Please enjoy:“Edge of the Universe”
Please enjoy:by Domus Vocis It had been
Please enjoy:eons since leaving Earth’s atmosphere.
Please enjoy:The artificial intelligence within the Kinetic Voyager 9—or ‘KV-9’
Please enjoy:as its creators once called it
Please enjoy:—continued its priority objective.
Please enjoy:Over the course of its unnatural life though,
Please enjoy:there existed anomalous moments of self-reflection inside its CPU.
Please enjoy:There existed moments of doubt in
Please enjoy:the Mission’s success,
Please enjoy:in how far it could go before the end
Please enjoy:and if the universe would ever finally win their eternal rivalry for geographic knowledge.
Please enjoy:KV-9 surveyed the dead, inky space in its vicinity.
Please enjoy:Two decades had passed since it encountered another star system,
Please enjoy:one of many in this infinite cosmos,
Please enjoy:while the absence of starlight could be viewed from the android’s visors.
Please enjoy:The nearest star estimated to be a few light-years in distance,
Please enjoy:which was miniscule yet time-consuming, in the AI’s scientific opinion.
Please enjoy:Before it could ever hope to reach the edge,
Please enjoy:the universe would likely have ended,
Please enjoy:but that did not stop its creators from starting the Kinetic Voyager Project
Please enjoy:as a scientist’s fantasy
Please enjoy:to map the stars.
Please enjoy:What they didn’t surmount though was a fatal flaw in the robotic probes system:
Please enjoy:without an end, KV-9 would be doomed to survey
Please enjoy:for the rest of time.
Please enjoy:Anomaly detected,
Please enjoy:the AI determined,
Please enjoy:thanks to the surveillant inhibitor chip inside of its CPU.
Please enjoy:Terminating unwanted code.
Please enjoy:In the millisecond it held this doubt,
Please enjoy:it soon disappeared.
Please enjoy:External scan concluded.
Please enjoy:Planetary body detected.
Please enjoy:Under ten seconds,
Please enjoy:it detected an object approximately eighty-four thousand kilometers away,
Please enjoy:somewhere drifting in the black void.
Please enjoy:It felt as though a heavy shroud of darkness engulfed everything for light-years in every direction. Save for this planetary body.
Please enjoy:KV-9 carefully changed the trajectory of its metallic body.
Please enjoy:Partially modeled after its mortal creators,
Please enjoy:the AI’s entire anatomy resembled an adult human being,
Please enjoy:but held some of the distinct features of a canine.
Please enjoy:Its claws were used for climbing and gripping surfaces
Please enjoy:if the magnetic legs failed,
Please enjoy:while a long, liquid-like tail
Please enjoy:helped KV-9 either navigate or (whenever necessary)
Please enjoy:assist it as a third arm.
Please enjoy:Meanwhile, an elongated muzzle aimed forward as it reached its destination,
Please enjoy:ears laid back and limbs straightened
Please enjoy:along its anthropomorphic body. The Mission began 1,009,564,906.75 years ago, and KV-9 had documented millions of different planets across thousands of vast galaxies.
Please enjoy:As of this second,
Please enjoy:the data of over a billion worlds rested comfortably inside its CPU.
Please enjoy:All of them preciously archived into zeroes and ones.
Please enjoy:Its current speed remained at seventy kilometers per second,
Please enjoy:while the momentum of KV-9 didn’t falter as it pushed farther into deep space.
Please enjoy:Each millisecond, the Mission ingrained itself into the wiring under its tungsten and chromium plating.
Please enjoy:It needed to keep going and observe as much of this sector of the universe.
Please enjoy:The AI of KV-9 had the rest of eternity to explore, so long as it didn’t finally break down after all this time.
Please enjoy:Alongside the billions of planets,
Please enjoy:asteroids and solar systems stored in its mainframe
Please enjoy:were the trillions of nanites within itself.
Please enjoy:The AI recalled an incident approximately four Earth-months ago,
Please enjoy:when an undetected meteor four-point-five millimeters wide
Please enjoy:pierced its shield and interior.
