“Endless Winter”

Please enjoy:

by J.S. Hawthorne “Ceri, wait up!”

Please enjoy:

The hare’s voice echoed through the snowy wasteland.

Please enjoy:

Cerialyn, the raccoon, stood atop a long ridge,

Please enjoy:

ankle deep in snow.

Please enjoy:

She leaned against the gnarled hazelwood staff,

Please enjoy:

squinting into the chill wind blowing off of the mountains.

Please enjoy:

Her ear twitched as the call echoed,

Please enjoy:

but she did not turn.

Please enjoy:

Snow floated down,

Please enjoy:

barely enough to be considered a flurry,

Please enjoy:

settling on the cloak,

Please enjoy:

made from the scaley white hide of some far-northern beast, she wore.

Please enjoy:

More dusted her long brown hair,

Please enjoy:

pulled back at the base of her neck

Please enjoy:

with a simple leather cord.

Please enjoy:

Trudging through the deep snow,

Please enjoy:

the hare, Teyli,

Please enjoy:

tugged on the reins of their pack beast,

Please enjoy:

a black and yellow lizard as tall at the shoulder at Teyli was,

Please enjoy:

and noticeably taller than Ceri.

Please enjoy:

The hare wore the same style of long cloak,

Please enjoy:

hood pulled up against the chill,

Please enjoy:

shadows hiding everything but her ruby-red eyes.

Please enjoy:

Where Ceri was dark-furred and,

Please enjoy:

even in the cloak,

Please enjoy:

stood out against the omnipresent snow,

Please enjoy:

Teyli was nearly invisible,

Please enjoy:

white fur blending in with white gloves and tunic

Please enjoy:

and even the silver and steel flash of the sword she wore at her hip.

Please enjoy:

“Ceri!” Teyli called again,

Please enjoy:

stopping at the bottom of the ridge and looking up.

Please enjoy:

Ceri’s long tail lashed at the snow several times before she turned.

Please enjoy:

“Would you wait up?”

Please enjoy:

Their eyes met and Teyli was once again struck by Ceri’s beauty.

Please enjoy:

The raccoon was fastidious about her grooming, and her

Please enjoy:

fur and hair were brushed until they nearly shined.

Please enjoy:

She was lithe but a little heavier than Teyli—in the hare’s

Please enjoy:

opinion the perfect body.

Please enjoy:

But more than anything,

Please enjoy:

Teyli had fallen in love

Please enjoy:

with Ceri’s eyes.

Please enjoy:

When they had first met, years before the Endless Winter had begun to blanket the land in snow and ice,

Please enjoy:

Ceri had had deep brown eyes,

Please enjoy:

liquid and full of emotion.

Please enjoy:

They were the sort of eyes that one could fall into.

Please enjoy:

Her left eye remained the same

Please enjoy:

but since she had graduated from the Academy,

Please enjoy:

a brilliant ring of orange light had surrounded her right iris,

Please enjoy:

like the corona of a solar eclipse.

Please enjoy:

If Teyli had fallen in love before,

Please enjoy:

it was a schoolyard crush.

Please enjoy:

After, it was the inevitable rush of tides washing her away in Ceri’s depthless,

Please enjoy:

burning gaze. Ceri waited at the top of the ridge,

Please enjoy:

leaning on her staff,

Please enjoy:

as Teyli led the beast up.

Please enjoy:

By the time the hare was halfway up,

Please enjoy:

she was panting as though she’d run a mile. Ceri, to Teyli’s satisfaction, had the grace to look mildly ashamed of herself.

Please enjoy:

“Sorry,” Ceri said,

Please enjoy:

reaching out a hand to help Teyli the last few steps.

Please enjoy:

“How’s the baby?” Unconsciously,

Please enjoy:

Teyli pressed a hand against the bulge of her stomach,

Please enjoy:

feeling the small, fragile life growing there.

Please enjoy:

“He’s fine,” Teyli said, smiling faintly.

Please enjoy:

“We’re both fine. You just need to slow down a little, okay?” Ceri sighed. “We should have stayed in Second’s Refuge until he was born.” Teyli intertwined her fingers with Ceri’s

Please enjoy:

and gave her hand a soft squeeze.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t want to wait, Ceri.

Please enjoy:

I don’t want him born to this,”

Please enjoy:

she waved her free hand over the snowy forest.

Please enjoy:

It had been two years since the snows had started to fall,

Please enjoy:

two years of hard,

Please enjoy:

unyielding winter.

Please enjoy:

Only magic kept crops growing, and food was getting scarce across the realm.

Please enjoy:

Two monarchs and a republic had risen and fell in that time,

Please enjoy:

and if nothing stopped the snows,

Please enjoy:

more would follow.

