“The Lion of the Low Countries”

Please enjoy:

by Huskyteer “There you go, Mr Belgicus. One latte and one waffle with cream and Nutella.”

Please enjoy:

Leo thanked the waitress and sipped his coffee,

Please enjoy:

staring out across the cobbled square

Please enjoy:

with its soothing splash of fountains.

Please enjoy:

The morning sunlight shrank his pupils

Please enjoy:

and played on the faded words that spotted his coat.

Please enjoy:

He stretched out an arm,

Please enjoy:

claws extended, and turned it over to feel the warmth on the unlettered inside of his wrist.

Please enjoy:

Even in the rarefied world of heraldry,

Please enjoy:

Leo Belgicus was an

Please enjoy:

oddball. Back in the early days of the Renaissance, some artistic cartographer had noticed that the borders

Please enjoy:

of the then Low Countries

Please enjoy:

formed a shape that somewhat resembled a lion rampant,

Please enjoy:

and a symbol had been born.

Please enjoy:

He was proud of the fine details that mapped his skin,

Please enjoy:

the rivers and villages, but they rewarded close and careful browsing.

Please enjoy:

From afar, he was a mess.

Please enjoy:

While other national creatures in bold, simple shapes

Please enjoy:

were raised aloft on their countries’ flags, he was stuck in a book.

Please enjoy:

Maybe that was why they all seemed to look down on him.

Please enjoy:

He flipped his tablet open and created a new document.

Please enjoy:

LIONS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: KEYNOTE SPEECH,

Please enjoy:

he typed, then, exhausted by this burst of creativity,

Please enjoy:

took a bite of his waffle.

Please enjoy:

Licking cream from his nose,

Please enjoy:

he considered his next line.

Please enjoy:

Relevance, that was the key.

Please enjoy:

He needed to fit in to this modern age, but it wasn’t easy.

Please enjoy:

The zeitgeist rushed along like a Eurostar train.

Please enjoy:

Miss, and you bellyflop onto the tracks, left behind in a cloud of embarrassment.

Please enjoy:

In the Nineties, his PR officer had got Leo to perform a rap on national television.

Please enjoy:

The memory still made his ink run cold,

Please enjoy:

and even eating the PR officer had been a poor consolation.

Please enjoy:

The conference used to be a highlight of his year.

Please enjoy:

Now, he was dreading it.

Please enjoy:

Young tyros like Lev Two-Tails, the silver lion of Czechia, already treated him with open contempt. ‘Paper

Please enjoy:

lion’, Lev had called him at the last one.

Please enjoy:

“You know, like a paper tiger. Because you are maps? Ha!”

Please enjoy:

He switched to his newsfeed and browsed the headlines.

Please enjoy:

Terrorism. Unemployment.

Please enjoy:

Political extremists.

Please enjoy:

Refugees crowding in from places where things were far worse.

Please enjoy:

The general feeling seemed to be

Please enjoy:

that the whole world was unravelling;

Please enjoy:

was it any wonder that nobody had time for Leo?

Please enjoy:

As a national animal,

Please enjoy:

Leo’s purpose was to kindle his people’s pride in their country by reminding them of their history.

Please enjoy:

Once, just stalking regally through the streets had been enough;

Please enjoy:

now he stopped passers-by for conversation,

Please enjoy:

like some religious fanatic or double glazing salesperson.

Please enjoy:

More and more often,

Please enjoy:

he either heard that history was boring and stuffy, or that the past was full of dubious conquests and prejudices of which he should be ashamed.

Please enjoy:

Be strong, he willed the people crossing the square.

Please enjoy:

Be brave. Remember your past.

Please enjoy:

We’ve come through worse than this.

Please enjoy:

A girl holding a teddy bear looked his way, briefly.

Please enjoy:

Nobody else spared him a glance.

Please enjoy:

All wrapped up in their mobile phones as usual.

Please enjoy:

Above them, the flags of the EU and Belgium waved.

Please enjoy:

Stars and stripes.

Please enjoy:

Huh. Leo examined himself in the metal surface of the table.

Please enjoy:

He was a lion! A funny-shaped lion, but instantly recognisable nonetheless.

Please enjoy:

He was noble and fierce!

Please enjoy:

He represented the proud spirit of his people!