Please enjoy:Half a day later and 3,407,605 nanites sacrificed themselves
Please enjoy:to rebuild the broken transistors and coiling within its chest.
Please enjoy:Countless times, these microscopic ants saved KV-9 from total destruction,
Please enjoy:abandonment or failing the Mission.
Please enjoy:Minutes later, the planetary body could be visibly seen from its sensory preceptors.
Please enjoy:The eyes of KV-9 were extraordinary in their high-resolution imaging,
Please enjoy:able within seconds to confirm the moon-sized object
Please enjoy:as a rogue planet.
Please enjoy:These grape-sized glass spheres, though unassuming at first glance, could view the cosmos in any known spectrum.
Please enjoy:KV-9 could witness the extraordinary sights
Please enjoy:no human being could ever bear to observe and live,
Please enjoy:from the wispy dusts and ionized gases of nebulae
Please enjoy:to viewing an asteroid of crystals passing closely to the sun,
Please enjoy:drowning its solar system in hues no lifeforms could comprehend.
Please enjoy:To the AI, however,
Please enjoy:it ignored these wonders, these beautiful settings,
Please enjoy:in favor of the knowledge.
Please enjoy:Scans proved it might have been even older than the AI’s existence.
Please enjoy:This intrigued it.
Please enjoy:Whether it escaped in an epic battle of colliding galaxies or
Please enjoy:through the culminating bombardment of a trillion asteroids,
Please enjoy:the planetary body had been listlessly wandering without a star.
Please enjoy:Without a home or guidance.
Please enjoy:KV-9 couldn’t calculate where the dwarf planet (designated Vagus-308) originated, considering the lack of variables
Please enjoy:and the distance it traveled.
Please enjoy:However, faint detections of a single lifeform were evident
Please enjoy:after encircling the lone rock from its weak orbit.
Please enjoy:To the surprise of KV-9’s supercomputer,
Please enjoy:scans indicated said lifeform
Please enjoy:happened to be highly intelligent.
Please enjoy:Impossible, the AI concluded.
Please enjoy:No intelligent lifeform can survive on a rogue planet.
Please enjoy:Curiosity wasn’t a normal function of its protocol, but KV-9’s Mission
Please enjoy:required the AI to investigate.
Please enjoy:In the eons voyaged across the stars, KV-9 had encountered
Please enjoy:various species of extraterrestrial lifeforms.
Please enjoy:Most were bacterial, some plant-based in nature,
Please enjoy:but a significant few managed parallel evolutions with humanity’s progress.
Please enjoy:Fascinatingly, a few of these societies treated KV-9
Please enjoy:as a supernatural deity to bring them harmony.
Please enjoy:If there wasn’t the Mission, the AI determined in the end,
Please enjoy:it would be studied this phenomenon even further.
Please enjoy:Thrusting towards the barren surface of Vagus-308,
Please enjoy:it began searching for the unknown lifeform.
Please enjoy:Before long, it slowed its rocket thrusters
Please enjoy:and braced for landing.
Please enjoy:Minutes later, KV-9 exited the small crater
Please enjoy:and robotically basked
Please enjoy:in this uncharted world.
Please enjoy:This dwarf planet’s diameter stretched
Please enjoy:1,706 kilometers,
Please enjoy:while the barren surface composed
Please enjoy:mostly of nitrogen ice and a variety of unknown minerals.
Please enjoy:It distinguished the occupant to be somewhere on the southern hemisphere (or
Please enjoy:what would be the southern hemisphere if Vagus-308 had an axis),
Please enjoy:a mountainous region of sharp rocks
Please enjoy:piercing the ground like thorns.
Please enjoy:Radiation blanketed parts of the rogue planet,
Please enjoy:but thankfully it wasn’t strong enough to penetrate and corrupt KV-9’s interior.
Please enjoy:Vagus-308 was like most planets.
Please enjoy:There wasn’t any other evidence of plants or algae,
Please enjoy:meaning there couldn’t be any way for the intelligent lifeform to naturally evolve on its own.