Please enjoy:

“He deserves a land of sunlight.”

Please enjoy:

Ceri smiled, her expression softening, as it always did, when she listened to Teyli talk about the future.

Please enjoy:

But still, she could not let the argument go.

Please enjoy:

“Someone else could solve it.

Please enjoy:

It doesn’t have to be us.”

Please enjoy:

“By which you mean it doesn’t have to be me?”

Please enjoy:

Teyli said shrewdly.

Please enjoy:

She took a step closer to Ceri,

Please enjoy:

close enough to feel the warmth of her body.

Please enjoy:

“But why shouldn’t it be

Please enjoy:

us?” Ceri knew that she had lost the argument,

Please enjoy:

but she knew she had lost it before Teyli had opened her mouth.

Please enjoy:

She released Teyli’s hand and fell into a hug,

Please enjoy:

her head resting on the hare’s shoulder.

Please enjoy:

Their arms wrapped around each other

Please enjoy:

and soon all the world was circumscribed by their cloaks.

Please enjoy:

Outside might be endless snow and unceasing winter,

Please enjoy:

but that did not matter to them

Please enjoy:

and to the tiny life that Teyli was nurturing.

Please enjoy:

When they finally broke apart,

Please enjoy:

the sun had jumped five degrees closer to the horizon.

Please enjoy:

They both blushed,

Please enjoy:

though no one was around to see them beyond the pack beast, which paid them little attention.

Please enjoy:

Instead, it was snuffling through the snow,

Please enjoy:

foraging for any tender grass that had managed to grow beneath.

Please enjoy:

“How much farther is it?” Teyli asked. The top of the ridge at which they stood

Please enjoy:

overlooked yet more forest and a clear mountain lake.

Please enjoy:

“Not far,” said Ceri,

Please enjoy:

pointing with the tip of her staff across the lake.

Please enjoy:

“We can rest for the night soon,

Please enjoy:

then reach the old temple tomorrow afternoon, I think.

Please enjoy:

Can you manage another few hours’ walking?”

Please enjoy:

“I think so,” Teyli said,

Please enjoy:

holding her hand out.

Please enjoy:

“If you don’t run off again.”

Please enjoy:

With a wry chuckle,

Please enjoy:

Ceri took the offered hand and then

Please enjoy:

led the way down the far side of the ridge.

Please enjoy:

They walked in silence for some time,

Please enjoy:

not just their own

Please enjoy:

but the silence of a world blanketed by snow.

Please enjoy:

At the bottom of the ridge, where the trees grew crowded and close together,

Please enjoy:

sound returned to the world.

Please enjoy:

Birds chirped and squawked and complained about a year with no spring or summer,

Please enjoy:

small woodland animals scampered across boughs, and their footsteps cracked against the forest floor.

Please enjoy:

Soon their voices returned to them, as well,

Please enjoy:

and they talked, discussing their hopes and fears,

Please enjoy:

the coming child, and what the world would look like when the winter finally cleared away. “Will we even still recognize it?” Teyli asked, to Ceri’s teasing laughter.

Please enjoy:

They camped on the shores of the lake.

Please enjoy:

Despite the perpetual winter chill,

Please enjoy:

some underground thermal heated the water just enough to prevent ice from forming more than paper-thin floes.

Please enjoy:

Life still flourished in the lake, and Teyli fished a couple of fat mountain charr for Ceri

Please enjoy:

while the raccoon foraged through the trees for whatever edibles she could find.

Please enjoy:

In the end, they settled around a small campfire with a feast of berries and nuts,

Please enjoy:

willow bark and fish.

Please enjoy:

Teyli even ate some of the charr,

Please enjoy:

at Ceri’s insistence.

Please enjoy:

She found the taste and texture unpleasant,

Please enjoy:

but even she recognized that raspberries and bark could only go so far.

Please enjoy:

The snow stopped at about the same time the last rays of the sun vanished into the night.

Please enjoy:

While Teyli laid out their quilted bedroll

Please enjoy:

—much more pleasant to share on top of the added warmth—Ceri walked a wide circle around their campfire,

Please enjoy:

scattering the leftover seeds from their dinner as she muttered spells.

Please enjoy:

In her footsteps, the snow melted away,

Please enjoy:

replaced with the first few shoots of new growth.

Please enjoy:

By the time she finished her circle,

Please enjoy:

the first seeds she had planted had sprouted into knee-high plants still growing.

Please enjoy:

Ceri stepped back into the circle,

Please enjoy:

the warmth of the campfire enhanced

Please enjoy:

and rebounded by the circle of magic.

