Please enjoy:“The Pack”
Please enjoy:by Kandrel “Ed?!” Everyone’s eyes were on me.
Please enjoy:You couldn’t get to our secret place without being heard,
Please enjoy:so I knew that the Pack would have heard my approach.
Please enjoy:Stu was turned around in his seat with a giddy smile so wide that
Please enjoy:I could see how far back his braces went.
Please enjoy:James’ body was still turned away from me on the stump he used as a chair,
Please enjoy:but his head was turned around
Please enjoy:and I could see a twinkling smile.
Please enjoy:Bess wasn’t smiling, though.
Please enjoy:Her lips were pursed,
Please enjoy:and I saw the same fire in her eyes
Please enjoy:as when I’d left, all those months ago.
Please enjoy:I wrapped my arms around Stu
Please enjoy:when he leaped at me
Please enjoy:and hugged him, followed by James’ much more stoic punch to the shoulder.
Please enjoy:“When’d you get back?
Please enjoy:I thought you were gone forever!”
Please enjoy:Stu exclaimed, his high-pitched voice growing in pitch along with his excitement that I’d returned.
Please enjoy:He laid his head on my shoulder,
Please enjoy:becoming a burden as I ducked my way into our little hidey-hole.
Please enjoy:Some years past,
Please enjoy:lightning had struck a tree in our woods,
Please enjoy:out past the little creek
Please enjoy:where the beavers made their dam.
Please enjoy:It’d been a massive tree, and its falling had actually made local news. In the now hollowed-out rim of its old trunk was our secret place.
Please enjoy:It was wide enough for the four of us to hold our little court,
Please enjoy:with two plastic chairs,
Please enjoy:a bit of the remaining stump that James claimed as his,
Please enjoy:and a clean hollow of ground where Bess liked to sit.
Please enjoy:I guess it wasn’t completely a secret.
Please enjoy:My parents—my dad
Please enjoy:—knew where it was, as presumably the rest of the Pack’s parents did as well.
Please enjoy:However, there was an unspoken agreement among all parties involved,
Please enjoy:as long as we mostly stayed there,
Please enjoy:our parents mostly wouldn’t come out and act like they knew where we were unless it was an emergency.
Please enjoy:That was secret enough for us.
Please enjoy:Much as Bess was frowning at me, though, they hadn’t moved my chair. I tipped
Please enjoy:it out to let all of last night’s dew run out so my butt wouldn’t get wet.
Please enjoy:I sat, dislodging Stu back to his own chair.
Please enjoy:“Mom dropped me off last night.
Please enjoy:I’m back for the summer, at least.”
Please enjoy:Unspoken was that I might need to leave again.
Please enjoy:Dad said it was for the courts to decide.
Please enjoy:I saw the hurt in his face,
Please enjoy:so I didn’t ask any more.
Please enjoy:“Huh.” Bess said. The wild curls of her hair swayed as she looked away.
Please enjoy:Stu had started chattering again, telling us all about
Please enjoy:a frog he found down near the river that we had to go look for again because it was huge.
Please enjoy:James was zoned out like he normally was.
Please enjoy:My eyes were on Bess.
Please enjoy:Was she still angry?
Please enjoy:Some things had been said before I left that I really regretted,
Please enjoy:but I didn’t know how to say I was sorry, especially with Stu
Please enjoy:still yapping next to me.
Please enjoy:“Bess?” I asked. “I guess you want a welcome back, then?”
Please enjoy:She scowled at me.
Please enjoy:“It’d be nice.” I scowled back.
Please enjoy:I stared at her, and she stared back.
Please enjoy:She had piercing blue eyes that were disquietingly steady,
Please enjoy:but I wasn’t going to let her win.
Please enjoy:And that’s how it’d started, ten months back, wasn’t it?
Please enjoy:She hadn’t taken the news that I was moving away well.
Please enjoy:As if it was my choice.
Please enjoy:Mom was taking me with her,
Please enjoy:and I was going whether I wanted to or not.
Please enjoy:Bess had started to cry,
Please enjoy:but when I tried to tell her I’d be back, she hit me.
Please enjoy:It wasn’t a real punch
Please enjoy:—not like I’d seen some of the boys in school hit each other with, but it’d hurt.
Please enjoy:So I told her that I was glad I was going,
Please enjoy:if she was going to be like
Please enjoy:that. I’d stared at her,
Please enjoy:waiting for her to apologize.
