“A Friend in Winter”

Please enjoy:

by MikasiWolf, Part #1

Please enjoy:

of #2 Everyone in Twotown University loved the Christmas holidays, whether they celebrated them or not.

Please enjoy:

Those who did went home to family or their SOs,

Please enjoy:

while those who didn’t

Please enjoy:

also went home to family or their SOs.

Please enjoy:

Except for a select few,

Please enjoy:

including Tsang Hai Jun.

Please enjoy:

As is the case with many Asian naming systems,

Please enjoy:

Tsang’s first name was actually Hai Jun,

Please enjoy:

though everyone in school called him Tsang.

Please enjoy:

It was Tsang’s first year studying World Economics,

Please enjoy:

and in normal times,

Please enjoy:

he would be looking forward to seeing his family back in Taipei.

Please enjoy:

This didn’t include his older brother Hai Seng,

Please enjoy:

but younger and older brothers never do get along,

Please enjoy:

even less when they were felid.

Please enjoy:

With his head marked with white and dark stripes,

Please enjoy:

accompanied by a spotted pelt,

Please enjoy:

many recognized him as a leopard cat, which,

Please enjoy:

as Tsang had to constantly remind others;

Please enjoy:

was neither leopard nor common cat.

Please enjoy:

Tsang and his family were Buddhists,

Please enjoy:

so they didn’t celebrate Christmas like some Taiwanese did.

Please enjoy:

But like most traditional Chinese,

Please enjoy:

they did observe Dongzhi,

Please enjoy:

the Winter Solstice Festival.

Please enjoy:

Falling during winter

Please enjoy:

—22 December to be exact

Please enjoy:

—some have made comparisons of it to Christmas, with its importance second only to the Lunar New Year,

Please enjoy:

which heralds the coming of spring.

Please enjoy:

In both these festivals,

Please enjoy:

conversations at family gatherings

Please enjoy:

tended towards the side of whose son and daughter got into university or

Please enjoy:

compulsory military service,

Please enjoy:

along with the dreaded

Please enjoy:

“When’re you getting married?”

Please enjoy:

Since his admission as a freshman in September,

Please enjoy:

Tsang made regular calls back home.

Please enjoy:

All through spotty Skype and Whatsapp calls, of course

Please enjoy:

—long distance calls cost more than his student loans combined.

Please enjoy:

Aside from having to deal with his dismissive brother,

Please enjoy:

it gave a sense of normalcy

Please enjoy:

despite being so far from his hometown. Ma and

Please enjoy:

Pa had encouraged him to pursue his studies in the states

Please enjoy:

for the reason that he would have “more opportunities”,

Please enjoy:

but they also seemed to have the preconception

Please enjoy:

that he would also have more opportunities to get hitched.

Please enjoy:

Every other weekly call had them asking about his well-being,

Please enjoy:

and even whether he remembered to use protection or not.

Please enjoy:

That, despite the fact he had yet to meet anyone outside of lectures.

Please enjoy:

The fact that he wasn’t all that suave and confident in speaking to others didn’t exactly help that fact.

Please enjoy:

By the time December drew near, Tsang had

Please enjoy:

had enough of parental interference, well-meant or not.

Please enjoy:

“Ma, Pa, I’m never getting married, if that’s what you’re asking.”

Please enjoy:

Tsang snapped on the phone.

Please enjoy:

His parents always listened to his calls on speakerphone;

Please enjoy:

all the better to talk over each other with.

Please enjoy:

Sometimes his asshole brother even joined in,

Please enjoy:

all part of being one big happy family.

Please enjoy:

“Son, everyone has to go through the process.

Please enjoy:

It’s part of the full cycle of life!

Please enjoy:

Just like all your ancestors that came before.”

Please enjoy:

“Well, here’s some news for you, Ma.

Please enjoy:

I like men, not women.”

Please enjoy:

Taipei has a progressive LGBT movement,

Please enjoy:

though many traditionalists still frown upon it.

Please enjoy:

Tsang immediately learned Ma and Pa

Please enjoy:

weren’t any different.

Please enjoy:

Their stunned silence was quickly punctuated by Hai Seng’s declaration

Please enjoy:

that he’d be damned by the Eighteen Courts of Hell,

Please enjoy:

and that he’d sooner kill him

Please enjoy:

than have a fag for a brother.

Please enjoy:

Tsang cut the call, and it took 15 minutes for his breathing to get back to normal.

Please enjoy:

He could no longer return home,

Please enjoy:

that’s for sure. His parents tried calling back,

Please enjoy:

but he chose to ignore their calls, knowing ignorance was better than hearing whatever they deigned to say.

Please enjoy:

And what was there to hear, anyway?

Please enjoy:

“Son, you better do right by your ancestors, or the Gods help me, I’ll matchmake you faster than you can say ‘gay’!”

