“Let Them Have Cake”

Please enjoy:

by Spottystuff A small, black fox in a thick cloak

Please enjoy:

moved through the torchlit streets

Please enjoy:

of Dalmatia in the dead of night.

Please enjoy:

Not an unusual sight, all things considered.

Please enjoy:

Cloaked and unsavoury figures would usually come out after dark.

Please enjoy:

The few scattered lanterns and torches provided little light,

Please enjoy:

and in this part of town it was a precarious time to walk alone.

Please enjoy:

To Kieran, however,

Please enjoy:

the oppressive darkness in these streets suited him

Please enjoy:

perfectly. The shadows turned him into some background character whom one wouldn’t afford a second glance.

Please enjoy:

One might never stop to wonder why his footsteps were soundless,

Please enjoy:

why his robe never seemed to rustle,

Please enjoy:

why his movements were so graceful for someone

Please enjoy:

who looked as down on his luck as he did.

Please enjoy:

He wouldn’t display his gold and ruby signet ring,

Please enjoy:

which identified him as a royal assassin to those who knew,

Please enjoy:

as well as anyone who had heard the rumours.

Please enjoy:

If he smiled now,

Please enjoy:

two golden fangs would glint in the weak light,

Please enjoy:

betraying his beggar façade,

Please enjoy:

but it would only grace his lips for one person in this world.

Please enjoy:

His appearance was whatever he wanted others to see.

Please enjoy:

That was just how he was trained.

Please enjoy:

Anyone would be justified in thinking he was

Please enjoy:

nobody. But they would be wrong.

Please enjoy:

The houses around him stood like cliffs, dark and seemingly abandoned.

Please enjoy:

But from them came a mess of different smells, and to anyone who could pick these smells up,

Please enjoy:

the houses appeared as riotous centres of social congregation.

Please enjoy:

His scent blended in nicely with the smell of the crowded houses above him.

Please enjoy:

Their sheer height was impressive to anyone walking the streets.

Please enjoy:

They were huddled so close to the street,

Please enjoy:

and the street was so narrow,

Please enjoy:

that they seemed to touch at their peaks.

Please enjoy:

Small balconies draped their exteriors,

Please enjoy:

sometimes blocking out the light from the moon altogether.

Please enjoy:

A flicker of light got his attention.

Please enjoy:

The clattering sounds of metal on metal

Please enjoy:

and the sounds of voices could be heard.

Please enjoy:

The night watch. They knew the fox,

Please enjoy:

though only by his sliced ear,

Please enjoy:

black coat, and the fox scent.

Please enjoy:

They never managed to get close enough to exchange formalities,

Please enjoy:

so Kieran had to baptize them himself,

Please enjoy:

from what he knew of them.

Please enjoy:

The two scents which were nearing the junction in front of him

Please enjoy:

belonged to Beer-breath and Skunk.

Please enjoy:

For once, the fox was thankful that this kingdom was full of people

Please enjoy:

who didn’t wash. He aimed for the nearest doorway on his path,

Please enjoy:

leaning against the door with his hood pulled down over his eyes.

Please enjoy:

The two guards rounded a corner, and sure enough,

Please enjoy:

a large brown bear with a pikestaff

Please enjoy:

and a holstered flintlock,

Please enjoy:

and a black and white skunk with a long musket on his back

Please enjoy:

came down the street at a noisy saunter.

Please enjoy:

They were conversing loud enough to wake the dead,

Please enjoy:

let alone whoever might try to sleep tonight.

Please enjoy:

The scent of skunk musk,

Please enjoy:

strong and unapologetic,

Please enjoy:

drifted into Kieran’s nostrils

Please enjoy:

and made him wince.

Please enjoy:

Had they bathed, they might be able to detect and separate a trace of Kieran’s familiar scent

Please enjoy:

in the mess of smells permeating the air of these streets. But they

Please enjoy:

neither smelled nor saw him.

Please enjoy:

As soon as they had passed, and their scents had drifted away,

Please enjoy:

Kieran continued walking towards the end of the street.

Please enjoy:

Though he usually delighted in antagonizing the guards,

Please enjoy:

he didn’t want to waste this night on these games.

Please enjoy:

Walking along the narrow street,

Please enjoy:

and into another one, just as narrow,

Please enjoy:

he padded over gravel,

Please enjoy:

cobblestone, and wooden planks spanning large puddles.

Please enjoy:

The constant background scent of waste and filth

Please enjoy:

hung like a blanket

Please enjoy:

all across the poorer quarters.

Please enjoy:

He was heading away from the smells.

Please enjoy:

This city was a dirty place, sure,

Please enjoy:

but there was one place where purity could be found.

Please enjoy:

He drew up to a shop front,

Please enjoy:

outside of which he’d stood many times before.