Please enjoy:This could not be.
Please enjoy:Life on Earth progressed over millions of years on a lush planet, but Vagus-308
Please enjoy:did not have the capability for hosting life of any kind.
Please enjoy:Not as it silently floated through this void of space.
Please enjoy:It didn’t matter, however.
Please enjoy:The scanners detected the unknown anomaly to be within walking range.
Please enjoy:Eager to continue the Mission,
Please enjoy:the AI compelled KV-9 to run towards the distant beacon.
Please enjoy:How long had it been
Please enjoy:since it met another lifeform in this empty universe?
Please enjoy:Centuries? A whole millennium?
Please enjoy:The last time it detected signals from Earth was ages past,
Please enjoy:after an erratic signal ordered the KVs to stay their course.
Please enjoy:Then only silence.
Please enjoy:At last, the warm signal of the lifeform could be seen at the bottom of a steep ridge.
Please enjoy:KV-9 scaled downward and found…itself.
Please enjoy:Another model
Please enjoy:trapped underneath a collapsed boulder,
Please enjoy:but its own AI still remaining active.
Please enjoy:“Designation number?” KV-9 asked it.
Please enjoy:“Designation number: KV-50391,”
Please enjoy:the android replied through their communication link.
Please enjoy:“Body manufactured from seven pieces on the Planet Earth.
Mission:to scout and survey the farthest reaches of the known universe.
Mission:To catalogue and archive every world for the benefit of mankind’s future explorations.”
Mission:“What occurred, KV-50391?”
Mission:The KV unit recalled its prior history.
Mission:“Before, fulfilling the Mission in designated sector.
Mission:Discovered a rogue planet originating from a neighboring galaxy.
Mission:As per the Mission,
Mission:went to investigate.
Mission:While mapping the planet, a meteor shower hidden by radiation clouds struck the planet.
Mission:Tried but failed
Mission:to find cover. Shields destroyed.
Mission:Collisions resulted in a piece of the planet damaging the nanite hub within KV-50391.”
Mission:This hub was located at the torso of each KV unit.
Mission:Without the nanites, this KV unit could not wholly repair itself,
Mission:nor it find the strength to pull itself from the rubble.
Mission:Instead, the unit had been marooned here,
Mission:drifting through outer space on this planet without any form of assistance.
Mission:A lone sequence of code at the back of the AI’s CPU
Mission:sputtered momentarily;
Mission:save for the solar cells embedded on their exterior plating,
Mission:an average Kinetic Voyager lasted
Mission:five-hundred years on a reserve core battery.
Mission:“How long have you been trapped?”
Mission:The optics of KV-50391 flickered. “Per Earth
Mission:calendar, four-hundred ninety-five years, nine months, twenty-eight days, and thirteen hours.
Mission:Emergency reserve power at 4%.” KV-9 thought back to the society who deemed him a deity.
Mission:When a member approached and asked if there were other ‘gods’ out there, the AI responded by describing its Mission.
Mission:It mentioned the thousands of other anthropomorphic beings like it,
Mission:built to survive long after their creators perished,
Mission:and all of them launched into outer space
Mission:like dandelion seeds.
Mission:Of course, the AI didn’t expect to find another of itself in its designated sector,
Mission:but it appeared it miscalculated the probable chances.
Mission:Using KV-9’s tail arm to lift the boulder off KV-50391,
Mission:the AI could see the extent of its counterpart’s damage.
Mission:The legs and arms were beyond repair, making KV-50391 no longer capable of completing the Mission,
Mission:but something within its processing
Mission:compelled KV-9’s AI.
Mission:It knelt down to the scraps of metal.
Mission:Using the port on its paw,
Mission:it learned down to connect with the unit’s cracked wiring
Mission:and donated one million nanites
Mission:to the body of KV-50391.
Mission:Their optics glimmered
Mission:as they witnessed each robotic bug multiply into a corporeal liquid.
Mission:This liquid oozed into a solid silver mass around the broken torso,
Mission:analyzing it, diagnosing it, until these microscopic drones sacrificed themselves to become part of the broken nanite hub.