Please enjoy:

Two nights later, when the phone rang and he forgot to check the caller ID,

Please enjoy:

he heard the beginnings of a roar from what sounded like his dad

Please enjoy:

and dropped the phone.

Please enjoy:

The parents had sent him

Please enjoy:

countless text messages, but Tsang couldn’t bring himself to read them.

Please enjoy:

He’d grown up with his family

Please enjoy:

for close to 21 years,

Please enjoy:

if he included his time in military service,

Please enjoy:

and he couldn’t bear to see the words of ridicule and denunciation from the only people he could have counted on.

Please enjoy:

They hadn’t yet cancelled his university education,

Please enjoy:

though it would probably be a matter of time before the admin office contacted him.

Please enjoy:

It felt better pretending that he still had a family who would accept him for who he was,

Please enjoy:

rather than waiting at the airport with cleavers.

Please enjoy:

Needing all the cash he could have on paw,

Please enjoy:

Tsang cancelled his flight back home,

Please enjoy:

to receive 50% of the ticket’s value. None of Tsang’s

Please enjoy:

dormmates knew about his sexuality.

Please enjoy:

They’d likely assumed he was just another loner who spent most of his day studying or more likely jacking off to whatever porn he called up on his computer,

Please enjoy:

as if anyone could jack off more than an hour straight.

Please enjoy:

He didn’t have anyone he could call friends,

Please enjoy:

unless he counted Mike Zhang,

Please enjoy:

a yellow-throated marten who studied the same economics program Tsang did.

Please enjoy:

Mike was born and raised in the states,

Please enjoy:

his parents having come over thirty years back,

Please enjoy:

and though he didn’t speak much mandarin,

Please enjoy:

he and Tsang got along fine.

Please enjoy:

He always seemed

Please enjoy:

so laid back in lectures,

Please enjoy:

yet always had an answer for the lecturer’s questions,

Please enjoy:

and had a joke ready for everyone.

Please enjoy:

Mike was on the debate club

Please enjoy:

and had no shortage of friends,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang had so far failed to talk him into going out for a movie or lunch,

Please enjoy:

with others having beaten him to the punch.

Please enjoy:

And as the Christmas break neared,

Please enjoy:

all the students new and old

Please enjoy:

packed their stuff and returned to their hometowns or birthplaces,

Please enjoy:

till school resumed in January.

Please enjoy:

December 20th came.

Please enjoy:

Being alone in the dorm

Please enjoy:

was a most surreal and unfamiliar experience.

Please enjoy:

Whenever the other dormmates were around,

Please enjoy:

Tsang could never summon the courage to tell them to change the TV channel to something he’s a little more familiar with,

Please enjoy:

even if it was in Cantonese with English subtitles.

Please enjoy:

They left him pretty much alone,

Please enjoy:

but as Tsang saw it,

Please enjoy:

all it would take was one dispute for everyone to hate him for the next three years they were to room together.

Please enjoy:

Now that they weren’t around,

Please enjoy:

Tsang felt slightly liberated having the dorm

Please enjoy:

and TV to himself,

Please enjoy:

yet felt something was missing.

Please enjoy:

For lack of anything to do,

Please enjoy:

the leopard cat headed to the mall to do some grocery shopping.

Please enjoy:

The university campus was devoid of any soul,

Please enjoy:

save for a few work staff and the university’s security officer.

Please enjoy:

The university’s LGBT association had some of their lights on, however,

Please enjoy:

suggesting they had an event on for those who hadn’t yet returned home.

Please enjoy:

Or perhaps couldn’t return home for reasons just like Tsang’s.

Please enjoy:

A knot made itself known in his stomach,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang fought back the tears that threatened to come.

Please enjoy:

He’d considered dropping in on a LGBT meeting

Please enjoy:

to see what they had to offer;

Please enjoy:

perhaps even see if there’s someone he could relate to.

Please enjoy:

But the fear of cultural differences

Please enjoy:

and the potential of someone he knew spotting him headed there

Please enjoy:

caused Tsang to give it a miss.

Please enjoy:

Even now, with the building more deserted than during the school terms,

Please enjoy:

he didn’t think a great idea to pay a visit like he was desperate for company or something.

Please enjoy:

The leopard cat made his way to the city center,

Please enjoy:

where the roads were busier,

Please enjoy:

and the sidewalks crowded.

Please enjoy:

He huddled into his jacket,

Please enjoy:

wondering once again if he should buy a thicker one,

Please enjoy:

or wait for his winter coat to grow out, which it never seemed to do.

Please enjoy:

Perhaps his body was too used to coming

Please enjoy:

home to a warm house or something. His home in Taipei

Please enjoy:

never lacked for heat, that’s for sure.

