“Glorvan and the Cart”

Please enjoy:

by W.R. Frixmargen

Please enjoy:

I was disturbed one morning by the sound of wood cracking.

Please enjoy:

I hadn’t been particularly interested in the goings on outside my home as I was lingering in the pleasant glow of post meal satisfaction.

Please enjoy:

Curious as to the cause of the clamor, I left my home and found myself presented

Please enjoy:

with a view down the hill to the path

Please enjoy:

that ran by my place.

Please enjoy:

And on the path

Please enjoy:

was a cart. The cart looked tilted and had next to it a very irate looking fellow with antlers.

Please enjoy:

The cart was laden with boxes and

Please enjoy:

I guessed easily that the cause of the cart tilt

Please enjoy:

was the combination of heavy cargo and a particular bit of stone along the path.

Please enjoy:

The combination had clearly conspired to break the front axle of the cart the buck had been pulling along.

Please enjoy:

I decided returning inside would be rude and

Please enjoy:

so I casually approached the cart owner.

Please enjoy:

Knowing that I lived not far from the woods,

Please enjoy:

I did my best to look peaceful

Please enjoy:

in my intent and mannerisms.

Please enjoy:

Still, he seemed to jump slightly when he spotted me coming down the hill.

Please enjoy:

“You appear to have had some trouble,”

Please enjoy:

I told him. “Do you need any assistance?”

Please enjoy:

The buck stumbled back

Please enjoy:

and moved behind the cart

Please enjoy:

as he took his time to evaluate me.

Please enjoy:

“What do you want?”

Please enjoy:

he said in an accusatory tone.

Please enjoy:

“I heard a ruckus and figured you might need some help,”

Please enjoy:

I answered. The buck shook his head.

Please enjoy:

“I should be fine.

Please enjoy:

I don’t like taking help from strangers.”

Please enjoy:

I had paused not far from the cart. Close enough to see what was left of the front

Please enjoy:

axle. “You sure? That might take some time to fix without help,”

Please enjoy:

I pointed out. “I have some tools in my home.

Please enjoy:

I would be happy to lend them to you.”

Please enjoy:

“As I said, I don’t take help from strangers,”

Please enjoy:

he insisted before looking down at the boxes in the cart.

Please enjoy:

Now it would be easy to assume that he didn’t want my help because of the contents of his cart.

Please enjoy:

An easy assumption given his mannerisms and guarded attitude.

Please enjoy:

But I should remind you that the woods near my home back then were filled with all sorts of people and things hostile to those who worked the fields and lived in cities.

Please enjoy:

So even if there was reason for him to wish to avoid someone being near his cargo,

Please enjoy:

it was just as reasonable to think him worried about letting me near himself

Please enjoy:

as I could have easily been one of the bandits or blood lords or creeping creatures that lurk in the shadows of the trees

Please enjoy:

that he had no doubt heard about often enough by those who feared the forest.

Please enjoy:

I of course knew the forest was not nearly that unpleasant.

Please enjoy:

But speaking up about that at that moment, I figured was not a good decision to make.

Please enjoy:

Instead, I opted to let him work on fixing his cart.

Please enjoy:

But that didn’t mean I didn’t find myself a stump

Please enjoy:

not far away off

Please enjoy:

to sit upon and curl my tail around.

Please enjoy:

The perfect place

Please enjoy:

to start watching him

Please enjoy:

curiously. Once he saw that I was going to wait him out, he reached for one of the boxes in the cart.

Please enjoy:

He opened it and extracted a hatchet.

Please enjoy:

The metal was crude and the edge dull. But with a lot of effort

Please enjoy:

he could fell the right sort of tree to begin his repairs.

Please enjoy:

He looked at me, then up to my house, and then around the area.

Please enjoy:

The nearest tree,

Please enjoy:

a short, young, and with nearly a straight trunk, that might be suitable as a new axle

Please enjoy:

was a bit around the hill.

Please enjoy:

But still very much in view of my chosen stump.

Please enjoy:

He took a wide path around where I sat

Please enjoy:

and approached the tree.

Please enjoy:

“Any complaints if I take some wood?”

Please enjoy:

he asked, perhaps wondering if I was waiting for him to start chopping before I voiced my protest.

Please enjoy:

“That one should be fine,”

Please enjoy:

I answered. “Though it might take you some time to fell it with that poor hatchet of yours.

Please enjoy:

I can help with…” “No, no,

Please enjoy:

I’ll take care of this myself,”

Please enjoy:

he said. The buck lifted the hatchet and got to work. But he seemed quite eager to never turn his back on me.

Please enjoy:

I let him chop for a while.

Please enjoy:

His progress was painfully slow. But there was progress.

Please enjoy:

Not long before he looked about ready for the final go,

Please enjoy:

he took a pause to catch his breath and pull off his shirt.

Please enjoy:

“I can get you some water if you are feeling thirsty,”

Please enjoy:

I called over to him.

Please enjoy:

It was a warm day, and his labor wasn’t helping him keep cool at all.

Please enjoy:

“And you know… If you don’t like taking charity from strangers,

Please enjoy:

perhaps we can stop being strangers.”

Please enjoy:

He panted as he shot me an annoyed look.

Please enjoy:

“Why are you watching me?”

Please enjoy:

he asked. “Because it is right to help those in need.

Please enjoy:

And you appear to be in need,”

Please enjoy:

I said. “I can take care of my cart myself,”

Please enjoy:

he pointed out. “Perhaps.

Please enjoy:

But that’s not what I’m meaning,”

Please enjoy:

I retorted. The buck grunted and took another swing at the small tree.

Please enjoy:

A few more good whacks later and it was falling over.

Please enjoy:

He got to work removing the lower branches before making an estimate of

Please enjoy:

where he should chop off the top.

Please enjoy:

“I’m serious,” I said.

Please enjoy:

“You say you don’t accept help from strangers, and yet seem disinterested in making new friends.”

Please enjoy:

Not pausing his chopping,

Please enjoy:

he answered, “I don’t need new friends.”

Please enjoy:

“Acquaintances perhaps?”

Please enjoy:

I asked with a chuckle.

Please enjoy:

“People you know but who are not strangers?

Please enjoy:

Awareness of someone who will help you out if you are in need?”

Please enjoy:

He snorted and then began to laugh.

Please enjoy:

“There it is,” he called out before taking a couple more good swings,

Please enjoy:

breaking off the last of what he wouldn’t need from the felled tree.

Please enjoy:

“Help always comes with a price,”

Please enjoy:

he added after a few deep breaths.

Please enjoy:

“And I’m not interested in paying

Please enjoy:

for you to fix my cart.”

Please enjoy:

“Price?” I posed. “Explain.”

Please enjoy:

He pulled his gaze from the log before him

Please enjoy:

and looked at me.

Please enjoy:

His ears were perked and his eyes narrow.

Please enjoy:

“Are you some sort of fool or idiot?”

Please enjoy:

he asked me. “Are you?”

Please enjoy:

I answered back. “Because if you can’t explain, then maybe we both are.”

Please enjoy:

He reached down and grabbed the log.

Please enjoy:

As he dragged it back towards the cart, again going wide around my perch,

Please enjoy:

he gave his answer.

Please enjoy:

“Even at the most benign,

Please enjoy:

you’ll want me to help you in the future,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “I don’t like being in debt to people.

Please enjoy:

Especially weirdos like you.

Please enjoy:

At worst, you help me out and then demand I hand over my cart in payment. Or my things.

Please enjoy:

Or serve you for some days to months to years.

Please enjoy:

I have no interest in being under your command.”

Please enjoy:

“Command? Payment? I think you misunderstand my intentions,”

Please enjoy:

I explained. “I wish to see if I can help because you are someone who looks like they need help.

Please enjoy:

Or at the very least seems like they could use a rest.”

Please enjoy:

“I don’t need to lay down. I need to get home,”

Please enjoy:

he said as he dropped the log by the cart.

Please enjoy:

I watched him put the hatchet back in the opened box.

Please enjoy:

He then craned his head this way and that,

Please enjoy:

looking for something.

Please enjoy:

He closed that box and opened another, and still failed to find the next tool he was looking for.

Please enjoy:

He then looked up at me.

Please enjoy:

I had not moved from my perch since I had sat down, but I could tell in his eyes

Please enjoy:

that he had his doubts about that truth that he himself had observed.

Please enjoy:

And so the question the buck tossed me wasn’t too unexpected.

Please enjoy:

“Where did you put my hammer?”

Please enjoy:

“I have not touched your hammer,”

Please enjoy:

I answered honestly.

Please enjoy:

“Though I have one in my home that I’d be happy to let you borrow.”

Please enjoy:

“Seriously, where is it?”

Please enjoy:

he pressed. I leaned back and lifted my legs up in the air while putting my arms up high.