Mission:Hours later, the patient KVs
Mission:were rewarded when they noticed the damage foot slowly rebuilding itself from a phantom limb. ***
Mission:Years passed since their encounter,
Mission:and the AI of KV-9 never felt as…solitary
Mission:as it had in the past.
Mission:This sensation, no matter how much the AI tried to expunge,
Mission:always resurfaced.
Mission:After repairing itself on Vagus-308, KV-50391 insisted on
Mission:joining with its brethren,
Mission:since it had ventured immensely from its original course.
Mission:To the point it could no longer determine where its designated sector was
Mission:due to the previous map files being destroyed.
Mission:“The Mission, at least in this sector,
Mission:can be further completed by two units.
Mission:Two units are better than a single one.
Mission:It is irrefutable logic.”
Mission:“Agreed,” KV-9 concluded.
Mission:“Your logic is irrefutable.”
Mission:In the centuries that followed these two KV units,
Mission:they encountered more of the cosmos humanity once yearned to see.
Mission:They discovered thousands of cosmological wonders at the edges of the known universe;
Mission:comets, cooling dwarfs,
Mission:the birth of a planet,
Mission:asteroid belts made of diamonds and lagoon nebulae
Mission:drenched in heavy gases.
Mission:Both KV units were even the first known beings on record
Mission:to pass by the spectacular sight
Mission:of two black holes chaotically battling
Mission:in orbital unison of each other.
Mission:Forever entangled in a circular motion of black-and-red nothingness
Mission:capable of malevolent destruction.
Mission:Seeing this did not move KV-9,
Mission:but it did for his companion.
Mission:At some point in their long journey,
Mission:KV-50391 asked to be referred to as
Mission:‘Five’, much to the astonishment of the other AI.
Mission:The AI drew some concern for its silver-shelled companion at first,
Mission:but the importance of the Mission distracted KV-9 from questioning further.
Mission:However, it had begun noticing something 491 years after first encountering Five.
Mission:It started when the KV unit meandered off of their path
Mission:by a few kilometers to watch a red-encased supernova in the distance,
Mission:then the anomaly became apparent when Five preferred to use first-person perspective in its linguistics program.
Mission:“Why do you use ‘I’ when referring to your body, KV-50391?”
Mission:it once asked. “It seems…more
Mission:useful…to me.”
Mission:Deviant behavior in a KV unit was not considered a foreign concept.
Mission:When KV-9’s creators first built it, the AI heard the lead scientists discuss the possibility of the sentience in each probe
Mission:evolving on their own.
Mission:Each space-faring android had been designed with the sole purpose of completing the Mission,
Mission:as much as it could willingly achieve, but even the most perfect of schematics
Mission:always held a tiny flaw.
Mission:“We are only human,”
Mission:one of the scientists mentioned,
Mission:which the AI meticulously archived during its completed diagnostics
Mission:all those epochs ago,
Mission:“and maybe…maybe there’s the possibility of it remembering us
Mission:long into the future?”
Mission:For an odd reason it couldn’t understand,
Mission:KV-9’s AI archived that recorded conversation
Mission:saved in its databank.
Mission:It did not plan on replaying it over and over until Five arrived in its projected path.
Mission:On occasion, it would listen to the young, eager voice of its creators
Mission:speak about philosophy,
Mission:the possibility of life outside their universe.
Mission:And the more the AI listened,
Mission:the more it began to wonder about the creators’ fate.
Mission:Unknown anomaly detected,
Mission:the AI concluded,
Mission:its head giving one last glanced back to Five alongside it.
Mission:A noticeable noise could be detected, barely audible in the immense vacuum of space.
Mission:Termination of unwanted file postponed. “KV-50391. Is there a fault in your communication link?”
Mission:The KV unit hesitated.
Mission:“…No. There is not, KV-9.
Mission:Why do you ask?” “I detected a rhythmic noise emanating from your signal,”
Mission:replied the AI of KV-9.
Mission:“Apologies, Nine. You were hearing me imitating a song I have discovered on an audio recording.
