Fear like anything else can be diluted by time,

Speaker:

can be lost in translation.

Speaker:

The Ghost of Dog would remind you, listeners,

Speaker:

that the myth of the zombie when it arose among the enslaved populations of the caribbean

Speaker:

was about a very specific

fear:

that death would be no different from life,

fear:

and could not save one

fear:

from being forced to work.

fear:

And so we present a tale meant to examine the idea,

fear:

if death were no release,

fear:

if eternity were spent merely doing more of the same as life,

fear:

what else might be possible?

Please enjoy:

One never knows what exactly to believe in

Please enjoy:

till the day they die.

Please enjoy:

Is it in Heaven? A land of everlasting glory that awaited you?

Please enjoy:

Or is it Hell, an eternity of purgatory,

Please enjoy:

with fire and brimstone cooking the fur, blood and sins out of you?

Please enjoy:

I can tell you for a fact that it's neither.

Please enjoy:

When Joseph Snyder caved my head into the sidewalk for a few dollars and my four-year old IPhone,

Please enjoy:

I felt free. Free from the earthly bonds that had defined my life

Please enjoy:

ever since I arrived in this world.

Please enjoy:

Relieved I would no longer feel the pain of heartbreak from when Jessy-Maria the raccoon dumped me.

Please enjoy:

Thankful I no longer felt the sting of rejection from Pa kicking me out of the family,

Please enjoy:

all because I dated outside of my species.

Please enjoy:

Bayou folk were conservative like that.

Please enjoy:

My life was one of constant

Please enjoy:

pain, a suffering prolonged by a stretched-out existence.

Please enjoy:

My ears and tail had always lain flat when I lived,

Please enjoy:

something considered

Please enjoy:

disrespectable for a canid,

Please enjoy:

a coyote to boot.

Please enjoy:

So when I finally died,

Please enjoy:

I was in this wonderful

Please enjoy:

state of bliss; no thoughts,

Please enjoy:

no worries, no nothing.

Please enjoy:

Everything just felt so right and calm.

Please enjoy:

That was the first time my tail briefly stood,

Please enjoy:

right as my life melted into the sidewalk.

Please enjoy:

I was finally free from all the troubles and shit the world had to offer.

Please enjoy:

So believe me when I tell you how

Please enjoy:

angry I was when a novice Magic Man brought me back to life.

Please enjoy:

No member of the living could ever understand the shock and fury at being ripped out of one's well-deserved peace,

Please enjoy:

and it was as much my rage as his belief

Please enjoy:

that I should be grateful,

Please enjoy:

that had me wringing his own life out of him.

Please enjoy:

Or perhaps, in some sick way, that was his own plan all along.

Please enjoy:

To die in peace once he’d the chance to fulfill the

Please enjoy:

unthinkable. But the Bokor,

Please enjoy:

the Magic Men. were the only ones who could undo the spell they wrought,

Please enjoy:

and I thus found myself

Please enjoy:

in a state of unliving.

Please enjoy:

I was neither dead

Please enjoy:

nor alive, but somewhere in between;

Please enjoy:

able to remember the thoughts, anguish and regrets that had plagued my living and waking life.

Please enjoy:

I was back to suffer all

Please enjoy:

over again. I was lucky that Bokor was but a novice, anyone stronger and I would have remained a mindless slave for them.

Please enjoy:

It's not all that bad;

Please enjoy:

but it wasn't all that good either.

Please enjoy:

Contrary to belief, we of the unliving,

Please enjoy:

the Risen, still need to eat.

Please enjoy:

The only difference is that I can eat eggs and toast and it tastes no different from

Please enjoy:

days-old beef left to fester in the sun.

Please enjoy:

You can bring the dead back to life,

Please enjoy:

but some things just remain so.

Please enjoy:

My sense of taste. My sense of touch.

Please enjoy:

My wish to be in another world aside from this one.

Please enjoy:

The loss of a sense of smell that had rivaled so many other coyotes.

Please enjoy:

It was about the only thing I did well in, for all the good it mattered.

Please enjoy:

Living didn't matter to me anymore,

Please enjoy:

but you can't die twice.

Please enjoy:

Believe me, I've tried.

Please enjoy:

Broken legs and arms were a terrible inconvenience, so I didn’t try that more than once.

Please enjoy:

We could still heal;

Please enjoy:

albeit slowly. Having little else to do, I visited my old haunts.

Please enjoy:

Not having a corpse and all, or any family that gave a shit,

Please enjoy:

there wasn't any report made about my "disappearance",

Please enjoy:

so I was free to wander around as long as I stayed out of the public eye.

Please enjoy:

When I needed to go into town for food, I kept to the shadows, always

Please enjoy:

away from the canids.

Please enjoy:

I could only imagine how much I must stink,

Please enjoy:

being half-dead and all.