Please enjoy:

And because of that,

Please enjoy:

he now had to shiver

Please enjoy:

in half-assed dorm heating.

Please enjoy:

Last-minute shoppers thronged the corridors of the malls,

Please enjoy:

looking for that special something for that special someone.

Please enjoy:

Tsang wondered how many of them were there looking for something meant for their significant other,

Please enjoy:

yet not being able to tell their family about them.

Please enjoy:

He wished he had an SO to call his own,

Please enjoy:

and not have to tell his family about them, but the

Please enjoy:

truth was, he didn’t even have anyone remotely close. Mike was

Please enjoy:

straight, and he wouldn’t be paying attention to Tsang even if he wasn’t.

Please enjoy:

There were lots more choices for him in and outside of university,

Please enjoy:

and the marten didn’t have to worry about an ocean separating him from the other.

Please enjoy:

Tsang trawled the shelves of the supermarket,

Please enjoy:

figuring that if he couldn’t celebrate Dongzhi at home,

Please enjoy:

he could at least celebrate on his own.

Please enjoy:

Instead of hitting the liquor shelves in a bid to spend his night drinking,

Please enjoy:

he looked in the confectionary section for tangyuan,

Please enjoy:

glutinuous rice balls filled with sesame seeds and sugar.

Please enjoy:

They were an integral part of every Dongzhi gathering,

Please enjoy:

and symbolized unity on aspect of their roundness.

Please enjoy:

Despite the relatively international offerings on the shelves,

Please enjoy:

no tangyuan could be found.

Please enjoy:

The fact that few if any people here celebrated it probably helped make that fact,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang settled for getting some microwavable mochi instead,

Please enjoy:

his tail lashing a wild storm.

Please enjoy:

He rarely drank, but grabbed some ramen fish noodles,

Please enjoy:

fish chips and two cans of Tsingtao fermented milk beer anyway,

Please enjoy:

figuring it would be a pain to rewalk the cold streets to get anything he felt peckish for.

Please enjoy:

Tsang’s phone vibrated as he joined the snaking queue

Please enjoy:

to the fast check-out lane.

Please enjoy:

He always kept his mobile data connection on, and figured it was his parents doing their best to get him back in the fold again.

Please enjoy:

Two expletive-laden messages had made their way to his phone recently,

Please enjoy:

but the manner of phrasing had him wonder if Hai Seng was the one who sent messages

Please enjoy:

through his parents’ phone.

Please enjoy:

The older leopard cat was never creative enough to vary his sentencing and words,

Please enjoy:

and one could pretty tell it was him who wrote any message.

Please enjoy:

Figuring he had nothing better to do with his time,

Please enjoy:

and the queue wouldn’t move faster anyway,

Please enjoy:

Tsang thumbed the screen with a pad,

Please enjoy:

his unsheathed claw slipping twice against the tempered glass screen protector.

Please enjoy:

How’s your holiday so far?

Please enjoy:

Tsang stared at the Telegram message,

Please enjoy:

before registering that it had come from Uni:

Please enjoy:

Mike Zhang Economics.

Please enjoy:

Mike had asked him to join the guys for meals before,

Please enjoy:

but aside from that project on Informal Economies in 3rd World Countries,

Please enjoy:

never contacted him on the phone before.

Please enjoy:

But then, this was also the first holiday break they had at the same time, so perhaps he’d just been flipping through his contact list in his spare time.

Please enjoy:

Wondering if he should text back or save face with silence,

Please enjoy:

Tsang hitched his groceries under his arm

Please enjoy:

and settled for the former.

Please enjoy:

Boring as Hell, he typed.

Please enjoy:

Back home, words in the equivalent of “Hell” or “Death” were avoided,

Please enjoy:

as it’s believed to bring bad luck or misfortune.

Please enjoy:

Even the number 4 was avoided where possible,

Please enjoy:

as it sounded like the mandarin word for “die”.

Please enjoy:

But Tsang figured the rules didn’t apply if he wasn’t actually home.

Please enjoy:

Shopping for some snacks and beer X0.

Please enjoy:

Mike’s gotta love all these emoticons.

Please enjoy:

Some call it “booze”.

Please enjoy:

Where you at? Still at your dorm? :P

Please enjoy:

Mike’s reply came fast enough that he was likely chilling on the couch or something.

Please enjoy:

Yes. Tsang figured there wasn’t any need to lie about that.

Please enjoy:

For the next 30 minutes he was in the queue,

Please enjoy:

followed by the long walk back to what looked to be his new home for a while,

Please enjoy:

Mike didn’t reply.

Please enjoy:

Tsang had never felt more lonely. #

Please enjoy:

Tangyuan is traditionally served after being boiled,

Please enjoy:

but it seems that this wasn’t to be the case with microwavable mochi.