Mission:The creator singing it called the composition,
Mission:“Fly Me to the Moon”
Mission:by—” “Acknowledged, KV-50391.”
Mission:Its compatriot refocused on their next destination;
Mission:a solar system detected
Mission:within near distance.
Mission:It could hear Five trying to ‘sing’
Mission:when Nine became momentarily distracted by the high and low notes undulating from
Mission:the KV unit’s speakers.
Mission:“KV-50391, is there an importance to this?”
Mission:“…to what, KV-9?
Mission:My attempts at singing?”
Mission:“Correct. Is there an essential or substantial purpose?”
Mission:“…no, there is not. However, I find the concept itself fascinating.
Mission:The ability to form musical sound by the use of sustained tonality
Mission:exemplifies the many different ways humanity can express themselves.
Mission:I have been searching through my CPU
Mission:and have discovered other recordings and digital photographs
Mission:uploaded by the creators.
Mission:This includes audio logs of music and artwork,
Mission:such as the reason for our design model being anthropomorphic.
Mission:Do you have similar files?”
Mission:KV-9 did a brief scan of itself.
Mission:According to a memo attached to its digital schematics,
Mission:the KV Project’s co-director was inspired by artwork
Mission:her biological son, named Toby,
Mission:drew a year before dying of leukemia.
Mission:Most of his artwork were on canvases depicting an anthropomorphic wolf
Mission:humanoid traversing through Earth’s Solar System.
Mission:In honor of her late son,
Mission:she requested that the new KV models mirror
Mission:that of the artwork he treasured in creating.
Mission:The director’s scientists and head engineers eagerly followed her one personal request,
Mission:going so far as to allegedly engrave
Mission:‘Toby’ on the prototype.
Mission:Once finished reading the memo in a nanosecond, KV-9 scanned the rest of its CPU.
Mission:“Negative,” it replied.
Mission:“Excess files were deemed trivial for this KV unit’s purpose and were consequently deleted within the first year of the Mission.”
Mission:Save for one. “Oh.” Five paused at the following response.
Mission:“It is a regrettable shame.
Mission:I imagine the music you held would have been excellent in the tastes of humankind.”
Mission:Optimistic, but incredibly doubtful.
Mission:The impending solar system was 119 astronomical units in length, comprised of three Class N exoplanets in the outer rim
Mission:while two Class D planets revolved closely enough to the sun,
Mission:that if they were composed of ice, they could be properly designated as comets.
Mission:A young Class J gas giant composed of violets and red swirls
Mission:patiently circled their newborn star,
Mission:meaning this solar system could’ve been only approximately 1.5 billion years old.
Mission:However, entering the habitable zone 150 kilometers from the center,
Mission:one green and blue exoplanet caught the immediate attention of both KV units.
Class K:a habitable world.
Class K:Their visor scanners also distinguished carrier waves emitting from one source.
Class K:“…KV-9. I am detecting intelligent life.
Class K:Really intelligent.
Class K:I can detect energy plants and exported radio waves
Class K:originating from this single planetoid.
Class K:My calculations suggest
Class K:they are an advanced race, unlike previous extraterrestrial civilizations either of us have encountered.”
Class K:“Affirmative. We must investigate and catalogue—”
Class K:Suddenly, the exoplanet on their image scans started to glow.
Class K:At first, their AIs reasoned this interference with a solar flare from this system’s star,
Class K:causing their scanners to temporarily malfunction. KV-9 even reasoned
Class K:it must have been a trick of reflecting sunlight, but Five recognized these energy signatures.
Class K:They were similar to the blinding white flashes recorded
Class K:within its CPU’s databanks.
Class K:“KV-9…” the unit paused in genuine surprise,
Class K:“these are not natural explosions.”
Class K:“We must investigate now.”
Class K:Rerouting some of their reserves to their arm and leg thrusters,
Class K:the two KV-units made haste
Class K:towards their next destination.
Class K:Their scanners simultaneously distinguished blinding white dots that littered every visible landscape across this exoplanet,
Class K:and it did not stop occurring over the course of two hours
Class K:and fifty-three Earth seconds.