Please enjoy:

The red door bore the painting of a curious looking bread,

Please enjoy:

tied in a knot, with white paint denoting the glazing.

Please enjoy:

The door belonged to the famous pastry chef

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro. Kieran had often desired,

Please enjoy:

but never tasted his goods.

Please enjoy:

He specialised in sweets and cakes particularly,

Please enjoy:

and his price was insurmountable.

Please enjoy:

No commoner could ever hope to taste the craft of Don Lazzaro.

Please enjoy:

He enjoyed widespread fame in the court of Dalmatia, which had made him a very rich rat.

Please enjoy:

He had become so enamoured with his status and wealth

Please enjoy:

that he stopped selling his goods to anyone of lower birth,

Please enjoy:

not even letting them inside his shop.

Please enjoy:

Kieran was a squire by rank, but he was unlikely to ever be knighted,

Please enjoy:

and thus he was barred all the same.

Please enjoy:

No one in Dalmatia,

Please enjoy:

especially Don Lazzaro,

Please enjoy:

had any appreciation for the hard work of a royal assassin.

Please enjoy:

Kieran was but another commoner to be shouted at and denied.

Please enjoy:

Many a time he’d pushed his black snout up against the glass of the pastry chef’s red door

Please enjoy:

in hopes of catching the faint scents inside.

Please enjoy:

Enticing him, tempting him,

Please enjoy:

mocking him. All the nobles got their share, and he got nothing.

Please enjoy:

Not even his boyfriend, Kit,

Please enjoy:

the personal valet of the Duke,

Please enjoy:

had been afforded these sweets.

Please enjoy:

They were far too precious for a couple of low-born servants.

Please enjoy:

Poor helpless Kit.

Please enjoy:

He was not like Kieran,

Please enjoy:

he was a pure and pretty ermine weasel, well-groomed,

Please enjoy:

well-spoken, and well behaved.

Please enjoy:

A true gentleman’s gentleman.

Please enjoy:

Not a thief. No,

Please enjoy:

this task fell to the fox.

Please enjoy:

Kieran’s whole career involved making problems

Please enjoy:

go away. Tonight, his solutions were strapped to a leather belt on his thigh.

Please enjoy:

He drew back his cloak,

Please enjoy:

and the faint lantern light fell on a brace of thin metal implements.

Please enjoy:

They were good quality lockpicks made from fine,

Please enjoy:

castle forged steel,

Please enjoy:

and would never bend or break,

Please enjoy:

even against the heaviest sprung locks.

Please enjoy:

Thankfully, the castle blacksmith would happily accept Kieran’s money

Please enjoy:

without that inflated pride

Please enjoy:

which Don Lazzaro had.

Please enjoy:

The baker’s door was merely made to keep out the wind and rain,

Please enjoy:

its lock barely a formality to Kieran,

Please enjoy:

a measly single-barrelled contrivance of barely sufficient strength to even hold the door shut.

Please enjoy:

It never stood a chance.

Please enjoy:

He salivated at the thought of what lay on the other side,

Please enjoy:

and when the sweet, warm air hit his nostrils,

Please enjoy:

he all but drooled.

Please enjoy:

He pulled greedily at the door,

Please enjoy:

but before he could open it more than a foot,

Please enjoy:

the hinges complained loudly.

Please enjoy:

He hesitated. Considering how loud the night watch had been in passing just recently,

Please enjoy:

there might be people still awake in the houses around him.

Please enjoy:

He didn’t dare to chance it.

Please enjoy:

Sighing, he squeezed inside,

Please enjoy:

aware that his scent spread onto the door and frame.

Please enjoy:

Oh, well, he was just another fox stealing from another shop,

Please enjoy:

and the world would keep turning.

Please enjoy:

Kieran looked around in the dark room he had just entered.

Please enjoy:

He could see just as well in the dark as in the day.

Please enjoy:

The only differences were the colours,

Please enjoy:

which were washed out in greys and blacks.

Please enjoy:

He felt slightly disappointed at the limitations of his eyes when he looked at the jars of hard sweets on the counter.

Please enjoy:

They looked dull and monochrome,

Please enjoy:

somehow not as enticing as when Kieran had seen them from the other side of the window.

Please enjoy:

Even so, their sweet scents of fruits and sugar were

Please enjoy:

unmistakeable. Kieran took a pawfull,

Please enjoy:

then another, slipping the candy into a canvas bag he had slung from his belt.

Please enjoy:

He wanted so badly to pop just one in his mouth,

Please enjoy:

but he shovelled them all into his bag,

Please enjoy:

efficient and disciplined.

Please enjoy:

The fox understood the value of setting and atmosphere, if nothing else.