Please enjoy:

Tsang stuck his tongue out as he scraped it down with a plastic tongue cleaner,

Please enjoy:

wondering what possessed him to try getting a taste of home when mochi

Please enjoy:

were most definitely not from home.

Please enjoy:

The mochi had disintegrated as it was boiled,

Please enjoy:

turning the water brown with its red bean filling, and Tsang had sampled one before deciding he’d pass.

Please enjoy:

He cracked open a can of milk beer to wash the taste out of his mouth,

Please enjoy:

and headed over to the common room couch,

Please enjoy:

turning the TV on to see what’s planned.

Please enjoy:

Plenty of Christmas-themed shows were on different channels,

Please enjoy:

including Home Alone,

Please enjoy:

a movie about a young dormouse forced to defend his underground country home against two psychotic cats

Please enjoy:

when his family forgot about him.

Please enjoy:

Just as he settled on that,

Please enjoy:

the bell to the dormitory rang.

Please enjoy:

Tsang’s ears stood as he wondered

Please enjoy:

who could be visiting.

Please enjoy:

Definitely not the housing staff; they had their own access cards and didn’t need to ring.

Please enjoy:

Once they even entered when he was trying his hand at cooking pasta at the stove,

Please enjoy:

and meekly offered them some.

Please enjoy:

The thoughts of an armed gunman outside entered his mind

Please enjoy:

as he thought back to all those online news stories he’d read before coming to this country.

Please enjoy:

His parents had even insisted

Please enjoy:

he bought a gun as soon as he enrolled.

Please enjoy:

Tsang had refused,

Please enjoy:

given he’d no idea how to go about this.

Please enjoy:

Besides it would look strange that a foreigner was trying to get one for whatever reason.

Please enjoy:

And anyway, his university didn’t allow students to carry on campus.

Please enjoy:

They’d insisted he get pepper spray at least, but given that his nose couldn’t stand even the emissions of curry Tsang

Please enjoy:

never thought it a good idea to incapacitate himself at the start of a fight.

Please enjoy:

The leopard cat got up from the couch

Please enjoy:

and pressed the intercom button.

Please enjoy:

“Yo, who is it?” He added the “yo” so that the newcomer wouldn’t guess he was a foreign student on his lonesome.

Please enjoy:

There was no response,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang briefly wondered what to do.

Please enjoy:

He then remembered the intercom system on their end had been broken since the semester started,

Please enjoy:

though Maintenance had insisted they’ll fix it in due time.

Please enjoy:

A month had already passed since the last request,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang had no doubt yet another month would on account of the Christmas break.

Please enjoy:

So this was what $30,000 a year got them.

Please enjoy:

“Hang in there,” he said ineffectually to the intercom,

Please enjoy:

and walked to the main door.

Please enjoy:

Through the glass in the door,

Please enjoy:

Tsang couldn’t see anyone.

Please enjoy:

He decided that he’d open the door quickly,

Please enjoy:

stick his head out and shut it if anyone tried anything.

Please enjoy:

He opened the door and looked both ways.

Please enjoy:

Seeing no one save bushes,

Please enjoy:

he made to shut it,

Please enjoy:

only for a resistance to make itself known on the door.

Please enjoy:

“Surprise!” A flash of bright yellow and brown appeared before him,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang jerked backwards,

Please enjoy:

falling onto his tail.

Please enjoy:

He cursed in mandarin, springing upright with his claws unsheathed.

Please enjoy:

“Mike?” He asked uncertainly.

Please enjoy:

The intruder held his arms out,

Please enjoy:

a grin across his muzzle.

Please enjoy:

The yellow fur on his shoulders stood out even in the dim light of the hallway,

Please enjoy:

and in one of his paws was a six-pack of beer.

Please enjoy:

“In the fur!” The marten proudly declared. Tsang’s

Please enjoy:

mix of surprise and confusion had him slowly retract his claws

Please enjoy:

as Mike helped him up.

Please enjoy:

Tsang’s fur was all bushed out,

Please enjoy:

and he tried his best to flatten it with both paws,

Please enjoy:

licking his arm fur as Mike laughed.

Please enjoy:

“You really should ask who’s at the door with the intercom,”

Please enjoy:

Mike commented. “I could always be some nutter with a gun.”

Please enjoy:

“Intercom’s down since the semester started.

Please enjoy:

Who knows? Maybe for the last three years.”

Please enjoy:

Tsang waved the marten to follow him through the hallway.

Please enjoy:

“I doubt it. The seniors say this building got a makeover just last year.”

Please enjoy:

Mike confirmed. “A piece of shit renovation it turned out to be, then.”

Please enjoy:

Tsang opened his dorm’s door with his access card.

Please enjoy:

“I was wondering when you’d get into the lingo,”

Please enjoy:

Mike laughed as they entered the lounge.

Please enjoy:

He stared at the remains of Tsang’s meal.

Please enjoy:

“What, you were drinking alone?”

Please enjoy:

“I don’t have much of a choice.

Please enjoy:

Everyone else is gone.”

Please enjoy:

Tsang shrugged, picking up the beer can where he’d left it.

Please enjoy:

“Nice choice of movie, this.”

Please enjoy:

Mike indicated the movie on screen.

Please enjoy:

The movie had progressed to the psycho cats sharpening their claws with a hand file

Please enjoy:

right after they’d considered the dormouse’s home

Please enjoy:

perfectly ripe pickings.

Please enjoy:

“It’s what’s on. I saw the mandarin dub back when I was a kit,”

Please enjoy:

Tsang looked carefully at Mike.

Please enjoy:

“Didn’t you say that you’re returning home for Christmas?”

Please enjoy:

“Last I checked, Christmas Eve’s on the night of the 24th. Ma doesn’t

Please enjoy:

mind as long as I turn up a little before then,”

Please enjoy:

Mike chuckled. “My ticket for the Greyhound is booked for tomorrow, so I only have to wait till then.”

Please enjoy:

The marten flopped down into the couch. “Speaking of which,

Please enjoy:

I heard you saying you were flying home to be with the family.”

Please enjoy:

“Not anymore. I cancelled my flight weeks back.”

Please enjoy:

Tsang sat on the opposite couch.

Please enjoy:

“Shiiiit…your family okay?”

Please enjoy:

Mike’s muzzle creased in worry, his ears flat.

Please enjoy:

He looked so cute whenever he did that,

Please enjoy:

but Tsang wasn’t in any mood to think about such things.

Please enjoy:

“They’re fine. So’s my jerk of a brother.”

Please enjoy:

The leopard cat picked up his beer where he’d left it

Please enjoy:

and sipped, but the familiar taste now tasted bad.

Please enjoy:

The first time he’d drunk was back when he was 16,

Please enjoy:

in one of the food streets that dotted Taipei.

Please enjoy:

He and his brother Hai Seng got along better then,

Please enjoy:

and Hai Seng wanted to celebrate his becoming 18 with two cans.

Please enjoy:

Though Tsang was underage then,

Please enjoy:

his bro had bought another two cans on his behalf,

Please enjoy:

which they’d drunk till they were

Please enjoy:

absolutely wasted.

Please enjoy:

Hai Seng had checked whether Ma and Pa were asleep first before letting Tsang enter the house.

Please enjoy:

It was the first time he awoke at noontime.

Please enjoy:

Then Hai Seng had trouble finding work after high school.

Please enjoy:

He was exempted from military service because of some health condition or other,

Please enjoy:

but this also meant even blue-collar jobs weren’t eager to hire him.

Please enjoy:

Tsang, on the other paw,

Please enjoy:

did relatively well in school,

Please enjoy:

and this made Hai Seng jealous.

Please enjoy:

When he got accepted into an overseas university,

Please enjoy:

the two brothers’ relationship took a turn for the worse.

Please enjoy:

Hai Seng blamed his lack of opportunities to that of it all being given it to all the

Please enjoy:

“uni scum” and was always ready to say it was not so much his skills

Please enjoy:

as Tsang having gotten lucky in school.

Please enjoy:

Tsang was more than glad to be rid of his brother ever since he left for the States,

Please enjoy:

hoping he would return to Taipei next time to find Hai Seng had moved out.

Please enjoy:

And here Tsang was,

Please enjoy:

far from home, wondering whether or not his parents still accepted him.

Please enjoy:

Hai Seng was now an even bigger asshole, but could he really blame him for that?

Please enjoy:

The little brother he knew had bested him,

Please enjoy:

and to top it all off

Please enjoy:

had turned out gay.

Please enjoy:

Back when the brothers had gotten along,

Please enjoy:

Hai Seng had been pretty vocal about not wanting to have anything to do with homosexuals,

Please enjoy:

especially after seeing one of the local LGBT representatives hand out flyers.

Please enjoy:

If Pa wasn’t around,

Please enjoy:

Hai Seng might have started a fight with them,

Please enjoy:

outnumbered in public or not.

Please enjoy:

“Then why are you still here?

Please enjoy:

Family’s where the heart is.”

Please enjoy:

Mike popped a can from his six

Please enjoy:

-pack but didn’t make to open it.

Please enjoy:

Tsang opened his mouth to explain,

Please enjoy:

but wondered whether he should be sharing personal matters with the marten.

Please enjoy:

After all, how well did they know each other, really?

Please enjoy:

Here in the States,

Please enjoy:

everyone referred to anyone they knew, classmates included,

Please enjoy:

as “friends”, even though they might not go out to the movies together, or even be on talking terms to begin with.

Please enjoy:

To Tsang, friends are people whom you felt comfortable with,

Please enjoy:

people you could count on

Please enjoy:

not to not sell you out to others.

Please enjoy:

Sure, he’d spoken to Mike a couple of times,

Please enjoy:

both about schoolwork and personal stuff,

Please enjoy:

but that hardly counted as being friends, as much as one could call their coworkers friends.

Please enjoy:

Even now, when Mike was telling him how family is so important and all that,

Please enjoy:

wasn’t he just saying what any random stranger would say?

Please enjoy:

Everyone says family is the most important thing in public,

Please enjoy:

but the truth was, they probably had their own issues with them to begin with,

Please enjoy:

shitty siblings included.

Please enjoy:

Why were he and Mike even shooting the breeze to begin with?

Please enjoy:

Because Mike was bored, and had no one else

Please enjoy:

to talk to? “You know what, Mike? I don’t want to talk about them.

Please enjoy:

Hell, all I want to do right now is watch Home Alone,

Please enjoy:

and think happy thoughts opposite of the movie’s theme,”

Please enjoy:

Tsang turned pointedly to the screen.

Please enjoy:

“Hopefully, no psychotic canine comes along to ruin my fun.

Please enjoy:

You can stay if you like,”

Please enjoy:

the leopard cat added as an afterthought.

Please enjoy:

Mike opened his muzzle,

Please enjoy:

whether in shock or in the middle of an unspoken question.

Please enjoy:

“Come on, Hai Jun. I’m just trying to help.

Please enjoy:

No one should ever have to bear the burden of their problems alone,”

Please enjoy:

Tsang flicked his ears at Mike’s usage of his first name.

Please enjoy:

“Just tell me what it is, and we can work it out, alright?”

Please enjoy:

“It’s a personal matter, and I intend it to stay that way,”

Please enjoy:

Tsang snapped. “Look,

Please enjoy:

why are you even here?

Please enjoy:

Because there isn’t anyone else in your dorm you could talk or drink with?

Please enjoy:

You think I don’t know how things work here, just because I’m a foreigner who doesn’t know any better?”

Please enjoy:

“God above, Tsang.” The marten’s neck fur was starting to bristle,

Please enjoy:

but Tsang had enough by now.

Please enjoy:

Enough of people who wouldn’t think twice about ostracizing a homosexual coming to terms with his emotions,

Please enjoy:

enough of asshole family members

Please enjoy:

who wouldn’t accept their son

Please enjoy:

for who he was rather than who he preferred to fuck.

Please enjoy:

And last of all, Tsang had enough

Please enjoy:

of a certain entitled marten

Please enjoy:

who thought they could gatecrash

Please enjoy:

his own melancholic self-reflection just so that

Please enjoy:

they had someone to help while away their time

Please enjoy:

before catching their own ride back home.

Please enjoy:

“I’m gay, and I really don’t care what you think about that!”

Please enjoy:

snarled Tsang. “And neither do I care what my family thinks!”

Please enjoy:

He sprang up from the sofa,

Please enjoy:

and Mike fell off the side of his sofa in shock.

Please enjoy:

Tsang stalked towards the dorm door, yanking it open.

Please enjoy:

“I think you’d better leave.”

Please enjoy:

Mike stood slowly up from where he fell,

Please enjoy:

his fur all bushed up.

Please enjoy:

His expression looked uncertain

Please enjoy:

as he walked slowly towards Tsang.

Please enjoy:

“Tsang, I get that this must be all...”

Please enjoy:

“Leave. Now.” Tsang’s voice took on an edge

Please enjoy:

that had Mike stride out with his ears down.

Please enjoy:

Tsang slammed the door harder than he ever had,

Please enjoy:

his breaths coming in hard and fast.

Please enjoy:

Now that Mike wasn’t in front of him

Please enjoy:

asking difficult-to-answer questions about why he wasn’t going back to the family,

Please enjoy:

Tsang wondered if he had overreacted to the whole thing.

Please enjoy:

He didn’t have to tell Mike he was gay,

Please enjoy:

and he certainly didn’t have to tell him to get the fuck out,

Please enjoy:

although spending the afternoon in an uncomfortable silence with someone else

Please enjoy:

holds very little appeal.

Please enjoy:

But Mike hadn’t been a jerk to him in any way,

Please enjoy:

and could always have found some other way to spend his time,

Please enjoy:

such as pay-per-view television or something.

Please enjoy:

Everyone seemed to have a subscription to Netflix these days.

Please enjoy:

The marten had no lack of friends he could have called or messaged

Please enjoy:

through any combination of messaging apps, let alone some foreign leopard cat

Please enjoy:

he’d only spoken to a couple of times.

Please enjoy:

Tsang put his face in his paws,

Please enjoy:

wondering just how deep his problems had gotten.

Please enjoy:

He’d been disowned by his family, no question about that;

Please enjoy:

but he’d also ostracized one of the few people that would ever consider talking to him,

Please enjoy:

friend or not. Damn,

Please enjoy:

Tsang didn’t even have any childhood friends in Taipei he spoke to after High School came and went.

Please enjoy:

He’d been alone most of his life,

Please enjoy:

and now he would stay alone now,

Please enjoy:

doomed to spend Dongzhi and Christmas

Please enjoy:

and the rest of the holidays alone,

Please enjoy:

subsisting on ramen

Please enjoy:

and what passed off as shitty tangyuan over here.

Please enjoy:

The leopard cat spied the remaining cans in the six-pack Mike had left behind.

Please enjoy:

He really probably should return those cans to Mike,

Please enjoy:

at least as a common courtesy, but Tsang couldn’t bring himself to speak to the marten at this moment.

Please enjoy:

The last thing he needed was for a full-blown argument to make itself known

Please enjoy:

right now and make the situation far worse.

Please enjoy:

Besides, if Mike had brought the six

Please enjoy:

-pack down all the way here,

Please enjoy:

he must have been willing to share.

Please enjoy:

Tsang would need something to take his mind off his troubles anyway.

Please enjoy:

He prised a can of Budweiser away from the cardboard packaging,

Please enjoy:

opening it with a satisfying hiss.

Please enjoy:

The smell of hops and alcohol emanating was far more noticeable than that from the milk beer Tsang was drinking,

Please enjoy:

and at least didn’t remind him of his brother.

Please enjoy:

And as he poured the golden fluid down his tongue,

Please enjoy:

the sting of the mix of fermented grains enlivened him somewhat,

Please enjoy:

reminding him that for everything that happened,

Please enjoy:

he was still alive and kicking.

Please enjoy:

He drew his eyes back to the movie before him,

Please enjoy:

Kevin the dormouse’s jury-rigged traps having wounded the psychopaths.

Please enjoy:

Despite that, the two burglars remained determined to pursue the mouse

Please enjoy:

who’d caused them so much bloody grief.

Please enjoy:

This drew Tsang to an interesting observation.

Please enjoy:

Like Kevin, Tsang was alone

Please enjoy:

and vulnerable to the cold cruel world.

Please enjoy:

A world that really didn’t give a shit about their fates mainly because they had no one to care about them.

Please enjoy:

Despite the difficulties faced by the cat intruders,

Please enjoy:

and being the lowliest of scumbags to say the least,

Please enjoy:

at least they had each other to count on,

Please enjoy:

to understand their trials and tribulations,

Please enjoy:

even if it was a common enemy three-quarters their height.

Please enjoy:

The leopard cat felt that having someone to count on,

Please enjoy:

be they friend or lover

Please enjoy:

would make life so much bearable, so much less harsh.

Please enjoy:

He, Tsang Hai Jun had not a soul to count on,

Please enjoy:

but that doesn’t mean it had to be this way.

Please enjoy:

A warmth spread itself from the pit of the leopard cat’s stomach,

Please enjoy:

and he sat up straighter in the couch,

Please enjoy:

reaching for his phone.

Please enjoy:

The modern world

Please enjoy:

had its advantages,

Please enjoy:

and Tsang knew how he could make use of that.

Please enjoy:

He had a Fuzzbook account,

Please enjoy:

though its settings were always set to private so no one else could add him unless they were friends of someone else

Please enjoy:

who actually knew him.

Please enjoy:

And in the US, that was nobody.

Please enjoy:

Tsang unchecked all those restrictive settings and applied them,

Please enjoy:

right before realizing

Please enjoy:

this wouldn’t help him,

Please enjoy:

at least in the short term.

Please enjoy:

It’s not like people he knew from classes would be queuing up to add him on Fuzzbook,

Please enjoy:

especially when they already tried and failed almost a semester ago.

Please enjoy:

Tsang knew he needed something more immediate to find someone he can relate to.

Please enjoy:

He knew about dating websites and apps;

Please enjoy:

they were popular in Taiwan where one’s success in life

Please enjoy:

was also counted in whether you had a girlfriend or boyfriend.

Please enjoy:

But those required time to build up a conversation

Please enjoy:

and trust with someone before meeting them,

Please enjoy:

assuming things even got that far.

Please enjoy:

The leopard cat doubted anyone would be online or even be checking their accounts with Christmas so close.

Please enjoy:

Tsang flipped through the other apps he had installed in his phone but never used.