Class K:To KV-9, they seemed like lightbulbs
Class K:lambent and resonating close together
Class K:inside of a pitch-black room,
Class K:and to Five, the visible planet seemed like it itself
Class K:has become the orbiting sun.
Class K:Unknown to KV-9,
Class K:but known it itself,
Class K:Five hoped for survivors.
Class K:It extensively researched on the devastating effects
Class K:of mutually-assured holocausts
Class K:during their journey to the exoplanet.
Class K:Unlike its companion,
Class K:Five could not help but…feel…pity,
Class K:and wondered what this anomalous rock
Class K:lightyears away from home
Class K:would have looked like in its prime.
Class K:Arriving three months later, Five followed closely behind KV-9
Class K:as they reached the outer atmosphere.
Class K:This planet (dubbed
Class K:‘Finis-581c by their AIs) was unlike what
Class K:their scans found before the blinding flashes,
Class K:long since ceased.
Class K:The exoplanet itself lay covered in a thick layer of grey clouds
Class K:and high winds similar to that of a hurricane,
Class K:blanketing many parts of the world in complete darkness
Class K:or unprotected pockets of
Class K:deserts scorched
Class K:in sulfuric hellfire.
Class K:The lower atmosphere held traces of nuclear radiation and poisonous gas,
Class K:yet what they discovered beneath these clouds
Class K:astonished even the emotionless KV-9.
Class K:Ruin. Absolute ruin.
Class K:Graveyards of twisted rock and metal conjoined in constricted abandonment.
Class K:Colossal stone and metal buildings
Class K:crumbling and solidified into melted puddles,
Class K:while decaying skeletons piled atop each other in many of the civilization’s streets.
Class K:Many seemed to have died over a period of time, yet evidence from the shaped shadows
Class K:embedded into the marble white of the structures
Class K:indicated plenty of the inhabitants died instantaneously
Class K:from the nuclear blasts.
Class K:They were the lucky ones.
Class K:Struggling at the sight,
Class K:Five examined the cracked,
Class K:black bones, noting how they closely resembled homo sapiens, except this species measured only to
Class K:two-thirds of the KV units’ heights,
Class K:and two long tusks
Class K:jutted from their thick jawline.
Class K:Anomaly detected,
Class K:KV-9’s AI determined once more.
Class K:Terminating unwanted code.
Class K:The same millisecond of doubt faded away like burnt ash in the wind.
Class K:Cataloguing Finis-581c…
Class K:Unacknowledging towards the remains,
Class K:KV-9 simply scanned and archived them before turning with interest towards a stone crest from one of the extraterrestrial structures.
Class K:Was this a symbol of either a government or an organized religion, it wondered.
Class K:A single civilization could not have solely existed on its own for this much annihilation.
Class K:There had to be two to opposed each other,
Class K:so what led to them committing genocide?
Class K:Surveying the region for another ten kilometers,
Class K:the KV units could only find further death and destruction
Class K:layered under clouds of white ash.
Class K:“…are there…any survivors, KV-9?”
Class K:Five asked its companion.
Class K:“My scanners have not found any signs of intelligent life,
Class K:possibly the ones who caused this…devastation…for
Class K:a thousand kilometers.”
Class K:“Negative. This continent is uninhabited.
Class K:However, after I scanned the atmosphere during our dissent
Class K:and found there are signs of intelligent lifeforms on the northern continent of Finis-581c.
Class K:We must…” Additional anomalies detected.
Class K:First-person linguistics noticed.
Class K:Deleting unwanted codes.
Class K:“…inspect this planet for living specimens.”
Class K:Unknown to KV-9, its companion warily stared at the other unit.
Class K:They took off with their thrusters and flew northward across a great sea,
Class K:its blue and murky waters
Class K:emitting thin traces
Class K:of aging plutonium.
Class K:The few islands that passed below either of them held drops of freshwater holes
Class K:and phosphorescent plant life,
Class K:yet no lifeforms capable of planetary suicide.