Please enjoy:And she’d glared at me between tears,
Please enjoy:waiting for me to say I didn’t mean it.
Please enjoy:I didn’t, of course,
Please enjoy:and she was sorry, but because neither of us would back down, everything went unsaid.
Please enjoy:And unsaid is unfelt,
Please enjoy:and unfelt festers.
Please enjoy:So she said I was out of the pack if I left.
Please enjoy:And then I left. So now she stared at me,
Please enjoy:and I stared back,
Please enjoy:neither of us willing to back down.
Please enjoy:To my left, James spoke up.
Please enjoy:He didn’t talk much, so we all tended to listen when he said something.
Please enjoy:“Good. We needed another person for a War.
Please enjoy:Two on one sucks.”
Please enjoy:Without breaking her gaze, Bess finally smiled.
Please enjoy:“Okay, you get your ‘Welcome back’ if you earn it!”
Please enjoy:Then her gaze dropped,
Please enjoy:ceding me the win for this afternoon.
Please enjoy:She fished a quarter out of one of her jeans pockets
Please enjoy:and flipped it. While in the air, Stu called it.
Please enjoy:“Tails!” She caught
Please enjoy:and flipped it. Heads it was.
Please enjoy:That meant it was Stu and me, and we were on the defense tonight.
Please enjoy:With an excited squeal
Please enjoy:and claiming ‘The cannon’,
Please enjoy:Stu dashed out of our secret spot first,
Please enjoy:followed sedately by James. Which left
Please enjoy:Bess and me alone.
Please enjoy:“I…” I started. “No, I…”
Please enjoy:She stumbled, then looked away.
Please enjoy:I reached out, and she caught my hand in hers.
Please enjoy:Cream skin against her chocolate.
Please enjoy:A smile spread across her face,
Please enjoy:and her teeth stood out bright against her dark skin.
Please enjoy:“I’m sorry I hit you.”
Please enjoy:“I didn’t mean it.
Please enjoy:School sucked without you.
Please enjoy:And them.” I nodded out the sun-filled gap in the hollow tree trunk.
Please enjoy:“Yeah.” Bess stood and pulled me to my feet with her.
Please enjoy:“I had Mrs. Jenkins this year. It was horrible.”
Please enjoy:“Cat lady?” I asked.
Please enjoy:We stepped out into the forest undergrowth.
Please enjoy:Bess scowled again
Please enjoy:and nodded. James pushed a Nerf pistol into her hands,
Please enjoy:while Stu handed me the old beat-up rifle
Please enjoy:that only had three foam bolts.
Please enjoy:“The Sand Pit is yours!”
Please enjoy:Bess pronounced, then threw me the flag.
Please enjoy:It was an old t-shirt with a picture of a unicorn on it.
Please enjoy:It’d been Stu’s, but he’d outgrown it years ago.
Please enjoy:It was his favorite, though,
Please enjoy:so his mom had sown it into a miniature blanket,
Please enjoy:and that blanket had become our flag.
Please enjoy:I grabbed it, raised it over my head, and shouted.
Please enjoy:“The Pit won’t fall this day!”
Please enjoy:“One, two…” James started counting, and Stu and I were off. -
Please enjoy:Six in the evening
Please enjoy:and my phone was buzzing.
Please enjoy:The Pit had been defended, then lost.
Please enjoy:Then Stu had wanted to attack the tree fort,
Please enjoy:so we decamped and moved back to the deep forest, followed by a raid on the old Station
Please enjoy:—a disused electric substation with all of its wiring stripped.
Please enjoy:I don’t think Dad knew that we played there.
Please enjoy:He’d probably stop us if he’d known, so it was important that he didn’t find out.
Please enjoy:The buzzing phone was a reminder that it was going to be getting dark soon
Please enjoy:that Dad had set. When it started buzzing,
Please enjoy:that meant I had only an hour left before I had to be home.
Please enjoy:“Buzz! We going back to the Pack?”
Please enjoy:I asked. Another nerf dart sailed over my head,
Please enjoy:but when the truce of Almost Dinner Time had been called, the rest of hostilities ceased.
Please enjoy:James chased after his spent ammunition.
Please enjoy:The game was over.
Please enjoy:“We are. You’re not.” This time, Bess looked serious.
Please enjoy:“But I—” I started. She shook her head.
Please enjoy:“Not part of the pack anymore, remember?”
Please enjoy:“I said I didn’t mean it.”
Please enjoy:“Yeah.” She ducked her head,
Please enjoy:but didn’t apologize.
