“Sound Check”

Please enjoy:

by K.C. Shaw

Please enjoy:

Anna slumped against the bus window and stared at the unmoving traffic.

Please enjoy:

She wasn’t sure what city they were in and didn’t care.

Please enjoy:

It wasn’t her job to yell

Please enjoy:

“Helloooo Tulsa! Are you ready to rock?”

Please enjoy:

that evening, after all.

Please enjoy:

She was just the drummer.

Please enjoy:

The bus had been in standstill traffic for over twenty minutes,

Please enjoy:

and to make things worse, the AC in the rear lounge was out.

Please enjoy:

The band and their tour manager were crammed into the small front lounge where it was slightly cooler.

Please enjoy:

Anna’s plans for the afternoon drained away

Please enjoy:

with every passing minute.

Please enjoy:

She wouldn’t have time for a long walk to stretch her legs,

Please enjoy:

wouldn’t have time to find a coffee shop and spend an hour in blissful solitude.

Please enjoy:

“We’re going to miss sound check,”

Please enjoy:

Jasmine said in a flat, angry voice.

Please enjoy:

She raked her fluffy fur with her claws

Please enjoy:

as though that would help cool her down.

Please enjoy:

Even sweaty and grouchy, the singer was gorgeous.

Please enjoy:

With their guitarist, Evie,

Please enjoy:

slouching next to her the pair might as well be posing for the cover of a music magazine.

Please enjoy:

Jasmine’s black-tufted lynx ears

Please enjoy:

and the vivid black streaks in her pale coat

Please enjoy:

matched the black face stripes of Evie’s pronghorn markings.

Please enjoy:

Anna thought about getting her camera out of the backpack at her feet,

Please enjoy:

thought about just opening the camera on her phone.

Please enjoy:

But it seemed like too much trouble.

Please enjoy:

“We’ve got plenty of time,” Charlotte said.

Please enjoy:

She looked at their manager. “Right, Gavin?

Please enjoy:

Lots of time?” Charlotte was the band’s bass player,

Please enjoy:

a petite bear with black fur like rough velvet.

Please enjoy:

Ordinarily she and Anna were besties,

Please enjoy:

friends since high school, but today

Please enjoy:

Anna found herself irritated at the whiny note in the bear’s voice.

Please enjoy:

“We’re fine,” their manager said without looking up from his phone.

Please enjoy:

Jasmine narrowed her eyes as though about to go for the fox’s throat.

Please enjoy:

Anna sighed. She just wanted a few hours all to herself.

Please enjoy:

She thought of the coffee shop she still hoped to find, where she could

Please enjoy:

sip a caramel latte in anonymity.

Please enjoy:

Unless she was with the band,

Please enjoy:

no one looked twice at her.

Please enjoy:

Half the time she was mistaken for a scruffy wolf or some kind of dog,

Please enjoy:

unless they were out west where coyotes were common.

Please enjoy:

She peered at the flat horizon beyond the five-lane interstate

Please enjoy:

and what looked like a bunch of warehouses.

Please enjoy:

They might really be in Tulsa.

Please enjoy:

The bus jerked as the driver put it in gear.

Please enjoy:

It eased forward—barely walking pace, but farther than they’d moved in almost half an hour now.

Please enjoy:

The band cheered.

Please enjoy:

For a moment Anna felt good.

Please enjoy:

Then the bus stopped again.

Please enjoy:

Five minutes later

Please enjoy:

Evie said, “Oh my God, Jazz, did you see the review of our show last night?

Please enjoy:

This condescending guy called us a girl group!”

Please enjoy:

Anna rubbed her forehead.

Please enjoy:

She was getting a headache. ***

Please enjoy:

They missed sound check.

Please enjoy:

After three weeks on the road the sound crew had everything dialed in, so the band didn’t really need a sound check—but of course

Please enjoy:

Jasmine and Evie complained to Gavin.

Please enjoy:

Anna hung back until they were done venting

Please enjoy:

and had left to find the green room, then said to Gavin,

Please enjoy:

“That’s why we pay you the big bucks.”

Please enjoy:

He didn’t smile,

Please enjoy:

just said, “Remind the others we’ve got a reporter on the way who wants to talk to all of you.”

Please enjoy:

“Radio or TV?” Anna asked.

Please enjoy:

“Local podcaster. Radio is later, at six.

Please enjoy:

Tell Jasmine the podcaster is a big fan.”

Please enjoy:

Anna left to share the news that instead of relaxing with a drink,

Please enjoy:

they all needed to be presentable and on their best behavior for the rest of the afternoon.