Please enjoy:

He would take his time

Please enjoy:

and enjoy them properly,

Please enjoy:

like how the lords and ladies would.

Please enjoy:

He’d open a bottle of wine and share the night with his boyfriend,

Please enjoy:

gorging like kings.

Please enjoy:

He couldn’t stop his tail from wagging.

Please enjoy:

Then he noticed a treasure.

Please enjoy:

A beautiful cake stood under a glass covering on a table

Please enjoy:

at the back of the shop.

Please enjoy:

whipped cream, shimmering white against the darkness,

Please enjoy:

covered half the cake,

Please enjoy:

and the coal black of coloured marzipan covered the other half.

Please enjoy:

An homage to the royal court and the Dalmatians in charge, no doubt.

Please enjoy:

The base of the cake had strawberries and cherries carefully worked into the cream and marzipan.

Please enjoy:

Kieran could not take his eyes away the immaculate piece of art before him.

Please enjoy:

It was probably meant for some party the next day.

Please enjoy:

Who would notice if it were to disappear?

Please enjoy:

Among the sea of other treats the nobles could enjoy,

Please enjoy:

it was no great loss.

Please enjoy:

The thought of all those selfish lords and ladies

Please enjoy:

frustrated and cake-less delighted him.

Please enjoy:

This black and white masterpiece

Please enjoy:

would be perfect for a black fox and a white weasel.

Please enjoy:

Surely, they didn’t deserve this treat.

Please enjoy:

Over the course of his career,

Please enjoy:

he had snuck, infiltrated,

Please enjoy:

impersonated, threatened,

Please enjoy:

bled, and killed in service of the crown.

Please enjoy:

He was definitely in due

Please enjoy:

for some cake. Having convinced himself that this theft was justified,

Please enjoy:

even noble, he lifted the glass casing.

Please enjoy:

This burglary was no longer a piece of cake,

Please enjoy:

it was the whole damned platter.

Please enjoy:

Carrying the cake might severely hamper his getaway,

Please enjoy:

but when he thought about Kit,

Please enjoy:

he found the courage he required.

Please enjoy:

Suddenly, he heard a noise,

Please enjoy:

and pressed low to the floor instinctively.

Please enjoy:

The clattering of metal came from outside,

Please enjoy:

and the guards were returning their rounds in reverse.

Please enjoy:

But he had known that,

Please enjoy:

they made the same rounds every night.

Please enjoy:

He’d anticipated them and

Please enjoy:

had planned to hide in the bakery,

Please enjoy:

waiting for them to pass before returning the way he came.

Please enjoy:

The noise he had heard came from inside the bakery.

Please enjoy:

His good ear perked to pick up an unmistakable creak.

Please enjoy:

The creak of a bed

Please enjoy:

which had contained a dormant rat,

Please enjoy:

and now didn’t. The stairs, which had been shrouded in darkness,

Please enjoy:

suddenly acquired a faint,

Please enjoy:

flickering glow. Another creak came,

Please enjoy:

from the floorboards above his head this time.

Please enjoy:

The fox realised there was no way he could hide in the little shop,

Please enjoy:

especially not from its owner,

Please enjoy:

not with his scent,

Please enjoy:

growing more marked

Please enjoy:

the more agitated he became.

Please enjoy:

It distinguished itself from all the other scents in this part of town,

Please enjoy:

as well as in this very shop.

Please enjoy:

Foxes were particularly unwelcome

Please enjoy:

in fine and respectable establishments

Please enjoy:

such as this one.

Please enjoy:

The creaks shifted from the floorboards to the stairs, and the clattering outside grew louder.

Please enjoy:

He had to act, quickly.

Please enjoy:

There was only one way.

Please enjoy:

He gripped the cake platter tightly,

Please enjoy:

shoved the door open with his hips,

Please enjoy:

and ran into the dark streets.

Please enjoy:

Behind him erupted the sharp and agitated voice

Please enjoy:

of the venerable rat as it called for the nearby guards.

Please enjoy:

The sounds of clattering breastplates sped up,

Please enjoy:

and came towards him, but Kieran had already reached a brisk sprint.

Please enjoy:

He could easily have outrun them on a normal night,

Please enjoy:

but Beer-breath carried a pistol,

Please enjoy:

Skunk carried a musket

Please enjoy:

and he carried a cake.

Please enjoy:

No matter how quick he could run,

Please enjoy:

he couldn’t run that quick.

Please enjoy:

If Kieran was seen…

Please enjoy:

well, He’d have to avoid being seen.

Please enjoy:

It would be awfully silly to die for some cake.

Please enjoy:

He soon realised his pace was not quick enough.

Please enjoy:

The rattling of the guard’s armours drew nearer with every passing second.