Please enjoy:

“Do you see it on my person?”

Please enjoy:

I asked. I put my limbs back down and bent forward

Please enjoy:

to lift up my tail for him to see as well.

Please enjoy:

It was lengthy, but not nearly long enough to reach all the way to the cart,

Please enjoy:

let alone open a box and lift a tool from the interior.

Please enjoy:

The buck began to circle the stump.

Please enjoy:

Still keeping his distance.

Please enjoy:

I let him walk around me, and did not turn to keep him in my gaze.

Please enjoy:

Instead I let him circle around that wide path

Please enjoy:

and return to my sight once more.

Please enjoy:

“Hammers don’t just walk off on their own,”

Please enjoy:

he pointed out. “I’d hope not,” I said. “Else I’d need to figure out a way to lure my own hammer back home each night.”

Please enjoy:

The buck put his hands on his hips.

Please enjoy:

“You are very strange,” he said.

Please enjoy:

“Ah, so you have figured out something about me,”

Please enjoy:

I said with a smile.

Please enjoy:

“I am happy to let you know m uch more about me if you so choose to get to know me.”

Please enjoy:

He huffed and went back to his cart to return to his searching.

Please enjoy:

“So you don’t want to be in anyone’s debt,”

Please enjoy:

I said as he continued to fail to find his hammer.

Please enjoy:

“Have you had a problem with debt before?”

Please enjoy:

“Why should I tell you?”

Please enjoy:

he answered, slamming his possession around as he grew more visibly agitated.

Please enjoy:

Instinctively he was even lowering his antlers in my general direction.

Please enjoy:

“To make conversation?

Please enjoy:

Plus it is decent to answer a question of curiosity.

Please enjoy:

And as someone who dislikes being beholden in such a manner myself,

Please enjoy:

perhaps I could offer some pointers in avoiding the pitfalls of manipulative and greedy furs

Please enjoy:

who like to keep people in their debt.”

Please enjoy:

He slammed the lid of the top box

Please enjoy:

and raised his eyes to me.

Please enjoy:

But only just enough so he could see me properly.

Please enjoy:

Those antlers were still lowered.

Please enjoy:

Though he couldn’t really rush me given he was on the far side of the cart,

Please enjoy:

the gesture was clear.

Please enjoy:

“To make conversation?”

Please enjoy:

he grunted out. “What nonsense is this?

Please enjoy:

What is your deal?

Please enjoy:

Why are you bothering me?”

Please enjoy:

It was my turn to let out an exasperated sigh.

Please enjoy:

“My deal is that I see someone in distress,

Please enjoy:

and can’t help but want to help.

Please enjoy:

Your cart is the obvious damage.

Please enjoy:

But it is clear that someone has hurt you.

Please enjoy:

And you don’t want to be hurt again.

Please enjoy:

Perhaps it isn’t a debt collector you worry about.

Please enjoy:

But a friend who betrayed you.

Please enjoy:

Or a lover who never thought to give back.

Please enjoy:

Or a family member who used your relation against you.

Please enjoy:

I don’t know, as you have decided

Please enjoy:

I should not know. And that is fine.

Please enjoy:

Some things are hard to say.”

Please enjoy:

He lowered his head.

Please enjoy:

But did not move or speak for a time.

Please enjoy:

I let him think. Or feel.

Please enjoy:

Or ease his tension. Or build it up once again.

Please enjoy:

Which path he took was not mine to decide.

Please enjoy:

It was the buck who had to choose how to proceed.

Please enjoy:

To take a risk to maybe start to heal,

Please enjoy:

to avoid pain, or to lash out. “None of those,”

Please enjoy:

he said after many minutes of just standing there.

Please enjoy:

“None of those.” I nodded.

Please enjoy:

“If you’d like to talk about it,

Please enjoy:

I’m ready to listen.

Please enjoy:

But if not, I understand.

Please enjoy:

Fear of the other,

Please enjoy:

it can be powerful,”

Please enjoy:

I said. “The causes of that fear can be legion,

Please enjoy:

or they can be singular.

Please enjoy:

And it is up to you to decide

Please enjoy:

if you want to end that fear

Please enjoy:

and to confront those causes,

Please enjoy:

or to let it continue to keep you isolated from the larger world.”

Please enjoy:

He lifted his head.

Please enjoy:

The buck was a fair bit off,

Please enjoy:

but with those antlers now raised, I could see clearly the tears on his cheeks.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t know if I’m for sure the one to help you through all that,”

Please enjoy:

I said. “But I would be willing to try.”

Please enjoy:

“It is just,” he stammered.

Please enjoy:

“It is just that, I,

Please enjoy:

well, I can’t.” “Can’t?”

Please enjoy:

I pressed. “I can’t risk being hurt.

Please enjoy:

Ever. I just can’t.

Please enjoy:

Because there’s always

Please enjoy:

someone out there trying to hurt me.

Please enjoy:

Or anyone they can get at.”

Please enjoy:

His words came slowly

Please enjoy:

as he was struggling to pronounce them clearly.

Please enjoy:

“And everyone who offers help,

Please enjoy:

they, they want something. Something obvious, or something not obvious and… I just can’t risk it. Ever.” I nodded. “I think I understand,”

Please enjoy:

I told the teary buck.

Please enjoy:

“You feel you live in a world full of those who would exploit you.

Please enjoy:

And that only those that exploit

Please enjoy:

ever offer you help.

Please enjoy:

And so you see me as one of those.

Please enjoy:

Someone who will demand something of you.

Please enjoy:

To make you in some ways

Please enjoy:

my slave. And me saying I have no interest in such, won’t be enough.

Please enjoy:

Because you’ve perhaps never had the chance to meet someone who is kind.”

Please enjoy:

“I, well,” he said trying to wipe the tears from his eyes.

Please enjoy:

“I guess it is like that.

Please enjoy:

Kindness is a lie.”

Please enjoy:

“Hardly,” I said. “It is useful for those who would abuse kindness

Please enjoy:

to keep those who are kind as far from each other as possible.

Please enjoy:

To keep people afraid

Please enjoy:

to offer and to share willingly without obligation

Please enjoy:

because it means

Please enjoy:

the high price they ask will keep those in need of help

Please enjoy:

away from their scam.

Please enjoy:

And so those who seek to keep you under their thumb,

Please enjoy:

they’ll tell you that kindness is a lie.

Please enjoy:

And will try to scare you away from those who would prove otherwise.”

Please enjoy:

“That seems, just like something someone who wants something would say,”

Please enjoy:

he grunted back. “Fine, how about this then,”

Please enjoy:

I said rising up from the stump.

Please enjoy:

“If you would accept no kindness because of unknown prices,

Please enjoy:

how about I give you a price for my help? To remove your doubt about my intentions

Please enjoy:

and make it clear,

Please enjoy:

totally clear, just how I’m going to hurt you?”

Please enjoy:

The buck was silent.

Please enjoy:

He glanced down at his cart, opened another one of the boxes, shuffled around inside it, and then closed the box again.

Please enjoy:

Finally he sighed

Please enjoy:

and said, “How much?”

Please enjoy:

“My price is this,”

Please enjoy:

I started. “If I fix your cart,

Please enjoy:

you need to never return here again until such time as you realize that

Please enjoy:

there are good people in the world,

Please enjoy:

and not everyone

Please enjoy:

wants to harm you.

Please enjoy:

That there are some of us

Please enjoy:

who actually want to do good.

Please enjoy:

Deal?” The buck eyes the log he had collected.

Please enjoy:

Then a rock just off the path.

Please enjoy:

No doubt wondering if he could just make something that would work as a hammer instead of dealing with me.

Please enjoy:

The buck then looked back at me,

Please enjoy:

snorted his annoyance, and said,

Please enjoy:

“Deal. If you fix my cart, I shall do as you ask and go away forever.”

Please enjoy:

“Ah, only go away forever until you learn that not everyone demands payment for their offers of help,”

Please enjoy:

I pressed. “Fine,” he grumbled.

Please enjoy:

And so I fixed his cart.

Please enjoy:

Though I did lament that I didn’t need the log he had collected to do it.

Please enjoy:

But I still made good use of it later as firewood.

Please enjoy:

After he realized the work was complete,

Please enjoy:

he silently grabbed the cart and began to push it away in a hurry,

Please enjoy:

grabbing his shirt as he passed where he had dropped it.

Please enjoy:

I nodded as he scurried away

Please enjoy:

and then returned to my home.

Please enjoy:

I saw the buck again three weeks later.

Please enjoy:

He even felt he owed me an apology.

Please enjoy:

But I turned it down,

Please enjoy:

telling him that I was just grateful to be able to help him out

Please enjoy:

when he was having a tough time of it.