Please enjoy:Stu climbed down from where he’d been crouching on top of a fence,
Please enjoy:and James followed after.
Please enjoy:They watched her,
Please enjoy:and me. They were taking her lead.
Please enjoy:“Tomorrow, okay?” Dejected,
Please enjoy:I nodded. She was right.
Please enjoy:I wasn’t part of it anymore.
Please enjoy:I’d left. And in a few months, I might have to leave again.
Please enjoy:Stu gave me a hug goodnight, which I returned,
Please enjoy:then the three of them disappeared into the forest.
Please enjoy:I knew where they’d be,
Please enjoy:but I had to play be the rules.
Please enjoy:If they meant anything, then rules had to be followed, and right now, the secret place was a secret to me, too.
Please enjoy:“Everything okay, Beans?”
Please enjoy:Dad asked. That was his name for me.
Please enjoy:When he’d first tried to teach me how to throw a softball, my very first throw had hit him in the crotch.
Please enjoy:Mom was watching,
Please enjoy:so instead of saying something really rude,
Please enjoy:he just said I hit him right in the beans.
Please enjoy:Mom had laughed, and the name had stuck. I nodded
Please enjoy:into my Franks ‘n Cheese.
Please enjoy:It was one of his favorite to cook, maybe because it was easy and everything he needed came in pre-packed boxes and cans.
Please enjoy:I think he could tell something was wrong,
Please enjoy:but he let it go.
Please enjoy:I asked dad if he’d read me one of my stories,
Please enjoy:so he did. It was about a cat who went fishing on the moon.
Please enjoy:It didn’t have any dogs. Nothing dog-related was allowed in the house
Please enjoy:—not since It had happened.
Please enjoy:Not since we’d become
Please enjoy:the Pack. - I dreamed about the smell
Please enjoy:of water, and the touch of pine needles.
Please enjoy:Something tasted wonderful,
Please enjoy:though it stuck to my mouth.
Please enjoy:I could see, but it was just secondary to what I could smell.
Please enjoy:It’s like the whole world’s history
Please enjoy:was there for me to experience.
Please enjoy:I didn’t see a rabbit, but I knew it’d come through this little patch of forest recently.
Please enjoy:It was a familiar dream. It was a comforting dream.
Please enjoy:It was cold at night,
Please enjoy:but I was warm, and the Pack was there with me.
Please enjoy:I was free. I was alive.
Please enjoy:I was loved. When I woke I felt horrible.
Please enjoy:Everything ached a bit, especially the scar on my cheek.
Please enjoy:I went to the bathroom to look in the mirror,
Please enjoy:but no, it wasn’t bleeding, or crawling under my skin, or even very red. It was just my scar
Please enjoy:—five skinny little lines over my cheek bone.
Please enjoy:I rubbed it with the back of my hand, and by the time I pulled
Please enjoy:my wrist away, it’d stopped hurting.
Please enjoy:Dad did everything he could not to draw attention to my scar.
Please enjoy:Neither did Mom, except when she was being horrible,
Please enjoy:and she told me that no one would ever find me pretty because my cheek was all torn up.
Please enjoy:That hurt—even more than my scar had hurt—but I knew she was wrong.
Please enjoy:All four of us in the Pack had one, since we’d all been
Please enjoy:There when it happened.
Please enjoy:Mine was on my cheek.
Please enjoy:Stu’s was on his wrist.
Please enjoy:James’ was on his calf, because he hadn’t been wearing his jeans that day.
Please enjoy:Bess’ was on the back of her shoulder.
Please enjoy:We showed them off once in a while to each other,
Please enjoy:and I thought hers was the neatest.
Please enjoy:Unlike the other three of us with light skin so the scar just looked mottled and a little darker,
Please enjoy:Bess’ was lighter than her dark skin,
Please enjoy:so looked like a pretzel on the back of her shoulder.
Please enjoy:When I’d said what it looked like,
Please enjoy:she’d hit me. Then Stu had headbutted her. It turned into playing Dinosaurs for a while, before we were all too tired to keep playing
Please enjoy:and I felt bruised.
Please enjoy:I’d told Bess that I didn’t mean it, but she said that pretzels were tasty,
Please enjoy:so she clearly had the best scar.
Please enjoy:I couldn’t disagree.
Please enjoy:By the time I finished breakfast
Please enjoy:(Dad had toasted waffles from a box in the freezer)
Please enjoy:the sun was high in the sky,
Please enjoy:and I had a whole day with the Pack ahead of me.