Please enjoy:

But it was part of the job

Please enjoy:

and they were professionals.

Please enjoy:

Jasmine took the news with barely a sigh.

Please enjoy:

“Fine, but I’m showering as soon as the podcaster’s gone and if there are no towels,

Please enjoy:

I’m going to piss in everyone’s bunk tonight.” “We’re in

Please enjoy:

a hotel tonight,”

Please enjoy:

Evie said with a smirk.

Please enjoy:

She popped something in her mouth and chewed loudly.

Please enjoy:

Charlotte had already showered and was frantically blow-drying her fur,

Please enjoy:

standing stark naked under the air conditioning unit.

Please enjoy:

“Don’t eat ice, Evie. It’s bad for your teeth.”

Please enjoy:

In answer, Evie popped another chunk of ice into her mouth and chewed even more loudly.

Please enjoy:

Anna found she had no patience today for her bandmates’ usual banter.

Please enjoy:

She didn’t even want a latte anymore. She just wanted to go home.

Please enjoy:

She left the green room

Please enjoy:

and wandered around backstage, getting in the way of the road crew. “Anna,

Please enjoy:

there you are!” Gavin sounded cheerful, although his wide fox’s grin was slightly forced.

Please enjoy:

“Our podcaster is here for that interview.”

Please enjoy:

A blond dog stood beside him,

Please enjoy:

her fur falling in elegant waves down her neck from silky,

Please enjoy:

lapped-over ears.

Please enjoy:

Anna was surprised at her sudden blaze of resentment.

Please enjoy:

She schooled her face into a welcoming smile.

Please enjoy:

The dog wore a T-shirt from their first tour six years ago, and a knee-length black skirt that billowed as she wagged her tail in excitement.

Please enjoy:

Anna’s resentment faded into pity.

Please enjoy:

The poor dog had probably spent all day deciding what to wear and fixing her fur,

Please enjoy:

only to be met by the drummer, who was in a filthy mood.

Please enjoy:

“Pleased to meet you,”

Please enjoy:

Anna said. “The others are still getting ready. They won’t be long.”

Please enjoy:

Before the dog could respond,

Please enjoy:

Jasmine bounded up to them as though she had all the energy in the world, with Evie close behind.

Please enjoy:

Charlotte followed,

Please enjoy:

dressed now but still damp around the ears.

Please enjoy:

Anna stood with the others while they answered the podcaster’s questions.

Please enjoy:

The dog was a good interviewer, at least.

Please enjoy:

She didn’t fall back on the usual

Please enjoy:

“Tell us about your new album”

Please enjoy:

and “How’s your tour been so far?”

Please enjoy:

Unfortunately, almost all of her questions were for Jasmine and Evie,

Please enjoy:

with an occasional polite question for the whole band.

Please enjoy:

Anna’s mind wandered.

Please enjoy:

She’d bought an actual house six months ago

Please enjoy:

—nothing extravagant; they weren’t superstars or anything,

Please enjoy:

but their last few albums had done really well and she actually had money for once.

Please enjoy:

Her two-bedroom cottage

Please enjoy:

backed up to a wooded area with hiking trails.

Please enjoy:

With a job that kept her surrounded by people,

Please enjoy:

Anna craved solitude whenever she could get it.

Please enjoy:

She wished she was walking in the forest right now,

Please enjoy:

through dappled sun and shade, with just enough of a breeze to keep her cool.

Please enjoy:

The interviewer said,

Please enjoy:

“I saw a review this morning that called you a girl group.

Please enjoy:

Do you get that kind of dismissive attitude often?”

Please enjoy:

“All the time,” Jasmine said with a snarl.

Please enjoy:

“No one calls Metallica a boy band.

Please enjoy:

They’d be laughed out of the room if they did, but just because we’ve got a female drummer suddenly we’re a girl group.”

Please enjoy:

“It’s all my fault,”

Please enjoy:

Anna said with a smile.

Please enjoy:

“It’s the patriarchy’s fault!” Jasmine struck an angry pose

Please enjoy:

—probably unconsciously

Please enjoy:

—and Gavin snapped a couple of pictures.

Please enjoy:

Next tour they’d probably rate a band photographer, if their next album did as well as this new one.

Please enjoy:

Anna sighed quietly.

Please enjoy:

Maybe she wouldn’t be on the next tour.

Please enjoy:

Maybe this was her last one.

Please enjoy:

Maybe she’d retire from music entirely and get a real job—doing what, she didn’t know,

Please enjoy:

but her parents would be happy.