Please enjoy:

He should probably cut down on the waffles.

Please enjoy:

Leo had always been on the short and chunky side,

Please enjoy:

his shape dictated by the old national borders,

Please enjoy:

but there was no excuse for the way his tummy bulged out at present.

Please enjoy:

If anything, he should be losing weight,

Please enjoy:

the way his map had changed.

Please enjoy:

Wars and treaties had nicked an ear here, taken a chunk from his tail there,

Please enjoy:

scarred his sides and ripped hanks from his mane.

Please enjoy:

The states and towns that labelled him were blurring as their names faded from public memory.

Please enjoy:

Once, they had stood out brightly,

Please enjoy:

tattoos that rippled with his muscles.

Please enjoy:

Now he looked like some neglected piece of public sculpture,

Please enjoy:

chipped and scribbled on by bored teenagers.

Please enjoy:

Across the square,

Please enjoy:

a tourist pointed her camera.

Please enjoy:

Leo smiled, toothily,

Please enjoy:

and raised his paw in a regal wave.

Please enjoy:

Not everyone recognised him these days,

Please enjoy:

even his own people.

Please enjoy:

Like the ancient placenames on his maps,

Please enjoy:

he was fading from their memory.

Please enjoy:

He wasn’t available on postcards, or as a plastic figurine.

Please enjoy:

On the merchandise front, he’d lost out to a statue of a small boy piddling.

Please enjoy:

He closed the news down and logged in to LION,

Please enjoy:

the Lions International Online Network.

Please enjoy:

Only the venerable lion of the United Kingdom was showing as available, which was fine with Leo;

Please enjoy:

insofar as he had friends,

Please enjoy:

the British Lion was his best one.

Please enjoy:

He sent a private chat request.

Please enjoy:

After a few seconds

Please enjoy:

a video window popped open,

Please enjoy:

showing the familiar grave and golden face.

Please enjoy:

Leo narrowed his eyes respectfully.

Please enjoy:

You didn’t mess with Lyonesse.

Please enjoy:

“Hullo, LB. Looks like a nice morning over there.

Please enjoy:

Filthy in London as usual.

Please enjoy:

How’s the keynote going?”

Please enjoy:

“Morning, Nessie. Actually, I’m a bit worried about it.

Please enjoy:

I’m having a hard time finding something to say that’s relevant, you know?”

Please enjoy:

Like Leo, the British Lion had seen her empire dwindle over the centuries as other nations rose to power.

Please enjoy:

There were certain subjects you didn’t bring up with Lyonesse,

Please enjoy:

like the loss of America, and why she had a mane

Please enjoy:

(sexual dimorphism wasn’t a concept with which artists in the Dark Ages were greatly familiar,

Please enjoy:

and most of them painted with a vague idea that a lion was a large, gold cat in a wig),

Please enjoy:

but her dignity and seniority

Please enjoy:

were such that nobody dared give her a hard time. “Pff.

Please enjoy:

What do you mean, ‘relevant’?

Please enjoy:

‘Edgy’? ‘On trend’?” Lyonesse

Please enjoy:

had never let him forget his foray into rap.

Please enjoy:

He felt his territories flush red.

Please enjoy:

“You’re better than that, Leo.

Please enjoy:

Pay no attention to those…those

Please enjoy:

hipster neckmanes.”

Please enjoy:

“They’re right, though.

Please enjoy:

Nobody reads my blog.

Please enjoy:

I applied to sponsor a brand of chip sauce and got turned down.”

Please enjoy:

He gulped, and made his most damning confession.

Please enjoy:

“It wasn’t even the leading brand.”

Please enjoy:

“Dear me. Tintin and Poirot still ignoring your dinner invitations, too?”

Please enjoy:

The onscreen face of Lyonesse smirked.

Please enjoy:

“I have faith in you, LB.

Please enjoy:

I know your speech is going to put Belgium on the map again.”

Please enjoy:

Leo nodded acknowledgement of the old joke,

Please enjoy:

though his tail, unseen under the table, twitched with annoyance.

Please enjoy:

“I just don’t want to look silly,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “Nonsense!

Please enjoy:

Everyone’s always happy to see you, mapface.