Please enjoy:

He escaped into another narrow side street, as narrow as the one he had come from.

Please enjoy:

He had bought himself some time with his head start,

Please enjoy:

but not enough. The fox had an ace up his sleeve, however.

Please enjoy:

A rare skill, honed to perfection

Please enjoy:

over years of experience and practice.

Please enjoy:

A skill which would allow him to escape with his life.

Please enjoy:

Possibly even with the cake.

Please enjoy:

He scanned the walls of the houses quickly as he ran,

Please enjoy:

and planned out his path of escape.

Please enjoy:

There was a way out that he could see,

Please enjoy:

it was just about doable.

Please enjoy:

He jumped onto one of the nearby windowsills,

Please enjoy:

lashing his tail to the side for balance,

Please enjoy:

before kicking away from it,

Please enjoy:

towards the opposite side of the street.

Please enjoy:

As soon as he found purchase on the top of the windowsill of an opposing shop front,

Please enjoy:

he kicked his powerful legs again.

Please enjoy:

Back across the street he went,

Please enjoy:

gaining more height still.

Please enjoy:

He managed to land on the wrong side of a first-floor balcony railing,

Please enjoy:

flipping the cake platter onto a single paw,

Please enjoy:

as the other one grasped for the wrought iron rails.

Please enjoy:

The cake wobbled precariously as he climbed onto,

Please enjoy:

and then sprang from the banister, but it remained on its platter,

Please enjoy:

even when the fox flew across the street yet again

Please enjoy:

to gain the second story balcony opposite.

Please enjoy:

He jumped from balcony to balcony,

Please enjoy:

building to building, higher and higher.

Please enjoy:

Around halfway to the top,

Please enjoy:

he picked up faint voices below.

Please enjoy:

His climb had gone slower than he’d anticipated.

Please enjoy:

How easy it must be to spot him,

Please enjoy:

and draw a bead on him, silhouetted as he was against the...

Please enjoy:

CRACK! A bullet whizzed past his good ear,

Please enjoy:

threatening to make him a no-eared fox.

Please enjoy:

Now that Skunk and Beer-Breath had stopped running,

Please enjoy:

they could fire at him without risk.

Please enjoy:

Without risk to anyone but the fox, of course.

Please enjoy:

“Come down here, thief!”

Please enjoy:

shouted Skunk through the puff of smoke he had released from his musket.

Please enjoy:

“It’s that one-eared fox again.

Please enjoy:

Hey, come down now, and we won’t not kill you!”

Please enjoy:

“We won’t?” “Quickly, shoot, you dumb brute!”

Please enjoy:

Skunk was reloading frantically, but not quick enough for a second shot.

Please enjoy:

The bear beside him had taken aim with his pistol.

Please enjoy:

Kieran leapt to the final balcony,

Please enjoy:

and prepared to vault across the street for the last time to gain the roof.

Please enjoy:

CRACK! The bullet sailed past,

Please enjoy:

missing the fox by inches.

Please enjoy:

Unfortunately, those very inches had been occupied by the canvas bag on his belt.

Please enjoy:

His haul leaked out from a large hole in the bottom,

Please enjoy:

and rained down onto the street below,

Please enjoy:

clattering harmlessly against the helmets of his two pursuers. “No!

Please enjoy:

No-no-no-no,” He groaned through gritted teeth.

Please enjoy:

Every single one of the sweet-smelling little marbles had been lost.

Please enjoy:

He still clung to the beautiful cake, however.

Please enjoy:

There was still hope. “Hah!”

Please enjoy:

Beer-Breath laughed.

Please enjoy:

“Got him.” “No, you didn’t,”Skunk chided,

Please enjoy:

“Unless you think he bleeds… What exactly?

Please enjoy:

Sweets? Why on earth?”

Please enjoy:

Kieran was already on top of the roofs,

Please enjoy:

his annoyance curtailed slightly

Please enjoy:

when he realised

Please enjoy:

the worst was over.

Please enjoy:

The loss of the sweets stung,

Please enjoy:

but he kept his focus on the real prize, which he’d somehow

Please enjoy:

managed to keep intact.

Please enjoy:

He could feel his excitement building.

Please enjoy:

The guards were far gone now,

Please enjoy:

he could make his way home.

Please enjoy:

He ran along the roof to its edge,

Please enjoy:

and sprung across the street to the next,

Please enjoy:

and then across another street to the next.

Please enjoy:

The tiles might as well be the paving stones

Please enjoy:

of a well-travelled high road,

Please enjoy:

considering how often he had run across them as a daily exercise routine.

Please enjoy:

He pointed his muzzle at the city wall,

Please enjoy:

and ran. When he reached the edge of the city,

Please enjoy:

he bounced across the last gap,

Please enjoy:

and gained the broad walkway of the city wall

Please enjoy:

with several feet to spare.