Please enjoy:

She was relieved when Jack, her drum technician,

Please enjoy:

approached the group with a diffident set to his ears.

Please enjoy:

She gave the interviewer a smile and broad wave that she hoped conveyed

Please enjoy:

regret that she had to duck out for a really important issue with her gear. “Hey,

Please enjoy:

Jack,” she said as soon as they were out of earshot.

Please enjoy:

“What’s up?” “Sorry to interrupt,” he said.

Please enjoy:

“No no no no no! I was bored solid.

Please enjoy:

Something wrong with the kick pedal?”

Please enjoy:

Jack was holding the pedal in both paws.

Please enjoy:

He was a dog of indeterminate breed,

Please enjoy:

as different from the golden-furred interviewer as Anna was.

Please enjoy:

His brown and white fur had wiry guard hairs like a terrier,

Please enjoy:

but his big triangular ears looked plush and his tail was almost as fluffy as Gavin’s.

Please enjoy:

He was soft-spoken

Please enjoy:

and soft-eyed, a little jowly, and only Charlotte knew that Anna was

Please enjoy:

desperately in love with him.

Please enjoy:

Since Jack was happily married with two pups,

Please enjoy:

she kept her feelings to herself.

Please enjoy:

Besides, a really good drum tech was worth his weight in gold.

Please enjoy:

She didn’t want to risk losing him.

Please enjoy:

“I thought something felt off earlier so I took a closer look,” he said.

Please enjoy:

“See what’s wrong?”

Please enjoy:

He held the pedal out to her.

Please enjoy:

She frowned at it. “What am I looking for? It seems okay.”

Please enjoy:

“Here.” He pointed with a stubby-clawed finger.

Please enjoy:

“The beater shaft.”

Please enjoy:

“Is it bent? I should have a spare.”

Please enjoy:

Jack chuckled. Anna’s tail gave a wag without her meaning to.

Please enjoy:

“The beater shaft is fine.”

Please enjoy:

He unscrewed it to show her.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t know how you managed it, but the beater hub is bent out of whack.

Please enjoy:

I tried pushing it back into place but it won’t budge.”

Please enjoy:

Anna poked at the hub,

Please enjoy:

which now that she looked at it did appear askew.

Please enjoy:

No way she had done that; someone must have dropped it,

Please enjoy:

and possibly then ran over it with a truck.

Please enjoy:

“Is there a music store in town? I can run out and pick up a new pedal,” she said.

Please enjoy:

“The promoter’s gone to look through the house gear. If they have a decent pedal,

Please enjoy:

that’ll get us through tonight.”

Please enjoy:

A tall buck with antlers in velvet approached.

Please enjoy:

He was wearing a neat black suit and stood out as a result among the roadies and musicians.

Please enjoy:

He was definitely Evie’s type.

Please enjoy:

Anna wondered if they’d met yet, and remembered the pronghorn’s smirk when she mentioned they were in a hotel tonight instead of sleeping on the bus.

Please enjoy:

Yeah, they’d probably met.

Please enjoy:

The buck said,

Please enjoy:

“I found two pedals. Will either work?”

Please enjoy:

Anna took them both.

Please enjoy:

“We’ll try them out, thanks.”

Please enjoy:

Her drum kit was on a riser onstage, gleaming under the bright house lights.

Please enjoy:

Jack knelt stiffly to attach one of the pedals to the bass drum.

Please enjoy:

“Okay, try this one out.”

Please enjoy:

Anna slid onto the throne, and as always when she sat behind her kit onstage,

Please enjoy:

she had a moment of pure excitement.

Please enjoy:

She wanted to grab her sticks

Please enjoy:

and fill the venue with noise.

Please enjoy:

But her band didn’t go on until eight, which meant several hours of waiting

Please enjoy:

—and not hours she could spend on her own, either.

Please enjoy:

If she was lucky she’d still have time for a short walk and a latte somewhere nearby,

Please enjoy:

but more likely she’d be doing interviews and meet-and-greets until their set started.

Please enjoy:

She tried both pedals and settled on the Speed King. “Good choice,”

Please enjoy:

Jack said, getting up with a grunt.

Please enjoy:

“My first pedal was a Speed King.

Please enjoy:

I’ve always liked Ludwig.”

Please enjoy:

Anna’s ears pricked with interest.

Please enjoy:

Jack didn’t talk much about his drumming,

Please enjoy:

although she’d heard him play and he was good.

Please enjoy:

“When was that? I’m trying to picture puppy Jack and can’t.” He laughed.