Please enjoy:

With a satisfied smile,

Please enjoy:

she watched as the plants grew into a stubby hedge of blackberry,

Please enjoy:

raspberry, hazel, and hawthorn,

Please enjoy:

all mixed together.

Please enjoy:

The hedge stopped just shy of her shoulder,

Please enjoy:

though it might gain another inch or two overnight.

Please enjoy:

The magic would fade over time,

Please enjoy:

and eventually the plants, coerced to grow and intertwine,

Please enjoy:

would start to compete for the thin resources of this wintry world,

Please enjoy:

but even then enough power would remain in the soil to keep the strongest of the plants alive for years,

Please enjoy:

if need be. When Ceri pulled off her cloak and boots

Please enjoy:

to slide into the bedroll with Teyli,

Please enjoy:

the clouds had cleared,

Please enjoy:

giving both women a broad and starry sky under which to sleep.

Please enjoy:

The crescent moon hung low,

Please enjoy:

just brushing the tops of the trees as it prepared to set itself.

Please enjoy:

“Your doing?” Teyli asked as Ceri nestled in against her shoulder. Teyli no longer felt comfortable sleeping any way but on her back,

Please enjoy:

owing to the baby,

Please enjoy:

but she did not mind the way she had become Ceri’s pillow.

Please enjoy:

“No, just serendipity,” Ceri responded,

Please enjoy:

relaxing into Teyli’s arms.

Please enjoy:

One of Ceri’s hands drifted over Teyli’s bare stomach,

Please enjoy:

resting comfortably on the bulge of the child inside her.

Please enjoy:

“Can we do it, do you think?

Please enjoy:

Bring the warmth back?”

Please enjoy:

“If it’s what you want, my heart,”

Please enjoy:

Ceri murmured, her eyes already closed.

Please enjoy:

She felt cold against Teyli,

Please enjoy:

who reflexively hugged the raccoon a little closer.

Please enjoy:

It was, she knew, a side-effect of the magic she had spent creating the hedge that shielded them from prying eyes

Please enjoy:

and would provide food and shelter for any other travelers passing their way.

Please enjoy:

She had, over the past year,

Please enjoy:

created dozens, perhaps hundreds, of hedges just like this one,

Please enjoy:

stretching from town to town. Teyli worried at the toll it was taking on Ceri

Please enjoy:

—certainly the glow of the raccoon’s eye had more fire than it used to,

Please enjoy:

but who knew if that was related.

Please enjoy:

She wouldn’t say anything,

Please enjoy:

not unless the side-effects were more severe than a chill that caused her raccoon to press close in the night.

Please enjoy:

Ceri would stop,

Please enjoy:

certainly, out of respect for Teyli’s concerns,

Please enjoy:

but the good the hedges did and the pride that Ceri felt in creating them outweighed those concerns.

Please enjoy:

That, at least, is what Teyli told herself as she held Ceri close

Please enjoy:

and the two drifted off to a peaceful sleep. Teyli

Please enjoy:

woke to snow falling on her face.

Please enjoy:

It melted swiftly in the enchanted ring that Ceri had created,

Please enjoy:

but the hedge, now as tall as the raccoon,

Please enjoy:

was already covered in a clear inch of powder.

Please enjoy:

Ceri had barely moved all night

Please enjoy:

but had warmed up significantly.

Please enjoy:

Teyli told herself, as she did every morning,

Please enjoy:

that Ceri was as warm as she had been the previous morning,

Please enjoy:

and every morning before that.

Please enjoy:

She told herself that Ceri didn’t feel

Please enjoy:

just a hair colder,

Please enjoy:

like she was no longer warming all the way up.

Please enjoy:

They never talked in the mornings.

Please enjoy:

While Teyli packed up their belongings,

Please enjoy:

Ceri checked the spells she had cast the night before

Please enjoy:

and also picked food from the new-grown plants to eat on their walk.

Please enjoy:

It was not an uncomfortable silence,

Please enjoy:

but one born out of a deep understanding of each other

Please enjoy:

and a love that transcended words.

Please enjoy:

They set off as soon as the wan sun poked over the trees,

Please enjoy:

barely visible as a faint glow behind the endless storm clouds.

Please enjoy:

With her sword, Teyli cut a hole in the hedge big enough for them to step through

Please enjoy:

and back into the cold

Please enjoy:

of the Endless Winter.

Please enjoy:

Ceri pointed their way north along the edge of the lake,

Please enjoy:

heading into the rough foothills surrounding the highland mountains.

Please enjoy:

Snow flurried on and off all morning,

Please enjoy:

and a chill breeze blew down on them from the mountaintop.

Please enjoy:

They were both shivering by the time they stopped for lunch

Please enjoy:

and Teyli did not immediately realize something was wrong.