Please enjoy:

He stood back for a moment to admire his effort.

Please enjoy:

He went up to a nearby lit sconce on the wall,

Please enjoy:

studying the cake in the torchlight.

Please enjoy:

It was well shaped and

Please enjoy:

pristine, not a single crumb or berry had fallen from its immaculate form.

Please enjoy:

Kieran was good at what he did.

Please enjoy:

At its northernmost point, the city’s surrounding wall was broken by a gatehouse,

Please enjoy:

which stood opposite another gatehouse on the castle’s outer wall.

Please enjoy:

A drawbridge connected the two gatehouses

Please enjoy:

across a shallow moat.

Please enjoy:

The path was clear,

Please enjoy:

he was almost home.

Please enjoy:

He saw no flicker from the torches of patrolling guards.

Please enjoy:

Then he found that he hadn’t been as close as he’d first imagined.

Please enjoy:

The drawbridge had been raised while he’d been out.

Please enjoy:

The gatekeepers had again done what made the least amount of sense.

Please enjoy:

He had studied them for weeks, but never learned to interpret their random whims.

Please enjoy:

All those lonely days of looking at the same spot

Please enjoy:

must have made them quite eccentric.

Please enjoy:

So much so that they had suspended a single, narrow rope bridge between the tops of the two gatehouses.

Please enjoy:

Kieran was sure it existed mostly for the perverse and unfathomable pleasures of these strange guards,

Please enjoy:

rather than any wall patrol.

Please enjoy:

He hated this bridge.

Please enjoy:

It was impossible for him to feel confident

Please enjoy:

on the slippery wooden decking,

Please enjoy:

regardless of how he dug his claws in,

Please enjoy:

or planted his feet, or gripped with his paws.

Please enjoy:

But there was no other way across,

Please enjoy:

and he was ever so close.

Please enjoy:

The smell of the cake was constantly goading him on.

Please enjoy:

He stepped carefully

Please enjoy:

onto the bridge. Balancing his cake in one paw,

Please enjoy:

he gripped the rope tightly

Please enjoy:

as the bridge wobbled underneath him.

Please enjoy:

When he’d gotten half ways across without any problem,

Please enjoy:

he started to taste excitement on his tongue again.

Please enjoy:

Then, it happened.

Please enjoy:

A gust of wind blew

Please enjoy:

unexpected from the east,

Please enjoy:

and rocked the bridge suddenly.

Please enjoy:

Kieran felt his footing slip,

Please enjoy:

costing him what little that remained of his balance.

Please enjoy:

He saw himself as in slow motion,

Please enjoy:

teetering and staggering towards the edge.

Please enjoy:

Instinctively, he grasped for the ropes to save himself.

Please enjoy:

The cake flew into the air,

Please enjoy:

where it seemed to hang,

Please enjoy:

as if drifting gently on a breeze.

Please enjoy:

Kieran could only look helplessly on

Please enjoy:

as it plummeted away

Please enjoy:

and into the moat.

Please enjoy:

A small splash sealed its fate.

Please enjoy:

“NO!” Kieran cried, and the despair he felt was greater than he could have imagined.

Please enjoy:

It had been the most beautiful,

Please enjoy:

promising and evocatively potent thing

Please enjoy:

he’d ever held in his paws with his clothes on.

Please enjoy:

No protests would return that cake to him.

Please enjoy:

His ear flicked down,

Please enjoy:

and undiluted disappointment filled his thoughts.

Please enjoy:

He had been so close.

Please enjoy:

So close that he could have tasted it,

Please enjoy:

and yet there was not a crumb to be had.

Please enjoy:

It was as if the cake had never existed.

Please enjoy:

If he’d just spilled a little,

Please enjoy:

he might lick his paws of cream now.

Please enjoy:

He had been too good at what he did.

Please enjoy:

He padded across the bridge, down the gatehouse stairs and through the courtyard,

Please enjoy:

muttering and feeling sorry for himself.

Please enjoy:

The porter let him inside the servants entrance,

Please enjoy:

but he didn’t exchange familiar nods tonight.

Please enjoy:

He went through the kitchen without even thinking about skimming bacon for his supper.

Please enjoy:

He didn’t want supper.

Please enjoy:

How could he go back to regular food again, after seeing that cake?

Please enjoy:

He returned to his bedchamber, and curled up underneath his sheets.

Please enjoy:

The regret burned inside him long into the night.

Please enjoy:

All he wanted was a little morsel,

Please enjoy:

a tiny bite, Just the most minute piece of paradise that he could have to himself,

Please enjoy:

was that so damned much to ask?

Please enjoy:

He woke up the next morning

Please enjoy:

with a white weasel in his arms.