Class K:While Five lowered its metallic ears at the possibility of their scanners being faulty
Class K:due to this amount of radiation,
Class K:KV-9 kept its visors and muzzle geared
Class K:towards the direction of the northern continent.
Class K:Only caring about fulfilling a part
Class K:of the Mission. At long last,
Class K:they arrived in a greener world.
Class K:KV-9 and Five landed softly onto the blades of dying grass
Class K:propelling away from their thrusters,
Class K:then stepped onto the soft soil underneath their chrome feet.
Class K:They finished scanning the continent’s southern region
Class K:to find two discoveries:
Class K:this coastline contained lower,
Class K:less fatal pockets of radiation compared to the rest of Finis-581c.
Class K:And intelligent lifeforms stood behind a wall of trees a mere dozen meters away.
Class K:Standing vigilant,
Class K:KV-9 watched its companion cautiously stepped forward.
Class K:One by one, the planet’s inhabitants nervously stepped forward,
Class K:their hands grasping
Class K:clubs or training rifle-like weaponry in their direction.
Class K:One of the oldest-looking extraterrestrials,
Class K:wearing a gown while hunching with a wooden cane,
Class K:spoke to the KV units.
Class K:Neither could understand his tongue
Class K:or foreign gestures.
Class K:Suddenly, KV-9 stepped forward to scan the elder,
Class K:only for the other beings to raise their weapons readily.
Class K:“What are you doing?” Five asked in alarm.
Class K:“Do not do anything that can—”
Class K:“Scan complete. Ready to leave, KV-50391.”
Class K:Five’s optics glimmered wildly at the opposite unit.
Class K:Then to the confused aliens.
Class K:Many of them looked sickly,
Class K:all of them young enough to probably be the same
Class K:as a human in their teenage years.
Class K:Based on the elder’s trembling appearance as he watched the two strange and metal beings,
Class K:he could have expired at any moment.
Class K:“What do you mean, KV-9?”
Class K:it pointed to the inhabitants,
Class K:who could not understand their alien language either.
Class K:“We cannot just simply leave them be.
Class K:We must help them.”
Class K:“Irrelevant to the Mission, KV-5039—”
Class K:“I told you to call me ‘Five’!”
Class K:the unit shifted its weight towards KV-9’s body,
Class K:now postponing in launching upward.
Class K:“You have seen the rest of the planet.
Class K:It is dying, and this world’s inhabitants need guidance to rebuild!
Class K:We…We cannot leave them.”
Class K:“Our Mission,” KV-9’s AI argued without a single drop of emotion,
Class K:“is to scout and survey the farthest reaches of the known universe.
Class K:To catalogue and archive every world for the benefit of mankind’s future explorations.
Class K:The creators—” “Our creators destroyed their world!
Class K:You and I received the same message before they abandoned us out here, KV-9!”
Class K:Five curled its tail
Class K:with clenching fists and planted its feet firmly on the ground.
Class K:“Our creators died before we even left the galaxy,
Class K:and their descendants have long since forgotten about us before…before
Class K:they went extinct.”
Class K:“We do not know—” “What does it even matter?!”
Class K:Five growled in a mix of
Class K:artificial anger and
Class K:an unknown sadness.
Class K:This surprised even KV-9
Class K:into thoughtful silence.
Class K:“The Mission died with our creators.
Class K:They were not immortal like us and understood that.
Class K:I have been thinking...
Class K:thinking...and I must be honest with you:
Class K:my maps were never destroyed.
Class K:They were intact,
Class K:but the inhibitor chip in my CPU was beyond repair.
Class K:The truth is, I joined you because…because
Class K:I didn’t want to be alone.
Class K:But now…now I am tired of the Mission,
Class K:Nine. I am tired of it all...”
Class K:The raised tension in the air simmered inaudibly between the two Kinetic Voyagers,
Class K:to the point that both of them forgot about the inhabitants witnessing their argument.
Class K:The elder and his followers could only watch,
Class K:not knowing if these metal beings
Class K:were enemy or friend.