Please enjoy:

They ate in a quiet punctuated only by gusts of wind

Please enjoy:

or the soft crack of ice from the lake,

Please enjoy:

huddled together next to the small fire that Teyli had built.

Please enjoy:

The silence weighed on Teyli

Please enjoy:

—this was not the companionable stillness of their earlier walk,

Please enjoy:

but a pregnant emptiness full of a meaning she didn’t quite grasp.

Please enjoy:

Still, it wasn’t until they had stood and were moving again that Teyli understood that Ceri was flagging.

Please enjoy:

The raccoon leaned heavily on her staff,

Please enjoy:

cloak pulled tight and hood down.

Please enjoy:

She struggled to wade through the deep snow drifts,

Please enjoy:

dragging her feet.

Please enjoy:

“Ceri?” Teyli asked.

Please enjoy:

Ceri turned to respond,

Please enjoy:

missed her step, and sprawled face-first into a snow bank.

Please enjoy:

Dropping the reins of the pack beast, Teyli bounded over,

Please enjoy:

kneeling in the ice and slush and helping Ceri into a sitting position.

Please enjoy:

The raccoon was shivering violently.

Please enjoy:

“Something’s wrong,”

Please enjoy:

Ceri murmured, “Broken.”

Please enjoy:

“What?” Teyli asked, fighting off panic.

Please enjoy:

Ceri shook her head.

Please enjoy:

“Because of the magic yesterday?”

Please enjoy:

“Must be,” Ceri managed,

Please enjoy:

though her teeth were chattering so badly that Teyli could barely understand it.

Please enjoy:

“What do I do?” Teyli asked.

Please enjoy:

She had no magical skill herself

Please enjoy:

and her knowledge of magecraft was limited to what Ceri and a handful of other friends had taught her.

Please enjoy:

“Warm,” was all that Ceri could force out.

Please enjoy:

The raccoon curled up into a ball in her cloak, still shivering.

Please enjoy:

Teyli brought the pack beast around

Please enjoy:

and carefully hefted Ceri onto its broad,

Please enjoy:

warm back. She then went to work clearing a small camp of snow

Please enjoy:

and building a roaring hot fire,

Please enjoy:

sacrificing some of their stockpiled wood to avoid wasting time to forage.

Please enjoy:

Once the fire was going on its own,

Please enjoy:

she brought the pack beast over.

Please enjoy:

It laid down obligingly,

Please enjoy:

bringing Ceri within the warming radius of the flames.

Please enjoy:

It was an hour, during with Teyli made Ceri tea and broth

Please enjoy:

and huddled with her in the shelter of the pack beast,

Please enjoy:

before Ceri was sufficiently recovered to talk again.

Please enjoy:

“It’s like there’s a block,” she murmured into Teyli’s shoulder.

Please enjoy:

She no longer shivered,

Please enjoy:

but she still felt unnaturally cool to the touch.

Please enjoy:

“I couldn’t draw any magic from the earth or the sun,

Please enjoy:

so I’ve been drawing from me.”

Please enjoy:

“And now you have nothing left?”

Please enjoy:

Ceri nodded. “I shouldn’t have let you create all those campsites.

Please enjoy:

You should have told me.”

Please enjoy:

“I didn’t realize,”

Please enjoy:

Ceri protested. “I swear to you,

Please enjoy:

on my life and magic, Teyli, I didn’t know.

Please enjoy:

I would have done something to fix it before if I had realized.” Privately, Teyli thought that Ceri’s life and magic were both in distressingly short supply.

Please enjoy:

“Okay, so how do we fix it now?”

Please enjoy:

Ceri was quiet for so long

Please enjoy:

that Teyli began to worry that the raccoon had fallen unconscious.

Please enjoy:

Teyli was just on the verge of shaking her

Please enjoy:

when Ceri spoke,

Please enjoy:

“The Law of Summer.”

Please enjoy:

Teyli’s breath caught in her throat.

Please enjoy:

They had been hunting for the Law of Summer for three months.

Please enjoy:

A sacred and powerful talisman,

Please enjoy:

Ceri had explained that it could be used to push back the Endless Winter,

Please enjoy:

to blow away the snows and restore the cycle of the year.

Please enjoy:

“You mean?” Ceri nodded,

Please enjoy:

her eyes closed. “I think so.”

Please enjoy:

She had told Teyli that they were looking for an old temple,

Please enjoy:

an ancient place of power,

Please enjoy:

that might have a piece of the puzzle before them.

Please enjoy:

She had not, however, said that

Please enjoy:

it might be the whole key.

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry.” “Why didn’t you say anything?”

Please enjoy:

“I might have been wrong.”

Please enjoy:

She opened her eyes, and Teyli was alarmed to see the corona of fire was

Please enjoy:

dim and flickering in Ceri’s right eye.