Please enjoy:

Are you bringing some of those caramel biscuity things?” “Stroopwafels,”

Please enjoy:

Leo supplied, sadly.

Please enjoy:

“Well, talk to you soon.”

Please enjoy:

He closed the window.

Please enjoy:

There it was: to his peers, Leo Belgicus, the Lion of the Low Countries, was nothing but a supplier of European treats.

Please enjoy:

A portly, cuddly joke.

Please enjoy:

And to the people of Belgium,

Please enjoy:

a virtual unknown.

Please enjoy:

Nobody cared about the past any more; they just wanted the future.

Please enjoy:

Music and cartoons from the USA and Japan.

Please enjoy:

Yet, at the same time,

Please enjoy:

they were scared and unhappy.

Please enjoy:

The prevailing view, he gathered, was that while they welcomed new things into the country on their own terms,

Please enjoy:

the new people who came here looking for work or safety

Please enjoy:

were less welcome.

Please enjoy:

They would take all the jobs, or refuse jobs and take money from the state

Please enjoy:

(nobody seemed entirely clear on this point)

Please enjoy:

and they would dilute the national identity.

Please enjoy:

But part of your identity is sitting right here!

Please enjoy:

He wanted to jump up on the seat of the artsy

Please enjoy:

steel café chair that was currently making his backside cold and sore,

Please enjoy:

and roar it out. But would any of them hear?

Please enjoy:

Maybe it was time to head home.

Please enjoy:

Work on his stupid speech in peace.

Please enjoy:

Some decades ago, Leo had established himself in the Atomium,

Please enjoy:

the huge metal sculpture built for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels.

Please enjoy:

Already it was hopelessly dated,

Please enjoy:

but that was somehow OK because it was retro.

Please enjoy:

Fashions changed so quickly now.

Please enjoy:

Times past, a castle was good for several centuries

Please enjoy:

if you hung up a new tapestry every so often.

Please enjoy:

There was a tram stop somewhere around here, but to his annoyance

Please enjoy:

he wasn’t quite sure of the direction.

Please enjoy:

He beckoned the waitress.

Please enjoy:

“Seven Euro, please, Mr Belgicus.”

Please enjoy:

She spoke Flemish with a slight accent from somewhere to the east.

Please enjoy:

The stipend Leo had been granted by the state

Please enjoy:

predated both the franc and the liard, rendering it worthless in today’s money,

Please enjoy:

and his image was long out of copyright, so he didn’t receive royalties.

Please enjoy:

It was lucky he’d invested in gold and diamonds,

Please enjoy:

which he converted whenever the rate was favourable.

Please enjoy:

He drew out his wallet,

Please enjoy:

then paused. “You…weren’t born in Belgium, were you?”

Please enjoy:

he asked, trying not to offend.

Please enjoy:

“But you recognised me.

Please enjoy:

How’s that?” “You’re part of the citizenship course!”

Please enjoy:

She smiled. “I’ve forgotten a lot of what I learned, but I remember you.

Please enjoy:

Your face looked so friendly.”

Please enjoy:

He was supposed to look fierce,

Please enjoy:

but Leo found he didn’t mind.

Please enjoy:

He smiled back. Reaching in his wallet again,

Please enjoy:

he picked out a mid-sized diamond.

Please enjoy:

“Thank you,

Please enjoy:

but I can’t accept this.” “I won’t tell your boss.”

Please enjoy:

“It’s not that. I had to study the whole history of Belgium, you know. The bad bits too.

Please enjoy:

I can guess why you have diamonds.”

Please enjoy:

Leo dropped his gaze.

Please enjoy:

“Do you know how to get to Labrador Road?”

Please enjoy:

he asked. She frowned.

Please enjoy:

“Let’s see, you need to head for…er…”

Please enjoy:

“Can you show me on here?”

Please enjoy:

He flexed a bicep so the town plan stood out.

Please enjoy:

That had been a good pickup line, in the past,

Please enjoy:

but the waitress just shook her head.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t recognise any of these places.

Please enjoy:

Don’t you have a maps app?”

Please enjoy:

“A maps app? Why would I need a maps app?”

Please enjoy:

He shrugged indignantly,

Please enjoy:

displaying the towns and geographical features across his chest.

Please enjoy:

“Why are you lost?”

