Speaker:“A Poetic Definition”,
Speaker:a poem by Rob MacWolf
Speaker:There are schools of thought where thinking must needs
Speaker:work like thin magnetics,
Speaker:Aligning every glittering gear with every last ball-bearing,
Speaker:So that the world is
Speaker:dissected by 'if and only' statements
Speaker:To categories perfect,
Speaker:and to crystal clear declensions.
Speaker:But these are not the only orthodoxy we've invented,
Speaker:And mother nature does not write
Speaker:in dictionary dryness.
Speaker:So many things cross over,
Speaker:as in limina-like haunting,
Speaker:From one sphere to another,
Speaker:quite unconscious of the border.
Speaker:So thus the poor philosopher,
Speaker:confounded by plucked chicken.
Speaker:So thus the gender binary is broken into spectrum.
Speaker:So thus the evolutioning,
Speaker:through fire and love and hunger,
Speaker:From wolf upon the frozen steppes
Speaker:to squeaky bone and walkies.
Speaker:I would not look for poetry in any definition.
Speaker:But in the density of truth constraint
Speaker:of form imposes, Like carbonated soda bottle,
Speaker:contents under pressure,
Speaker:Like oak limbs grown thrice thicker,
Speaker:from holding up the ivy,
Speaker:Like depth of feeling shown
Speaker:but by the effort to contain it.
Speaker:For even in free verse,
Speaker:the plain truth that plain prose speaks plainly
Speaker:Is crystalized, is sanctified,
Speaker:to a mosaic icon.
Speaker:And does the halo make the icon?
Speaker:Or the jeweled letters?
Speaker:The colors of the tesserae?
Speaker:The linden wood unblemished?
Speaker:The weeks of prayer and fasting before brush
Speaker:may meet with palate?
Speaker:Or is it in enthronement
Speaker:in the shrine or sanctuary
Speaker:That painting or mosaic
Speaker:or stained glass
Speaker:becomes an icon? This was “A Poetic Definition”