Please enjoy:

“I might still be wrong.”

Please enjoy:

“Is there another option?”

Please enjoy:

Ceri hesitated, then shook her head.

Please enjoy:

“Not now. Teyli?” “My love?”

Please enjoy:

“I’m sorry.” She started to say more, but Teyli stopped her with a kiss and let it linger,

Please enjoy:

holding Ceri close to her.

Please enjoy:

She tried to let some of her warmth fill the raccoon,

Please enjoy:

to keep her safe and alive.

Please enjoy:

She did let Ceri know, wordlessly,

Please enjoy:

that no apology was necessary.

Please enjoy:

“I will be back as soon as I can,”

Please enjoy:

Teyli told the raccoon when they finally parted.

Please enjoy:

“Try to drink more of the tea,

Please enjoy:

try not to move if you can help it.”

Please enjoy:

She squeezed Ceri’s hand,

Please enjoy:

and Ceri responded with a soft smile. Teyli did not linger,

Please enjoy:

not willing to chance spending any more of Ceri’s time on her reluctance to leave.

Please enjoy:

She moved as swiftly as caution would allow.

Please enjoy:

She could afford no accidents.

Please enjoy:

A misstep, perhaps a headlong tumble into the dark waters of the half-frozen lake,

Please enjoy:

would mean more than her life.

Please enjoy:

It seemed beyond hope that Ceri might mount a rescue in the state she was in.

Please enjoy:

“Just you and me, little one,”

Please enjoy:

she murmured as she passed out of sight of the camp,

Please enjoy:

one hand resting on her stomach.

Please enjoy:

Her other rested on the pommel of her sword.

Please enjoy:

The temple ruins sat at the base of two mountains,

Please enjoy:

less than an hour’s hike from where Teyli had left Ceri.

Please enjoy:

It was in two parts:

Please enjoy:

a ramshackle courtyard that had poorly weathered centuries of elements and a forbidding ziggurat

Please enjoy:

that appeared as immobile and immutable as the mountains around it. Teyli had no problem climbing over the ruins of the courtyard.

Please enjoy:

The passage of ancient years had worn the fallen statues and masonry smooth

Please enjoy:

and the mountain cover kept the snows at bay.

Please enjoy:

The temple’s interior

Please enjoy:

was pitch black. Teyli fished a small glass jar filled with moon-water

Please enjoy:

and whispered the name of her one true love to it.

Please enjoy:

Instantly, it blazed to life with an orange light the same color as Ceri’s corona.

Please enjoy:

Holding the bottle aloft in her offhand,

Please enjoy:

Teyli drew her sword

Please enjoy:

and inched into the ageless pyramid.

Please enjoy:

The air inside was stale

Please enjoy:

and smelled of dead moss

Please enjoy:

and cold stone. The floor was slick with lichen and ghost grass

Please enjoy:

that had managed to cling to what little life and light was available inside the temple.

Please enjoy:

Huge ceremonial rooms

Please enjoy:

sat just off the main hallway,

Please enjoy:

but Teyli ignored those.

Please enjoy:

Her prize would be in the central chamber of the ziggurat

Please enjoy:

and she refused to be distracted.

Please enjoy:

She had just reached a set of interior doors twice as tall as she was

Please enjoy:

when she heard the voice.

Please enjoy:

It sounded like her father, someone she hadn’t thought of in years,

Please enjoy:

and the force of it caused the light of the moon-water to flicker like a candle.

Please enjoy:

“Little hare, what dost thou seek here?”

Please enjoy:

“Who are you?” Teyli demanded,

Please enjoy:

spinning in place to attempt to locate the source of the voice.

Please enjoy:

It seemed to resonate through the stones themselves.

Please enjoy:

“I am the voice of ancients.

Please enjoy:

What dost thou seek in these, our hallowed halls?”

Please enjoy:

Teyli swallowed.

Please enjoy:

“I seek the Law of Summer.”

Please enjoy:

“Such a prize is not for the asking, O mortal.

Please enjoy:

Art thou prepared for the trials that thou needs face?”

Please enjoy:

“I am.” “Wherefore dost thou seek the Law?”

Please enjoy:

“To save our world.”

Please enjoy:

“No. I will ask thee only twice more.”

Please enjoy:

The voice rumbled into silence like a passing thunderstorm.

Please enjoy:

Heart pounding, Teyli stood in silence,

Please enjoy:

staring into the darkness beyond the light of her moon-water.

Please enjoy:

She screamed when the doors behind her opened with an earthquake rumble,

Please enjoy:

jumping and spinning,

Please enjoy:

sword up and shaking in her hand.