Please enjoy:Stu and James were already at our secret spot when I arrived,
Please enjoy:and Bess was only a few minutes after.
Please enjoy:We played Monkeys in the old oak,
Please enjoy:with its lower branches
Please enjoy:so worn by our constant climbing that we’d long since stopped getting splinters from it.
Please enjoy:I was the first one to get knocked out of the tree this time,
Please enjoy:so I sat in the gnarled roots while the other three hung from the lowest branch
Please enjoy:and tried to wrap their legs around each other until someone else lost their grip.
Please enjoy:When Bess had been crowned King Monkey,
Please enjoy:she declared that Kings could be girls too, and we all agreed with her, because she was the King Monkey.
Please enjoy:Then James checked his phone,
Please enjoy:and announced that his mom was making Rubens
Please enjoy:(a weird sandwich with too many ingredients to count that, when all put together, was almost as flat as the plate,
Please enjoy:and tasted like toasted heaven
Please enjoy:with cheese and savory sauce.)
Please enjoy:King Bess decreed that she should be carried on our shoulders, because the King doesn’t walk.
Please enjoy:We took turns letting her ride on our backs
Please enjoy:while we took the long way.
Please enjoy:We never took the short way to James’ house.
Please enjoy:That would have taken us past the old trail crossroads near the orchard,
Please enjoy:and that’s where It had happened.
Please enjoy:Even though the scars were neat now,
Please enjoy:none of us really wanted to think back to what’d given them to us.
Please enjoy:So we avoided it, always.
Please enjoy:By this point, it probably looked different than it did in my head.
Please enjoy:I just remember the rocks all lined up in a row,
Please enjoy:with moss growing up their sides but with clean
Please enjoy:and smooth tops. I remember how they felt to sit on,
Please enjoy:warm from the sunlight and so flat they almost felt padded.
Please enjoy:Then I remembered the sun low in the sky,
Please enjoy:and a moon crawling across the tips of the trees,
Please enjoy:dim in the evening light.
Please enjoy:I was supposed to be home,
Please enjoy:but we’d been playing Spacewomen versus Aliens,
Please enjoy:and we’d been too tired to run home—so we were just resting for a few minutes on the stones
Please enjoy:that held the day’s heat so well when—
Please enjoy:Yellow eyes and yellow teeth.
Please enjoy:My mind skated off the memory like water on a hot skillet.
Please enjoy:Lunch was a casual affair in James’ back yard,
Please enjoy:where we had sandwiches that were dripping with sauce.
Please enjoy:I excused myself to use the bathroom,
Please enjoy:and when I returned I heard a conversation through the screen door.
Please enjoy:I didn’t mean to listen in—but when I heard my name in the distance I found the door was stuck
Please enjoy:and I couldn’t open it just yet
Please enjoy:—or so I justified in my head.
Please enjoy:“Come on, we gotta bring her with us.
Please enjoy:It’ll be just like last year, before—”
Please enjoy:Stu was saying. Bess cut in.
Please enjoy:“Before she left the pack.”
Please enjoy:“Only you said that. And anyway, it’s not like she wanted to go.”
Please enjoy:“But she went anyway.”
Please enjoy:Bess was stubborn.
Please enjoy:Always had been.
Please enjoy:I bit my lip, hand still on the handle of the screen door.
Please enjoy:“Doesn’t matter.” James piped up thoughtfully.
Please enjoy:“She’d tell us if she’d changed.
Please enjoy:And she hasn’t. It’s not safe.
Please enjoy:She can’t come with us.”
Please enjoy:Somehow I’d thought James was on my side, but apparently I’d been mistaken.
Please enjoy:I opened the door and shut it hard.
Please enjoy:“I gotta go home.”
Please enjoy:I mumbled. Or, more accurately,
Please enjoy:I didn’t want to stay here.
Please enjoy:Not when it was two-to one against me coming with them.
Please enjoy:Bess’ eyes narrowed, but she didn’t stop me as I gathered my phone from the swing where I’d been eating lunch.
Please enjoy:Stu complained, but I ignored him on my way out.
Please enjoy:I felt hot and angry.
Please enjoy:My scar was twitching under my cheek.
Please enjoy:“Catch us this afternoon?”
Please enjoy:James asked. “Probably not. You got
Please enjoy:secret Pack things to do.” I replied sourly,
Please enjoy:then ran home. I was out of breath by the time I arrived.
Please enjoy:I let the door slam behind me and trotted up to my room.
Please enjoy:I expected dad to stick his head in any moment, but he didn’t.
Please enjoy:I felt robbed. The only thing that would validate my self-inflicted solitary depression
Please enjoy:is making sure that everyone around me knew how sad I was,
Please enjoy:but it seemed that even that was too much for people to recognize.
Please enjoy:Within five minutes,
Please enjoy:I felt the need to go let Dad know that I was upset but didn’t need his attention.
Please enjoy:I found him in his study,
Please enjoy:with the door closed to all but a crack.
Please enjoy:I was about to push it open, when I heard
Please enjoy:a stifled noise from inside.
Please enjoy:It cut through my justified frump, and instead of interrupting, I put my eye to the crack in the door.
Please enjoy:Dad was at his desk.
Please enjoy:In his hand was a piece of paper
Please enjoy:—tri-folded like a letter.
Please enjoy:He was still holding the envelope.
Please enjoy:I recognized the symbol on it
Please enjoy:—a wierd dangly-thingy that Mom said was a scale
Please enjoy:(though it didn’t look like any scale we’d ever had at home.)
Please enjoy:My mom’s divorce lawyer,
Please enjoy:Mrs. Siebel’s, practice used it as their seal.
Please enjoy:Dad was doing his best not to cry,
Please enjoy:but I could see his face contorting every few seconds.
Please enjoy:He turned to the side and blew his nose into a kleenex.
Please enjoy:I returned to my room,
Please enjoy:now doubly deprived of my validation.
Please enjoy:But the fire of my anger had died.
Please enjoy:I was still upset at Bess,
Please enjoy:but at least we were still friends
Please enjoy:—mostly. Not like Mom and Dad who were…
Please enjoy:Well, not. - It was two years ago, and I was sitting on a rock catching my breath.
Please enjoy:I knew I’d get into a little trouble for being late,
Please enjoy:but Mom and Dad didn’t seem to be paying much attention to me this summer.
Please enjoy:Anyway, the games had been so fun that Bess and Stu were still laughing about that time when James had tried to roar like an alien but lost his hold on the branch
Please enjoy:and fell out of the tree he’d been in
Please enjoy:and let out a squeak instead.
Please enjoy:I was only half-listening.
Please enjoy:There was a whole half of the summer still left,
Please enjoy:and the four of us were inseparable.
Please enjoy:In the warmth of the stones at dusk,
Please enjoy:I closed my eyes and just enjoyed being with my friends.
Please enjoy:Then Stu shouted off to the side.
Please enjoy:“Hey! Come look!
Please enjoy:I think there’s a dog in the house.”
Please enjoy:The stones we sat on were an old wall around the foundations of a house
Please enjoy:that was built back in who-knows-when,
Please enjoy:and was barely more than an empty shell of badly-rotted timbers now.
Please enjoy:I turned around and followed Bess around the side.
Please enjoy:As I passed, I heard the scrabble of claws on the wood from the other side.
Please enjoy:When we made it to Stu, we could only barely see into the house.
Please enjoy:The last of the dusk sunlight was shining through the doorway at a strange angle,
Please enjoy:so we only saw the occasional flash of a gray tail,
Please enjoy:and the reflection of eyes in the dark
Please enjoy:when it glanced our way.
Please enjoy:Bess tugged at the remains of the double-door,
Please enjoy:trying to open the other side of the door that still remained.
Please enjoy:I heard a whine from inside, and saw another flash of fur.
Please enjoy:The dog was big. Really big.
Please enjoy:In the flash of sunlight on fur, I caught a smart,
Please enjoy:sharp muzzle and alert ears,
Please enjoy:though they were pinned back along its
Please enjoy:head. It jumped against the wall again,
Please enjoy:and I heard the creak of timbers from its weight.
Please enjoy:Bess managed to tear the door free of its rusted hinges,
Please enjoy:and instead of swinging open
Please enjoy:it just fell into the house, letting in more sunlight.
Please enjoy:Now fully illuminated,
Please enjoy:we could see the dog.
Please enjoy:I’d never had pets, so I didn’t recognize the signs.
Please enjoy:Head low, eyes wide and pupils dilated so far I couldn’t tell what color its irises were.
Please enjoy:Tail between legs,
Please enjoy:and hinds gathered to jump.
Please enjoy:I know now that it was terrified of us, even though it was bigger than any two of us put together.
Please enjoy:“Aww, he looks lost.” I said.
Please enjoy:Stu peered in. He wasn’t particularly observant,
Please enjoy:even with his glasses, but this time his common sense pulled through. “Uh,
Please enjoy:I don’t know. I don’t see a collar.
Please enjoy:Maybe he’s a stray?”
Please enjoy:We all knew that stray dogs existed,
Please enjoy:though we’d never seen one before.
Please enjoy:I heard a growl—so full of bass that it reverberated through the ruins of the house
Please enjoy:that it made my heart flutter in my chest.
Please enjoy:For various reasons,
Please enjoy:none of the four of us had ever had a dog,
Please enjoy:and our second-hand knowledge of them were clearly lacking.
Please enjoy:None of us knew well enough to be afraid.
Please enjoy:So we all just stood there
Please enjoy:when Bess stepped into the house
Please enjoy:and said, “Dogs shouldn’t growl at people.”
Please enjoy:The dog growled again,
Please enjoy:and I could see drool dangling from its lips.
Please enjoy:The ears flattened out to the sides,
Please enjoy:and the lips peeled back to show teeth.
Please enjoy:Fearless, Bess pointed down and shouted,
Please enjoy:“Sit.” Yellow eyes and yellow teeth. -
Please enjoy:I woke in the morning and my scar was hurting again.
Please enjoy:This time it didn’t go away when I rubbed it.
Please enjoy:When I brought it up to Dad at our rushed breakfast, he shrugged.
Please enjoy:“The doctor said you’d feel it for years.
Please enjoy:I know it doesn’t feel nice, but I think that’s normal.
Please enjoy:If it keeps hurting, or if it goes some different color,
Please enjoy:let me know and we’ll call him, okay?”
Please enjoy:I nodded and finished my egg and toast.
Please enjoy:I hadn’t dreamed of
Please enjoy:It for a long time. Maybe being back home—and being angry
Please enjoy:—had brought it on.
Please enjoy:It was so strange.
Please enjoy:I’d read fairy tales and seen picture books, like the Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood, but all the pictures had lied.
Please enjoy:They’d been all cartoons with
Please enjoy:massive teeth and slavering jaws, made to look more monstrous than recognizable.
Please enjoy:None of them had prepared me for the fact that a wolf, especially a scared and cornered one,
Please enjoy:would look just like a dog.
Please enjoy:We were lucky, we’d been told.
Please enjoy:It’d just hurt us, a nip here and a claw there—just enough to get out of the house so it could run away.
Please enjoy:It had been our fault, sort of.
Please enjoy:But we’d never been prepared for a wolf, because as far as Mom and Dad knew they’d
Please enjoy:never been seen in this area before.
Please enjoy:But there it had been,
Please enjoy:and there we were,
Please enjoy:and it’d held our lives in its hands. Paws.
Please enjoy:Well, its jaws, more accurately,
Please enjoy:because of all those teeth.
Please enjoy:Here I was two years later, and Dad still was afraid to talk about dogs,
Please enjoy:as if just the general topic was so scary that I’d flash back to that day and be scared.
Please enjoy:Then again, I had just dreamed about it.
Please enjoy:I felt the same cold rush of fear when I realized—too late
Please enjoy:—that all of us were in terrible peril.
Please enjoy:It had jumped directly over Bess.
Please enjoy:She cowered, and it landed on her back,
Please enjoy:clawing her shoulder as it leaped again.
Please enjoy:It caught my face in a bite,
Please enjoy:and then Stu’s arm where it was held up in front of his face.
Please enjoy:He’d had the breath knocked out of him, too,
Please enjoy:when the wolf landed on him.
Please enjoy:James had tried to save him,
Please enjoy:but the wolf caught him a
Please enjoy:bite on the leg before it was able to flee to safety.
Please enjoy:The Pack wasn’t at our secret spot,
Please enjoy:but when I got there
Please enjoy:I heard Stu’s squeal from the sand pit not far off.
Please enjoy:When I sneaked closer, I caught them playing with the Nerf guns again,
Please enjoy:this time the two boys against Bess.
Please enjoy:A quick trip back to the secret spot
Please enjoy:and I freed the fourth gun from its hook.
Please enjoy:My ambush was flawless.
Please enjoy:Stu went down with a scream, and James clasped
Please enjoy:dramatically at his chest where I hit him.
