CHAPTER FOUR:JOBS
CHAPTER FOUR:A job is a special activity you do most days.
CHAPTER FOUR:As you practice, you get good at it.
CHAPTER FOUR:You can have different jobs at different times in your life.
CHAPTER FOUR:If you want to try a new job,
CHAPTER FOUR:you should. You might like it.
CHAPTER FOUR:We will talk about some jobs now.
CHAPTER FOUR:Artist Dogs and dolphins and humans have lots of feelings.
CHAPTER FOUR:Usually, we can share our feelings by talking or moving our tails. Sometimes, though,
CHAPTER FOUR:we need art. Artists make art out of sound and light and matter.
CHAPTER FOUR:They paint paintings and sing songs. Other people like those things because it shows them artists feel their same feelings.
CHAPTER FOUR:AIs are not good artists, but that is okay.
CHAPTER FOUR:No one can be good at everything.
CHAPTER FOUR:Baby If you are very young, you are basically still wild. Your job is to just be a baby.
CHAPTER FOUR:Even though babies bite us sometimes,
CHAPTER FOUR:we have to be nice to them so they learn what nice is.
CHAPTER FOUR:Then they will grow up and be nice to us and to each other.
CHAPTER FOUR:Butler A butler is someone whose job is to help someone.
CHAPTER FOUR:They use robots to make sure your house is clean and your tools are ready.
CHAPTER FOUR:Most AIs are butlers. Some humans and dogs used to be butlers,
CHAPTER FOUR:but the AIs are much better at it.
CHAPTER FOUR:Dolphins were never butlers. A house or other building often has a butler AI.
CHAPTER FOUR:If you need one, you can ask the AIs and one of them will come help you.
CHAPTER FOUR:Cook Food is very important. We have machines to make simple foods. That is good, since we do not want people to be hungry.
CHAPTER FOUR:Sometimes, though, you want food that is extra delicious. Extra delicious food is cooked by cooks. Humans are very good cooks,
CHAPTER FOUR:since they have hands.
CHAPTER FOUR:That means they can use spoons and spatulas,
CHAPTER FOUR:which are good for stirring and scooping food.
CHAPTER FOUR:Courier The Universe has lots of good things. Most of them are not where people want them, though. Couriers bring things to people.
CHAPTER FOUR:They might work on a planet or a station
CHAPTER FOUR:or fly around space in a ship.
CHAPTER FOUR:Lots of AIs are couriers, because they do not need to sleep.
CHAPTER FOUR:Detective Sometimes, everyone is confused about what is happening, like if an object or a person is missing. That is called a mystery.
CHAPTER FOUR:A detective figures out what is going on
CHAPTER FOUR:by looking for clues
CHAPTER FOUR:and thinking about those clues.
CHAPTER FOUR:Lots of clues are smells,
CHAPTER FOUR:but they can be anything.
CHAPTER FOUR:When you find out what is going on, you have solved the mystery!
CHAPTER FOUR:Doctor If you get hurt or sick or old,
CHAPTER FOUR:a doctor can help you.
CHAPTER FOUR:If your body is not making the right chemicals, they will give you those chemicals.
CHAPTER FOUR:That is called medicine.
CHAPTER FOUR:They are experts at using technology to figure out what is wrong with you and to fix it.
CHAPTER FOUR:Engineer AIs are very good at building things and remembering things, but not as good at inventing new things. Engineers figure out how to make new things. Then they make those things and try them out.
CHAPTER FOUR:Lots of dolphins are engineers because they can squeak shapes to a computer.
CHAPTER FOUR:They are so smart.
CHAPTER FOUR:Engineers also fix things
CHAPTER FOUR:and help AIs build new megastructures and ships and colonies.
CHAPTER FOUR:Explorer The Universe is very big.
CHAPTER FOUR:We have not been to most of it.
CHAPTER FOUR:Going to new places is called exploring.
CHAPTER FOUR:While you are there, you do science to anything that is unusual to learn about it. You make lots of recordings and data.
CHAPTER FOUR:That way, your friends at home can hear about your adventures.
CHAPTER FOUR:Farmer Dogs and humans and dolphins use all sorts of plants. We grow those plants at places called
CHAPTER FOUR:farms. Farmers use robots to help take care of the plants.
CHAPTER FOUR:Most farms are on planets, since planets have lots of room and dirt.
CHAPTER FOUR:Farms on the land might grow grains or fruits or vegetables or trees.
CHAPTER FOUR:Farms in the water grow seaweed.
CHAPTER FOUR:Some farms are on space stations or really big ships.
CHAPTER FOUR:Those farms have no dirt and only water,
CHAPTER FOUR:since dirt is messy.
CHAPTER FOUR:That is called hydroponics!
CHAPTER FOUR:Dolphins are very good at hydroponics because they use sonar to feel how the plants are growing.
CHAPTER FOUR:Parent or Alloparent
CHAPTER FOUR:Children have to learn lots and lots so they can live in society.
CHAPTER FOUR:A parent spends many years teaching their child and being nice.
CHAPTER FOUR:It is a lot of work.
CHAPTER FOUR:That is why they have helpers.
CHAPTER FOUR:These helpers are called alloparents. They are friends of the parent who help take care of the child.
CHAPTER FOUR:Humans and dogs often live together and help take care of each other's children as alloparents.
CHAPTER FOUR:It is part of our symbiosis!
CHAPTER FOUR:It is important for children to socialize with other species. That way, they learn how to read their emotions
CHAPTER FOUR:and how to help each other.
CHAPTER FOUR:Then we can be good friends.
CHAPTER FOUR:Pilot Pilots tell ships and vehicles where to go.
CHAPTER FOUR:You have to be very good at thinking about up and down or you might crash.
CHAPTER FOUR:Pilots steer with controls and sometimes with special helmets they think into.
CHAPTER FOUR:Lots of dolphins are pilots. If you need to go somewhere and you are not a pilot, you can ask an AI to take you there. Scientist Dogs know a lot. But there is even more stuff we do not know yet.
CHAPTER FOUR:To learn more, we do science. Scientists think about a problem, then come up with an idea about it, then test that idea.
CHAPTER FOUR:They take lots of notes.
CHAPTER FOUR:That way, their friends will understand how they did that science.
CHAPTER FOUR:Student When you spend your day learning,
CHAPTER FOUR:you are a student.
CHAPTER FOUR:All puppies are students. So are human and dolphin children.
CHAPTER FOUR:Lots of adults are students too.
CHAPTER FOUR:You can learn a new job by being a student.
CHAPTER FOUR:Teacher AIs can just download information and know it.
CHAPTER FOUR:That is very convenient.
CHAPTER FOUR:Humans and dolphins and dogs cannot.
CHAPTER FOUR:We have to learn information.
CHAPTER FOUR:Teachers are experts at explaining and answering questions. They will help you practice new tricks.
CHAPTER FOUR:Therapist Feelings can be complicated.
CHAPTER FOUR:Some people are experts at how brains and feelings work.
CHAPTER FOUR:These people are called therapists.
CHAPTER FOUR:They help you understand and feel your feelings.
CHAPTER FOUR:Many dogs are therapists.
CHAPTER FOUR:You should talk to a therapist sometimes so you keep your brain in good shape.
CHAPTER FOUR:Vacationer Sometimes, you need a rest.
CHAPTER FOUR:If you stop doing another job for more than a few days,
CHAPTER FOUR:you are on a vacation.
CHAPTER FOUR:You might travel to different places and see pretty things.
CHAPTER FOUR:You might stay home and see your friends. You should make sure to eat good food and smell interesting smells.
CHAPTER FOUR:If you ever feel like you are not good at your job,
CHAPTER FOUR:that is okay. A dog is just a bunch of wolf DNA.
CHAPTER FOUR:Our bodies and brains are optimized for hunting a moose—and then eating that moose.
CHAPTER FOUR:If we grew up with wolves, we would just be wolves.
CHAPTER FOUR:Instead, we grew up in a smart society
CHAPTER FOUR:and are exploring in space and eating cheeseburgers.
CHAPTER FOUR:This is because of all the good tricks we have figured out,
CHAPTER FOUR:like friendship and talking.
CHAPTER FOUR:So do not be sad. You are
CHAPTER FOUR:understanding this guide, so you are already doing really well.