Please enjoy:

The waitress leaned across him

Please enjoy:

and tapped at the screen of his tablet. “There!”

Please enjoy:

With a series of gestures too intricate

Please enjoy:

and precise for lion paws,

Please enjoy:

she brought up a plan of the city

Please enjoy:

and zoomed in on the red blob that marked their location.

Please enjoy:

“There. Head up that street and turn left at McDonald’s…sir?

Please enjoy:

Mr Belgicus?

Please enjoy:

Are you all right?”

Please enjoy:

She waved a hand in front of his nose.

Please enjoy:

The Lion of the Low Countries

Please enjoy:

stared straight ahead,

Please enjoy:

a new light dancing

Please enjoy:

in his parchment-coloured eyes. #

Please enjoy:

Leo tapped triumphantly at a laptop key.

Please enjoy:

On the screen above his head,

Please enjoy:

the familiar portrait of Leo Belgicus appeared:

Please enjoy:

the side view, with one forepaw raised,

Please enjoy:

head high, and a long, red tongue lolling out.

Please enjoy:

When he zoomed in on Liège, near his right elbow,

Please enjoy:

a street plan appeared.

Please enjoy:

A button changed the view, so Leo and his audience could see a reconstruction of the town

Please enjoy:

as it had been in the Renaissance,

Please enjoy:

and a scrollbar moved the map back and forth through the centuries.

Please enjoy:

The team from the software company had spent

Please enjoy:

weeks photographing

Please enjoy:

and scanning Leo from every angle.

Please enjoy:

He’d seen parts of himself he hadn’t known existed,

Please enjoy:

and resolved to groom more thoroughly in future.

Please enjoy:

High resolution imagery was

Please enjoy:

not kind to centuries-old fur or whiskery chins,

Please enjoy:

and the border hamlets between his toes deserved to be presented in their best light.

Please enjoy:

He had helped them with the modelling of each town

Please enjoy:

through the ages, too;

Please enjoy:

after all, he had been there.

Please enjoy:

Now he could revisit and share a past nobody else alive remembered.

Please enjoy:

It was incredible,

Please enjoy:

this skipping about in history.

Please enjoy:

Aware that he had spent rather too long engrossed in a graphical representation of his own bicep,

Please enjoy:

Leo raised his eyes.

Please enjoy:

“Historians can use it,”

Please enjoy:

he said, “and fiction writers.

Please enjoy:

Children in school, too.

Please enjoy:

And the new people coming in, the immigrants, they can learn about their new country.

Please enjoy:

But it’s fun for everyone.

Please enjoy:

Give it a try when you get home!”

Please enjoy:

The URL flashed up on the screen.

Please enjoy:

The audience of national lions

Please enjoy:

made polite noises of appreciation.

Please enjoy:

Someone, probably Lyonesse, began to clap, but when nobody else joined in, the noise faltered and stopped.

Please enjoy:

They were intrigued, though;

Please enjoy:

Leo could tell by the tilted heads

Please enjoy:

and the ears turned towards the podium.

Please enjoy:

It had been fun, working with the programmers,

Please enjoy:

and flattering to hold their attention, even if they were mostly intrigued by the challenges of rendering him in pixels,

Please enjoy:

or whatever they were called.

Please enjoy:

What had really excited Leo, though,

Please enjoy:

was the sensation of being a symbol to them.

Please enjoy:

As, once, he had provided something to rally round and fight for,

Please enjoy:

so his very shape and form spurred the maps team on to new feats of programming.

Please enjoy:

There were other things, too,

Please enjoy:

that he was keeping to himself for now.

Please enjoy:

His visits to the borders

Please enjoy:

to welcome newcomers into Belgium,

Please enjoy:

and the care packages he funded by selling off his stores of treasure

Please enjoy:

from the bad colonial days.

Please enjoy:

“Any questions?”

Please enjoy:

he said, into the hush.

Please enjoy:

Lev Two-Tails raised a silver paw.

Please enjoy:

“We all know something that looks cool today can be hideously out of place in a few decades,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “How do you know this won’t be one of them?”

Please enjoy:

“Are you referring to my brief career as a rap star?” Leo asked, before anyone else could.

Please enjoy:

“Actually, I was thinking of Communism,” said the younger lion. “But the point still stands.”