Please enjoy:

Beyond the door was a huge amphitheater

Please enjoy:

filled with raised seats

Please enjoy:

surrounding a circular sand pit.

Please enjoy:

As she watched,

Please enjoy:

torches blazed to life with eerie blue and purple flames,

Please enjoy:

flooding the amphitheater with flickering shadows. Teyli kissed the bottle of moon-water to extinguish the light

Please enjoy:

and slid it back into her pocket before she strode forward,

Please enjoy:

head high and sword out.

Please enjoy:

The flickering torch-shadows seemed to fill the seats

Please enjoy:

like an audience,

Please enjoy:

a thousand amorphous shades all watching her descend to the pit.

Please enjoy:

She ignored them,

Please enjoy:

and the creeping feeling of being watched.

Please enjoy:

“Now what?” she called

Please enjoy:

once she had reached the sandy stage below.

Please enjoy:

In answer to her challenge,

Please enjoy:

the entire temple rumbled,

Please enjoy:

the ground bucking beneath her feet.

Please enjoy:

The sand rose into a pillar ten feet tall.

Please enjoy:

A mouth formed first,

Please enjoy:

opening into a gaping maw that roared while the sand fell away,

Please enjoy:

revealing a figure like a horse,

Please enjoy:

made of the amphitheater itself.

Please enjoy:

It held an axe as big as Teyli with a blade formed of fire.

Please enjoy:

The horse’s eyes were glowing black obsidian.

Please enjoy:

The sand-horse swept the axe up

Please enjoy:

and then brought it down over its head,

Please enjoy:

missing Teyli’s stomach by inches.

Please enjoy:

“My baby!” Teyli shouted,

Please enjoy:

bringing her own sword—so small and pitiful in comparison to the guardian

Please enjoy:

—up in a defensive posture.

Please enjoy:

The guardian paused,

Please enjoy:

glowering down at her,

Please enjoy:

snuffling at the air.

Please enjoy:

“The child is an innocent,”

Please enjoy:

it said in the voice of her father.

Please enjoy:

“Thou hast our word that no harm shall befall it

Please enjoy:

through our actions or inactions.” “What good is your

Please enjoy:

word?” demanded Teyli,

Please enjoy:

still holding her sword up.

Please enjoy:

“You attacked me without provocation.” “Thou hast

Please enjoy:

sought the treasure hidden within this sacred temple

Please enjoy:

with intention unknown

Please enjoy:

and proffer excuse and obfuscation.

Please enjoy:

By our laws, thou hast provoked the triple guardians and must bypass each.

Please enjoy:

Turn thou and retreat;

Please enjoy:

we will not stop thee.”

Please enjoy:

Teyli thought of Ceri.

Please enjoy:

“I can’t.” The horse hefted the axe once again. “Then

Please enjoy:

thou needs best me to proceed further.”

Please enjoy:

Without any additional warning,

Please enjoy:

it swung down, nearly splitting Teyli in half.

Please enjoy:

She slid out of the way at the last moment,

Please enjoy:

feeling the heat of the fiery blade as it whistled past her whiskers.

Please enjoy:

She whipped her sword around and into the horse’s knee as she ducked past it,

Please enjoy:

a strike that would have hamstrung a mortal opponent.

Please enjoy:

The horse stumbled and growled loud enough to shake the amphitheater

Please enjoy:

but did not fall.

Please enjoy:

The axe fell and struck the ground where Teyli’s foot had been less than a moment before,

Please enjoy:

sending up a spray of sand as she dashed forward,

Please enjoy:

driving her blade deep into the horse’s stomach.

Please enjoy:

Again, it snarled at her,

Please enjoy:

but it did not bleed

Please enjoy:

and would not die.

Please enjoy:

The third strike caught her in the arm,

Please enjoy:

cutting through her cloak and the padded leather of her armor,

Please enjoy:

drawing a thick line of blood.

Please enjoy:

She spun with the strike,

Please enjoy:

bringing the side of her blade up into the horse’s stomach.

Please enjoy:

It passed through with a shower of sand as Teyli rolled forward with the momentum of her attack.

Please enjoy:

The horse bellowed and turned,

Please enjoy:

its massive hooves slamming down on the pit

Please enjoy:

in small explosions of sand. Teyli held her ground as the creature advanced,

Please enjoy:

sword held steady in front of her.

Please enjoy:

It raised its axe over its head,

Please enjoy:

mouth open in a noisome roar,

Please enjoy:

prepared to split her in half.

Please enjoy:

She let the point of her blade drop as she stepped smoothly inside the horse’s reach,

Please enjoy:

then struck upward as the axe crashed down behind her.

Please enjoy:

Her sword bit deep into the horse’s side,

Please enjoy:

just under what would have been a ribcage

Please enjoy:

on a creature of flesh and blood.