Please enjoy:

Kit must have come in during the night,

Please enjoy:

and wrapped himself around the little fox

Please enjoy:

for warmth and comfort

Please enjoy:

as he was wont to do.

Please enjoy:

His presence softened the reality,

Please enjoy:

as Kieran relived the last night’s events.

Please enjoy:

When he moved to get out of bed, he felt a warm paw around his wrist,

Please enjoy:

and his boyfriend looked back at him

Please enjoy:

with sleepy eyes.

Please enjoy:

“Hold on, fox…” “Really,

Please enjoy:

Kit? Now?” Kieran asked. “I have to get going.

Please enjoy:

Daily exercises, you know that.

Please enjoy:

I’ll be back in an hour if you still want to…”

Please enjoy:

Kieran flashed his grin

Please enjoy:

and winked knowingly to the weasel.

Please enjoy:

Not unusual for them to share a moment together before their work began,

Please enjoy:

and he wouldn’t mind a pick-me-up after last night’s events.

Please enjoy:

“Not what I meant,

Please enjoy:

today is special. I’ll fetch something,”

Please enjoy:

Kit murmured, crawling out of bed

Please enjoy:

and draping a morning gown over his bright white fur.

Please enjoy:

His short tail was wagging slightly,

Please enjoy:

and he had a clever glint in his sleepy eyes.

Please enjoy:

“There’s something you have to see.

Please enjoy:

A surprise.” Kieran sat back down on the mattress,

Please enjoy:

looking questioningly at his boyfriend as the little weasel exited.

Please enjoy:

The boy returned a little later,

Please enjoy:

with one of the saddest looks Kieran could ever remember seeing on him.

Please enjoy:

His tail didn’t wag,

Please enjoy:

his eyes didn’t glimmer.

Please enjoy:

His round ears were flat,

Please enjoy:

and his whiskers drooped.

Please enjoy:

He looked like he was about to cry.

Please enjoy:

“Kit!” Kieran exclaimed, rushing over to take the weasel in his arms,

Please enjoy:

but he had a bad feeling about it all.

Please enjoy:

There was something he was missing.

Please enjoy:

“What’s the matter, sweetheart.

Please enjoy:

Did someone bother you?”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, it’s terrible, Kieran.

Please enjoy:

It’s just awful.” “What’s happened?”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, Kieran…” Kit said, sniffling.

Please enjoy:

“It was meant to be a surprise.”

Please enjoy:

“Is this the surprise?

Please enjoy:

A sad weasel? That’s not what I wanted.”

Please enjoy:

Kieran murmured,

Please enjoy:

but Kit didn’t smile at his feeble joke.

Please enjoy:

“No, I mean… Well… You see…”

Please enjoy:

Kit hesitated, looking to his feet.

Please enjoy:

“Some days ago, I asked His Grace to place an order for a cake from Don Lazzaro,

Please enjoy:

the pastry chef, you know?

Please enjoy:

I spent all my savings on it.

Please enjoy:

But when I looked in the kitchens...

Please enjoy:

Someone must have thought it belonged to a noble, and taken it.

Please enjoy:

It’s gone. I’m sorry, fox.” “F

Please enjoy:

-for me?” Kieran swallowed.

Please enjoy:

Suddenly he felt dizzy.

Please enjoy:

He plunged down onto his mattress, still clutching the weasel,

Please enjoy:

completely lost for words.

Please enjoy:

He’d stolen that wonderful cake from his own boyfriend,

Please enjoy:

regardless of his initial motive.

Please enjoy:

Not only had he deprived the world of a nice and innocent cake,

Please enjoy:

but he’d taken the excitement and anticipation from his nice and innocent weasel,

Please enjoy:

replacing it with sadness.

Please enjoy:

Now he held his victim on his lap,

Please enjoy:

trying to comfort him.

Please enjoy:

But he couldn’t comfort himself.

Please enjoy:

“You always said you wanted to try something sweet,”

Please enjoy:

Kit murmured into Kieran’s chest.

Please enjoy:

“I felt bad, so I chanced to sneak something away from the kitchens.”

Please enjoy:

He dug around in a pocket

Please enjoy:

and pulled out something colourful.

Please enjoy:

“Happy anniversary, fox.

Please enjoy:

Two years, huh?” The weasel presented a few round, colourful shapes.

Please enjoy:

Kieran understood how much this had meant to the weasel.

Please enjoy:

If Kit was seen stealing, it would’ve been the end of his job as a prominent servant.

Please enjoy:

Kieran felt like he deserved a kick to the stomach,

Please enjoy:

not candy. He didn’t dare to taint that sweetness with the bitter sting of guilt.

Please enjoy:

“You didn’t have to,”

Please enjoy:

Kieran murmured ashamed.