Please enjoy:

“My point,” Leo replied,

Please enjoy:

“is that it doesn’t matter if something we try turns out to be silly,

Please enjoy:

as long as we keep trying.”

Please enjoy:

“Isn’t that just delaying the inevitable?

Please enjoy:

All this effort, just to keep up appearances.

Please enjoy:

If they don’t need us any more, and we can’t help them,

Please enjoy:

maybe we should just…fade

Please enjoy:

away.” Leo, startled,

Please enjoy:

looked properly at Lyonesse;

Please enjoy:

noticed how old and tired she looked.

Please enjoy:

As his gaze wandered across the assembled lions,

Please enjoy:

with their fur of argent

Please enjoy:

and gules and or,

Please enjoy:

he realised that he wasn’t the only one who felt

Please enjoy:

left behind as the decades moved on.

Please enjoy:

Even Lev had seen his territory chopped and changed over a relatively short

Please enjoy:

lifespan. Many of them, like him, had watched the blue flag with its gold stars creep into their territory,

Please enjoy:

and wondered what it heralded.

Please enjoy:

“We’ve all been afraid of change,”

Please enjoy:

Leo told them. “Our countries change and our people change, and we worry they’ll reject us.

Please enjoy:

They make new alliances and unions, and we get scared that they won’t need us any more.

Please enjoy:

They form bigger and

Please enjoy:

bigger societies, and we’re afraid they’ll lose their identity, and us.”

Please enjoy:

He spread his paws,

Please enjoy:

widening the gaps between neighbouring hamlets.

Please enjoy:

“But look at us! Look at

Please enjoy:

LION! I can get hold of any of you for a chat, whenever I want.

Please enjoy:

Lev can show me what’s going on in his country, just using his phone.

Please enjoy:

And in a few years,

Please enjoy:

all this will sound just as quaint as telex.”

Please enjoy:

“Telex the thing? Or Telex the synthpop band?”

Please enjoy:

“Lev,” Lyonesse warned,

Please enjoy:

and the Czech lion subsided, swishing his two tails.

Please enjoy:

Leo plunged onward.

Please enjoy:

“When our people disperse to other countries,

Please enjoy:

they need things that remind them of home.

Please enjoy:

Food. Comic books.

Please enjoy:

Flags. The very things that the new ones who come in adopt to help them learn and fit in.

Please enjoy:

When online friends say,

Please enjoy:

hey, what’s it like living in Belgium, or Czechia, or wherever

Please enjoy:

—we’re part of that.

Please enjoy:

We’re Lions International,

Please enjoy:

remember?” He was freestyling now, going off the map.

Please enjoy:

It was a heady feeling.

Please enjoy:

Leo tossed his head back and shook out his mane.

Please enjoy:

“There might not be flags where we’re going,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “There might not be borders, or nations. But there will be lions.

Please enjoy:

And there will definitely

Please enjoy:

be stroopwafels.”

Please enjoy:

He left the stage

Please enjoy:

to furious applause.

Please enjoy:

Even though some of it might have been at the prospect of biscuits,

Please enjoy:

he was confident that some was for his speech.

Please enjoy:

He hoped he was right about the future,

Please enjoy:

but it wasn’t his place to try and influence it.

Please enjoy:

He just brought the past to the table,

Please enjoy:

for his people to remember the good bits and acknowledge the bad bits.

Please enjoy:

He had rallied the lions and he would rally his nation, too.

Please enjoy:

He’d like to see a pissing statue arouse such passion in its audience!

Please enjoy:

The other delegates stood,

Please enjoy:

beginning to mingle and head for the refreshments.

Please enjoy:

The low purr of their chatter had a cheerful, excited tone.

Please enjoy:

As Leo made his way past Lyonesse, she put a paw on his shoulder and touched her warm, pink nose against his inky one.

Please enjoy:

“Excellent speech, LB,”

Please enjoy:

she growled into his ear,

Please enjoy:

her beard tickling the sensitive hairs there.

Please enjoy:

He rustled at her touch,

Please enjoy:

and for the second time that morning

Please enjoy:

he looked at the old British lion

Please enjoy:

as if he had never seen her before.

Please enjoy:

Somewhere inside Leo Belgicus,

Please enjoy:

a border crumbled.