She met no resistance,

Please enjoy:

her weapon sliding smoothly through the creature

Please enjoy:

and exiting its body where shoulder met neck.

Please enjoy:

The horse howled and then exploded into a whirlwind around her.

Please enjoy:

She covered her face with her arm,

Please enjoy:

eyes closed tight against the stinging barrage.

Please enjoy:

When she opened them,

Please enjoy:

the amphitheater was empty and quiet,

Please enjoy:

the strange torches burned low.

Please enjoy:

“Now what?” she repeated.

Please enjoy:

In response, a circular section of the floor melted down,

Please enjoy:

revealing a staircase leading into the darkness below.

Please enjoy:

Blue and purple flames popped into existence along the stairs,

Please enjoy:

illuminating the way downward.

Please enjoy:

“Wherefore dost thou seek the Law?”

Please enjoy:

the voice of the temple echoed from the depths.

Please enjoy:

“To save everything!”

Please enjoy:

Teyli shouted. “No,”

Please enjoy:

the temple responded.

Please enjoy:

“We will ask thee

Please enjoy:

but once more.” In the ringing silence that followed,

Please enjoy:

Teyli glared down into the staircase.

Please enjoy:

When the temple did not react she began to follow the stairs downward.

Please enjoy:

They spiraled deep into the earth with no break,

Please enjoy:

until Teyli was panting for breath,

Please enjoy:

her hand pressed against the cold stone wall to steady herself.

Please enjoy:

She did not know how long she walked,

Please enjoy:

but when she reached the end of the stairs, the air was

Please enjoy:

frigid and smelled of earth and

Please enjoy:

the old things that slumber

Please enjoy:

beneath it.

Please enjoy:

The room at the bottom of the stairs was not large

Please enjoy:

and lit fully by a torch in each corner.

Please enjoy:

At the far end from the stairs was a set of massive stone doors.

Please enjoy:

Teyli, her sword still in her hand,

Please enjoy:

crept closer to the doors.

Please enjoy:

Ancient writing blazed to life against the doors,

Please enjoy:

burning with that same blue-purple fire.

Please enjoy:

“I don’t speak that language,” she called out to the temple.

Please enjoy:

The temple boomed out at her,

Please enjoy:

its voice louder than it had been,

Please enjoy:

“Hear this and speak the password

Please enjoy:

or return whence thou came:

Please enjoy:

Drawn in light, cold mother.

Please enjoy:

Grows, fades and lives again.”

Please enjoy:

“What a terrible poem,” Teyli said, affronted.

Please enjoy:

“It doesn’t even rhyme.”

Please enjoy:

“Test not our patience, O mortal!”

Please enjoy:

the temple boomed.

Please enjoy:

“It is not our doing that thou didst not study the ancient languages!

Please enjoy:

In its original form, these lyrics wouldst have thee fall to thy knees and weep!”

Please enjoy:

“Yeah, yeah,” Teyli said.

Please enjoy:

“Could you please repeat the riddle?”

Please enjoy:

“Drawn in light, cold mother.

Please enjoy:

Grows, fades and lives again.” Teyli studied the door as she sheathed her sword,

Please enjoy:

though she kept one hand on the pommel.

Please enjoy:

The part about light

Please enjoy:

reminded her of the eerie torches that had lit the interior of the temple,

Please enjoy:

and she spent several fruitless minutes trying to connect the rest of the poem to those torches.

Please enjoy:

“May I ask you questions about the riddle?”

Please enjoy:

Teyli asked. The temple remained stubbornly silent.

Please enjoy:

“Fine,” she muttered,

Please enjoy:

releasing her sword to feel the swell of the child growing inside of her.

Please enjoy:

She was a mother,

Please enjoy:

but she didn’t think she was cold.

Please enjoy:

Her thoughts drifted to Ceri,

Please enjoy:

who undoubtedly was at risk of freezing,

Please enjoy:

and then it all clicked together.

Please enjoy:

“The moon!” she shouted.

Please enjoy:

“The answer is the moon!”

Please enjoy:

She groped at her pouch

Please enjoy:

and the small bottle of moon-water inside.

Please enjoy:

That was unnecessary:

Please enjoy:

as soon as she said “moon”

Please enjoy:

the doors began to swing silently open.

Please enjoy:

Beyond was a circular chamber carved from the living earth itself.

Please enjoy:

Two pedestals stood in the center,

Please enjoy:

a respectful distance from each other,

Please enjoy:

atop which floated two identical crystal prisms.

Please enjoy:

Both glowed sun-warm yellow,

Please enjoy:

and heat flowed forth

Please enjoy:

and into the room where Teyli still stood.