Please enjoy:

“It’s the thought that counts, right?”

Please enjoy:

He couldn’t bring himself to eat the sweets, so he pocketed them.

Please enjoy:

Neither could he admit that he’d been the thief.

Please enjoy:

Not like this, not on their anniversary.

Please enjoy:

He would make it better again instead, whatever it took.

Please enjoy:

A few days later,

Please enjoy:

he finally had the time.

Please enjoy:

He made his way back to his crime scene.

Please enjoy:

Passing through the red door, which still carried faint traces of his scent,

Please enjoy:

he was met by a rat dressed in a white apron.

Please enjoy:

“Get out, boy. These pastries are for the castle.

Please enjoy:

Nothing here is for sale, especially not to you,”

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro said,

Please enjoy:

shaking a flour-covered fist at the fox.

Please enjoy:

Kieran wasn’t going anywhere.

Please enjoy:

He’d brought the rat all the wealth he owned,

Please enjoy:

almost half a year’s worth of his wages.

Please enjoy:

Even if had been enough,

Please enjoy:

it was no guarantee of his compliance.

Please enjoy:

“My pardons sir, a moment of your time?”

Please enjoy:

Kieran pleaded. He had his good ear splayed to the side,

Please enjoy:

and put the money on the rat’s counter.

Please enjoy:

“I’ve come to make things right,

Please enjoy:

and to apologize for…”

Please enjoy:

“You! That cake, it was you!” The rat shouted

Please enjoy:

when Kieran’s fox scent hit him.

Please enjoy:

He rounded the bench and advanced on the little fox,

Please enjoy:

rolling pin held high.

Please enjoy:

“Please don’t, sir.”

Please enjoy:

Kieran winced, drawing his lip back and covering his face with his paws.

Please enjoy:

An unsuitable reaction for a trained killer perhaps,

Please enjoy:

but the rat stopped in his tracks.

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro’s eyes travelled from the golden ruby signet ring on Kieran’s paw

Please enjoy:

to the two golden fangs in his muzzle.

Please enjoy:

He looked the fox up and down,

Please enjoy:

and chewed on his lip,

Please enjoy:

restraining his angry tone. “I see…

Please enjoy:

Speak on then, fox.

Please enjoy:

Make it quick.”

Please enjoy:

“Oh… The cake was meant for me.

Please enjoy:

It was a gift from my b…

Please enjoy:

from my partner,” Kieran mumbled,

Please enjoy:

“I came to pay for the damages, ask your forgiveness,

Please enjoy:

and to beg you to make that cake again.”

Please enjoy:

“You should be glad I don’t call the guards,”

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro said,

Please enjoy:

waving his money away.

Please enjoy:

“Don’t do that, please,

Please enjoy:

I want to make it up to you.”

Please enjoy:

He looked hesitantly to the rat. Would he have to beg? Should he get on his knees on this surprisingly dirty floor?

Please enjoy:

“Do you know how to make a cake, fox?” “N

Please enjoy:

-no sir, that’s why I’m…”

Please enjoy:

“Then you can’t make it up to me,”

Please enjoy:

The rat said and turned his back to him.

Please enjoy:

“The ingredients have already been consumed,

Please enjoy:

the labour undertaken,

Please enjoy:

and the artistry expended and exhausted.

Please enjoy:

I will not make a cake twice.”

Please enjoy:

“No… no-no-no, Please.”

Please enjoy:

Kieran pleaded, with a thin,

Please enjoy:

cracking voice. “I’ll…

Please enjoy:

I’ll clean your shop,

Please enjoy:

I’ll wash your pots and pans,

Please enjoy:

I’ll do whatever you want.

Please enjoy:

Please make that cake again, I beg you.”

Please enjoy:

The rat scratched his chin,

Please enjoy:

and looked meaningfully to a bucket and broom in the corner.

Please enjoy:

He looked back to Kieran, who was kneeling before him.

Please enjoy:

“You mean to say that you…”

Please enjoy:

The rat gestured at Kieran’s ring.

Please enjoy:

“You would clean the entire establishment of Don Lazzaro?

Please enjoy:

You would willingly spare Don Lazzaro of that burden?”

Please enjoy:

“I have scrubbed floors before,” Kieran said.

Please enjoy:

He would happily clean for the rest of his career,

Please enjoy:

if it would bring a smile back to his weasel.

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro seemed to hesitate.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t bake just for gold.

Please enjoy:

I have higher callings…

Please enjoy:

But, the world is owed another Don Lazzaro cake.

Please enjoy:

I’ll take your money for the inconvenience you have caused me already.

Please enjoy:

You will take the broom and the sponge,

Please enjoy:

and make yourself useful.”