Please enjoy:

“Long before you were born, that’s for sure.

Please enjoy:

I think we’re all set here. I’ll call ahead to Tulsa tomorrow morning and make sure we’ve got a replacement pedal waiting when we arrive.”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, I thought we were in Tulsa right now.”

Please enjoy:

Anna followed him into the wings.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, Jack. Can I ask you something?”

Please enjoy:

“Of course.” Anna looked around for somewhere quiet enough for a conversation, without luck.

Please enjoy:

Backstage at even a small concert was nonstop chaos.

Please enjoy:

“You did a lot of touring back in the day, right?”

Please enjoy:

she asked him. “A fair bit, yeah.”

Please enjoy:

“How did you deal with the burnout?”

Please enjoy:

Jack looked thoughtful.

Please enjoy:

“I just kept my head down and did my job.

Please enjoy:

That’s all you can do, really. I tried not to party too much, tried to get enough sleep.”

Please enjoy:

Good advice, maybe,

Please enjoy:

but not what Anna wanted.

Please enjoy:

She waved a paw in frustration, trying to find

Please enjoy:

the right way to phrase her question. “I mean

Please enjoy:

—I guess I want to know why you decided to become a drum tech after you quit touring.

Please enjoy:

You have even worse hours than the band does but you don’t get the high of playing.”

Please enjoy:

Jack gave her a wry smile.

Please enjoy:

“I didn’t quit touring on purpose, hon.

Please enjoy:

It just happened.

Please enjoy:

My band broke up about the time my oldest was born,

Please enjoy:

so I didn’t hurry to find a new gig.

Please enjoy:

A friend asked me to tech for his kid’s band a few years later and it turns out

Please enjoy:

I really enjoy it.

Please enjoy:

Low stress and I get to listen to great music every night.”

Please enjoy:

“Don’t you miss playing, though?”

Please enjoy:

Anna asked. “It’s the only thing that makes touring worth it for me—and I’m not sure it’s enough anymore.”

Please enjoy:

Jack’s smile this time

Please enjoy:

was kind and a little sad.

Please enjoy:

“It’s the highs and lows that wear you out.

Please enjoy:

You pour your soul out onstage, then crash afterwards and wonder why you’re so tired all the time.”

Please enjoy:

“Yeah,” Anna said quietly. ***

Please enjoy:

Late that night, after their show, Anna relaxed with her bandmates in the green room.

Please enjoy:

It was their usual post-show ritual.

Please enjoy:

They drank beer and ate whatever food Gavin had brought in,

Please enjoy:

and people dropped by to talk about the show.

Please enjoy:

Some of them were fans with backstage passes won from local radio stations,

Please enjoy:

some were members of the sound and light crews checking in,

Please enjoy:

some were label reps or promoters or fellow musicians in town

Please enjoy:

—a parade of strangers who came to wish them well.

Please enjoy:

After one beer, Anna switched to water.

Please enjoy:

It was easy to get dehydrated on the road.

Please enjoy:

She put her feet up on the battered coffee table

Please enjoy:

and let the show’s musical high mellow into a weary contentment.

Please enjoy:

Before long, though,

Please enjoy:

the talk and commotion started to grate on her nerves.

Please enjoy:

She just wanted to be alone.

Please enjoy:

She found Gavin flirting with the blond podcaster, who was clearly having the best day of her life.

Please enjoy:

Anna hated to interrupt.

Please enjoy:

“How far is our hotel, Gavin? Walking distance?”

Please enjoy:

He glanced at her.

Please enjoy:

“Hm? Oh, it’s about half a mile away.

Please enjoy:

Turn right on the main road and walk until you see a Days Inn.”

Please enjoy:

He fumbled in his pocket

Please enjoy:

and pulled out key cards in little paper sleeves.

Please enjoy:

“Here’s yours. Luggage in your room.

Please enjoy:

I’ve already emailed tomorrow’s day sheet.

Please enjoy:

Bus call is at eight.”

Please enjoy:

Anna thanked him, but he had already turned back to the podcaster.

Please enjoy:

Anna caught herself smiling as she left the green room.

Please enjoy:

Instead of ducking out the nearest exit, she went through the venue to the front doors.

Please enjoy:

There were always fans waiting at the door nearest the bus,

Please enjoy:

hoping to talk to the band or at least see them.

Please enjoy:

She’d rather avoid them.

Please enjoy:

A raccoon was wiping down the bar while a greyhound counted the cash drawers efficiently.

Please enjoy:

Neither of them gave Anna more than a cursory glance.

