Speaker:Queer people and queer identities are drawn to the furry community for any number of reasons,
Speaker:but at the bottom of them is this.
Speaker:The furry community, the whole subculture,
Speaker:is based on a lifelong exercise in self-definition.
Speaker:We say “I am a tiger”
Speaker:or “I am a badger”
Speaker:or “I am a dog” and our friends accept it.
Speaker:And all LGBTQ+ rights are founded on the right
Speaker:to self-definition,
Speaker:that nobody may decide who I love,
Speaker:who I am, what I am,
Speaker:but me. Read by B.P. Rugger,

Speaker:Please enjoy “Fair and square”
Speaker:a poem by Madison Scott-Clary
Speaker:I bought my name fair and square;
Speaker:Bespoke, built from whole cloth.
Speaker:I wrote it again
Speaker:and again, Savoring every J,
Speaker:Skipping every fifth tittle, Until it felt right,
Speaker:Like sitting inside and watching the snow fall Through the window
Speaker:Or finding the perfect way that branches in two trees Line up with each other
Speaker:Or when the windshield wipers move In time with your music.
Speaker:I built myself fair and square With hands raw from coarse identity.
Speaker:I kneaded and pressed
Speaker:and squeezed, Savoring every curve,
Speaker:Skipping every tenth day,
Speaker:Until it all felt right,
Speaker:Like the sweet smell of
Speaker:pine bark Rubbed between fingers
Speaker:Or the whisper of maple leaves Under hurrying paws
Speaker:Or the perfect overlap
Speaker:of new buds Already sticky
Speaker:with sap. This was “Fair and square”