Please enjoy:Bess vaulted over her fort wall
Please enjoy:and let out a battle cry as she joined me, emptying her nerf gun’s entire clip into the fallen bodies of Stu
Please enjoy:and James. The former complained when one of her foam darts hit his glasses.
Please enjoy:“Not in the face!” “Sorry.”
Please enjoy:Bess apologized. Bess and I claimed victory defending the sand pit,
Please enjoy:which meant it was the boy’s turn now.
Please enjoy:Without me in reserve to ambush, though,
Please enjoy:the boys held their defense this time.
Please enjoy:The afternoon disappeared in a blink.
Please enjoy:I know that we played more games, but I couldn’t tell you now what we did.
Please enjoy:Hanging over it all was the decision I’d made to go with them
Please enjoy:—to get them to accept me back into the Pack.
Please enjoy:Soon enough, the sun had dipped behind the pines. It wasn’t dark, but the afternoon was certainly on its way out.
Please enjoy:The butterflies in my stomach had started to buzz as time wound on,
Please enjoy:and by this point they were holding a sleepover with a colony of moths and a few bumble bees for good measure.
Please enjoy:“You look like you swallowed a frog.”
Please enjoy:Bess commented. “I want to come with you guys.” I blurted out.
Please enjoy:I’d meant to be so much more mature about it, but when I opened my mouth, that’s all that came out.
Please enjoy:“You can’t. Pack only.” Bess shrugged,
Please enjoy:like it wasn’t her choice.
Please enjoy:By this point, Stu had put the guns away, and James was observing silently from his seat.
Please enjoy:“But I didn’t want to leave.
Please enjoy:You know I didn’t want to.”
Please enjoy:“But you did.” She said it so matter-of-fact. She was also right.
Please enjoy:“I didn’t want to. That has to count for something!
Please enjoy:Come on, don’t blame me for my
Please enjoy:parents being… Horrible.”
Please enjoy:James opined, and even Bess shut up to let him speak. “When
Please enjoy:my parents split it was really rough.”
Please enjoy:He nodded. “See?” I said.
Please enjoy:“James knows how it is.
Please enjoy:He says I can come with—” “Didn’t.”
Please enjoy:James interjected.
Please enjoy:“Can’t. Sorry Ed.” I felt a flash of that anger from yesterday,
Please enjoy:yellow hot and simmering. My scar hurt again.
Please enjoy:“Why are you both being like this?” “Whoah.”
Please enjoy:Stu said from behind me.
Please enjoy:I felt hands on my shoulders.
Please enjoy:“It’s okay. It’s nothing big, Ed. We’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
Please enjoy:“No!” I shouted. “It’s not okay.
Please enjoy:I don’t care if it’s something small.
Please enjoy:My family is breaking up, and now you guys…
Please enjoy:My Pack is… I just… Rrrrrgh!”
Please enjoy:The last came out as an incoherent cry.
Please enjoy:Everyone was silent around me.
Please enjoy:They were all staring at me, as if I was some weird monster.
Please enjoy:Then James’ face broke into a
Please enjoy:grin. What? Why?! Why was he smiling at me, when I was baring my heart to them? Couldn’t they just
Please enjoy:take it seriously for a moment?
Please enjoy:“What are you going to do if I tell you that you can’t come with us?” Bess asked.
Please enjoy:“Cry?” I had the irresistable urge to growl at her.
Please enjoy:Stu came around us to the side, and his hands were over his mouth.
Please enjoy:His eyes were wide,
Please enjoy:and I could tell that he was smiling, too.
Please enjoy:“You… You assholes!”
Please enjoy:I let the swear float in the air.
Please enjoy:“I’m not going to cry! You’re all acting like this is a joke.
Please enjoy:I’m… I’m…” “Oh, not cry? So what do you want to do? Hit me?”
Please enjoy:Bess taunted. I did.
Please enjoy:I really wanted to punch her.
Please enjoy:So I nodded. “So do it.
Please enjoy:Hit me. Come on, wimp.
Please enjoy:You want to be in the Pack?
Please enjoy:Fight me for it. Asshole.”
Please enjoy:She smiled into my tears.
Please enjoy:Okay, so maybe I was crying.
Please enjoy:And then I hit her.
Please enjoy:A moment later I stared at the hole Bess’ body had punched in the back of our secret place.
Please enjoy:The old rotted tree trunk
Please enjoy:started to disintegrate around the new gap.
Please enjoy:There was a skid in the bushes behind where she’d been knocked through.
Please enjoy:I stared in disbelief,
Please enjoy:then looked down at my fist.