Please enjoy:

The rat waved his paw at the broom and bucket in the corner.

Please enjoy:

Kieran got to work,

Please enjoy:

scrubbing every single floorboard with practiced care.

Please enjoy:

He cleaned every surface carefully, and took care of all of Don Lazzaro’s dishes, pots and pans.

Please enjoy:

He moved on to the rat’s private quarters where he scrubbed the floors

Please enjoy:

and cleaned the windows.

Please enjoy:

The work was tough and dirty,

Please enjoy:

and not suitable for a royal assassin,

Please enjoy:

but it was just what Kieran felt he deserved.

Please enjoy:

With every brush of the broom

Please enjoy:

and scrub of the sponge, he felt his guilt dissipate

Please enjoy:

and his hope rekindled.

Please enjoy:

Come afternoon, Kieran’s fur was matted with dough and dust,

Please enjoy:

and drenched in soap and water.

Please enjoy:

“I suppose there’s nothing more to wash but for yourself, fox.

Please enjoy:

You’ve done well today.

Please enjoy:

I wish more of your kin were like that.” Don Lazzaro brushed flour from his paws as he pushed the cake mould into the oven.

Please enjoy:

“Does that mean you’re satisfied?”

Please enjoy:

“I’d have been more satisfied if you’d not stolen from me in the first place,”

Please enjoy:

The rat mumbled, but he wasn’t angry anymore.

Please enjoy:

“But it is commendable that you came back to repent for your sins against the world,

Please enjoy:

God and Don Lazzaro.

Please enjoy:

I’ll remember you, fox,

Please enjoy:

I might allow you to buy a Don Lazzaro cake someday.”

Please enjoy:

“I’ll have to save up, sir,”

Please enjoy:

Kieran mumbled with poorly disguised shame.

Please enjoy:

“Maybe next year. Thankyou.”

Please enjoy:

As Kieran was picking clumps of dough from his fur,

Please enjoy:

the cake came out of the oven.

Please enjoy:

It’s heavenly aroma filled the kitchen

Please enjoy:

and threatened to put a smile on his muzzle.

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro filled the cooling cake with sweet jam.

Please enjoy:

He spread whipped cream across it

Please enjoy:

to create a white canvas, onto which he scattered blackberries to cover half the cake.

Please enjoy:

Though it was slanted and uneven,

Please enjoy:

it looked like its predecessor.

Please enjoy:

It was the most precious cake the fox had seen yet.

Please enjoy:

“Just one more thing, fox, before you take this cake.”

Please enjoy:

Don Lazzaro said and held out a finger to Kieran’s muzzle,

Please enjoy:

speaking in a low tone.

Please enjoy:

“This is the only cake that could be made on such short notice.

Please enjoy:

A true Don Lazzaro cake takes days to craft.

Please enjoy:

This one is hastily made, and though it will taste of heaven,

Please enjoy:

it is not a Don Lazzaro cake. Understand?” “I promise sir, not a single soul will see this cake,” Kieran lied. The weasel was out when Kieran found his way back

Please enjoy:

to the room.

Please enjoy:

He deposited the cake on his low table.

Please enjoy:

He put out plates for them both,

Please enjoy:

lit a candle, and poured two cups of claret from the bottle he’d been saving.

Please enjoy:

The weasel would be back soon

Please enjoy:

and there was going to be quite a surprise in store for him.

Please enjoy:

Kieran could hardly contain himself.

Please enjoy:

Seated on a chair by the table,

Please enjoy:

he wagged his tail rapidly against the chair legs

Please enjoy:

and licked his lips incessantly,

Please enjoy:

never for a moment removing his attention from his treasure.

Please enjoy:

His concentration was interrupted when a creak came from his door.

Please enjoy:

Kit entered the room,

Please enjoy:

tail first. It was wagging.

Please enjoy:

“Kieran, guess what?”

Please enjoy:

Kit asked over his shoulder,

Please enjoy:

he was holding something in his paws.

Please enjoy:

“His grace consented to replace the stolen cake.

Please enjoy:

It arrived this morning, but you were out, so I…”

Please enjoy:

Their eyes met as Kit turned.

Please enjoy:

For a moment they could only stand there staring at each other.

Please enjoy:

Both equally speechless.

Please enjoy:

Kit’s eyes travelled from the fox to the black and white cake on the table,

Please enjoy:

and Kieran’s eyes found

Please enjoy:

another cake in the weasel’s paws,

Please enjoy:

almost identical to the one he’d lost.

Please enjoy:

He blinked and rubbed his eyes, but there was no doubt.

Please enjoy:

There were two cakes in the room.

Please enjoy:

Kit smiled, and Kieran answered with his own.

Please enjoy:

“Happy anniversary, dear.”