Please enjoy:

The entrance was locked,

Please enjoy:

but after Anna rattled at it a few times a ginger tabby cat hurried in to unlock it for her.

Please enjoy:

Anna stepped outside with relief.

Please enjoy:

A few groups of people still stood outside, laughing and talking together,

Please enjoy:

but no one even looked at her.

Please enjoy:

Happily anonymous, she walked down the street by herself.

Please enjoy:

The hot day had turned into a mild, cool night.

Please enjoy:

The breeze brought an exciting combination of smells to Anna’s nose,

Please enjoy:

from truck exhaust to cooking food,

Please enjoy:

with the chilly scent of impending rain behind it all.

Please enjoy:

As she walked, she felt her tension ease.

Please enjoy:

Her ears twitched at the sound of light footsteps running toward her.

Please enjoy:

She turned, ears flattened and lips pulled back from her teeth in a snarl.

Please enjoy:

But instead of a mugger,

Please enjoy:

a young mountain lion stumbled to a halt nearby.

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry I startled you,”

Please enjoy:

the girl said. She had the slender,

Please enjoy:

long-legged appearance of a teenager—surely too young to be out so late, Anna thought.

Please enjoy:

“Um, could I get your autograph?”

Please enjoy:

Anna forced her hackles to settle and her ears to unfold.

Please enjoy:

“Sure. I didn’t mean to growl.

Please enjoy:

It’s been a long day.”

Please enjoy:

She accepted the pocket-sized autograph book the mountain lion handed her,

Please enjoy:

and took out the Sharpie pen she always carried.

Please enjoy:

The autograph book looked vintage,

Please enjoy:

its cover decorated with stylized daisies in mustard yellow and avocado green.

Please enjoy:

The edges of the cover were worn

Please enjoy:

and the pages felt loose when Anna turned them.

Please enjoy:

The ink on the signatures was faded.

Please enjoy:

“Was this your mom’s or something?”

Please enjoy:

Anna asked, interested despite herself.

Please enjoy:

“No, I found it in an antique shop. I don’t know who any of those people are.

Please enjoy:

Actors, maybe.” Anna read an inscription in elegant, old-fashioned handwriting:

Please enjoy:

“To Mandy, my #1 fan.

Please enjoy:

Keep the faith, sweetheart.”

Please enjoy:

“I wish my handwriting was that nice,” Anna said.

Please enjoy:

She found a blank page about halfway through.

Please enjoy:

“What’s your name?

Please enjoy:

Not Mandy, I hope.”

Please enjoy:

The mountain lion laughed.

Please enjoy:

“I go by Izzy. Um, could you write something about drumming?

Please enjoy:

I’m a drummer too. I mean,

Please enjoy:

I’m not as good as you are but I practice a lot.

Please enjoy:

I just started a band with a couple of friends.” Izzy twisted

Please enjoy:

one foot behind her other ankle in an awkward,

Please enjoy:

nervous gesture. Anna smiled.

Please enjoy:

“It’s always good to meet another drummer, especially female.”

Please enjoy:

Izzy twisted her paws together too.

Please enjoy:

“You were the reason I started taking drum lessons.

Please enjoy:

I’d never seen a girl drummer before you.”

Please enjoy:

Anna wrote, “To Izzy,

Please enjoy:

my #1 fan.

Please enjoy:

Keep the faith, sweetheart.”

Please enjoy:

Then, still smiling,

Please enjoy:

she marked “faith” out and wrote

Please enjoy:

“beat.” After a moment’s hesitation she added another sentence:

Please enjoy:

“Never forget why you started playing drums.”

Please enjoy:

She signed her name

Please enjoy:

and handed the autograph book back before the mountain lion twisted herself entirely into a pretzel.

Please enjoy:

Izzy stammered her thanks,

Please enjoy:

grinning so widely she showed all her teeth.

Please enjoy:

Anna continued her walk to the hotel.

Please enjoy:

No one else bothered her.

Please enjoy:

Instead of thinking about home,

Please enjoy:

Anna’s thoughts ran ahead

Please enjoy:

to Tulsa, Detroit, Vancouver, Portland, and dozens more cities.

Please enjoy:

If they kept getting good crowds, the tour might continue for the better part of a year.

Please enjoy:

The thought didn’t dismay her anymore.

Please enjoy:

Instead, she thought of a hundred venues across the world.

Please enjoy:

She thought of a hundred girls like Izzy, picking up drumsticks for the first time

Please enjoy:

because they saw her play.

Please enjoy:

She was humming cheerfully

Please enjoy:

when she reached the hotel.