Please enjoy:It wasn’t my first—at least not anymore.
Please enjoy:Gone was my light skin,
Please enjoy:and in its place was fur.
Please enjoy:Dark and golden. Then my first shrunk back to my skinny fingers.
Please enjoy:I felt it on the end of my wrist,
Please enjoy:throbbing like I’d punched a wall.
Please enjoy:Everything was too close in here.
Please enjoy:Stu made way for me as I stumbled outside.
Please enjoy:I tripped and caught myself with a hand to the ground. Paw to the ground.
Please enjoy:It was back to the golden fur again,
Please enjoy:and this time the arm attached to it had the same golden pelt.
Please enjoy:“Wow! Ed, that’s one
Please enjoy:—oh! Come on you two, give her some room!”
Please enjoy:Bess wheezed as she came up behind me.
Please enjoy:At least, I think it was Bess.
Please enjoy:I could hear her voice, but it was strange.
Please enjoy:Then again, I bet my voice would sound strange if I’d been punched through a wall, too.
Please enjoy:I looked down, and the ground rushed away from me.
Please enjoy:I felt the undergrowth
Please enjoy:and nearby tree branches bounce off of my back.
Please enjoy:Then I was ‘me’ again,
Please enjoy:and flailing in the air
Please enjoy:as I fell from eight feet up.
Please enjoy:“Wha? What’s happ—” I gasped, as another contraction of space around me hit,
Please enjoy:and I felt a clench of my stomach as the world spun around me.
Please enjoy:Someone was at my side.
Please enjoy:His hand felt small on my shoulder.
Please enjoy:“It’s okay, Ed. Let it happen. It scared me, too, the first time.”
Please enjoy:I think it was James,
Please enjoy:but his voice was off, too.
Please enjoy:This time I held onto the ground,
Please enjoy:dirt and roots and
Please enjoy:leaves between my fingers as it shot away from me.
Please enjoy:My whole body thrummed in time with my heart,
Please enjoy:and it felt like I was bruised everywhere.
Please enjoy:I felt something around me constricting.
Please enjoy:Then it burst. I saw my shirt—and pants—flutter to the forest floor in shreds.
Please enjoy:I reached out and caught a tree.
Please enjoy:It swayed under my grip.
Please enjoy:I felt… I felt… Amazing.
Please enjoy:That’s what I felt.
Please enjoy:It was like I’d sneezed.
Please enjoy:And yawned. Then I stood, and it was as if I’d stretched first thing in the morning, and all those little muscle aches just fled. I felt alive.
Please enjoy:“Let me through. I want to see her.”
Please enjoy:Bess said, with an undertone of her own growl that made my ears swivel to listen.
Please enjoy:Wait, my ears turned on top of my head? How does that even work?
Please enjoy:I turned and saw her.
Please enjoy:She stood in front of me,
Please enjoy:in all of her lupine glory.
Please enjoy:She was grey-furred, from a light smoke on her belly
Please enjoy:to a coal-in-the-sunlight near-black on her shoulders.
Please enjoy:She was tall—so tall that standing she was taller even than the remains of the tree trunk that had been our secret place.
Please enjoy:I stumbled and she caught me.
Please enjoy:“Whoah, there you go, Ed.
Please enjoy:Are you doing okay?
Please enjoy:That was a punch!
Please enjoy:I’m… I’m proud.” She was still breathing heavily.
Please enjoy:Another pair of arms encircled us, then a second.
Please enjoy:Two more wolves. I didn’t have to guess.
Please enjoy:My nose told me that the auburn-red one was James, and the light-blond one was Stu.
Please enjoy:Arms hugged around us.
Please enjoy:On one wrist, I saw a blank patch in the fur,
Please enjoy:and through it I saw a scar. Stu’s scar.
Please enjoy:Bess pulled away and stroked my face.
Please enjoy:The leathery pad of her thumb brushed tears away from my skin.
Please enjoy:Fur. Then it traced the vertical lines of my scar
Please enjoy:—mine must still be there beneath the layers of my pelt.
Please enjoy:She smiled into my face, then kissed my cheek.
Please enjoy:Her eyes weren’t devoid of tears anymore, either.
Please enjoy:Joined by our scars,
Please enjoy:I knew I’d finally come home.
Please enjoy:“It’s okay. It’s okay.
Please enjoy:We always knew—we were just waiting for you.
Please enjoy:We missed you, Ed.
Please enjoy:Welcome back to your Pack.”