Please enjoy:

These included Tinder, Grindr and Knaughty.

Please enjoy:

He remembered from his search months ago

Please enjoy:

that Tinder seemed more oriented towards a straight audience,

Please enjoy:

and Knaughty seemed more targeted more towards canines,

Please enjoy:

what with emphasis on the more canid details such as tongue length and knot size.

Please enjoy:

He’d liked Grindr the most,

Please enjoy:

because of the good-looking male models he’d seen there,

Please enjoy:

but have yet to install it because he didn’t have the confidence to talk to anyone there.

Please enjoy:

Tsang figured that it’s time for him to set up an account after all,

Please enjoy:

something that was long overdue.

Please enjoy:

There were several sections

Please enjoy:

regarding his personal details that he filled up,

Please enjoy:

including “Pelt Makings” and “Sheath/Shaft Appearance”,

Please enjoy:

of which he took a selfie of his own dick he stroked to feline perfection.

Please enjoy:

Thrice Tsang had to retake the photo so that his barbs were shown in full view,

Please enjoy:

though he hoped that wouldn’t put anyone off.

Please enjoy:

But better to be rejected beforehand than right at their door, right?

Please enjoy:

He checked the location map of other nearby Grindr users,

Please enjoy:

noting that most of them were situated in the City Center.

Please enjoy:

There were at least three others on campus, however,

Please enjoy:

or at least those who didn’t turn their location finder off.

Please enjoy:

One was in the staff block,

Please enjoy:

probably a TA or lecturer.

Please enjoy:

Tsang figured it might be better to speak to someone of his own age,

Please enjoy:

so that they had some common ground to begin with.

Please enjoy:

It’d be a real joke speaking to someone who could be grading him on this semester’s finals

Please enjoy:

and have a shit grade come back to bite him in the ass.

Please enjoy:

Looking at the map once more,

Please enjoy:

Tsang saw an account by the name of

Please enjoy:

H4ppyLife

Please enjoy:

located somewhere in a dorm building.

Please enjoy:

The name looked promising.

Please enjoy:

And he was a jaguar,

Please enjoy:

so there would at least be some species familiarity.

Please enjoy:

Tsang took a minute to gather the courage to type a message out to the guy.

Please enjoy:

Yo, you hanging out in the dorm or something?

Please enjoy:

Tsang typed. Despite not having done anything like this,

Please enjoy:

Tsang didn’t think he had time to watch a Youtube video or read an article on the best conversation opening lines he could use.

Please enjoy:

Especially when the few people who would understand his situation

Please enjoy:

could already be getting ready

Please enjoy:

to leave for home.

Please enjoy:

It was several tense minutes as Tsang stared at the form,

Please enjoy:

praying to the Heavenly Deities

Please enjoy:

that H4ppy would reply with something, anything, so that

Please enjoy:

he could go through another avenue of recourse already.

Please enjoy:

Then H4ppy’s status changed from “Away” to “Online”,

Please enjoy:

followed by H4ppyLife:

Please enjoy:

Yep, nowhere else to hang around!

Please enjoy:

Family is and will always be a pain xP,

Please enjoy:

came the reply. Well,

Please enjoy:

they definitely have a common point to relate on.

Please enjoy:

In this case, a shitty family.

Please enjoy:

Tsang’s tail quit lashing in anxiety,

Please enjoy:

an involuntary purr building up in his throat.

Please enjoy:

The use of emoticons would also mean this guy would express his emotions overtly.

Please enjoy:

Tsang always had difficulties reading other people’s emotions,

Please enjoy:

even if they were of a similar species,

Please enjoy:

but this could have been from being on his lonesome much of the time. H4ppyLife:

Please enjoy:

What’s up? You don’t seem in a rush to get back home either. ×.×

Please enjoy:

A confident guy the jaguar seems to be. Lonelyheart:

Please enjoy:

It’s complicated. You don’t want to hear about it.

Please enjoy:

Tsang kicked himself right after he sent the message.

Please enjoy:

If he sounded troubled,

Please enjoy:

practically any sane person wouldn’t want to touch or whack him with a barge pole,

Please enjoy:

or whatever the idioms around here was. H4ppyLife:

Please enjoy:

Hey, lighten up already.

Please enjoy:

That’s what this app’s for :D.

Please enjoy:

Look, how about you come up and let me take care of it for you?

Please enjoy:

My dorm’s in Elden’s Gate, level 2.

Please enjoy:

Just ask for me at the intercom?

Please enjoy:

Gods of the Heavenly Palace,

Please enjoy:

was this guy a professional counsellor or what?

Please enjoy:

Not wanting H4ppy to think him ungrateful,

Please enjoy:

Tsang thumbed out a quick reply. Lonelyheart:

Please enjoy:

Thanks! See you there :) #