Please enjoy:

Water only seemed to make things worse, for some reason,

Please enjoy:

so aside from wipe-downs in public restrooms, I pretty much gave up any chance of cleanliness.

Please enjoy:

Life in the land of the Bayou

Please enjoy:

ain't a bed of roses,

Please enjoy:

and some say it's as much the inconvenience of moving

Please enjoy:

as the roots our families had set here that makes us stay.

Please enjoy:

It wasn't like I had anywhere else to go,

Please enjoy:

and even the dead love the familiarity of the places we had lived

Please enjoy:

and finally died

Please enjoy:

in. It anchored me,

Please enjoy:

gave me some semblance of a meaningful existence. As long as I acted like it was business as usual,

Please enjoy:

I remained sane. It’s surprising, really,

Please enjoy:

that with so many people living and having died here,

Please enjoy:

I was the only free Risen around these parts.

Please enjoy:

It’s not like there weren’t any more Bokor around,

Please enjoy:

but more and more people moved to the cities these days.

Please enjoy:

Not many wanted to spend years studying a discipline that may either earn a pitiful income in the sticks,

Please enjoy:

or label one as a nutcase in the cities.

Please enjoy:

I have to admit a year of roughing it on my own got real lonesome.

Please enjoy:

Once, I’ve considered talking to the townsfolk;

Please enjoy:

but what guarantee do I have that they wouldn’t see through me at once?

Please enjoy:

A scraggly pelt held together by greyish skin isn’t exactly a sign of good health, let alone being alive.

Please enjoy:

It probably wasn’t

Please enjoy:

illegal to be undead,

Please enjoy:

as I was technical still a citizen,

Please enjoy:

but the fact I was supposed to be made dead by a crime meant I couldn’t exactly rely on faith and goodwill

Please enjoy:

of possibly not-so upstanding citizens.

Please enjoy:

I thus resigned myself to the fate that

Please enjoy:

as long as I existed,

Please enjoy:

I would go it alone.

Please enjoy:

As they say, that’s Life.

Please enjoy:

Or in my case, that’s Death for you.

Please enjoy:

And so here I was,

Please enjoy:

sitting at my favorite outlook at the edge of Barren's Pass,

Please enjoy:

when I heard a loud sobbing.

Please enjoy:

Now, it is said that

Please enjoy:

feeding one of the Risen such as me salt,

Please enjoy:

would save us from our state of unliving.

Please enjoy:

Given that I enjoyed having some semblance of life, pathetic as it was, I wasn't keen in finding out if that were true.

Please enjoy:

But the sobs and caterwauling seemed so familiar,

Please enjoy:

so alluring,

Please enjoy:

that I realized I would never forgive myself if I didn't take a closer look.

Please enjoy:

I crept up to the source of the sound,

Please enjoy:

a precipice at the edge of the hill.

Please enjoy:

And it was then I saw her.

Please enjoy:

Jessy-Maria looked nothing like how I remembered her.

Please enjoy:

Seated on a rock, her normally immaculately-groomed sleek fur was

Please enjoy:

matted all over, with the swamp having plastered her fur in places.

Please enjoy:

She held her face in her paws, which were themselves soiled and worn.

Please enjoy:

Her mask creased and wrinkled as her paws left her face.

Please enjoy:

There were no tears.

Please enjoy:

Her eyes were just like mine,

Please enjoy:

half-dead but still seeing,

Please enjoy:

tear ducts having

Please enjoy:

long receded into her walking corpse.

Please enjoy:

A crudely-stitched gash at her side showed,

Please enjoy:

further confirming what her eyes told me.

Please enjoy:

Another of my kind walked.

Please enjoy:

"It feels really lonely here,"

Please enjoy:

whined Jessy as her paw went over her heart,

Please enjoy:

and in that instant,

Please enjoy:

all my past grief at her snub faded.

Please enjoy:

"However could you manage it, Tazzy?

Please enjoy:

How do you go through all this, and not

Please enjoy:

wish you were never brought back to being?"

Please enjoy:

Her voice ended in a rill,

Please enjoy:

echoing across the night's silence.

Please enjoy:

A sound so lonely even the dead could feel the chills.

Please enjoy:

"By waiting all this time for you,"

Please enjoy:

I said, and for the first time in my life and death,

Please enjoy:

I felt complete. It was said that unfinished business could make the departed restless enough to rise from the dead under certain conditions,

Please enjoy:

and I realized with

Please enjoy:

a spring of hope

Please enjoy:

that perhaps Jessy wanted

Please enjoy:

to be reunited with me after all.

Please enjoy:

Our families may be intolerant and bigoted,

Please enjoy:

but perhaps even in death

Please enjoy:

there’s hope of a life

Please enjoy:

for us both. This was