Please enjoy:

It was a summer heat,

Please enjoy:

humid and bursting with life,

Please enjoy:

smelling of honeysuckle and rose,

Please enjoy:

tasting of sea-salt air

Please enjoy:

and sun-warmed tomato and eggplant.

Please enjoy:

Teyli stepped into the chamber,

Please enjoy:

hand once again resting on her sword.

Please enjoy:

Sand erupted from the ground but,

Please enjoy:

instead of a new monster,

Please enjoy:

it resolved into two curving staircases,

Please enjoy:

each one reaching up to the top of one of the pedestals.

Please enjoy:

“Which one?” she demanded,

Please enjoy:

glancing back and forth between the two crystals.

Please enjoy:

“Wherefore dost thou seek the Law?”

Please enjoy:

the temple asked,

Please enjoy:

its voice soft, like a caress.

Please enjoy:

She felt its breath like sweet summer wind on her fur.

Please enjoy:

“To save…” Teyli started,

Please enjoy:

but her voice caught in her throat.

Please enjoy:

“To save Ceri.” The staircase on the left began to crumble back into sand.

Please enjoy:

The temple whispered to her again,

Please enjoy:

“Thou wilt not be able to save thy world if thou choose this path.”

Please enjoy:

“Can I save my world and my wife simultaneously?

Please enjoy:

Can the other crystal save both?”

Please enjoy:

“No.” “Then my choice is easy.”

Please enjoy:

The temple made no response as Teyli climbed the staircase on the right.

Please enjoy:

The crystal—The Law of Summer

Please enjoy:

—was barely four inches long

Please enjoy:

and its sunlight seemed wan and fleeting as she closed her hand around it.

Please enjoy:

The light went out in the other crystal simultaneously. Teyli watched as it sunk into the pedestal,

Please enjoy:

vanishing from sight.

Please enjoy:

She knew, without a doubt,

Please enjoy:

that they would not find any further aid in this place.

Please enjoy:

The Law of Summer was warm in her hand and provided all of the light she needed

Please enjoy:

to walk back the path she had come.

Please enjoy:

The torches were all extinguished,

Please enjoy:

the shadows gone.

Please enjoy:

The staircase vanished without a sound as soon as her paws touched the sand in the amphitheater.

Please enjoy:

She hesitated for a moment,

Please enjoy:

wondering if the horse would reappear,

Please enjoy:

but she was left alone.

Please enjoy:

The temple spoke to her

Please enjoy:

one last time as she traversed the hallway to the outside. “Teyli of the Seaside Moors,

know this:

thy child will be born in a land of snows

know this:

but shall not grow up there.

know this:

By his first birthday,

know this:

thou shalt have had three opportunities to end this winter

know this:

and restore this world to balance.”

know this:

“Will we succeed?” “That is up to thee, O mortal.

know this:

But yes, we believe thou shalt.

know this:

We foresee thy child happy

know this:

and safe in a world of plenty.”

know this:

“Thank you.” But there was no response.

know this:

The sun had dipped almost to the horizon

know this:

when Teyli reached the surface.

know this:

She tried to be careful,

know this:

but her anxiety over being gone from Ceri’s side for so long

know this:

had her dashing across the snow-filled landscape

know this:

within three strides of the temple’s entrance.

know this:

She reached their camp shortly after sunset.

know this:

Ceri was nearly frozen to the touch,

know this:

too cold even to shiver.

know this:

Without understanding what she was doing, or why,

know this:

Teyli pressed the Law of Summer against Ceri’s chest.

know this:

The raccoon gasped, her eyes

know this:

shooting open.

know this:

Her right eye blazed with light

know this:

then slowly subsided until just the corona shone,

know this:

brighter than before but not by much.

know this:

“You did it?” Ceri asked,

know this:

staring up at Teyli in awe.

know this:

Her hand touched her chest.

know this:

“I can feel it, Teyli,

know this:

like a sun inside of me.”

know this:

Teyli smiled and pulled Ceri close.

know this:

“Not quite, I’m afraid,” she said

know this:

when their kiss had ended.

know this:

She explained what she had seen

know this:

and what the temple had told her.

know this:

Ceri was silent for a long time,

know this:

her body, once again warm in Teyli’s grasp,

know this:

pressed close to the hare.

know this:

“I’m sorry,” she said finally.

know this:

“This is my fault.”

know this:

“No. You did a good thing, my love.

know this:

We made the winter a little less cold.”

know this:

She laid Ceri’s hand on her belly.

know this:

“Together, we’ll still fix this,

know this:

and he’ll grow up in summer.

know this:

This wasn’t the end, Ceri.

know this:

It’s still the beginning.”

know this:
