“Always Tomorrow”

Please enjoy:

by Frances Pauli

Please enjoy:

On the day she was supposed to die,

Please enjoy:

Tish wore a skirt covered in flowers.

Please enjoy:

She combed her fur with meticulous claws,

Please enjoy:

smoothing it where it needed to be smooth

Please enjoy:

and fluffing it where it needed to be fluffy.

Please enjoy:

Where the gray hairs had gone wiry and disobedient,

Please enjoy:

the old bear only patted them with one paw and then

Please enjoy:

let them be what they would.

Please enjoy:

Her knees complained on the walk to the meadows

Please enjoy:

and her steps stuttered to one side and then the other.

Please enjoy:

She went slowly and patiently along the beaten path,

Please enjoy:

her spine curling her shoulders tight beside her chin.

Please enjoy:

Her tail twitched beneath her skirt,

Please enjoy:

making the flowers on it dance with her every third step.

Please enjoy:

The air grew fragrant as she went.

Please enjoy:

The wildflowers only bloomed for a few weeks in spring,

Please enjoy:

and it had been three long years since she'd felt the urge, or had the energy,

Please enjoy:

to make the trek across town to see them.

Please enjoy:

Today, she stopped at the meadow's edge

Please enjoy:

and lifted her muzzle higher.

Please enjoy:

Today, she inhaled the scent of flowers,

Please enjoy:

listened to the song of bees,

Please enjoy:

and prepared herself for death.

Please enjoy:

When she stepped into the meadow,

Please enjoy:

the thick greens cushioned her tired feet.

Please enjoy:

The herbs crushed beneath her pads

Please enjoy:

added a spice to the air,

Please enjoy:

and Tish felt her muscles tingling.

Please enjoy:

She hungrily inhaled air filled with the smell of fresh,

Please enjoy:

growing things. She walked,

Please enjoy:

one patient step after the other,

Please enjoy:

to the center of the field, a high spot

Please enjoy:

where the flowers splayed out to all sides:

Please enjoy:

purple and white,

Please enjoy:

pink and palest blue.

Please enjoy:

The graying bear closed her eyes.

Please enjoy:

She lifted one flat foot

Please enjoy:

and stepped to the left and then the right.

Please enjoy:

She hummed deep in her great chest,

Please enjoy:

and she raised both arms,

Please enjoy:

waving them through the warm spring air.

Please enjoy:

Her body swayed less than it might have

Please enjoy:

due to the crick in her spine,

Please enjoy:

and her heart beat faster than it had since her Henry passed away.

Please enjoy:

She danced amid the flowers,

Please enjoy:

the dance of bees and spring and honey.

Please enjoy:

Tish danced, and the scents of mint and clover filled her.

Please enjoy:

It was not a long dance.

Please enjoy:

Certainly, she tired faster than she used to.

Please enjoy:

Her arms came down and her feet fumbled a bit on the final spin.

Please enjoy:

As she finished, her knees gave out, and the big bear just let them,

Please enjoy:

fluttering to the ground with her skirts awry.

Please enjoy:

Her breaths were ragged and shallow.

Please enjoy:

She gasped, remembered that she'd meant to die,

Please enjoy:

and then lay back among the flowers and stared at the sky,

Please enjoy:

waiting. “That was something else,”

Please enjoy:

a brash voice interrupted her.

Please enjoy:

The rustling of feet against the meadow drew her attention back to living.

Please enjoy:

“I've never seen anything like it.”

Please enjoy:

“Go away,” Tish growled, closing her eyes.

Please enjoy:

The footsteps continued heedlessly for another four strides,

Please enjoy:

after which she heard the distinct sound

Please enjoy:

of someone settling in.

Please enjoy:

“I don't mean to intrude.”

Please enjoy:

It was a male voice, too harsh for the minty tingles still fluttering through her tired body.

Please enjoy:

Tish opened her eyes and tried to sit.

Please enjoy:

Her spine hurt and her muscles wobbled.

Please enjoy:

In the end, she only rolled to the side

Please enjoy:

and propped herself up on an elbow.

Please enjoy:

A fox sat cross-legged in the grass.

Please enjoy:

His ruddy pelt gleamed in the morning sun,

Please enjoy:

peeking out from beneath a fine green jacket.

Please enjoy:

His long muzzle pointed directly at her,

Please enjoy:

and his eyes glinted like sharp stones.

Please enjoy:

“Then don't,” Tish said.

Please enjoy:

“I'm busy.” “But it was such a lovely dance,

Please enjoy:

and I happened to be walking past and…

Please enjoy:

What is it that you're busy doing exactly?”

Please enjoy:

He squinted at her, sniffing the air between them.

Please enjoy:

“I'm dying,” she said.

Please enjoy:

“Nice day for it.” “Yes, it is.”

Please enjoy:

Tish glared at him.

Please enjoy:

For a moment, she thought it had worked.

Please enjoy:

The fox nodded and reached for the green sack he'd dropped on the ground beside him.

Please enjoy:

She willed him to retrieve it and go, but instead he stuck his black fingers into the canvas

Please enjoy:

and pulled out a thermos.

Please enjoy:

“If you don't mind,” she said.

Please enjoy:

“Oh, no. You go right ahead.”

Please enjoy:

The fox unscrewed his thermos top,

Please enjoy:

overpowering the spicy meadow scents

Please enjoy:

with a thick, nutty aroma.

Please enjoy:

He upturned the cap

Please enjoy:

and poured a measure of dark coffee.

Please enjoy:

Velvety paws lifted the drink to his muzzle,

Please enjoy:

but he paused just short of drinking it

Please enjoy:

and eyed Tish with a sideways glance.

Please enjoy:

“I wonder…” He left that hanging in the air

Please enjoy:

and sipped the steaming brew.

Please enjoy:

“You wonder what?” She heaved herself into a sitting position.

Please enjoy:

“I don't want to pry,”

Please enjoy:

the fox said. “But one does wonder what someone is dying of.” “Hmph.”

Please enjoy:

Tish snorted and accidentally inhaled the heady coffee aroma.

Please enjoy:

Her nose twitched.

Please enjoy:

“Today is a fine day to die. Why not?”

Please enjoy:

“I see.” He blinked at her

Please enjoy:

and his coffee steamed accusingly.

Please enjoy:

“It's time,” she said.

Please enjoy:

“I've lived my life, raised my cubs,

Please enjoy:

lost my mate. My fur is gray

Please enjoy:

and my bones complain when I just get up in the morning.”

Please enjoy:

“Oh yes,” the fox said.

Please enjoy:

“Well, that explains it.

Please enjoy:

Coffee?” “What?” “Would you like some?”

Please enjoy:

He fished in his bag again and produced a wide-mouthed mug

Please enjoy:

suitable for a bear-sized muzzle.

Please enjoy:

Before she could answer, he'd already begun to pour coffee into it.

Please enjoy:

“I suppose I have a few minutes.”

Please enjoy:

Tish's nostrils expanded in her leathery nose.

Please enjoy:

She'd only just shaken off her winter drowsiness,

Please enjoy:

and the aroma of his brew had drowned out the meadow as much as his nattering had spoiled her post-dance trance.

Please enjoy:

“Why not?” “Indeed.” He passed Tish the mug

Please enjoy:

and returned to his sipping.

Please enjoy:

She lifted the coffee to her muzzle,

Please enjoy:

letting the thick aroma fill her head.

Please enjoy:

Her nose twitched.

Please enjoy:

Tish pressed the mug to her lips

Please enjoy:

and drank. The hot coffee burned her tongue,

Please enjoy:

but she didn’t mind.

Please enjoy:

It had been a long time

Please enjoy:

since she'd been awake enough to make a pot herself.

Please enjoy:

She swallowed with a satisfied grunt

Please enjoy:

and wiped her mouth with the back of one paw.

Please enjoy:

“Good, isn't it?” The fox's grin spread nearly to his pointed ears.

Please enjoy:

“Not particularly.”

Please enjoy:

Tish held back her own smile,

Please enjoy:

though she could feel it leaking into her eyes.

Please enjoy:

“But adequate coffee, thank you.”

Please enjoy:

“You've had better?”

Please enjoy:

“Not recently.” She sighed

Please enjoy:

and turned the mug in her paws.

Please enjoy:

“Where did you get this?

Please enjoy:

It's far too big for your pointy little—” “Where?”

Please enjoy:

“What?” “Where did you have better coffee?”

Please enjoy:

They stared at one another for a moment.

Please enjoy:

The fox's eyes shone with the sunlight,

Please enjoy:

reflecting the flowers around them.

Please enjoy:

The day had moved on from dancing and bees.

Please enjoy:

It had turned into an ordinary, conversational day.

Please enjoy:

Tish sighed. “There's a little shop in Thornwood.”

Please enjoy:

Two triangular ears perked forward.

Please enjoy:

The fox's tail whisked against the grass and he looked,

Please enjoy:

just for a second,

Please enjoy:

like a cub awaiting his Solstice presents.

Please enjoy:

“They brew a delightful coffee.”

Please enjoy:

Tish grinned and leaned back on her paws.

Please enjoy:

She'd first tried the Thornwood coffee on a date with Henry.

Please enjoy:

So many seasons

Please enjoy:

ago. “Let's go, then.”

Please enjoy:

The fox popped to his feet and began repacking his bag as if it were settled.

Please enjoy:

Tish handed him back the mug reluctantly.

Please enjoy:

It was far too big for a fox's needs.

Please enjoy:

“I can't go to Thornwood.”

Please enjoy:

She shook her head until the flowers blurred.

Please enjoy:

“Why not?” “I'm dying, for one thing.”

Please enjoy:

“Ah. I almost forgot.”

Please enjoy:

“Well, I didn't. Besides,

Please enjoy:

Thornwood's a half-day's walk.

Please enjoy:

I'd never make it with these ankles.”

Please enjoy:

“So?” The fox shrugged his bag back over one shoulder

Please enjoy:

and straightened his green jacket.

Please enjoy:

“If the walk

Please enjoy:

kills you, what's the problem?”

Please enjoy:

Tish blinked at him.

Please enjoy:

Her logic told her that dying of exhaustion was a great deal different than passing on quietly in a field of flowers.

Please enjoy:

But there was a dare in the fox's eyes.

Please enjoy:

A challenge in the merry swishing of his tail.

Please enjoy:

The coffee in Thornwood

Please enjoy:

had always been her favorite.

Please enjoy:

Henry's, too. “Oh,

Please enjoy:

why not?” She threw up her hands for the fox's benefit

Please enjoy:

and then began the arduous process of climbing back to her feet.

Please enjoy:

“My name is Ronald,”

Please enjoy:

the fox said. “And I could use a walk.”

Please enjoy:

“And a real cup of coffee,”

Please enjoy:

Tish said, though she didn't imagine the little red fox needed any help with his energy levels.

Please enjoy:

“I'm Tish. If I die before we get there, it's your fault.”

Please enjoy:

The fox pointed his grin toward Thornwood

Please enjoy:

and whisked his tail back and forth.

Please enjoy:

“I think I can live with that.” #

Please enjoy:

The sun had dipped below the tops of the fir trees by the time Tish tottered to the edge of town beside Ronald.

Please enjoy:

The nerve at the base of her stout neck still pinched,

Please enjoy:

but the walking had worked the knots out of her legs,

Please enjoy:

and her knees had stopped popping a good hour into the trek.

Please enjoy:

The fresh air had lightened her breath.

Please enjoy:

All along the way,

Please enjoy:

the scents of spring surrounded them.

Please enjoy:

Crocuses and hyacinths dotted the fields around Thornwood,

Please enjoy:

bright and cheery as the sun.

Please enjoy:

But when she and Ronald crossed into the dirt streets,

Please enjoy:

Tish felt her heaviness return.

Please enjoy:

Little houses with lights in the windows,

Please enjoy:

families sitting down to supper,

Please enjoy:

and cubs romping in narrow yards

Please enjoy:

—all of this was behind her now.

Please enjoy:

“So.” Ronald marched beside her.

Please enjoy:

He had matched her slower pace for the whole trip.

Please enjoy:

He'd been quiet, too,

Please enjoy:

and Tish felt certain that was not his normal state.

Please enjoy:

“Where is this miraculous coffee to be had?”

Please enjoy:

Perhaps they'd both been caught up in the sights along the way.

Please enjoy:

Now, Tish remembered she had something to prove

Please enjoy:

—and a date with her demise to follow.

Please enjoy:

“It's just a block down on the right.”

Please enjoy:

“Marvelous.” He clapped his velvet paws together.

Please enjoy:

“And do they serve food as well?”

Please enjoy:

“I don't believe so.”

Please enjoy:

The fox drooped. His tail dragged in the dust

Please enjoy:

and his ears fell to the sides.

Please enjoy:

“My stomach is rubbing against my backbone,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “Well, you're welcome to eat after we have the coffee.”

Please enjoy:

Tish marched a little faster,

Please enjoy:

but her belly betrayed her,

Please enjoy:

grumbling loudly enough to raise Ronald's ears again.

Please enjoy:

“There was a berry patch just outside of town,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “I don't need to eat.”

Please enjoy:

She sniffed and scanned the thatched-roof buildings.

Please enjoy:

“Just a cup of good coffee and I'm done.”

Please enjoy:

“Still dying, then?”

Please enjoy:

His voice shifted to a tone that might have been disappointment or mockery.

Please enjoy:

She couldn’t tell which. She stamped the last

Please enjoy:

few paces to the little shop

Please enjoy:

where Henry had first asked her

Please enjoy:

if she wanted to have cubs.

Please enjoy:

The place looked exactly as it always had,

Please enjoy:

with large windows along the front,

Please enjoy:

stools of various heights set along the sidewalk tables,

Please enjoy:

and a pretty yellow door with daisies painted on it.

Please enjoy:

The only difference she could note

Please enjoy:

was the square closed sign

Please enjoy:

hanging in the window.

Please enjoy:

“Drat.” Tish stared at the sign.

Please enjoy:

“Your shop isn't open.”

Please enjoy:

“What time is it?” She could still smell the hints of coffee lingering around the stools,

Please enjoy:

but the lights were off,

Please enjoy:

and nothing moved inside.

Please enjoy:

“Time to eat something,”

Please enjoy:

Ronald said. “Come on.”

Please enjoy:

“I'm not hungry.” Tish's belly rumbled at the lie.

Please enjoy:

The fox's eyes widened.

Please enjoy:

He tilted his head to one side

Please enjoy:

and waved his tail faster.

Please enjoy:

“It would be a shame to die on an empty stomach.” #

Please enjoy:

“Sleeping on the cold ground is bound to do me in.”

Please enjoy:

Tish stuffed a handful of sweet berries into her muzzle

Please enjoy:

and grunted while she chewed.

Please enjoy:

The night had grown soft and blue at the edges,

Please enjoy:

but she could still make out Ronald's outline lounging on the grass.

Please enjoy:

There was a chill to the earth,

Please enjoy:

and it leached through her fur,

Please enjoy:

but Ronald had found a thicket with soft enough ground that her bones didn't complain.

Please enjoy:

“Good for you,” Ronald said.

Please enjoy:

“A bear needs to sleep on the ground sometimes.”

Please enjoy:

“I suppose you know all about bears.”

Please enjoy:

Tish lifted the wide mug into the moonlight and squinted across at him,

Please enjoy:

doubting he could see her expression at all.

Please enjoy:

They'd gorged on berries until the sun went down,

Please enjoy:

and then he'd emptied his thermos

Please enjoy:

pouring them both another mug of coffee.

Please enjoy:

“I might, in fact.” She leaned her head back

Please enjoy:

and drained the last drops from the bear-sized cup.

Please enjoy:

Overhead, the sky had broken out in stars.

Please enjoy:

“I meant to die today.”

Please enjoy:

“There's always tomorrow.”

Please enjoy:

“You going to tell me about the mug?”

Please enjoy:

He sighed, a long whisper of air in the darkness.

Please enjoy:

Tish heard him shifting,

Please enjoy:

fidgeting. A breeze riffled through the grass,

Please enjoy:

and the fox spoke

Please enjoy:

as if he were talking to his own memories.

Please enjoy:

“I went with a bear once,

Please enjoy:

not too long ago, in fact.

Please enjoy:

The mug was his.” Tish nodded,

Please enjoy:

whether or not he could see her.

Please enjoy:

She kept quiet, allowing him to decide how much, if anything, he wanted to share.

Please enjoy:

The breeze played with her fur,

Please enjoy:

and she set down the mug and lay back to watch the sky bloom.

Please enjoy:

After a long, quiet moment,

Please enjoy:

Ronald began. “He was a grizzly.”

Please enjoy:

“Ah. Sexy.” “You know it.”

Please enjoy:

She smiled at his tone,

Please enjoy:

at the humor and the hint of insecurity there.

Please enjoy:

“We had a good time

Please enjoy:

—two years’ worth.

Please enjoy:

Lars was a lot of fun, a good friend…”

Please enjoy:

“But?” “I thought we could get through the winter thing.

Please enjoy:

You know, he'd nap and I'd just skulk about for a few months.”

Please enjoy:

“Ah.” Tish nodded again.

Please enjoy:

It wasn't easy for a bear to pursue a relationship with a non-torpor species.

Please enjoy:

The bear missed out on so much,

Please enjoy:

and the active partner had to keep themselves company for the long winter months.

Please enjoy:

“That's a tough one.”

Please enjoy:

“It was okay the first year.

Please enjoy:

I got lonely, of course, but there was that great reunion when he finally got moving again.”

Please enjoy:

“Wake-up sex.” Tish smiled at the stars.

Please enjoy:

“Oh yeah.” They fell silent again,

Please enjoy:

but tension lingered.

Please enjoy:

Their humor had stalled his story.

Please enjoy:

Tish found herself curious,

Please enjoy:

interested in Ronald

Please enjoy:

and what had happened with his bear.

Please enjoy:

And she hadn't been interested in anything for a very long time.

Please enjoy:

“So what happened?”

Please enjoy:

She scritched at her fur absently and yawned.

Please enjoy:

“That spring was great.

Please enjoy:

Summer was good. But when fall rolled around, I started getting

Please enjoy:

nervous, pulling back.” “Mm-hmm.”

Please enjoy:

The stars twinkled down at her, and she remembered her first torpor,

Please enjoy:

the way her body craved food like it would never eat again,

Please enjoy:

the way her muscles turned to jelly,

Please enjoy:

the way she had dreamed constantly of rest.

Please enjoy:

“Things got tense,

Please enjoy:

then nasty. I'd pick a fight and he'd pull farther away.”

Please enjoy:

His claws clicked in the darkness,

Please enjoy:

tapping together.

Please enjoy:

“I guess I got scared,

Please enjoy:

looking ahead to another long wait alone.

Please enjoy:

I pushed him away,

Please enjoy:

and he didn't exactly fight to stay.”

Please enjoy:

“Likely couldn't,” Tish mumbled. Her eyes

Please enjoy:

had grown heavy, and his story put a sad note in her chest.

Please enjoy:

“Body starts shutting down on you.

Please enjoy:

Not much energy to move,

Please enjoy:

let alone argue.” “You think so?”

Please enjoy:

“I do.” She smiled at the stars

Please enjoy:

and let her eyes close.

Please enjoy:

“Maybe he thought you'd be there when he woke up.”

Please enjoy:

“Doubtful… Tish?” She jerked awake.

Please enjoy:

“Yeah?” “I'll see you in the morning.”

Please enjoy:

It wasn't quite a question.

Please enjoy:

“Maybe.” A low chuckle shook her hairy body.

Please enjoy:

She'd relaxed, drifted off,

Please enjoy:

but it was nothing,

Please enjoy:

nothing at all like the deep, languid winter torpor.

Please enjoy:

“You never know, Ronald.

Please enjoy:

You never know.” # The coffee aroma reached them before they were in sight of the shop.

Please enjoy:

He tried to hide it,

Please enjoy:

but Tish caught the fox sniffing the air out of the corner of her eye.

Please enjoy:

There was no mistaking the anxious wagging of that bushy tail, either.

Please enjoy:

She grinned and shuffled along at his side.

Please enjoy:

Ronald was in for a treat.

Please enjoy:

The night on the ground

Please enjoy:

hadn't killed her.

Please enjoy:

In fact, the pain in her neck had all but vanished,

Please enjoy:

and her muscles felt properly stretched.

Please enjoy:

As they approached the coffee shop,

Please enjoy:

Tish's strides lengthened without any argument at all from her knees.

Please enjoy:

“Smells good.” Ronald had been quiet for most of the morning,

Please enjoy:

but his ears perked now, and his grin returned.

Please enjoy:

“You might just be right about the coffee.”

Please enjoy:

“Did you doubt me?”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, yes.” His voice held steady,

Please enjoy:

but the glint in his eyes gave away the tease.

Please enjoy:

Tish nudged him with one shoulder

Please enjoy:

and then hastened her steps,

Please enjoy:

hurrying to the cafe entrance

Please enjoy:

and beating the fox by a good four strides.

Please enjoy:

The painted daisies smiled from their yellow field,

Please enjoy:

and the old bear pulled open the door

Please enjoy:

and inhaled the rich scents wafting from inside.

Please enjoy:

They'd arrived on the heels of the morning rush,

Please enjoy:

so they didn't have to wait long for their drinks.

Please enjoy:

With two steaming mugs before them,

Please enjoy:

they sat at one of the medium-sized tables.

Please enjoy:

Ronald stretched a little

Please enjoy:

to reach the ground with his toes,

Please enjoy:

while Tish hunched ever so slightly to reach her drink.

Please enjoy:

The town bustled around them

Please enjoy:

as animals began their daily routines,

Please enjoy:

but the table fell into a quiet serenity

Please enjoy:

broken only by the sounds of their sipping.

Please enjoy:

When they'd downed a good half of their coffees,

Please enjoy:

Ronald perked up

Please enjoy:

and leaned forward as far as he could.

Please enjoy:

“This is very good coffee.

Please enjoy:

Do you still plan on dying today?”

Please enjoy:

Tish sat taller and looked around.

Please enjoy:

The sun lifted above the trees,

Please enjoy:

backed by a blue sky.

Please enjoy:

There were plenty of flowers in the fields outside of town,

Please enjoy:

and she figured Thornwood

Please enjoy:

was as nice a place to give up

Please enjoy:

as any. “Sure.” “Oh.” He sat back and nodded.

Please enjoy:

His eyes narrowed.

Please enjoy:

“I see.” “Don't have anything else on the schedule,”

Please enjoy:

she added. “And it's a lovely day.”

Please enjoy:

“Right, right. It's just…”

Please enjoy:

He trailed off and turned his head to the side,

Please enjoy:

staring toward the far end of town.

Please enjoy:

“Lars and I used to collect honey not far from here.

Please enjoy:

Our secret spot, you know.

Please enjoy:

But it's not something a fox can fetch on his own.”

Please enjoy:

“Honey?” Tish's belly woke up.

Please enjoy:

Ronald gave a wistful sigh.

Please enjoy:

“Been a while since I've tasted it.”

Please enjoy:

“You miss him, don't you?”

Please enjoy:

She kept her voice soft,

Please enjoy:

but he jerked back anyway, shaking his head.

Please enjoy:

She watched his paws drift over his mug,

Please enjoy:

caressing it, lifting it slowly to his muzzle again.

Please enjoy:

“I haven't had fresh honey in longer than I can remember.”

Please enjoy:

“It's not far.” “I suppose dying could wait a little longer.”

Please enjoy:

“There's always tomorrow.”

Please enjoy:

Tish snorted. “Or tonight.

Please enjoy:

Will it take us a whole day to fetch your secret stash?”

Please enjoy:

“Oh, no.” He jumped from his stool,

Please enjoy:

tail wagging, and danced from one foot to the other.

Please enjoy:

“It's not that far.

Please enjoy:

You should have plenty of time to die afterwards.”

Please enjoy:

“It's the right time.”

Please enjoy:

Tish set down her empty mug

Please enjoy:

and tried to keep the excitement out of her voice.

Please enjoy:

It had been a long time since she'd tasted fresh honey.

Please enjoy:

Ronald really did know a bit about bears.

Please enjoy:

“I'm old enough to die if I want to.”

Please enjoy:

“After we get some honey?”

Please enjoy:

“Yes, scamp.”

Please enjoy:

She growled at him,

Please enjoy:

but her heart wasn't in it.

Please enjoy:

“After we get the honey.”

Please enjoy:

The fox danced a happy jig,

Please enjoy:

and the old bear sighed.

Please enjoy:

They left the cafe, drifting out of Thornwood without talking,

Please enjoy:

both lost in their own memories.

Please enjoy:

Tish let the sun warm away the last of her torpor.

Please enjoy:

Her belly sang of honey to be had,

Please enjoy:

and her legs stretched out.

Please enjoy:

Her steps sprang, and her stubby tail twitched beneath her skirts. #

Please enjoy:

“I think the honey was better than the coffee.”

Please enjoy:

Ronald sat with his back against the tree's trunk.

Please enjoy:

Overhead, the bees had finally stopped buzzing and dive-bombing,

Please enjoy:

going back to the work of repairing the damage Tish had done to their hive.

Please enjoy:

“It was certainly worth the stings.”

Please enjoy:

She rubbed both paws against her throbbing nose.

Please enjoy:

“But just barely.” “Lars used to say the same thing.”

Please enjoy:

His voice softened.

Please enjoy:

He sighed and shifted so that he lay on his side beneath the tree.

Please enjoy:

His paw threaded through the grass.

Please enjoy:

A wistful expression softened his eyes and ears.

Please enjoy:

“How long ago was your Lars?”

Please enjoy:

Tish rolled to face him,

Please enjoy:

propping herself up with one arm and taking a moment to lick the dregs of honey from her fingers.

Please enjoy:

“Last fall.” There was agony in that confession

Please enjoy:

and a touch of shame.

Please enjoy:

“You mean this season's torpor?”

Please enjoy:

“Yes.” Tish stuck her fingers in her mouth

Please enjoy:

and sucked at the honey while she considered his confession.

Please enjoy:

It wasn't her business, but he'd brought it up.

Please enjoy:

He'd sought her out,

Please enjoy:

perhaps, specifically because she was a bear.

Please enjoy:

And his Lars would be out of torpor by now.

Please enjoy:

“It's not easy dating a bear,”

Please enjoy:

she said, rolling onto her back

Please enjoy:

and stretching her arms wide.

Please enjoy:

“But it's not easy on the bear either.

Please enjoy:

You miss a lot. Every year you wake up wondering what happened while you slept.

Please enjoy:

Will everything be where you left it?

Please enjoy:

Will everyone be?” “Lars was pretty

Please enjoy:

depressed right after he woke up.”

Please enjoy:

“Depressed.” Tish sniffed the night air.

Please enjoy:

There were lilies blooming somewhere.

Please enjoy:

Fresh grass and thick nectar.

Please enjoy:

Post-torpor depression was a real thing,

Please enjoy:

but was Ronald worried about his Lars

Please enjoy:

or was he talking about her?

Please enjoy:

The ground felt cool beneath her spine,

Please enjoy:

but her back didn't ache at all anymore.

Please enjoy:

Her fur was graying, surely,

Please enjoy:

but she was not so old as she'd imagined two days ago.

Please enjoy:

In fact, she felt better than she had in ages.

Please enjoy:

She felt like dying wasn't such a good idea after all.

Please enjoy:

“I suppose we all wake up a little grumpy.”

Please enjoy:

He chuckled, and the bees overhead

Please enjoy:

buzzed a warning.

Please enjoy:

In the distance, a cricket played a sad tune,

Please enjoy:

but its power was lost on them.

Please enjoy:

They both sat in the fading light,

Please enjoy:

thinking. After a dozen breaths,

Please enjoy:

Ronald broke the silence.

Please enjoy:

“How forgiving do you suppose a post-torpor bear will be?”

Please enjoy:

“Well.” Tish closed her eyes and chuckled, deep in her chest where she'd only just remembered what it was to be a bear.

Please enjoy:

“I suppose that will depend on how much honey you bring him.”

Please enjoy:

The fox's laugh had a high whine to it.

Please enjoy:

It floated over the top of hers

Please enjoy:

—a nervous song, but a hopeful one.

Please enjoy:

Tish wrapped her paws around her body and sighed.

Please enjoy:

Laughing had a magic of its own,

Please enjoy:

like good coffee and great company.

Please enjoy:

His voice sounded sleepy when he spoke again,

Please enjoy:

barely audible. “Thanks, Tish.”

Please enjoy:

“Thank you, Ronald.”

Please enjoy:

She sighed and let the grass cradle

Please enjoy:

her. The torpor was gone.

Please enjoy:

The last of her aches and pains went with it.

Please enjoy:

Only ordinary sleep would take her now,

Please enjoy:

and, if she was lucky,

Please enjoy:

dreams of her mate,

Please enjoy:

her cubs, and a belly full of sweetest honey. #

Please enjoy:

Ronald was gone when she awoke.

Please enjoy:

She didn't need to sniff the air to know he wasn't coming back.

Please enjoy:

The mug he'd left her said enough.

Please enjoy:

A bear-sized cup brimming with honey

Please enjoy:

waited in the spot where he'd slept.

Please enjoy:

He'd taken more than a few stings for that.

Please enjoy:

Tish smiled, imagining his poor nose swollen with stings,

Please enjoy:

his velvet paws scrubbing at the burn that couldn't end soon enough.

Please enjoy:

The sun lit the treetops but hadn't reached the grass.

Please enjoy:

Dew made a damp mat of her bed.

Please enjoy:

She stood, trundled to the mug of golden sugars,

Please enjoy:

and dipped her tongue into it.

Please enjoy:

Delicious, but she should save some for later. She had a lovely clay jar for honey and it probably needed dusting.

Please enjoy:

Since she didn't want to die anymore,

Please enjoy:

she should probably head home.

Please enjoy:

Carrying Ronald's gift,

Please enjoy:

Tish headed off with the bees singing her an eager farewell.

Please enjoy:

Her post-torpor funk had lifted.

Please enjoy:

Her steps came without stiffness,

Please enjoy:

and her knees kept quiet about it.

Please enjoy:

She was old, but she was a bear,

Please enjoy:

and she had things to do.

Please enjoy:

As she walked, she wondered if Ronald had found his bear,

Please enjoy:

if Lars would forgive him

Please enjoy:

as easily as she suspected.

Please enjoy:

She'd have liked to know how it went.

Please enjoy:

If they reunited.

Please enjoy:

Tish breathed deeply and pushed her shoulders back, straightening her spine.

Please enjoy:

Maybe she'd see them soon.

Please enjoy:

Maybe Ronald and his bear would drop in for coffee.

Please enjoy:

She might even go looking for them eventually,

Please enjoy:

find out what happened.

Please enjoy:

Maybe. Today she had a house to dust.

Please enjoy:

But there was always tomorrow.
