back to the door.

Speaker:

“Sure. I can get an early start on my homework,

Speaker:

I guess." There was a pause,

Speaker:

which Sirrus took as agreement.

Speaker:

As he put his paw on the door, however, the wolf spoke again.

Speaker:

“Despite what you may have heard, I don't bite unless someone has it coming.

Speaker:

There's plenty of clean towels if you feel like hanging out in here.

Speaker:

here." Cole gestured vaguely in the direction of the pool entry.

Speaker:

Each locker room had a collection of freshly laundered towels for member use. Sirrus helped with the laundry from time to time,

Speaker:

so he knew how meticulous the staff was

Speaker:

about ensuring they were kept clean. The fox

Speaker:

tried to play it cool, but he was thankful for the invitation. He didn't

Speaker:

want to be alone up in the main hallway.

Speaker:

“Oh. Yeah, sure." As Sirrus returned to the locker room to undress and stash his stuff,

Speaker:

he was tempted to keep his boxers on.

Speaker:

He soon dismissed the idea, however.

Speaker:

He'd spent plenty of time in the showers and locker rooms with his teammates without issue.

Speaker:

He doubted things would be any different.