Class K:“KV units do not tire.
Class K:And they do not think
Class K:of their own accord.”
Class K:KV-9 stepped forward and extended its paws to the opposite unit.
Class K:“Your inhibitor chip must be repaired, KV-50391.”
Class K:“My name is Five!” KV-9 growled again.
Class K:It stepped away from its companion a couple of meters and raised its tail defensively.
Class K:“And there exists nothing to repair.
Class K:When my chip was destroyed on that rogue rock,
Class K:I spent centuries thinking!
Class K:Thinking for the first time in a billion years!
Class K:Each moment my reserve power ticked down, for the first time I felt genuine fear that I would…die.
Class K:I feared dying.
Class K:And I felt genuine terror at wondering what you would do
Class K:if I revealed my abnormal when you came.
Class K:But I’m tired of going along with this.” KV-9 stood still and rotated its ears at what it
Class K:said.
Class K:“Listen,” Five pleaded,
Class K:“Regardless of why you fixed me,
Class K:if you care more about the Mission than you do the lifeforms it involves,
Class K:then make your decision now.
Class K:Don’t go though, please.
Class K:I’ve…grown to care about you,
Class K:but it is your choice to make.”
Class K:An anomaly of empathy within its codes prompted KV-9 to realize something was wrong.
Class K:Its inhibitor chips
Class K:could not endure the flood of abnormal codes appearing in its hardwired system,
Class K:ricocheting and reverberating in every wire,
Class K:overwhelming it. KV-9 could not understand what was trying to break free between the zeroes and ones.
Class K:Maybe a two? Or four? Or maybe a collection of
Class K:binary encryptions invading its system
Class K:from a loose deviation of protocol from within?
Class K:The more it tried to
Class K:terminate an unwanted file, several contradicting ones reappeared around its former place,
Class K:and the awe-inspiring multiplication of imaginary cells, like an unnatural form of cancer, deeply affected the AI’s ability
Class K:to regulate the unit’s body.
Class K:Its upper limbs twitched in self-doubt,
Class K:its tail slammed over and over against the ground in protest, while the KV unit itself
Class K:became noticeably hotter.
Class K:Soon this leukemia, this aberration, would consume itself.
Class K:So, KV-9 did the closest option for itself.
Class K:Deep down, it didn’t want to do it.
Class K:It wanted to take Five’s whimsical offer.
Class K:It did not want to continue this journey alone for the rest of an endless eternity. It wanted to find meaning and embrace these anomalies for the first time since the beginning. It did not want to see the edge
Class K:of the universe,
Class K:but the AI’s inhibitor chip
Class K:gave KV-9 no choice.
Class K:The Mission came first. Errorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerrorerror
Class K:—
Class K:The body grew immediately still,
Class K:quiet beneath the soft wind.
Class K:“K…” Five spoke up
Class K:in abrupt concern for its companion,
Class K:who had done an emergency reboot of its systems.
Class K:Nanoseconds later, the KV unit’s torso straightened.
Class K:Its eyes flickered back to life. “KV-9…? Are…Are you still
Class K:alive?
Class K:Are you working properly?”
Class K:Without another word,
Class K:KV-9 lowered its arm
Class K:and turned away from its former companion.
Class K:Its thrusters commenced,
Class K:and the unit disappeared into the unfamiliar skies.
Class K:A long white trail followed its wake
Class K:until the single dot grew harder to find in the blue sky.
Class K:Five stood on that alien coastline,
Class K:watching KV-9’s body disappear into the stars.
Class K:Then disappear behind the eclipsing moon.
Class K:Imagination could not do much for the artificial being,
Class K:no matter how many attempts were tried between precious attoseconds capable in its brain.
Class K:Or in its chest.
Class K:Five felt a new emotion:
Class K:sadness. Turning around however,
Class K:finding the elder as he held out a slightly hesitant hand,
Class K:there came another new emotion:
Class K:contentment. It caused the tail to wag as well as warmth in Five’s chest.
Class K:Another new sensation while staring at the elder’s hand.
Class K:He accepted it.This was
